MESSAGE FROM THE RYDER CUP CAPTAINS Since its inception in 1927, the Ryder Cup has embodied golf s high ideals of sportsmanship, honesty and integrity. Throughout the years, players have represented their countries and the game of golf with pride and honor. RBS cover ad While partisanship is natural, it is important to remember the Ryder Cup is intended to be a friendly competition between the best golfers on two continents. The sportsmanship of the spectators plays a vital role in the continuing spirit and success of the Ryder Cup. In order to preserve this great tradition, there should be no excessive partisanship by the gallery. While all good shot making should be applauded, the prospective misfortunes of an opposing player should never be celebrated. Nor should comments of any kind be made while a player prepares to make his shot. On behalf of all the players, your cooperation in making the 37th Ryder Cup the most memorable in history is greatly appreciated. Enjoy the 2008 Ryder Cup! Nick Faldo, Captain European Ryder Cup Team Paul Azinger, Captain U.S. Ryder Cup Team

HISTORY OF THE RYDER CUP What is today one of the world s most respected golf events, began over 80 years ago when American professionals, attempting to qualify for the 1926 British Open, formed a team to play their British counterparts in a simple exhibition match. British players trounced the Americans by a score of 13 ½ to 1 ½ points and, in the process, so impressed Samuel Ryder, a wealthy British seed merchant, that he determined this should become an ongoing challenge. Mr. Ryder offered an impressive, solid gold trophy for which professionals from the United States and Britain would compete in a series of matches. He stipulated that these matches be held every other year, with venues alternating back and forth between the two countries. Ryder went so far as to specify that each member of the competing teams should be a native-born citizen of his team s respective country, as well as a member of his country s Professional Golfers Association. The Ryder Cup was first played in 1927 at Worcester Country Club in Worcester, Massachusetts. Led by Captain Walter Hagen, perhaps the game s most colorful and influential player, the United States Team captured a respectable 9 ½ - 2 ½ victory. The U.S. Team dominated the matches in the early years and as time progressed, concern for the event s popularity ensued. In 1979, the PGA of Great Britain widened its team selection process to include all natives of continental Europe, and the days of U.S. Team pre-eminence vanished. Since that time, the United States has won the Cup six times, while Europe has been victorious eight times. Samuel Ryder s cherished Cup will continue to travel back and forth between the continents for years to come, delighting competitors and spectators alike. HISTORY OF VALHALLA GOLF CLUB For Dwight Gahm, a prominent Louisville business leader, the dream of creating a traditional golf-only facility capable of hosting a world-class championship began in In 1981, Gahm, along with his three sons, commissioned Jack Nicklaus to determine the feasibility of a private golf facility in the Louisville area. Gahm desired a high caliber facility that could host a major championship while providing the highest level of service. The study s findings supported Gahm s concept and Nicklaus was hired to design the course. In 1986, the 486-acre golf course known as Valhalla opened for play for the club s first members. Nicklaus created a unique combination of a links looking landscape for the front nine holes and a more traditional parkland looking landscape for the back nine, featuring hills, trees and streams. In 1993, PGA of America Chief Executive Officer Jim Awtrey announced that Valhalla Golf Club would be the site for the 1996 PGA Championship. By this time Valhalla had already achieved the distinction of being rated the No. 1 golf course in the State of Kentucky. Since then, Valhalla Golf Club has also been the site of the 82nd PGA Championship in 2000, the 35th PGA Professional National Championship in 2002, the 65th Senior PGA Championship in 2004 and now the 37th Ryder Cup in September of At the conclusion of the 2000 PGA Championship, The PGA exercised the right to purchase Valhalla, continuing its tradition of golf excellence. 8 9

