1 Rotary International District 7890 No. 2 HOT DATES IN THE DISTRICT DISTRICT GOLF TOURNAMENT August 8, 2011 Oak Ridge Golf Club Feeding Hills, MA 100th Anniversary Celebration Hartford Rotary Club September 17, 2011 Crowne Plaza Hotel Hartford, CT district foundation dinner November 3, 2011 Chez Joseph Agawam, MA SAVE THE DATE ROTARY INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION May 6-9, 2012 Bangkok, Thailand For More Information, Contact: Eileen Rau, DGE ebrau@comcast.net Message from Governor Sue In the newsletters for August, September, and October, the focus will be on my three goals for the district for this Rotary year. First: growing and sustaining membership in clubs, as well as increasing the number of clubs in the district. Amazingly enough, August is membership and extension month. Second: fulfilling our commitment to eradicate polio. September is the month we will look to all Rotarians in 7890 to contribute something to this amazing humanitarian commitment. Third: reminding all Rotarians to spread the word about our brand, what makes Rotary unique as a service club the vocational service component invigorated with the 4-way test. August 2011 During this first quarter of the Rotary year, it will be my privilege to visit with each of the 62 clubs in District I hope each of you will look forward to renewing our acquaintance and will bring thoughtful questions and concerns to the meeting. The Assistant Governors, in cooperation with our Membership Development Co-chairs, Jim Russell and Karen Owens, are developing a series of meetings about club membership growth which we all hope will be convenient and effective. The best way to determine when and where a membership meeting will be held in your area will be by checking the district website frequently. This year s presidential citation is promoting not only a net increase in membership but also 85% retention of members. Perhaps a new way to ensure you retain members is to survey those who have left your club voluntarily. Your club presidents have set an impressive membership goal for a 7.9% increase across the district. They need the help of every member to achieve this goal. Wear your Rotary pin with pride. Remember, you are an ambassador for Rotary every day, not just the day you attend a club meeting or participate in a service project. An inquiry about that pin may just afford an opportunity ask this simple question Have you been asked to join Rotary? Continue developing a great Rotary habit: check for the most current news about our clubs and the district by visiting the district website ( ) every few days, and, while there, click on the link to my blog ( If you do this, and either seems stale, please be sure to me (suehklock@gmail.com ) with suggestions. Last but not least, if you use Facebook, consider joining the district s Facebook page. And remember, the best face is the one you show at your club meeting where fun and fellowship remain the glue. Best wishes to all, Sue, District Governor

This is often the worst time to discover that there are errors on the report or that their score is much lower than they anticipated. With today s tight lending guidelines, many consumers have no hope of obtaining new credit if their score is under 700. Another factor confusing the issue is the many offers on the internet to obtain your credit score. Very often these credit systems do not reflect the true FICO system used by lenders. A true FICO score ranges between , the higher the better, and a score over 720 is considered A credit. Visit your local credit union to find out how to get a copy of your report and FICO score. 4 Happenings Round The District... Six members of the Rotary Club of MANCHESTER volunteered again this year to read in Washington Elementary School and other schools in town. One of the books read dealt with the issue of polio and Rotarian Beth Stafford talked to the students about Rotary s goal of eradicating polio throughout the world. The students of Alice Molloy s fourth-grade class decided to raise funds by doing various odd jobs to help give polio vaccines to children in Third World countries. In June, the WINDSOR/WINDSOR LOCKS Rotary Club supported Windsor High School teacher, Nancy Hammarstrom for her humanitarian trip to Cambodia with Teachers Across Borders. The Club provided funds for school supplies to help the Cambodian teachers and their students. They also left behind supplies for future use in the classrooms. District 7890 eclub received a District Simplified Grant to help establish a children s garden at the Abrahams Park in Trumbull, CT called The Little Green Thumb Ambassador Garden. The program is dedicated to teach 4 to 6 year old children, along with their parents, the joy and reward of gardening together by participating in a community garden. The Rotary Club of MONSON is accepting donations to be used to assist those residents in the town that were affected by the massive Tornado that struck the Town of Monson in June. Over 300 households, businesses, municipal buildings and land areas were impacted by this act of nature. Funds received will be used to Adopt Families who are in need of any items for replacement. Please mail contributions to Rotary Club of Monson, PO Box 145, Monson, MA Your generosity will be greatly appreciated. For further information, please contact Monson Rotary Central at The unveiling of New Britain EMS tent that was donated by the NEW BRITAIN/BERLIN Rotary Club took place at the 4th of July fireworks display which was attended by an estimated 30,000 people. This tent will be used at local events where large crowds are anticipated.

Clubs from Bloomfield, Broad Brook, Danielson, E-Club, East Hartford, Farmington, Glastonbury, Manchester, Rockville, Watertown, Willimantic and Windsor/ Windsor Locks, CT along with Massachusetts clubs in Palmer, Southwick, West Springfield and Wilbraham/Hampden have raised $26,000 to build a complete gravity fed water system with gray water filters and vented pit latrines for the 92 families (540 people) that live in the rural community of Popobaj, Guatemala. This is the sixth project continuing the goal of Rotary International to have every Rotary Club support an international water and sanitation project. By working together and pooling their resources, the Rotarians have been successful in adding size and strength to their chosen projects. Two Rotary clubs from neighboring Rhode Island District 7950, East Greenwich and Wakefield, RI and the Albina-Portland, OR Rotary Club also contributed to the project thereby exceeding the original goal of $26,000.

7 District Fellowship Golf Outing August 8th The District Fellowship Golf Outing this year will be held on Monday August 8. We will again be at the Oak Ridge Country Club in Feeding Hills, MA. This event is not a fundraiser! Ii is a fellowship outing. A chance to meet and greet friends from other Rotary Clubs in the District and at the same time enjoy a day of golf. For some strange reason the number of golfers from Connecticut always outnumber the number from Massachusetts. Hopefully this year we can make the two the same. This year, working with Oak Ridge Country Club we are able to hold the cost to the same low level as last year. For a wonderful BBQ lunch, 18 holes of golf (with cart) and a banquet dinner the cost is only $ Or if you just want to join us for the banquet dinner the cost is $ Of course there will be the usual putting contest, hole in one contest, closest to the pin, as well as low gross and low net prizes. Bob Richman from the East Hartford Club will again be registrar. Send the registration for your foursome to him at Rich.Bob66@hotmail.com. Gifts suitable for raffle prizes or door prizes are always welcome as are Tee sign sponsorship. Tee sponsorship is only $150 and your message will reach Rotarians throughout the district. 8 Rotary District Sarah Anne Lane Windsor, CT Did You Know? Planting trees has huge symbolism for Rotarians and the traditional has gone on for many years. Rotarians have planted a treet in the name of friendship, international undertsanding, and comrodarie. Dating as far back as the 1920 s and 30s when president emeritus Paul Harris traveled other countries, and even when visitors came to his home, Comely Bank. Planting trees soon became a hallmark of his travels, including in Australia, Brazil, Estonia, Japan, Mexico, and New Zealand. In My Road to Rotary Harris recalled: With the cooperation of Rotarians and local governments, I have planted friendship trees in the parks and playgrounds on five continents of the world and even on some of the major islands of the seas. Our trees stood as symbols of international understanding and good-will (Rotary.org, 2010).
