By Micki Valant, Editor It was determined at the last Board Meeting that there is value in a seasonal Newsletter. We know you are inundated with reminders and last chance opportunities, but we believe having something that arrives in you inbox on a regular basis may aid in your planning and give you important information. By way of introduction, my name is Micki Valant, and I have agreed to edit NEWSLINX. I was elected to the Board last fall. The plan is to publish, around the first of the month, news and events from March to October. You will continue to receive eblasts, as needed, with important deadlines and other information. 2 mwgolf.org Issue Golf Genius by Cynthia Pinkard MWGA Competitions now Powered by USGA/Golf Genius Improved Support, More Reports, Live Scoring, Immediate Competition Results The MWGA competition and event registration, results, reports and forms have taken on a new look. We are using tournament and event management software sponsored and supported by the USGA and Golf Genius. Some of the changes are obvious, but because they are so different from our previous process, may be a little confusing and will take some time before they are fully implemented. We are looking forward to the additional support and extra features and options that come with Golf Genius. Some of the changes and features are: Stripe js the preferred online payment vendor for USGA/Golf Genius TM and will therefore be replacing PayPal for online payments of our competitions and events All open events are listed with the number of players registered on a single page with other details and options listed within the linked pages, including results Live scoring and access to standings and results will be immediately available on your mobile devices at all of our competitions. Simply download the Golf Genius app to your mobile device, then using the GGID (a code that will be given to you or use your personal login) access scoring, results, and other information on our events. TV leaderboards with results will be available in the club houses of all of our events. Register for all of our events by going to under the Events menu or under Upcoming Events or 2018 Registration. The MWGA Match Play League (MPL) welcomes all MWGA members, (and their guests), to sign up to play on its Organized Play Dates. Non-league members are encouraged to join us and play on these dates. Maybe you re just looking to play golf on a free Saturday or Sunday, OR maybe you re curious about how match play works and want to experience a round or two; we d love to have you play with our group. We typically choose a restaurant close by for drinks and dinner afterwards. So, come join in the fun! 4 mwgolf.org Issue Play Smart Know the Rules by Sara Wold, MWGA Rules Chairman The 2018 MWGA Rules Committee consists of Kris Bennett, Deb Horning, Martha Mac Intosh, Sue Madej, Shirley Mc Clain, Cynthia Pinkard, Nancy Serra, Lu Stockton, and Karen Stock. These ladies have taken multiple Rules Seminars, including USGA, GAM, and MWGA Rules Schools. They will be at our Tournaments this year to help you with rules situations and questions. Thank you, ladies, for volunteering your time and expertise in this essential function. If anyone else is interested in joining the committee, please contact me. USGA Rules Update The R&A and USGA have wisely resolved the Lexi Thompson rules debacle of the past. At major tournaments there will be one or more officials to monitor the video broadcast to help identify and resolve Rules issues as they arise and discontinue any steps to facilitate or consider viewer call-ins, including use of individual smart phones or cameras. They eliminated the additional 2 stroke penalty for failing to include a penalty on the score card when the player was unaware of the penalty. Players will continue to be penalized for all breaches of the Rules during a competition, including any that come to light after the score card is returned. An additional penalty for the score card error is not required. This is a local rule that has taken effect Jan. 1, MWGA Rules Update The MWGA adopted the local rule last year for Accidental Movement of a Ball on a Putting Green. Rules 18-2, 18-3, and 20-1 were modified as follows: When a player s ball lies on the putting green, there is no penalty if the ball or ball marker is accidentally moved by the player, his partner, his opponent, or any of their caddies or equipment. The moved ball or ball marker must be replaced as provided in Rules 18-2, 18-3, and This local rule applies only when the player s ball or ball marker lies on the putting green and any movement is accidental. If it is determined that a player s ball on the putting green moved as a result of wind, water, or some other natural cause such as the effects of gravity, the ball must be played as it lies from its new location. A ball marker moved in such circumstances is replaced. Last year the MWGA made the following changes to the MWGA Rules and Conditions Policy: Distance Measuring Devices A player may obtain distance information by use of a distance-measuring device. If, during a stipulated round, a player uses a distance measuring device to gauge or measure other conditions that might affect his play (e.g., elevation changes, wind speed, etc.), the player is in breach of Rule The penalty is two strokes in stroke play or loss of hole in match play for the first offense and disqualification for a subsequent breach. See Appendix IV and Rule Cell Phones If one elects to carry a cell phone during any MWGA competition, as a measuring device or otherwise, phones (1) must be on inaudible alert; (2) used away from fellow players to avoid any interference with play; (3) usage must not delay play; nor (4) be used to access information on advice-related matters that were not published prior to the start of the round. The first offense is a two-stroke penalty in stroke play or loss of hole in match play and a subsequent offense is disqualification. See Decision 14-3/16. Flower Beds Mandatory relief must be taken for a ball in any flower bed that is not in a water hazard. Rule Automotive Transportation Players must use automotive carts. Spectators are not permitted to ride. Caddies are not permitted in any competition.

5 mwgolf.org Issue Look for More Information Go to the 2019 Solheim Cup MWGA member Angie Cook, a world-experienced golfer, will lead a MWGA trip to the 2019 Solheim Cup to Gleneagles Scotland, Sept. 8-16, More details will be out shortly. Women s Golf Day at Carl s Mark your calendar for Women s Golf Day on Tuesday June 5 th. The MWGA is partnering with Carl s Golfland in Bloomfield to celebrate Women s Golf Day. It is an International event in 60 + countries around the world. Last year a hundred ladies attended and we expect it to be a bigger event this year. Carl s did a wonderful job providing plentiful food, drink, and desserts during the evening. The pro instructors from Carl s were at learning stations for putting, chipping, and full shots. There were other games and lots of prizes. They really went all out to provide a fun experience for our golfers. Plan to attend with friends. GAM League Championship New this year on GAM s schedule is the League Championship. If your league is at a GAM Member Course and uses the GAM software, it is eligible to play in the GAM League Championship. Details will be available later in the season. GAM Scramble Championship The GAM Scramble format has evolved over the years and changes have made it more golfer friendly. It still has the step aside format but you no longer have to bring a scorer with the team or include a pro if your team qualifies for the Championship, which will be at The Pohlcat and Bucks Run this year. There is a gross and net division and there are different tees for senior men and senior women. Check it out and get a team together to play at one of the qualifying sites. LPGA Women s Network The LPGA is reaching out to women amateur golfers of all skill levels with their new program, Women s Network. It is free! It includes bi-monthly newsletters with news, articles, interviews, instruction, and discounts from their sponsors. Flyers should be available and Annual Meeting on May 12.

6 mwgolf.org Issue Handicap News By Suzanne Madej, MWGA Handicap Director Welcome to another wonderful Michigan golf season. The posting period this year is from April 1 st until October 31 st. All rounds played under the Rules of Golf are to be posted, including match play rounds. There is one change you will notice now that we are using GHIN as our handicap provider: you will no longer be able to correct any mistakes that you might make while posting a score. This includes score, date, home/away and tournament/non-tournament. All is not lost, however, as you can contact me, your Handicap Director, and I will be happy to make the changes for you. Please do not bother the GAM offices with change requests as this is not their responsibility. Changes will not show up until the next posting period. Thanks for your cooperation in this matter.
