2 G olfing helps to build communities through social inclusion and a sense of connection. It helps to bind families through shared experiences and shared achievements. Our Club provides great opportunities to get involved in your community. Volunteering is an activity that people choose to do for the good of their club and their community. As a Club, we are always looking to recruit new volunteers to help out. It is a great opportunity to make new connections, new friends and learn about your community and to get involved. Benefits of Volunteering include: Improved health and wellbeing. Provides an opportunity to meet new people and make new friends and increase your social networks. Learn new skills. Have fun. Builds a network of friends and provides a sense of belonging. Provides the opportunity to do something you enjoy. Increases self confidence and self esteem. Enriches quality of life. There are also individual benefits to be derived from doing volunteer work that reach far beyond the volunteer act itself and may linger long after the volunteer role is relinquished. Getting Involved Around the Club There are many routine tasks that need to be undertaken around our club that assist the club keeping ongoing costs at a manageable level. These include: Helping with course related tasks e.g. top dressing, cleaning up the rough, maintenance of the storm shelters, course buildings maintenance, weed control etc. Clubhouse maintenance and improvements e.g. painting, cleaning etc Gardens - maintenance and improvement Minor plumbing, carpentry and electrical repairs Maintenance of the car park surface Assisting with running and the social days (especially BBQ cooking and serving on a Sunday) Whilst the club employs staff and engages contractors for the majority of works, members helping out around the club helps the club out financially as well as keeping it maintained. And who doesn t want to play on a great course? Please consider how you might be able to help the club and give your details and how you can help to the Club s Office or ProShop staff. M any thanks to Gavin Lindsay for garden improvements along the Club s driveway and around the entrance sign. It s amazing what a couple of loads of mulch will do. Also many thanks to the band of volunteers who do cooking and the serving at the can bar week in and week out. Thanks also to the members who have helped around the course recently on working bees repairing the irrigation lines and to the many members of the club s sub-committees whose work helps keep the club being a great club. contact the club to register your details and ask what needs doing.. 2

3 Membership We ve seen an increase in our Membership. Over the past three months, 57 new members have joined. We welcome all returning members back and a warm welcome is extended to new members and their families to our club. As a returning club member, if you see someone new in the club, please reach out and introduce yourself to them. Fairways Bistro Update The Club Bistro organized two recent successful events celebrating Australia Day and Chinese New Year. Thanks Deb. Debbie has some wonderful menu items on offer, so please come in and enjoy some great food and support the club. Check the Club s Facebook page and watch the notice boards around the clubhouse for up and coming events. Clubhouse Maintenance and Repairs The Club is looking for a painter as we have a few doors that need painting and some touch up work around the Club so if you are a painter or you know a painter please get in contact with David to have a chat. We are currently collating a list of tasks that need doing. We ll then prioritize them for actioning over the coming year. We ll be looking for volunteers to assist with some of these tasks when we are ready to undertake them. (See Chairman Frank s Call for Volunteers). If You See It - Report It If you ve noticed something around the Club that needs attention, please report it to the Office or Pro Shop and we ll add them to the list. Club Bar Update Great to see everyone survived the holiday period. The Meat Muster on Fridays has now resumed and we are looking forward to having all our Friday regulars joined by more of our members and visitors for the 9 holes. Don t forget to stay after your game for the raffles and enjoy some great food from the. All our competition days are enjoying good numbers, and the staff appreciate your patience during the busy periods at the Bar. from Rob at the Bar Members have been enjoying the C.C. & Dry that is now on tap. We offered it at an introductory promotion price of $6.00 for Members. The CPI increase from 1 st Feb and the end of the promotion means we have had to increase the price to $6.50 still very enjoyable at that price. The Iron Jack promotion that was run during the Christmas break was very successful with lots of prizes given away. Pro Shop Serving of Alcohol You can now purchase alcohol from the Pro Shop seven days a week from 8am. This provides two advantages - the first is improving the service for our members and guests when the bar isn t open as well as allowing us to rationalise bar hours upstairs. The main bar will now open a little later - Monday 12noon, Tuesday 11am and Thursday 12noon. If the demand is there on those days, we can reinstate earlier bar opening times. For any functions or special golf days, the upstairs bar will open as required. The liquor licence is very specific for the Pro Shop. The serving of alcohol is only allowed for those playing golf. Additionally, the only alcohol allowed to be consumed on course must be purchased from the club. Members and guests must conform to our liquor licence requirements. Club Staffing After the passing of our Office Manager Carol Thomas, Debbie McDonnell stepped in and has helped keep the Club s operations on track by providing many hours of unpaid administrative support to the Club. She has been keeping the books up to date, ensuring invoices were paid on time and providing enormous office support. We would like to personally thank her for all her efforts and hard work she did for the Club over this tough time. A huge club thanks! We welcome Carol Andrew to the office team as a new staff member to take on the bookwork. Carol comes to us with a wealth of knowledge and experience in these areas. When you pass by the Office, please stop and say hello and make her feel welcome. till next time - Happy Golfing! Greg Russ - House Director & David - Secretary Manager Take Your Medicine... It is amusing to see that when a player has missed the fairway that is 30m wide from the tee and puts their ball in the trees, they believe themselves able to thread their golf ball through a gap 6 inches wide to find their way back well up the fairway! This will not work more than once in a thousand attempts and yet the rate of attempting this miraculous recovery is certainly greater than that figure. We have all made that mistake and you probably have to make these mistakes to learn from them, but if you take the advice from those who have spent many years watching golfers in their natural habitat of the rough - take your medicine and just get back on the short grass and leave the miraculous recovery shots to the Bubba Watson s of this world! 3

