1 The Official Publication of ARCHERY SA. Vol. 12 No. 1 Edited by Carol Ashlee September - November 2014 Quarterly PRESIDENT S CORNER The National and State Indoor Archery Championships were held in July at Ingle Farm and Goolwa. As numbers that each venue could accommodate were limited, places filled fast. (You were warned!) Tournament Director, Glenn Martin maintained a waiting list of people wanting to enter if others withdrew and, happily, all requests were met. From all accounts, the events ran seamlessly and ARCHERY SA s thanks are offered to The Farm and GSA for hosting the venues. Of course, the issue of capacity would be addressed if the venues were available for both days of the weekend, but the fact is that is not possible. One alternative is to find another venue to hire, but that sends us back to 2005 when we ran the last face-to-face Championships and the significant logistics issues that event employed; i.e. transporting and setting up all the necessary equipment and then the pack-up, transport and storage at the end. This was carried out by a willing band of volunteers (about 15 from memory). Could we find 15 such willing people today? Another alternative is the acquiring of an indoor venue that becomes ARCHERY SA s home. That way we d have permanent butts set up and access for the two day event. So, if anyone has a spare warehouse to sell, please let us know! With the Australian Masters Games to be held in Adelaide in 2015 and the Clubs agreeing that an archery event should be held, an Organising Committee is to be formed. As I write this, a meeting to do just that was set down for 4 September. Even if you missed this meeting, it will never be too late to get involved. Your expertise and ability will be appreciated. Events are now back in focus with the Cressy Shoot and State Clout done and dusted. Then there s the TFIAC Archery/Golf Day, along with the Whyalla Invitation, Tyro and Vets events and AAC s Silver Quiver; and that s just September. Oh, did I mention the Trans Tasman Teams Challenge? We wish Clare Reuther from AAC as a member of the Australian team good shooting and an enjoyable time at the event being held in Brisbane let s hope the Brisbane weather is kind! October sees the Barossa Shoot, followed by the Alice Springs Masters Games, the Nationals (in Geelong) and SVAC s Ros Johns Field Shoot. So there s plenty of opportunity to broaden your horizons! Clubs are now being asked to consider the dates for their events and/or State events they wish to host, for inclusion in 2015 State Calendar. This includes State Ranking shoots, QREs and Invitation tournaments. Please ensure you get those dates and applications to the Secretary sooner, rather than later. In the first half of 2013, ARCHERY SA participated in a survey. This involved seeking comments from over 50 stakeholders about how ARCHERY SA performed. While the report came back that we did reasonably well overall, there were some areas to improve upon. One of those suggestions was for the development of a Disability Discrimination Action Plan. A draft plan has now been developed and is to be presented at the AGM in October and you will be asked to become familiar with and contribute to its ultimate development. The Plan will then be presented at each subsequent AGM to review and update progress, to assist ARCHERY SA and its Clubs to present the sport to all sections of the community. Until next time. Bruce Lang President 1

2 FROM THE DELEGATE S DESK Items from the Minutes June, July and August A discussion paper has been forwarded by Archery Australia regarding Longbow Rules. A motion was carried reading That the alternate wording, ( the bow must correspond to the traditional form of longbow or flatbow, meaning, when strung the bow must form the classic D shape with no visible reflex.) be adopted as ARCHERY SA official response to the document and that ARCHERY SA present a submission to the C & R committee to that effect. A new Membership Form template has been forwarded by Archery Australia requesting that clubs take up the opportunity to use this document. It has been circulated due to Privacy Act changes. The venues for the National Championships has been changed, ensure you have the correct information if you intend competing. The minister for Recreation and Sport requested Archery take part in the 2015 Australian Masters Games. Clubs have agreed to this and a Committee is to be formed to control this. Has been some recent negative feedback from members of public re being unable to use crossbows at the various Clubs. The secretary requested information from clubs regarding crossbow participation. G Dabovich had an informal conversation re possible use of Victoria Park for State Events. The current timing equipment owned by ARCHERY SA is in need of upgrading. Jeff Nicoll will liaise with interested parties to get this item corrected. The ARCHERY SA AGM will be held in October and the following positions are up for election. Vice President, Equipment Officer, Tournament Director, Secretary, Juniors Administrator, Publicity Officer, SAOC/ACGA delegate (2 nd position) and Grants Officer. Suggestions are required for a possible Guest Speaker. A Governance Proposal was tabled and the following motion was put and carried. "The Policy Committee (and interested persons) review the current Constitution and provide a report at the September meeting." Suggestions are required by the September meeting on ways to improve the selection process of Indoor teams for National Championships. Concerns were also put forward that some archers were unable to take part due to not enough room at the event. (refer Presidents report) 2 Clubs took up the option to apply for an ARCHERY SA Club Grant. Both of these clubs will receive $500. A Lord Mayor s team trophy has gone missing. If anyone know the whereabouts please inform ARCHERY SA. 1 st Division Recurve. EDITOR 2

