1 THE MEADOWLARK BOARD OF TRUSTEES Dungeness Meadows Homeowners Association, Inc. Kevin Lindemuth - Chairman 461 Dungeness Meadows Ginger Miller Vice-Chairman Sequim, Washington Pat Hansen Corresponding Sec Office: Julia Anderson Treasurer Office Manager: Kathi Montalbine Genie Mixon Trustee Sheila Jaqubino - Trustee Office Hours: Mon-Fri 8 am to 2 pm Al Swift-Trustee Security: Nick Ward Volunteer: Linda Baker Maintenance: Arthur Wojnowski Recording Secretary Web site: This newsletter is published monthly by the Dungeness Meadows Homeowners Association Board of Trustees Volume 19 Number 10 October 2018 OCTOBER 2018 IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS: STREET PAVING Street paving will happen Monday, October 1 through Friday, October 5 beginning at 7:30 am and ending at 5:30 pm each day. While the work is being done only emergency vehicles will be permitted on the roads during the day. Therefore, alternate parking will be available so you can move your cars to this parking early in the morning if you need to get out on any particular day. After the work is done for the day, you can then move your car back to your house. The sections being chipped and then repaved are: Beginning at #321 to #292: Parking for this section will be in the clubhouse lot, along the golf course across from the parking lot and on the commons immediately after the clubhouse to the right. We will have someone available to come and pick you up with the golf cart if you need a ride to your car. 1
2 Beginning at #442 all the way up to the cul-de-sac by #408 & #419, plus a portion of the side street as far as #417: For this area, we have assigned specific parking at various locations that are within walking distance to your home. Please reference the map that was mailed to you and park in your designated space. Please refer to the map that was recently mailed to you for your assigned parking area. To reach the golf cart call Unfortunately this inconvenience cannot be avoided and everyone will be expected to comply with restrictions. So plan your doctor appointments, grocery shopping and errands accordingly. Thanks in advance for your cooperation. Winter hours are now in effect for the clubhouse, game shack, and yard waste pile. They open at 8 am and close at dusk. Please be aware of children coming off the school bus and walking down the exit hill. Also, keep in mind that golf carts also use the exit hill and please do not pass them on your way out. Two new stop signs are in place at the corners at #332 and #372 at the south end of the golf course. This corner is now a 4-way stop. If you have an item you feel should be discussed by the Board, please ask Kathi to place that item on the agenda for the Board meeting a week prior to the meeting. This way, proper research can be done if the item requires expenditure of association funds. 2
3 A big thank you to Kathy and Gerry Beltran for their time and effort to open and maintain the pool during the summer hours. To enhance the appearance of the Meadows, we are asking all residents who store items in their carports, driveways, etc. to please place any such storage behind closed doors. There has been a growing accumulation of dog waste along the sides of the dike/levee pathway. This is unsightly but more importantly unsanitary. We ask that if you walk your dog(s) along the path, please CARRY BAGS to pick up your dog waste and dispose of it appropriately Community Emergency Response & Map Your Neighborhood Report * One member of the Emergency Preparedness Committee watches worldwide earthquake activity almost daily. During the 30 days ending September 15th almost 2000 quakes over magnitude (M) 2.5 were reported. Of the 10 reported here, only one, a 6.2 M off the coast of Brandon, OR was noteworthy. The subduction zone is capable of a catastrophic 9.0 M. The long quiet period leads geologists to expect a major release of pressure in this century. The video presented gave us much good information about how to help ourselves and our neighbors in a disaster situation. * Did you know? trucks drive to the peninsula daily to deliver food to grocery stores. After a 9.0 earthquake not one of those trucks could bring food to us. * Here is one of many websites from which you can order food which will last many years in the original packaging: GROWING IN DUNGENESS MEADOWS by Amanda Diggin Dahlias: Part 2 Storing Your Bulbs The vibrant, hardy dahlia blooms continue to provide color in our gardens as the days are growing shorter, cooler and wetter. I know that the season s first frost is approaching, which will signal time to protect my dahlias from unfriendly winter elements. Last month s gardening article discussed ways to overwinter dahlia tubers in the ground. The alternative is to dig them up and store them over the winter. When the foliage dies back after the first frost, around November 1, remember to remove cages or staking, then cut the dahlia stalk back to about 6 to 8 inches. Gently dig around the base of the plant, 12 or more inches from the center, being careful not to cut tubers. A potato fork works well to loosen the soil and minimize tuber damage. Holding onto the stalk, lift the entire plant out of the ground. Cut off and 4
5 throw away any damaged tubers. Rinse the remaining tubers thoroughly with the hose. Let the tubers dry for a few days in the sun or bring indoors to dry if the weather is too damp. You can store the tubers individually. When dividing the tubers, remember to leave at least an inch of stalk connected to each tuber to allow for the inclusion of an eye (growth bud). Not all tubers will have an eye. Since the eyes are difficult to see in the fall, you may want to store the entire clump, intact, and then divide the tubers in the spring when the eyes are easier to detect. Attach a label with the variety name or the color of the blossoms to each stalk or label each container of individual tubers. Lightly pack the tubers, individually or as an intact clump, in sand, sawdust, cedar wood shavings, peat moss or vermiculite in pails or wooden or cardboard boxes or paper bags. Plastic bags are not recommended because they collect moisture and the tubers are likely to rot. If you do use plastic bags, leave them open. Make sure that the containers are stored in a dark, cool, dry place protected from freezing. Check the tubers several times throughout the winter. If you see signs of shriveling, dampen the medium so they don t dry out. If you see mold or mildew, the tubers are too damp. Throw them away. Soak tubers in a gallon of water with 2 tablespoons of bleach for 5 to 10 minutes before thoroughly drying or dust dry tubers with antifungal powder from a nursery or baby powder before storing them to help prevent mold or mildew and rotting. Some loss of tubers is expected so make sure you save more than you intend to plant. In the spring replant your healthiest tubers with visible eyes and enjoy their colorful blooms next summer. 5
