1 Shankers Golf Society - November 2012 Newsletter This month s tournament had to be re-arranged rather hurriedly once the organisers realised there wasn t enough interest being shown in going down to Calatagan to play. That was a big disappointment as so much had been planned and it was also meant to be our thank you to one of our major sponsors, the Coral Beach Club. If the Society is to continue in its present format then we need the support of sponsors so it is in everyone s interest to support such events as much as possible. Whilst our attendances have been excellent this year, this has come about in the main because of a small core of what we class as stalwart members Let s give this statement some substance. Whilst we have something like 80 members, almost 50% (37 to be exact) of you have not played in more than 2 tournaments so far this year. Then within this 37 figure we have 20 who have played in only one tournament or less. If we are being honest then we aren t really looking for this type of member. We would prefer that you give up your membership and just come along as a guest. We can then recruit new members who are more likely to become active in what the Society tries to achieve. Can we therefore please ask you to bear this in mind before deciding on whether or not to renew your membership for next year. Our aim next year is to limit our membership to 60 Members as we ll be striving for quality rather than quantity. Let s return to the tournament itself now. This was re-scheduled at very short notice at the Masters course in Southwoods. We were able to do this by getting enough Members of Southwoods to sign players in as their guests. Masters which is a Jack Nicklaus signature course is most challenging as the scores carded suggest! Archie playing on his home course turned out to be the surprise package this month winning the tournament with 35 stableford points. The lowest winning score this year.the highlight of his round was the way he played the difficult par 5, 4 th hole.. His drive set the tone with his ball coming to rest just 2 away from the line that had

2 been laid for the most accurate drive. That was not to be bettered although Dale Roberts got very close to the line himself. So Archie did not only go home with the Champion s trophy but he also got presented with the most accurate drive award. Archie ended up with a birdie on this hole which meant a net eagle as far as stableford was concerned. He never looked back after that and marched on to victory. Shean Bedi held off the challenge of Felipe Diego but only on a count back. This saw him claim the Runner s Up trophy with 34 points but more importantly, the 8 leader board points gained by finishing 2 nd meant that Shean cannot be caught now in the race for this year s green jacket. He s been asked therefore to go and get measured for the jacket this weekend and if it s made in time, then it will be presented to him at our Christmas Party on the 15 th December. Well done Shean, a most deserving winner especially whn you consider he comes all the way down from Baguio to play with us each month!. And to think some feel Calatagan is too far to travel to!! Felipe finished in 3 rd place and was closely followed by the fast improving Dublin John who scored 33 points. John s been off the booze for several weeks now and that combined with the tips he got when he was in Singapore watching Rory and others play could have triggered off this upsurge in form. Jun de Leon and Jeff Werhle tied for 5 th place with 31 points each but Jun just edged it on yet another count back. This was followed by yet another count back which saw Jojo Ocampo lower handicap beat off the challenge of Barry Williams. They both scored 30 points. The updated leader board is attached which incorporates all these scores. Hole # 3 was selected for one of the nearest the pin awards but this seemed to prove too difficult for everyone as nobody got their ball onto the green!! That s a first for Shankers if my memory serves me right. The other nearest the pin award on hole # 13 went to Felipe who seemed to have a good day one way or the other. Zaldy who was in contention for the green jacket up until yesterday seemed to have a rare off day after shooting 8 over his handicap. The 11 bunkers he entered must have had a contributory affect on his relatively high score. He did claim the Mr Boracay award though with those stats and with it, one of Dublin John s portraits. Larry Tekker can consider himself unlucky to receive the seat of shame award this month. It was more out of default due to the lack of feedback from all you would be informants, Larry s only crime was the occasional use of some colourful language. I can t believe you ve all turned into choir boys overnight so come on gents, let s start hearing from all you super grassers out there.