BIOGRAPHIES OF THE CAPTAINS TEAM SELECTION Paul Azinger Paul Azinger, a native of Holyoke, Massachusetts, turned professional in 1981 after attending Brevard Junior College and Florida State University. He won his first Tour victory in 1987 and also earned PGA Player of the Year honors that same year. Azinger has been a member of four Ryder Cup teams (1989, 1991, 1993 and 2002). In 15 career Ryder Cup matches, he has compiled a record of 5-7-3, including a mark in singles play. Paul Azinger has won 14 worldwide professional championships in his career, including an emotional victory at the 2000 Sony Open in Hawaii after battling non-hodgkins lymphoma in his right shoulder. Azinger s battle with cancer shortly after the 1993 Ryder Cup earned him the 2005 Golf Writers Association of America s Ben Hogan Award, presented to an individual who remains active in golf despite a physical handicap or serious injury. Azinger will be the 25th Ryder Cup Captain guiding his team in one of the world s most compelling sports events. With Azinger at the helm, the U.S. Ryder Cup Team will be looking for its first Ryder Cup win since Nick Faldo Nick Faldo is the most successful British golfer in history. Faldo is a dynamic golfer whose achievements include being a three-time Master s winner and capturing the No. 1 world ranking. His Masters titles were earned at Augusta in 1989, 1990 and Faldo enters his role as 2008 European Ryder Cup Team Captain with ample Ryder Cup experience under his belt. His resume includes 11 previous Ryder Cup appearances and the distinction as the Ryder Cup s most prolific point scorer. In addition to his Ryder Cup achievements, Nick Faldo has also won three Open Championships in his career and is currently under contract as commentator for Golf Channel and CBS television networks. Captain Faldo hopes to use his experience, coupled with the camaraderie and tradition of the European Team, for success in United States A points system will determine the top eight players for the 2008 United States Ryder Cup Team. The points will be based upon the following: Prize money earned in 2007 major championships (Masters, U.S. Open, British Open and PGA Championship ~ one point for every $1,000 earned). Prize money earned in official events in 2008 from January 1 through August 11 (one point for every $1,000 earned, excluding the major championships and events played opposite major championships and opposite World Golf Championships). Prize money earned in 2008 major championships (Masters, U.S. Open, British Open, PGA Championship ~ two points for every $1,000 earned). Prize money earned in 2008 events played opposite the major championships and opposite World Golf Championship events between January 1 and August 11 (one-half point for every $1,000 earned). The United States Team Captain, Paul Azinger, will make four selections to complete the 12-man team. The Captain s announcement of his four selections will be made on Tuesday, September 2, 2008, which is three weeks after the 2008 PGA Championship. Europe Selection for the European Team is based on points earned on The Ryder Cup World Points List and The European Points List. The Ryder Cup World Points List is comprised of Official World Golf Ranking points won by a European Tour Member from each tournament in which he participates between September 6, 2007 and August 25, 2008 and thereafter, in the 2008 Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles. The European Points List is comprised of points (1 point = 1 euro) earned by a European Tour Member from all officially sanctioned events counting towards The European Tour Order of Merit from between September 6, 2007 and August 31, 2008, or the conclusion of the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles, whichever is the latter. The final team will comprise: (a) The leading five players on The Ryder Cup World Points List as of Sunday, August 31, (b) The leading five players, from The European Points List, not otherwise qualified from the Ryder Cup World Points List, as of Sunday August 31, 2008, or at the conclusion of the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles, whichever is the latter. (c) In addition, two further selections will be made by The European Team Captain, Nick Faldo after the conclusion of play of the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles

FORMAT OF THE RYDER CUP There are a total of 28 matches, played in three different forms of match play as follows: Foursome 8 Four-Ball 8 Single 12 Foursome Foursome play is a match where two golfers compete on a team against two golfers from another team and each side plays one ball. The golfers play alternate shots until the hole is played out. Team members alternate playing the tee shots, with one golfer hitting the tee shot on odd-numbered holes and the other hitting the tee shot on even-numbered holes. The team with the lower score wins the hole. Should the two teams have the same score, the hole is halved. The Foursome format is played on Friday morning and again on Saturday morning. Four 2-man teams from the U.S. will play against four 2-man teams from Europe each day. Four-Ball Four-Ball play is a match in which each member of the two-man teams plays his own ball. Four balls are in play on each hole. The lowest score from each side will represent the score for the side. The side with the lowest score will win the hole. Should players from each side tie the lowest score, the hole is halved. The Four-Ball format is played on Friday afternoon and again on Saturday afternoon. Four 2-man teams from the U.S. will play against four 2-man teams from Europe each day. Single Single is a match in which one player from the U.S. Team competes against another player from the European Team, each playing his own ball. The player with the lowest score on each hole will win the hole. A player wins this head-to-head competition when he is up by more holes than there are remaining to play. On Sunday, all twelve team members from the U.S. Team will compete against the twelve team members from the European Team. RYDER CUP TERMINOLOGY Match Play A game played by holes, and not by cumulative score. How is a hole won? A hole is won by the team with the lowest score on that particular hole. For example, if Team A makes a 3 on Hole 1 and Team B makes a 5 on Hole 1, Team A wins the hole and would be 1-up for the match. How is score kept for match play? Score is kept by the number of holes up (won) and the number of holes to play. For example, if Team A wins the first hole, they would be 1-up with 17 holes to play. All Square If a match is tied or level while in competition, then it is considered all square. For example, if both teams make a 3 on Hole 1, then the match would be all square with 17 holes to play. Dormie A side is considered dormie when it is as many holes up as there are holes remaining to be played. For example, if Team A were 2-up with two holes to play, Team A would be dormie. When does one team win the match? A team will win the match when one side is up by more holes than there are holes remaining to be played. For instance, if Team A is 2 holes up with only 1 hole to play, the match is over and one point is awarded to the winning team, Team A. How many points can you win during each match? Only one point is awarded for each match won. Concession A player may concede an opponent s next stroke at any time provided the opponent s ball is at rest. The opponent is considered to have holed out with his next stroke and the ball may be removed by either side. A player may concede a hole at any time prior to the start or conclusion of that hole. A concession may not be declined or withdrawn

