Battle of the Sexes Ladies Triumph; Men Distraught Our Lady Members dominated their male counterparts once again this year in the annual Battle of the Sexes to 12.5 points indicates the men will need to find another gear if they are to succeed next year. The Vegas sportsbook had the ladies as clear favourites heading into the tournament and they didn't fail to disappoint. The Pro's will be offering a 40 week lesson package to get the guys in shape for next years battle.

Tee Time Etiquette Demand is High I usually post this article in either July, August or September and this year is no exception. With demand for golf highest at this time of year, it is imperative that golfers give the Pro Shop the maximum amount of notice if their group is not going to show, or if they are going to be fewer that they have booked for. There have been quite a few instances lately where this hasn't happened. It is very damaging to revenue, and also limits the amount we can spread the message about our wonderful golf course. 7 The USPGA has sneaked up on us this year. Our pool is ready to go. Don't waste your twoonie on the 6/49 Lottery this week - winning would only leave you with a giant headache. Come in and pick your choice of PGA stars. Probably a good idea to leave Dustin Johnson alone for a little while. Patrick from our Maintenance Crew won the US Open pool. Amongst his picks were players that finished 1st, Tied 2nd, Tied 2nd and 4th. Not bad. Patrick will be holding Pool-Picking Clinics every 30 minutes by the Pro Shop Counter between now and Wednesday midnight. Cost is negligible when compared with the riches you can accumulate. July Golfing Wizards Aces I was becoming worried that I had no golfing wizards this month, then BAMMM - four aces in eight days.

8 Geoff Borritt The first came courtesy of Geoff Borritt. It was his fifth, and happened on the fifth. I am wagering his sixth won't happen on the sixth, at our course at least. Geoff had throttled down on a little mashie niblick. Bob Garness The second was Bob Garness registering his first ever hole in one. Bob's also came at the gully hole.

9 Bob had his hands on the mashie niblick, but a last minute switch to his jigger proved quite fortuitous. Warren Robertson Warren Robertson completed the great triumvirate, holing out at - yes you guessed it - the 5th hole. Warren used his rutting iron to perfection, throwing just enough side tilt on his ball for it to disappear.

10 Art Carpenter Art Carpenter was visiting us from the Great White North of Comox when he decided the gully hole was far easier than us, who know better, feel. Art swung back high and wide with his baffie and slam dunked it in the hole! Great work wizards! Funny True Story - When I worked in England, the local newspaper always featured golfers Hole in Ones. I remember reading a long list of aces each week, week after week, for the same hole at one particular club. It seemed odd because it was a difficult hole, nearly 200 yards in length and relatively blind - you could just see the tip of the flagstick. When I spoke with the clubs pro, he laughed. He told me that local kids hid in bushes near the green. As soon as the golfer hit, they'd run out, unseen by the golfer, and drop it in the hole if they didn't steal it! He figured that around 5% of the aces were real. He also mentioned that happy golfers ran up big bar tabs and that made for a happy clubhouse. Upcoming Events Participate!

Men's Night, sponsored by Les Pockett of Royal LePage and John D'Aigle of Home-Chek Inspection happens on August 13th - you can reserve your team anytime after 7am on August 6th. Family Night falls on August 6th. If you have little people, bring them down and let them go whackabout. There is no charge, just lots of fun. (Pizza is 20% off). For Members it is Club Championship month. Sign up for your respective club's Championship, get over the nerves thing (it's just the same as your usual competition day) and have fun being competitive with your friends. Kids Golf Growing the Game We're trying to grow the game from grassroots up. We want to see more and more kids on the golf course in the next few years.

12 Some initiatives we pursue include: 1 offering low cost group instruction to kids every Sunday morning, divided by age and skill level, with video analysis and on course playing lessons for the older kids once per month; 2 offering FREE instruction in local elementary and middle schools through the winter months;

13 3 attending QB's family day and Parksvilles beach day with our SNAG equipment - teaching kids for FREE; 4 attending RDN camps through the summer with our SNAG equipment and introducing the game to those youngsters at a nominal price; 5 Offering FREE green fees to youngsters after 5pm when accompanied by a paying adult;

14 6 arranging a Family Night once per month where families visit the course, hit balls at the range, play a mini golf course on the putting green, use SNAG equipment or play a few holes for NO COST; 7 Offering Junior Memberships for $175 that includes unlimited golf and, this year, 25 FREE group golf lessons!

15 8 Stocking an extensive line of US Kids equipment, the market leader in differently sized kids clubs. The clubs feature thin lightweight graphite shafts and light heads allowing the youngster to hold the club correctly from an early age and swing the club as opposed to being swung by a (heavy) club. If you'd like to gift your child or grandchild a game for a lifetime, sign him or her up for lessons in the Pro Shop or give them a set of clubs that fits them perfectly - all we need is their size in inches. 16 Tip of the Month Sand Saves Don't freak out next time your ball lands in sand! Look forward to it... One of the swing thoughts I share with my students is to swing the right forearm low across their belly past impact, while holding the club face open (pointing up at the sky). (Notice how low my arms are in their finish position.)

17 If they do that, and their hips rotate through to face the target, they stand a good chance of hitting good shots. It feels like an almighty slice, so don't do this from grass!
