2 SOUTHERN NATAL NOMADS CAPTAIN S REPORT SEPTEMBER 2018 Port Shepstone Country Club - 11 September 2018 The first 9 hole golf course in Port Shepstone was laid out in 1912, situated between the present site of the Dutch Reformed Church and Port Shepstone High School with the southern boundary being the Umbango River. The greens were sand in those days. During 1928 the president of the Tennis Club, Mr Neil McKenzie and the committee decided to engage Syd Brews to design a 9 hole golf course and the present site. Mr McKenzie with the help of the club members, local farmers and farm labourers, ploughed, harrowed and leveled the golf course and duly planted the grass for the fairways and greens. The McKenzie Trophy Competition, in memory of him, still takes place at PSCC every year. Whilst nearing the end of our tropical short-sleeve-winter Port Shepstone Country Club was in sublime condition again. The breezy conditions added to challenging golf with no silver trays and below average scores. Many thanks to the friendly Sheppy staff that served us and made it another special event. Thank you to club captain Rob Calder for being my playing partner on the day and contributing to take Vince and Booksy s cash. The breezy conditions slowed down the play of the field of 104 players and we finished slightly later than was expected but all in good spirit. Welcome to Nomads to our new inductees Hilton McAuliffe, Johan Wentzel and Bruce Eaglestone. Our serial crying towel collector Bob Hall was awarded the privilege to warm Bob s chair again this month. We are considering charging him extra for that amount of golf on one day. Well done to an emotional Neil Oberholzer on receiving his 25 year tie and Vaatjie van der Watt on eventually receiving his five year tie (hope to be seeing you more frequently in the future my friend). Welcome to visiting Nomads Dries and Wouter Beukes and Dewies van Deventer from Easterns as well as our 9 guests on the day Wikus Nel, Bob Hamill, Michail van Brakel, John Pinnoy, Keagan Davids, Mlamuli Msezane, Lincoln Dyer, Rob Calder and Alan Harris, we trust you enjoyed the day with us and hope to see you again next month. Job well done again to our funny fines master Andrew Pastellides. Thanks to Tony, and Ryan, and everybody else for assisting to set up the altar and many prizes and thanks to our controller Peter Stoppel and our ladies Allison Keys, Amy-Lee D Arcy, Linda Hall and Rose Fleming for all their efforts to ensure a smooth prizegiving. It went like clockwork as usual commencing 17h30 was concluded in one hour. Well done to all for staying and enjoying it with us. Thank you so much Bones Coertzen for taking the photos and Ryan Keys for doing the slide show again. Myself, Ryan Ringo and Kevin Pistorius will be off to represent our club as part of the South African team at the Botswana Nationals taking place on the 14th and 15th of September. Natal is hosting the 2018 Present and Past Captain s Challenge at Umkomaas Golf Club on the 20th of September. We wish our team under the leadership of oom Louw all of the best on their quest for glory. All were reminded of our annual Andrew Mentis Fundraising Golf Day that is taking place at Southbroom Golf Club on Sunday the 23rd of September 2018, all the best to our Vice- Captain and his organizing team on their final preparations for this awesome event. Our team of seven to go to the Swazi Nationals will be announced shortly, from the vastly oversubscribed list of applicants. We have applied to our national JVC for more slots in the event and hope to get an extra few. The entry forms for the 2019 Firethorn Nationals that will be held between the 9th and the 15th of March at Randpark Golf Club in Gauteng have been issued to all members and it promises to be a cracker. Simon Lee has decided to step down at the end of August 2018 as our national secretary after several years on the National Executive Committee. Thank you so much Simon for always representing our club with honour and integrity, as well as your invaluable dedication and contribution to Nomads and your friendly guidance when called upon my friend. See you all at the beautiful Southbroom Golf Club next month where uncle Dougie Milne will be playing his 650th nomads monthly game (a truly remarkable feat), an occasion not to be missed by all please! Thanks each and every one of you for your valued contributions and friendly assistance to further our great club. Yours truly, Roelof Meyer

10 GOLFORAMA Wild Coast Sun Challenge. We arrived at the Wild Coast Sun with our spirits high only to be met with heavy rain and one half of the course with the greens dug up and the other half of the course under water. Be that as it may we all arrived at the course at to the news that the start of play has been delayed until 1-00pm and to be played over the front nine only with a shotgun start. We were all very apprehensive having to use 2 hand held scoring devices and score sheets anyway the tournament started and apart from one or two errors plus one extra night in the hotel we managed to complete the tournament. I would like thank all the volunteers for their help and support and don t like to single out anybody in particular but special thanks to Jimmy Spear for his continued support and a very special thanks to Norman ( not just a pretty face ) Sieberhagen for his wisdom and wit. Vodacom Origins of Golf Selborne Golf Estate. Once again all the volunteers and I arrived nice and early and we were not disappointed this time around, the tournament started on time, the weather was great and the condition of the golf course was fabulous. As per usual the guys and girl did a fantastic job and again the Tournament Director thanked the Nomads for their hard work and dedication. Again I try not to single out any one Nomad but it would be wrong of me not to thank Ryan Ringo for his enthusiasm and willingness to do any task given to him, also for his very generous donations. To Ryan Keys a big thank you for filling in at the last minute on the Saturday. Once again to all the guys and girl for your time and effort, without you people us as Nomads would not be able to complete our obligations to the Sunshine Tour and lose the monies that are paid to our organization. Nedbank Golf Challenge. Southern Natal Nomads were awarded 2 places at the above mentioned tournament and I have decided to invite Bones to be my partner to go to Sun City, he has been a tower of strength and deserves his chance to go. Yours in Nomads Bob Hall Southern Natal Nomads.

15 Shaggy Greetings Nomads, September game done and dusted! While some of us were expecting serious wind at Sheppie it was nothing that we could not manage being coastal golfers, that was until the field turned and the good, bad and ugly of golf came to the fore. Uglier than good but that s life. Just to enlighten you on how difficult it was, our playing average for the day was a mere 27 points. There were only 4 two clubs. 8 players made more than 32 points and 47 made less than 28 points. Now this could be down to the new handicap / slope system being implemented from September, or we just played crap. For those of you who look for an alternative excuse to the garbage you played you may use the new system for this month only. Bob won the crying towel AGAIN!, at this rate he will have no opposition for the best worst golfer of the year. Here is my take on the new handicap system. We all have our handicap adjusted to a generic formula at our respective clubs, and I like to think of it as a system handicap. This is a guide line of where we will start at whatever course we are going to play. Each course has its own rating and subsequently you will play off the handicap at that particular course taking into account the difficulty, slope rating and tee markers chosen. This is your course handicap. You may find that at some courses you may gain or lose a shot or two, take a deep breath, have a beer and toast your good fortune. For our Nomads game the following will apply:- your club handicap will be checked and confirmed. This will be the starting point to determine your handicap. The host club slope rating and tee will give the handicap for the day (old club handicap). Except for the three old farts who have been allowed to play off the forward tee s everyone will play off the determined tee for the day. NO EXCEPTIONS! The statutory cut will be applied as per our divisions and that will determine your nomads handicap and division you will play for the game. This of course is a grey area and up until such time that we get clarity from NATEX we will follow this simple formula. So if you feel that you have been penalized rather radically both from a handicap cut to a move up to a higher division, put on you big boy pants take a deep breath and come have a beer. Till next time keep it on the fairway. Shaggy