3 Larry must be praised though for the wonderful spirit and enthusiasm shown in receiving this most prestigious of awards. He now becomes a most creditable member of the Society s Hall of Shame. All in all it was a wonderful day s golf on the course with glorious weather and complimentary mini burgers for all the players to enjoy at one of the tea houses. Proceedings closed with our customary raffle which this month saw everyone win something.. Our thanks go out to our various sponsors for making so much of this possible. These are:- 1) Union Jack Tavern supply us with 2 Sunday lunch buffet vouchers 2) Outback Alabang supply us with 4 food and drink vouchers each month 3) The San Mig Pub and Bistro in Alabang supply us with meal vouchers every month. 4) Eagle Ridge supply us with 2 green fee certificates every month 5) Coral Beach Club offer a super prize each month which is a 2 night stay down at their resort near the Calatagan Golf Club.. 6) RMD/Kwikform through Rik Borger have given us a very generous donation for the year which allows us to buy so many of our raffle prizes. Rik also gave us yet another box of Callaway balls to raffle off this month. 7) The Makati Shangri-La supply us with 3 fabulous prizes each month - a gift voucher for a night s (weekends only) accommodation for 2 with buffet breakfast and 2 more gift vouchers for meals at their Circles restaurant. 8) The Manor and Golf Club up at Camp John Hay in Baguio who thanks to Shean Bedi have given us a fantastic package each month a 2 night stay for 2 guests at the Manor plus a round of golf for 2 persons. 9) Sinclair James, supplied us with our new shirts plus the Winner s and Runner s Up trophies. We have Lord Sinclair of Carlisle to thank for these. 10) Dublin John sponsors the nearest the pin and most accurate drive trophies. John s creative ability is also responsible for the artwork that has gone into the Seat of Shame and Mr Boracay portraits that are given out each month. 11) Gerry Evans continues to sponsor the hole in one cash prize of P10, 000. The major prizes this month went to:- 1) The Shangri La meal vouchers were won by Jeff Wehrle and Jun de Leon respectively

4 2) The night s stay in the Shangri La with buffet breakfast for 2 has been held back and will be part of the raffle prizes we ll be giving out at our Christmas Party.. 3) John Barker who is based in Queensland has a 2 night stay down at the Coral Beach to look forward to before he goes back to Oz.. 4) John Kempfer another visitor and a house guest of Alex Campbell can look forward to a couple of nights up at the Manor in Camp John Hay with a couple of rounds of golf thrown in as well at the adjoining golf course. The other prizes given out were Shankers merchandise in the main and included, cooler bags, golf umbrellas, locker bags, golf bag travelling covers and a travelling golf bag. Sinclair James will be giving up their sponsorship of the trophies next year so if any of you know of someone who would like to take over this sponsorship then please ask them to contact me. I reckon this will come to about P40 for the year. The sponsor s name will of course be featured on the trophies Shean Bedi also brought with him this month, 2 more gift vouchers for a 3day, 2 night stay at the Forest Lodge in Camp John Hay. We ll raffle these off also at our Christmas Party. Your help in getting all this sponsorship for us is very much appreciated Shean. Rik Borger has also confirmed he will be doing something for us again next year so again, thank you Rik. Don t forget guys., Rik has a charity golf day organised at Camp Aguinaldo on Thursday 14 th December for which details have already been circulated. With Christmas fast approaching and if you are still searching for something to buy for your loved ones then you may want to consider buying one of these:- A businessman was preparing to go on a long business trip, so he thought he'd buy his wife something to keep her occupied. Before I close I must remind you of 2 key dates. a) If you want to be included in this year s Christmas Party which is being held in the Union Jack Tavern on the 15 th December then you must let me know by the 30 th November at the latest. b) I ve already alluded to membership renewal above but you should all note the closing date for renewals is 21 st December No more reminders will be sent out for either of these 2 key dates so it s up to you now. A status report is attached showing who has signed up so far for next year. Next month s tournament will be held at Sherwood Hills on Friday 14 th December. This is another Jack Nicklaus designed course and yet another championship golf course for us to enjoy. I hope to see you there; a note with all the details will follow at the end of this month.
