1 Shankers Golf Society - December 2012 Newsletter The busy festive month of December kicked off for us at Sherwoods Hills which was the venue for our final tournament of the year. This was our first visit to Sherwood Hills as a Society and it certainly won t be our last. In fact, we ve already booked it for September next year. The greens were probably the best we have played on this year. Superb golfing weather made it a truly memorable day and one that our 2 birthday celebrants will have surely enjoyed. Yes, we had 2 members whose birthdays happened to fall on tournament day. With a combined age of 108 there were a lot of candles to be blown out on the cakes that had been shipped in from a nearby cake shop. Heartiest congratulations go out to Larry Teker and Ray Trinidad. Their golf didn t quite match up to the occasion it s sad to report!. Larry s son was across from the States for dad s birthday and made sure the Teker family went home with at least one trophy when he got the most accurate drive on hole # 12. Well done Sam and here s hoping to see you play with us again in the future. With Shean Bedi, this year s green jacket winner, having to cry off at the last minute, we saw someone come through to win the Champion s trophy who had been one of the also rans. JoeL Dimas had been languishing in the lower half of the merit table with just 7 points but the 10 points gained by winning this month with 39 stableford points saw him shoot up the leader table with a 7 th place finish. It just goes to show, if you can string 3 or 4 good rounds together in the year then you stand a good chance of winning the Green Jacket A comedy of events preceded the presentation of Joel s trophy. The large globe at the top the trophy, which we had hitherto thought to be crystal, dropped off and fell onto the tiled floor below. How it didn t shatter remains a mystery but it does beg the question whether it really is crystal!! Joel was advised to get the super glue out when he got home and I undertook to have words with the trophy producer before we place the order for next year s supply. We are still looking for a sponsor or sponsors for these by the way. To sponsor all 5 trophiesl anounts to something like P70k for the year or we could split this into 2 packages, P4Ok for the winners and runners trophies and then P30k for the 3 fun

2 holes trophies. The sponsors names will appear on the trophiies and will also feature on all our publications such as the website, newsletters etc.etc. If you know of anyone who would be interested in sponsoring these then please get in touch with me as a matter of urgency because we are really looking to finalise this before the end of December. Tthe runner s up trophy went to Alex Campbell but only on count back after he had tied with Ray Rutherford on 38 Stableford poiints. Well done Alex, we hope that made up for all the frustrations you encountered during the course of the day more about this later!! Ray s third place finish earned him 6 Stableford points and saw him finish in the merit table just 7 points behind Shean. Missing those 2 tournaments in October and November could have proven costly. Ray did play in 9 tournaments though during the year which is most commendable indeed. Pride and place for most appearances this year goes to 2 Filipinos Zaldy Roxas and Ray Trinidad who only missed one tournament each. Thank you gents for such wonderful support. In 4 th place this month was Jeff Wehrle with 37 points, Jeff s relatively new to the Societyr but has already featured twice now on our leader board so he could be a dark horse in next year s campaign. Dublin John s game has come on leaps and bounds since he switched from the holy black Irish stuff to that which you drink at Communion. Another 33 stableford points this month saw him gain more points on the lader board with his 5th place finish. Could he be another dark horse for next year or will the temptation of all that ale that will be flaunted in front of him during this festive season be too irresistible? Zaldy came in 6 th with 32 Stableford points with Raul Posadas just edging out Jerry Evans for 7 th place on count back after they both tied on 31 points. Raul had some consolation when he took home with him, the nearest the pin trophy on hole #16. David Dytian one of our Committee members one the nearest the pin award on hole # 2. Sam Teker as mentioned above having one the most accurate drive trophy. Well done to all our winners this month. A guest of Rynor Jamandre, Sang Ha Leigh who has recently come to live here from Singapore will be able to hang one of Dublin John s portraits in his new house after having been awarded the Mr Boracay award for the most bunkers entered. Sang Ha seemed overjoyed with his award and the feedback from Rynor suggests he could be a regular attendee at next years tournaments. Unlike recent months, when we have struggled to come up with nominees for the Seat of Shame award, the adjudicators were spoilt for choice this month. We had one player who thought he was the only golfer that marks his ball with a black line as