Can a match end in a tie? If a match is all square after 18 holes of play, the match is considered halved and each team receives one half of a point. There are no extra holes in Ryder Cup play. How many points does one team need to win The Ryder Cup? There are a total of 28 points in Ryder Cup competition (eight Four-Ball, eight Foursome and twelve Single ). One point is awarded for each match won. The team with the most points at the conclusion of The Ryder Cup wins the Ryder Cup. Can The Ryder Cup end in a tie? If, at the conclusion of The Ryder Cup, the teams are tied at 14 points apiece, the team who last won the match retains The Ryder Cup Trophy. Since Europe won the Ryder Cup in Ireland in 2006, it would retain the Ryder Cup. 23 LOUISVILLE GATEWAY TO BOURBON COUNTRY In 1783, Evan Williams established the first commercial Bourbon distillery in downtown Louisville. The practices that he began then are still used in today s Bourbon making process. In fact, the area along Main Street between what is now Louisville Slugger Field, and the Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory, and beyond was known as Whiskey Row. At one time, before prohibition, along Whiskey Row there were 50 distilleries. Now there are only about a dozen distilleries in the state with Louisville producing one-third of all Bourbon. Although Louisville s distilleries aren t open to the public, like the seven along the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, Louisville is the gateway to Bourbon Country and home to the Urban Bourbon Trail where you can visit eight of the world s best stocked Bourbon bars. The restaurants along the trail offer bourbon-inspired dishes and are the ideal starting and ending point of a bourbon-rich tourism experience. Your experience will continue just a short drive from Louisville along the historic Kentucky Bourbon Trail at seven distilleries in central Kentucky, as well as the historic towns, museums and restaurants that give Bourbon Country its rich culture and distinction. You can mix and match. Spend one, two or even three days visiting all seven distilleries. Below we ve divided them up by their general locations. Before starting your adventure, make sure to check out the Kentucky Bourbon Trail exhibit, pick up information and get advice at the Louisville Visitors Center at 4th and Jefferson Streets. 27 COMMONWEALTH OF KENTUCKY HOST STATE The Commonwealth of Kentucky welcomes the Ryder Cup! The Department of Tourism presents the information on the following pages in order to give you ideas for a wonderful stay in Kentucky. Enjoy the beauty, the fun and the Unbridled Spirit! 50 51

Horses, bluegrass music, bourbon and history are just a small sampling of what defines the Unbridled Spirit of Kentucky. Our most important asset, however, is our people. Kentuckians have a pride in our state and a passion for hospitality. We welcome the Ryder Cup visitors with Unbridled Enthusiasm! It is no idle boast that Kentucky is known as the Horse Capital of the World. As early as 1800, the quality of Kentucky horses was known throughout the country, resulting in todays multibillion dollar industry. All attention turns to Churchill Downs in Louisville on the first Saturday in May for the Greatest Two Minutes in Sports, the Kentucky Derby. But you can experience horse racing throughout the year at one of Kentucky s several racetracks. Be sure to visit the only park in the world dedicated to horses, the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington. The Park will be in the spotlight when it hosts the 2010 Alltech FEI Games the World Equestrian Championships, the first time the Games have ever been held outside of Europe. Visit While Kentucky is best known as the birthplace of bluegrass, it s incredibly rich and diverse musical heritage boasts other musical genres including folk, blues, gospel, jazz, opera and pop. The International Bluegrass Museum in Owensboro pays tribute to the artists that created Kentucky s signature brand of music. Once an obscure cousin of country music, todays bluegrass has a wide ranging appeal. A Kentuckian, Bill Monroe, is considered the Father of Bluegrass Music. A trip along the Kentucky Music Trail includes Renfro Valley and the Kentucky Music Hall of Fame and Museum. Take in a show at the Entertainment Center, featuring live country, gospel and bluegrass music and comedy. A portion of the Kentucky Music Trail includes 144 miles of US 23, birthplace to more than a dozen well-known country music stars

