1 R Country Golfer Golfer SIGNATURE COURSE VOL 19 ISSUE 7 July, Dear Member, As promised, we kept our members engaged throughout muggy July, on and off the course. At the Pavilion we tickled their palates with mouth-watering East and West Bengal cuisine, specially curated by Pritha Sen, a food historian and an authority over Bengali Cuisine. Not to be outdone, the Sports Complex hosted a Mini Carnival for our young guns. It goes without saying, their parents enjoyed it too! A Yoga Workshop by Kriti Kala, a yoga expert from Rishikesh, was organized for our fitness aficionados. There was excitement on the course with the DLF Men s Team Championship commencing mid month and the 47th Lufthansa Junior Golf Tour Tournament was a super hit. Despite the high temperatures and prolonged dry spell, the course played superbly through summer months and will only get better as the weather keeps improving. Our golfers are really appreciative of the visible efforts and hands on approach by Shaun and his team in enhancing their pleasure of playing here. With summer vacations now but a sweet memory, members have returned to their favourite activities at the Club. The first half of 2017 has just whizzed past and now we are going headlong into another busy season. Coming up in August, we have the next edition of the Lufthansa Junior Golf Tour Tournament on 14th, our traditional 15th August DLF Independence Cup and a Swimming Gala at the Sports Complex plus a variety of Food Promotions at the Pavilion. See you at the Club! Happy Golfing! Vishal Bharti Asst. Vice President Accolades Yet Again! 4 Flavours from Undivided Bengal Rabindranath Tagore once stated that the real fulfilment of desire is satiated through the tongue. Such deep is a Bengali's love for food. Pritha Sen a researcher, writer and a journalist for over two decades, also a food historian and an authority over Bengali Cuisine decided to showcase some of her work on undivided Bengali cuisines at the Pavilion on the 19th and 20th of July. The Pavilion wore a new look for those two evenings, the perfect ambience was created with simple decor and Rabrindra Sangeet playing in the background. The members appreciated the move and thoroughly enjoyed the scrumptious Bengali dishes. We also succeeded in breaking the stereotype that Bengali food is not only about fish and non-vegetarian food. Cultural motifs of Bengal - theme of the evening Yoga Workshop Relishing each morsel! When you find peace within yourself you can find peace with others and Yoga helps you find that peace within you. On the 19th, along with Rishikesh based yoga expert Kriti Kala, we planned a Yoga, session at the Reception Plaza. The 1 hour and 30 minutes of therapeutic asanas starting with the Vajrasana and continued with Markatasna, Tadasana, Brahmari, Udgeeth and Pranav created the much desired tranquil mood. Our members - Meera Mehra, Renu Sood, Yuko Sanada, Sadhna Kumar, Namita Tripathi along with others performed the asanas with much gusto. Kriti Kala shared important tips and also patiently answered individual queries of the members. Yoga - the mantra of wellness & fitness Therapeutic Asanas The perfect adieu to the summer holidays - Mini Carnival We welcomed back our members and their families with a Mini Carnival at the Poolside Lawn. The Rides, the Art & Craft Workshop, Rain Dance and the Magician kept all the age groups engaged and happy. Children danced with abandon in the rain to the top numbers played by the DJ. Hunger pangs were satiated with finger licking snacks on offer. The weather tried to play the damper, but the high energy and the enthusiasm of the little participants more than made up for it. The kids went back home laden with gift hampers sponsored by Nestle. Potter's wheel - an all time favourite Spinning a magical web

5 Feathered friends on your course by Raghav Dhall Oriental Magpie Robin The Oriental Magpie Robin male has glossy blue-black upper parts, head, throat and upper breast. It has a black long tail with white outer feathers and white underparts. Its wings are black with two bold, long, white wing bars. It is easily recognised by the stark contrast of the black and white colours on its body. The Oriental Magpie Robin inhabits open woodland and cultivated areas, preferring open areas such as mangroves and gardens as well, often close to human habitations. It is not usually found in the deep forest. Magpie feeds mainly on insects and on flower nectar. It also consumes earthworms, snails, small lizards and some plant matter. The Magpie Robin builds its nest almost anywhere from thick shrubs, Raghav Dhall in the fork of branches of small trees, hollow trees and even near human habitation. It is a widespread resident of India and at the Club you can spot it hopping on the ground or perching on the branches of trees. Did You Know? Oriental Magpie Robin The Oriental Magpie Robin has a delightful, varied song and is said to be able to imitate the calls of other birds. With this informative piece, our in-house Birder Raghav Dhall migrates to foreign shores to pursue his graduation at the University of California, Los Angeles to do Computer Engineering. We wish him all success and hope he keeps up his hobby of tabulating our feathered friends! Maybe he will be our first Ornithologist. From our Superintendent s Quill Shaun Satterly Practice Habits With excellent practice facilities available at DLF Golf & Country Club Academy, it is no wonder that players love to spend a lot of time practicing and fine tuning their swings. But for the Course Superintendent and the Golf Operations team this poses a major challenge to successfully manage the wear and tear on the playing surfaces. They employ several rotation methods and weekly maintenance practices to promote fast recovery on the practice Tee. Practicing in one specific area, as in the picture on the right, is the worst method of practice as it creates large worn-out areas that take longer time to recover. There are several practice habits that golfers can inculcate to assist the turf to recover fast and in turn successfully rotate the use of the tees. Such as : x Worst Method of Practice Scattering Method Linear Strip Method Scattering the divots whilst practicing (above left), allows the turf to recover faster but a lot of turf gets removed during this practice as a full divot is usually taken out on every shot. Practicing in a linear pattern (as shown above right), whilst leaving approx 4 inches between each strip is the most effective method as it allows for more shots to be played in one area. Golfers are requested to use the above strip method by placing the ball at the back edge of the previous divot as it removes only a small amount of turf. Do not forget to leave the 4 strip between each line of divots. This will hasten recovery and ensure high quality turf on the driving range tee.