4 5 th T he 2019 Match Committee has already produced two Newsletters - one in December last year and one in January this year. Both are available from the Club s website. They have been published to keep all club members informed of the new rule changes, local club rules and other changes as they effect club competitions. It has also produced: Club Fixture Book Events Calendar as well as a Conditions of Play document for all club competitions in All are available on the Club s website. As playing members, it is your responsibility to stayed informed of the changes to rules, local rules and conditions as they effect competition play. Not only are the Newsletters and booklets a valuable source of information, members should also consult the Local Rules Notice Board outside the Proshop before teeing off to ensure they are up to date. M embers please be aware that the sandy areas (former bunkers) on the 6 th and 17 th are now: WASTE AREAS FORMER BUNKERS ON THE 6 th fairway and 17 th fairways on the first corners only. Please consider the players after you, should you have to play from the waste areas. Give the area a general smooth over after your shot. The course is looking the best it has for some time. This has been due to the combination of the new watering system, some excellent rainfall, our greens staff and the efforts of a magnificent group of volunteers under the leadership of Barry Murrihy and Brian Houchin. Thanks to you all, on behalf of the members. For the rest of us, please continue to be aware of the condition of your golf course and do what you can to leave it in as good as, or better condition for the members that play after you. A Short Course has been measured up. The Ladies will trial it on the 28 th Feb. Competitions on public holidays are in place and will be a play anytime on the day set up, there will not be blocked out time slots for the competition. Please book your groups in as per normal or contact the pro shop. A Caboolture Men s Open Day will go ahead on Sunday the 4 th August, Comp fees will be $15 for members and visitors. 5 Irrigation Works All in-ground works were completed prior to Christmas, a couple of months ahead of schedule. The contractor is currently carrying out pre-commissioning works which should be completed in the next week or so. I would like to thank members for their patience during these works, the benefits are already visible during the current dry spell. However, it would be nice to receive a decent amount of rain so all the course can improve. A huge thank you to our Course Superintendent Colin Caulfield, for the extra hours he put in and the Greens Staff who still managed to get things done during the works. I am sure they will appreciate a fully functioning Irrigation System which allows them a lot more control and not in need of constant repairs. We as members along with the club will reap the benefits for years to come from the new system. With the irrigation now finished and the current very hot weather that we have had, you can see what a difference the irrigation has made already. Members, please ensure carts are kept at least 10m from the greens. Working Bees To all those members who have attended a number of working bees over the past few months Thank You. Even with the warm weather we have had good numbers to top dress irrigation trenches. Keep an eye on the home page of the Club Website for details of the next working bee and enjoy a sausage and drink afterwards. Wastelands Fairway bunkers on the 6 th & 17 th holes are now wastelands. As no rakes will be available it will be up to users to smooth out any foot prints etc. Future works to the wastelands on the 17 th includes some low scale drainage and amalgamating the two RHS wastelands into one. Course Care Please ensure you repair any pitch marks you may come across on the greens, fill your divots, rake bunkers and enjoy your golf. Good Golfing Paul Book - Greens Director Junior Clinics - $4.00 per person Tuesday Afternoons : 3.30pm-4.30pm 2018 Titleist ProV1 and Taylormade TP5 - $50.00 dozen - SAVE $ Strixon Z star $39.00 dozen - SAVE $11 All Clothing shop wide - $45.00 Swing Easy Trent Well its great to see that Santa Claus has given us a new watering system for Christmas. Thanks to all the green staff for their work during this time, also thanks for all the members who could see the longterm gains during the construction of this project. We got to play on some very special greens and lots of eagles were had. I would also like to thank the members who have been coming out to the working bees all this help saves the club costs and keeps your membership fees down. It brings a smile to my face to see this club spirit and this type of attitude will take us a long way. What causes me to hook and slice is a common question we are asked; one of the simplest things that causes these problems is alignment. Rule Number One is your feet don t aim at the target your club face does with your feet on a parallel line to that. So yes, your feet aim left of the target. If you would to learn more about your alignment come and see the boys in the shop for a lesson. Swing eeeeasy... Trent 5

6 Seniors events recommenced on Tuesday 15 th January. These events have been well attended with fields averaging over 75 for the first four weeks of the new year. For the uninitiated, Seniors events are open to all members and visitors aged 50 years and over. They are played on Tuesday mornings with shotgun starts at 8am in summer and 8:30am in winter. Members have sponsored 22 Seniors events for the coming year. Please contact a member of the Seniors Committee should you wish to sponsor one of the remaining events. Thanks to Earl Lawrence and Kev Cathro for sponsoring an event this month. Seniors raffles have been well supported to date. A special thanks to Dave Phillips for running these raffles while Ian Cornwell is recuperating. Members are reminded that the next Glasshouse Mountains Zone event will be held at Maleny on Monday 11 th March. Please see our Zone Delegate Trefor Jones in due course should you wish to attend. Our Seniors Pennant Team has had mixed results so far this season and is presently sitting in fourth place on the leader board. Progress Points as at 5 th February are as follows Woodford 2 38 Woodford Pine Rivers 32 Caboolture 31 Pacific Harbour 30 Bribie Island 27.5 Wantima 27.5 Beerwah 21 Maleny