3 an aid when putting It s little wonder therefore that he ended up hitting another player s ball with his approach shot to the green on hole #7. He now knows Mr Jerry Evans marks his ball in a similar way along with probably 90% of the world s golfers!!! Then we had another player whose drive went further upwwrds than it went forward. His ball never even reached the ladies tee box!! How did he end up champion this month I ask myself with shots like that? And those of you who were wondering where the official marker was on hole # 16 for NTP need wonder no more. One of the birthday celebrants forgot to put it out!! Reaching the ripe old age of 36 was obviously all too much for him. Alex Campbell who stays down in Punta Fuego when he s not playing golf in North Carolina became the latest member to enter the Hall of Shame. The frustrations alluded to above came about after he got lost somewhere in Cavite on his way to the Club in the morning. This was despite having been sent his own personal map some days before. It transpires he missed the turning into Sherwoods Hills and was well past Trece Martinez before realising something was wrong. A quick phone call to yours truly then saw him having to make a quick U- turn and then travel in the opposite diection at speed to make his tee time. That in itself was felt to be deserving of the Seat of Shame but Alex s problems compounded on the way home. He was actually spending the night in Alabang with relatives but on the way back it seems he took the wrong turning somewhere and ended up going along Aguinaldo Highway in the wrong direction and heading towards Tagaytay rather than Alabang!!. The drama didn t end there either. After a 2 hour journey he realised when he finally got to Alabang that he had left his clubs at the bag dropout. That means another detour for him via Sherwood Hills on his way back to Punta Fuego.!! If wife Gloria reads this newsletter then may I suggest a good GPS system would make a wonderful Christmas present for Alex this year. In true Shankers spirit though, Alex took everything in his stride and the smile never disappeared from his face. Thank you sir for being such a wonderful sport. You are a most deserving recipient of this very special and distinguished award. We also had 3 representatives present this month from Smart telecommunications who gave a brief presentation on some of their products. This is all part of a courtship with them at the moment to try to get them on board as one of our sponsors for next year. They brought 10 golf umbrellas with them which we ll be raffling off at subsequent tournaments. As we mentioned to them though, it would be nice to see their logo on the new shirts we plan to have made soon. The day ended with our customary raffle and with the help from our sponsors everybody went home with something. The sponsors along with some of the prizes handed out were:-

4 1) Union Jack Tavern supplied us with 2 Sunday lunch buffet vouchers 2) Outback Alabang supplied us with 4 food and drink vouchers. 3) The San Mig Pub and Bistro in Alabang supply us with meal vouchers. 4) Eagle Ridge supplied us with 2 green fee certificates. 5) Coral Beach Club provided us with a 2 night stay down at their resort near the Calatagan Golf Club.. 6) RMD/Kwikform through Rik Borger have given us a very generous donation for the year which allows us to buy so many of our raffle prizes. Rik has followed this up with another similar donation for next year. You have been most kind sir. 7) The Makati Shangri-La supply us with 3 fabulous prizes each month - a gift voucher for a night s (weekends only) accommodation for 2 with buffet breakfast and 2 more gift vouchers for meals at their Circles restaurant. 8) The Forest Lodge at Camp John Hay in Baguio have given us 2vouchers for a 2 night stay at the Lodge.. 9) Sinclair James, supplied us the Winner s and Runner s Up trophies. 10) Dublin John sponsors the nearest the pin and most accurate drive trophies. John s creative ability is also responsible for the artwork that has gone into the Seat of Shame and Mr Boracay portraits that are given out each month. 11) Gerry Evans continues to sponsor the hole in one cash prize of P10, 000. The major prizes this month were won by the following:- 1) Dublin John and Ray Rutherford got the Shangri la circles restaurant buffets. 2) Doha Ron won the Shangri La s Hotel accommodation package. 3) David Dytian will be able to take th family down to Coral Beach Club for a couple of nights stay. 4) Whilst Wendel Sanders has the Forest Lodge at Camp John Hay to look forward to. The merriment continues tonight with our Christmas party and then if you are available next Tuesday, Baring s inviting us all for a drink and a finger buffet at his San Mig Pub & Bistro in Alabang Town Centre. That s from 5pm to 7pm.