3 ARCHERY AUSTRALIA NEWS Website Archery Australia is pleased to announce the pending release of Archer s Diary the official scoring and tournament management software of Archery Australia Inc. Over the coming months the Archer s Diary and Archery Australia Inc through the IT Committee will work together to enhance and develop this product to take our sport into the future. Experienced tournament archers and coaches should be explaining Rules and processes to their Club members, preparing them at Club level for participation in Tournaments. One item that needs explaining is the purpose of the 3-metre line. The Archery Australia Board is pleased to announce the introduction of new annual awards available to members. Australian 720 Star With the introduction of the 720 rounds and the growing popularity of these shorter and quicker rounds, the Board has decided to introduce new Australian 720 Star awards. The Australian 720 Star will also be awarded annually, this will enable archers to annually achieve or exceed their performance from last year proving an incentive for constant improvement. The Australian 720 Star would be awarded for both recurve and compound at this stage, and other divisions could be catered for in the future. Australian 720 Star will be introduced from 1st January 2015 and will be available for purchase by RGB and Club Recorders in November of There will be 5 scores levels available The Australian 720 Star will be come in two colours White for recurve and Black for compound. RECURVE COMPOUND Men Women Men Women Australian Field Star Like the Australian 720 Star the Australian Field Star will be based on the Australian Star with different wording and coloured inserts. The awards can also be achieved annually. This will enable archers to annually achieve or exceeds their performance from last year proving an incentive for constant improvement. The Australian Field Star would be awarded for recurve, compound, barebow (recurve and compound) and longbow. The usual Archery Alliance rules will apply with one additional requirement. 1. TAA members can participate no more than 4 times in a year, if they wish to participate more than 4 times a year they are required to join the club at which they have been shooting and subsequently the Association. 2. TAA members must be a current financial member of Archery Australia or ABA or 3DAAA. They must be able to provide proof of such membership before they are permitted to participate. 3. As is the current practice all Alliance visitors are required to sign a Temporary Membership form each time they visit a club. The Archery Australia Board excitingly announces the introduction of a separate Para and VI (Vision Impaired) National Championships. THE NATIONAL CLUB CHALLENGE The Archery Australia Board would also like to announce the introduction of a new national competition, the National Club Challenge. The National Club Challenge shall be a tournament aimed directly at club archers with the scores and results nationally managed. In essence the National Club Challenge will be what used to be known as a Postal Shoot but will be Internet based with live and up to date results utilising the Archery Australia Archers Diary Scoring and Results system. ARCHERS DIARY The success and popularity of Archers Diary has seen many clubs signing up to use the Tournament Scoring and Results program; which is provided free of charge to all RGBs and Archery Australia registered clubs. From the 1st January 2015 all tournaments and QREs listed on the Archery Australia Calendar are to use the Archers Diary Scoring and Results system. This allows for the further development of additional features, i.e. auto record checking, automatic generation of ranking lists, etc and reduces the workload for all. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Hello? Is Longbow part of Archery Australia? Another excellent issue of Bow Press. I read the Archery Australia News with particular interest. It was wonderful to learn of the initiatives being proposed and how we are all members of Archery Australia, not just affiliates. I was agog to learn more of the National Matchplay Series, especially as it was open to all archers. I couldn t find Longbow among the categories but this was obviously an oversight, soon to be corrected. Oddly enough it was also accidently omitted from the Precision Awards but I am confident this will also be rectified. The National Archery League also looked as if it would appeal to Longbow archers especially at club level. I noticed that distances and rounds were considered with specific mention of Recurve and Compounds. What a coincidence, Longbow not mentioned again! This is a mistake surely; I am now a member of Archery Australia and that must count for something? Joe Vardon AAC 4

5 Published with the permission of Shooting Lines. Feb/Mar 1975 COACHES, WATCH THIS! NOSTALGIA No matter how much help we give archers in general to get their equipment in good tune, it is useless unless we explain to them carefully just what each change does and how it improves their shooting. For instance, after carefully adjusting an arrow rest or plunger to achieve good flight, it is not uncommon to find it screwed out an 1/8 th or so because the wind was blowing from the left, or a new string fitted with a heavier serving which does not fit the nocks at all. Not that these two things are all that can go wrong, but they are just examples. The whole point is to explain in simple terms what is done and why. The coach who just moves a sight up or down when the beginner just can t hit the target, is not really helping at all unless he says why! BOOK REVIEW The Archer s Craft (second edition) by Adrian Eliot Hodgkin (with an introduction by E. G. Heath) This book was written in the mid-1d940 s and first published in It made no pretense to being a treatise on target archery, describing that as being only a means to an end. It is full of wonderful information on the art of archery as a craft as well as a sport and in the tradition of the generations of craftsmen now gone. This is one of the few books that perpetuate the real skills of the bowyer, fletcher and arrowsmith, and without a work of this nature much would be soon forgotten. This book is worthy of a place in anyone s library, reading.
