2 Another article left in the publicity officers drawer anonymously... Archery was one of the few sports in which women could participate in 19th century...and apparently it attracted the very crème de la crème of society In the nineteenth century, sporting opportunities for women, especially for those members of the so-called upper classes of the colony, were very restricted. Generally, the team sports were out but women could ride to the hunt, play croquet and tennis or join an archery club. Archery in early seems to have been particularly select. According to one newspaper, the 1860 season of the Archery Club finished in June with a final Grand Meeting in the grounds of St. Peters College... and it was attended by, to use the reporter s words... the very crème de la crème of Society. The participants seem to have been divided into promenaders and archers. To amuse the promenaders there was a brass band and the younger members could waltz or do the polka when not promenading or watching the competitors. For the archers, this was the all important final meeting of the year and the chance to win some very valuable prizes. The men s season champion, Captain Blyth of the 40th Regiment, won a handsome amethyst brooch... and the woman champion of the season, Miss Young, received a richly ornamented bracelet. Captain Blyth also won a silver claret jug in another section. There were floral paintings and a gold pen and pencil set to be won and the handicap prize was a valuable diamond ring. For ladies not interested in archery, croquet was one of the very acceptable alternatives. Most of the grand homes in the city boasted their own beautifully prepared lawns for croquet. However, the first croquet club was not formed in the city but in the country... in fact the first croquet club in Australia was formed here in South Australia at Kapunda, in STOLEN EQUIPMENT FROM EDEN FIELD ARCHERS Eden Field Archers advise that their clubrooms have been broken in to and damaged. Equipment has been stolen. Please report any suspicious sales of archery equipment to police.
3 Thank you to the person who put this in the publicity drawer... THE NUMERICAL ANALYSIS OF THE BUM SHOT It was only my release that was bad but I only shot a six. If each respondence action or relevant base is given a numerical value, it can be seen how one shot can affect a shot more than it should. REMEMBER: 1. That the thought in your head is quicker than the arrow 2. That everything that affects a shot is your fault, even including equipment failure 3. For every action there is another action that can negate the affect of the first action 4. It s too bloody late after the shot has gone! EQUIPMENT E 30 CONCENTRATION C 20 STANCE S 10 RELEASE R 10 BOW ARM B 10 ANCHOR A 10 CONFIDENCE (I CAN) I 10 Which = = 100 A ten NOW if something goes wrong e.g. release, then if R = 10 that shot should be a nine. THAT S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A CHAMPION AND AN ALSO RAN. When champions stuff their release up it only affects his shot by its own value, therefore a nine is shot. BUT what happens when you do it? You get a seven or a six, don t you? WHY? Because when you release the arrow, your highly critical brain says You stuffed up the release you idiot; that is going to be a stuffed up shot. your confidence goes out the window your bow arm drops Your concentration lapses Therefore R+I+B+C=50 and therefore you score a five. BECAUSE IN THE TIME YOUR BRAIN HAS TOLD YOU THAT, AND THE EFFECT IS FELT BY THE OTHER RELATIVE ACTIONS, THE ARROW IS STILL AFFECTED. WHAT DOES A CHAMPION DO? SIMPLE: Champions isolate their mistakes so that they only affect the shot for there own value. PROVE IT... AND THAT IS THE DIFFERENCE: ONLY ALLOW YOUR MISTAKES TO AFFECT THE SHOT FOR THEIR OWN WORTH Good Luck to all archers attending the fourteenth Australian Masters Games in Geelong from the 4th - 12th October, GRAND OPENING - BAROSSA ARCHERY CLUB INVITATIONAL SHOOT TO CELEBRATE THE OPENING OF THEIR NEW GROUNDS. Date: 22nd September, 2013 Time: 9.30 am for am start Venue: Heinemann Park, Tanunda Contact: Dennis Traeger dennistraeger@bigpond.com by September 14
4 Thank You To Pam Spurgeon and Richard Harvey who have kindly donated historical items to the club. WANTED Your knowledge, know-how, skills, 2 Saturday mornings a year and HELP! Hello, my name is Roger Moore. Most of you may have heard my name from time to time, but many of you don't know me from a bar of soap. To put you in the picture, I am the Junior Coordinator of the Archery Club Inc: Along with Glenn Pauley the Assistant Coordinator, (and a small team of dedicated club members), we are responsible for running the junior programme (AJADs) on Saturday mornings. The programme runs for about 40 weeks a year. AJADs do not shoot from the Christmas break-up to the second Saturday in February, the middle Saturday in the school holidays and at any time the club require the grounds for tournaments. The purpose of this communication is to appeal to your generosity as far as contributing a small amount of your valuable time to helping out with the juniors. As a club member, you are supported in many ways by the provision of a first class facility for shooting, a huge dedicated membership who provide coaching, assistance, equipment and advise. Along with this are the many 'dogs body' type jobs that go towards making this the great club it is, envied by many. In return I am asking you to give a miniscule amount of time back to the club by supporting the junior programme. We need at least another 3 assistants every week for a couple of hours to support myself, Glenn Pauley, Chris Lech, Jeff Nicoll, Junior Alexander, Andrea Laforet, Graham Winston, Taren Furnell, Stuart McCulloch and Anke Warner. Most of these guys turn up on a very regular basis. I recognise that not everyone can contribute time on a Saturday for one reason or another. Other commitments take priority obviously. If just half the club members could contribute just a little time that would be great. We only ask for:- 2 Saturday Mornings a year You do not have to be a coach, just turn up at 9.00 am any Saturday. It's all about standing, observing and helping where you can. Oh yes. If you think we are 'babysitters' think again. Many of these fine young athletes are great first rate archers, like Damien Pauley, who recently beat all the adult members to win the club championship. We all have a great time at AJADs. Just ask any of the guys above. It's a pleasant atmosphere, we have fun, laughs and a great camaraderie. As Jeff Nicoll said, "I wouldn't miss AJADs for anything. Hmm! maybe a tournament." Thank you Roger Moore