6 Academy News Karan's Tips Set up for the low chip and run This Month's Achievers Flawless Vani Kapoor & Gaurika Bishnoi DLF GOLF ACADEMY Vani Kapoor Gaurika Bishnoi Vani Kapoor wins third title of the year on the Hero Women s Pro Golf Tour. She clinched her third win in four starts on the Hero Women s Professional Golf Tour with a bogey free three-under 68 in the final round of the eighth leg of the Tour at Clover Greens, Bangalore. Gaurika Bishnoi kept her lead at the top of the Hero Order of Merit and grabbed second position. Gaurika continues to be the most consistent performer of the season with seven finishes in the top-4 in eight starts, which include one win, three second places and two third places. Pic 1: Shows the set up, with the ball positioned back in the stance and hands forward. The weight also favours the front foot. This will ensure that we make contact with the ball on the descent and keep the ball flight low. Hitaashee Bakshi Hitaashee Bakshi won the Golf Foundation Invitational Tournament at AEPTA, New Delhi. She also grabbed second position in the Albatross Tournament held at Jaypee Greens from 19th to 21st. Pic 2: Shows that the flag is placed much into the green, hence this shot does not require you to fly the ball high all the way to the hole. I have chosen a PW for this shot, and chosen a spot just on to the green to land the ball. From here, a low flighted shot will feed to the hole, looking like you've rolled a putt. This is a consistent way of playing from around the green. Keep the ball low for more control, only give it the height if needed. Hope it helps! Guru with his proteges Tvesa Malik with her first cheque Tvesa won her first tournament as a professional golfer. She won by a stroke from a hard charging runner-up Gaurika Bishnoi who finished runner-up at the 7th leg of the Hero Women s Pro Golf Tour held at the Eagleton Golf Resort, Bangalore.

P. Dhaniram 17 Pt Anitya Chand Spin Loft This month, let s have a look at the next parameter as measured by the launch monitor TrackMan Spin Loft. Spin Loft is simply the difference in angle between the dynamic loft and the angle of attack at impact. To understand Spin Loft, it is important to go over angle of attack and dynamic loft once. Angle of attack is the angle the club head is traveling (either upwards, downwards or level to the ground) when it strikes the golf ball. If we hit a 7-iron from the fairway, our club should strike the ball first and then take a divot ahead of the ball making it a downward or negative angle of attack. The reverse holds true for hitting a driver with the ball on the tee here we want the club to hit the ball while it is traveling upwards or a positive attack angle. The other component of Spin Loft is dynamic loft which is simply the loft of the club at impact. This may be different than the static loft or the loft of the club at address position. If we look at the tour average for a 7-iron, the static of the club is approximately 34 degrees (as stated by the manufacturer) and the dynamic loft is 23 degrees. This means that tour professionals de-loft the club as they are hitting it on the way down. Coming back to Spin Loft, it is simply the mathematical difference between the dynamic loft and the angle of attack. Assuming that a tour professional has a dynamic loft of 23 degrees and hits the ball with a 5 degrees downward angle of attack, the Spin Loft is 23 (-5) = 28 degrees. The amount of Spin Loft determines the amount of spin a golf ball will have, with a greater Spin Loft giving a greater spin to the golf ball. This is a very valuable concept to understand as it tells us a few things: If we don t change the Spin Loft angle, we don t change the spin (everything else being equal). In other words, if we were to simply hit down on the ball, we would not increase the amount of spin imparted, we would only lower the ball flight with the same amount of spin. This should clear the commonly heard myth Hit more downwards to create more spin. To increase spin we must increase the Spin Loft angle. To decrease spin, we must decrease the Spin Loft angle. A change in the Spin Loft can be created by changing either one of the two components while the other component stays the same. It can also be achieved if there is an unequal change in the two components. We also use the word compression a lot in our golf talk and relate it with solid ball striking. If players strike a shot well they will often describe themselves as having compressed it. But what does this really mean? Well the concept of Spin Loft explains this for us. If we have more spin loft we will have higher spin and less transfer of energy due to the oblique contact between club and ball. On a given shot, if we lower the Spin Loft and maintain a centered strike, the energy transfer is greater and there is less spin. So, simply put compression is Spin Loft!
