1 Shankers Golf Society - January 213 Newsletter What a way to start the new campaign with the full signs for our tournament at Ayala Greenfield having been hoisted a good week before the event was due to take place. Not only that but we have already achieved our target of getting 6 members on board for the year. As mentioned in earlier correspondence, we have trimmed back the limit of members this year from 8 to 6 with the aim of going for quality rather than quantity. We are basically looking for greater participation by members in tournaments this year and will closely monitor this situation over the coming months. If we find your participation is less than what we are looking for then you run the risk of not being invited to join next year. The strong winds you get out at Ayala Grenfield were a challenge again for all the golfers and it s evident from the scores submitted that almost everyone found the playing conditions to be extremely difficult. It wasn t that warm either as the sun didn t try to peep through the clouds until very late into the tournament. Thanks to management s cooperation, we were able to tee off a little earlier than normal which meant we were all finished out on the course a little after 2pm. Judging by the way Martin Pyke was playing though then I m sure he was wishing the day would never end. Martin s play matched the bright red Welsh shirt he was wearing. He was on fire!. The lovely Marge was on hand and dutifully walked the course with him. Being no mean slouch herself on the finer points of the game, I m sure she gave Martin a lot of advice on how best to tackle the windy conditions. Martin s gross 85 earned him 4 stableford points which saw him win the CHAMPION S trophy at a canter as he finished 6 points ahead of the second placed finisher. There were 7 pars and a birdie in his round but like the rest of the field, he also found the par 4 18 th too difficult to negotiate on the day. There wasn t one par on this particular hole. Martin wasn t content with just the one trophy as his tee shot on hole # 14 saw him lift one of the nearest the pin trophies as well. If he carries on like this then he could be looking for a bigger house to accommodate all his trophies!! Anyway, well played

2 Marttin, a very good round of golf indeed. The 1 points gained on the merit table also sets him up very nicely now for a serious challenge in this year s race for the green jacket David Dytian playing on his home course came second with 34 stableford points which was a creditable score considering how difficult the wind was but even David s score was no match for this month s runaway winner, the Mighty Welshman. Alex Campbell who asked for it to be recorded that he had arrived without incident this month secured 3 rd place with 33 points. Alex is playing very consistently these days and if it wasn t for the 6 months he spends in North Carolina each year then he would be a serious contender for the green jacket Jojo Ocampo another member of Ayala Greenfield and a new member to Shankers this year beat Joel Dimas into 4 th place on a countback after they both finished with 32 points. Another tie for 6 th place saw Jim Wagner edge out Steve Radonich, a Kiwi guest over from Guam, as they both ended up with 31 points. In 8 th place with 3 stableford points was the only man in the field using a long putter, Dale Roberts. Dale has until 216 to discard the broom stick as the rules bodies have already decided to ban them from then. 3 award. Rick went out in the first flight and it s little wonder his drive was not bettered by the chasing pack because his ball came to rest almost on the line of the fairway of hole # 17. We have a new range of trophies this year which seem to have gone down well with all those who attended this month s tournament. Due to the lack of sponsors though, we had to cut out a Runners Up trophy but thanks to the Southwoods Boys (Jeff, Larry & Bob) this was quickly remedied as they offered afterwards to sponsor this trophy for the remainder of the year. Our thanks go out to all 3 of them for such a wonderful gesture. Bob (Hartleip) actually picked up a trophy himself this month. This came in the form of the Mr Boracay award which came about after his ball managed to find 11 bunkers on the day. Such has been the seriousness of the crimes of late that the Committee has found it necessary for the Seat of Shame recipient to be tried in the Crown Courts under the auspices of a Crown Court Judge. This month s trial was therefore presided over by Lord Justice James. The prosecuting officer for the Crown, Sir John O Donoghue Q.C. presented the jury with the evidence which at face value seemed overwhelming. The accused, a Committee member no less, not only arrived at the first Committee meeting of the year last Monday after it had finished but then capped it all by arriving at Ayala Greenfield with his guest from Guam, with only minutes to spare before the last flight was due to tee off. His excuse seemed to be that he thouht we were teeing off at 1am!!. So much for the sent out earlier in the week requesting everyone to be there bright and early!!! The jury spent very little time deliberating over this case having found Sir John s evidence most compelling and were left in no doubt that the prosecution was correct when he said in his summation that the reasons given by the defence were nothing short of boloney. A guilty verdict was therefore returned by the foreman of the jury and it was then left to Lord Justice James to hand out the Seat of Shame as punishment to the accused,one RYNOR JAMANDRE, The judge did however praise the accused for the remorse he had shown and this along with the good spirit the defendant had displayed when being handed his punishment went a long way in ensuring he will be welcomed into the hallowed Hall of Shame. A total of 24 prizes were given out at the raffle that followed and our thanks go out to the following sponsors who helped to make this possible. 1) Union Jack Tavern supplied us with 2 Sunday lunch buffet vouchers

4 2) Outback Alabang supplied us with 4 food and drink vouchers each valued at P15. 3) The San Mig Pub and Bistro in Alabang supplied us with 4 meal vouchers each valued at P1.. 4) Ray Trinidad gave us 2No golf shirts to raffle off 5) Smart Telecommunications have given us 1 golf umbrellas to raffle. 6) Eagle Ridge supplied us with 2 green fee certificates and another was supplied by Lord Justice James. 7) Marie James supplied us with a green fee certificate for Manila Southwoods. Another newcomer to the area, Colin Taylor, will be able to make use of this prize 8) Sherwood Hills gave us 2 sets of green fee certificates each for a flight of 4 players. This was a thank you after holding our December tournament there. 9) Shane Warde who is one of the top coaching Pros in the area has given us 12 gift certificates for one hour s coaching with Shane out at Sta Elena. Shane started his professional career at the Royal Liverpool Golf Club which is probably better known as Hoylake and has been home to several Open championships. Mike Chipman was our first winner of this terrific prize. 1) Coral Beach Club provided us with a 2 night stay down at their resort near the Calatagan Golf Club. The lucky winner of this prize was Jim Wagner.. 11) RMD/Kwikform through Rik Borger have given us a very generous donation for the year which allows us to buy so many of our raffle prizes. 12) Gerry Evans continues to sponsor the hole in one with a cash prize of P1,. We ll have some new Shankers merchandise to raffle off next month which you can also buy. These will be appearing under the shop section of our website shortly. Most of the items shown here can be personalised at a very modest extra over cost. Then in March, we hope to have a new supply of shirts but first we want to try and get a sponsor to help out here. If you have any leads here then please let me know. We are not necessarily asking you as members to become personally involved in sponsorship. Our primary aim is to try to attract Corporate entities. We ll send out all the letters that might be needed but for this to happen, we need details of any contacts you or those working for you may have. Just pass on the contact s name, address and the name of the Company and we ll do the rest..

5 Based on past experience we have found hotels, resorts, restaurants and airlines to be particularly receptive to such requests as there is very little outlay for them in giving out free rooms for instance as very few operate at 1% occupancy. This also applies to airlines of course. On the contrary, those giving out free rooms are likely to have a return, not just from the publicity this might bring them but the guests themselves invariably end up spending money on food, drinks etc. Therefore, any help you can provide in sourcing new sponsors will be gratefully received. Next month will see us playing up at Splendido in Tagaytay. You will note this venue has been brought forward this year in an attempt to avoid the bad weather we experienced last year by playing in the rainy season.