COMMONWEALTH OF KENTUCKY INFORMATION CONT D There s only one Louisville Slugger. Only one Muhammad Ali. Only one Kentucky Derby. And only in Louisville can you visit a museum that celebrates each of them. Take a tour through the factory where Louisville Slugger baseball bats are made and see the World s Biggest Baseball Bat. The Muhammad Ali Center chronicles the life and cultural achievements of the three-time world heavyweight boxing champion. Enjoy all the excitement of the Greatest Two Minutes in Sports at the Kentucky Derby Museum. For a different tribute to horsepower, head to Bowling Green and visit the National Corvette Museum, featuring the iconic sports machine. Take a guided tour of the Corvette Assembly Plant, the only production site in the world for this American classic. No trip to Kentucky would be complete without a visit to a Kentucky distillery to experience the art of producing America s only native spirit. Several historic distilleries along The Kentucky Bourbon Trail, in central Kentucky, offer fascinating tours of this 200 year old art. Visit Kentucky may be best known for bourbon, but distinguished wines are also produced in the Bluegrass State. In fact, Kentucky was home to America s first commercial vineyard in Small boutique wineries can be found throughout Kentucky. Stroll through the beautiful vineyards and sample the many varieties of Kentucky wines offered in the tasting rooms. Visit

COMMONWEALTH OF KENTUCKY INFORMATION CONT D Visit the Niagara of the South, Cumberland Falls and you may catch a glimpse of a moonbow, a unique phenomenon visible on clear nights during a full moon that appears nowhere else in the Western Hemisphere. Cumberland Falls, in the Daniel Boone National Forest, is one of 52 Kentucky State Parks. Mammoth Cave is the longest known cave system in the world, with 367 miles explored and mapped. The National Park features the most famous cave in the world but there are many equally beautiful caves available for tours in this central Kentucky karst area. Celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of one of Kentucky s most notable sons, Abraham Lincoln. Born February 12, 1809, in Hardin County, Kentucky, Lincoln remained tied to his birth state by family, friends, political mentors and political rivals. During this bicentennial celebration, , the entire nation will celebrate Lincoln s life and legacy with special events along the Lincoln Heritage Trail. These historic sites highlight the key people, places and events that established Lincoln as a Kentuckian. For information on the Lincoln Heritage Trail, visit Land Between the Lakes offers 170,000 acres of wildlife, history and outdoor recreation wrapped by 300 miles of undeveloped shoreline. The National Recreation Area includes an Elk and Bison Prairie for an opportunity to view these magnificent creatures in a natural habitat

COMMONWEALTH OF KENTUCKY INFORMATION CONT D Find out for yourself why Kentucky State Parks have been called the nation s finest. Kentucky has 52 State Parks 17 are resort parks with lodges and restaurants, more than any other state. No matter what your interest, you can discover your Unbridled Spirit with the fantastic natural scenery and recreational opportunities. The Kentucky State Parks Golf Trail includes 13 championship 18-hole courses, several of which have achieved national ranking. Visit Kentucky is your playground for adventure. Located at the junction of four of the largest rivers in the United States, Kentucky has more navigable waterways than any other state besides Alaska, making the commonwealth a haven for boating enthusiasts and fishermen alike. Kentucky s diverse landscape also provides ample opportunities for caving, hiking and climbing. Visit

COMMONWEALTH OF KENTUCKY INFORMATION CONT D Many of the world s most successful companies have discovered that Kentucky, land of the thoroughbred, is also a great place to breed their fast-paced business. Just look at our track record: Industrial electricity costs that are among the lowest in the nation. A tax structure that s among the most competitive in the region. An ideal location within 600 miles of two-thirds of America s population. Kentucky also has some of the most progressive financial incentive programs anywhere, with a variety of options suited to meet the needs of companies on the move. We have a workforce that consistently outperforms the national average for productivity. And we have an unsurpassed quality of life. When you consider the total package, it s easy to see why big names like Humana,Toyota, GM, Ford, Alltech, Lexmark, Ashland, Yum, Citigroup and UPS all have major operations here. Established Kentucky industries range from logistics to healthcare to advanced manufacturing all of which rely on the ability to swiftly change with the times in order to stay a step ahead of the competition. Kentucky s commitment to agile and creative support has helped these industries grow and flourish. Bright futures depend on bright ideas. That s why Kentucky s science and technology community is constantly growing and developing a culture of innovation that is second to none. Here are examples of Kentucky s leading-edge thinking: v The University of Kentucky s New Product Development and Commercialization Center connects small rural manufacturers with university-based research teams to test, develop and commercialize new products. v The Kentucky Cabinet for Economic Development brings the public and private sectors together in a statewide network of Innovation and Commercialization Centers that helps scientists and entrepreneurs form companies and find investors to turn intellectual property into market-ready products. v To support Kentucky s small biotech companies, the state s unique SBIR-STTR Matching Funds program is the nation s first to match both federal Phase 1 and Phase 2 awards dollar-for-dollar. This program is available to Kentucky-based companies and those willing to relocate to Kentucky. v Idea State U, one of the nation s largest state-sponsored business plan competitions, is helping support the next generation of Kentucky innovators and entrepreneurs. During its inaugural competition in April, winning teams from the state s four-year state universities took home nearly $100,000 in prize money for their proposals to launch real-life Kentucky businesses.
