2 Greetings Family: Opening Ceremonies The 56th Annual Championship is here! The Tournament Committee has spent countless hours planning a spectacular event for you and your family, and I trust you ll see the fruit of their labor the week of June 20th. We have a treat scheduled at this year s Annual which is the Advocates Pro Tour. The founder of Advocates USA, Ken Bentley, and their Board of Directors formed the Tour as an opportunity for African-American male golfers who aspire to play on the PGA tour to develop their skills in a highly competitive format. We hear about the financial challenges associated with one s pursuit of the PGA tour and minorities are often at a disadvantage due to the lack of funding during their journey. The Pro Tour is one effort to bring them closer to their goals, as the winner will have their fees paid for Qualifying School ( Q-School ) which is a several thousand dollar commitment. The June tournament is the second leg of the Pro Tour which concludes in Los Angeles at Chester Washington Golf Course later this year. The economy still weighs heavily on us; however, we must remain steadfast and continue to support the Gimme 4 initiative. Your member clubs need your participation. For those who have embraced this initiative, thank you. Two of this year s sanctioned tournaments practically sold out Desert Mashie and Cosmopolitan, so keep up the good work. If you recall, I made a commitment to award the member club that sent the most players to Sanctioned Tournaments from January 1 thru December 31, 2009 with a prize, and I m pleased to announce that the winning club of Gimme 4 is Tee Divas and Tee Dudes from Los Angeles, California. In conclusion, be on the lookout for the launch of our new website ( as I anticipate it going live within the next 30 days. Thank you to James McLaurin from the Deep Drivers Golf Club who is dedicating his time in the design and development of our new site. I trust you ll be pleased with the product, as this is another effort to not only re-brand Western States by utilizing the newest technology available to enhance the mode of communication throughout our membership. Hit em straight and I ll see everyone in Denver! 2

8 Tee Divas & Tee Dudes Celebrate the Journey presentation in April. This proved to be a winning combination as it got everyone Fired Up playing on designated courses and gaining extra points when playing with another member. Results showed with improved scores, with making new friends and with winning a little money. Indeed we were happy to have been fired up. Gloria Howard, Player Development Chair, and her committee kicked off The Player Development Program in April with over 24 members signing up. They had an afternoon program where she introduced the program, the golf courses and the program goals and objectives. In addition to the play dates she enumerated a number of outside lessons available to the participants. There are 3-par courses for newer golfers and regulation courses for experienced golfers. Most of the play dates were filled and paid for before the reception was over. The self-introductions by each person explaining how and why they became interested in golf were very moving and revealing. 8 If 2009 was a year of something different for Tee Divas and Tee Dudes Golf Club it ushered in a decidedly different Vice President Janis Carter and her committee blasted out 2009 with a vengeance by hosting a bang up Christmas party. The party was toasted with wine provided by wine connoisseur Joseph Alexander. It set the stage for Tournament Chair, Cheryl Roots, to hand out trophies to all the year-end winners with wine and champagne toasts to each winner. Beulah Stamps and Donald Gridiron, Jr. were named Club Champions, which called for extra toasts. Needless to say every one had to dance off the after effects of all the toasting. Fortunately we had a dynamic D.J. who provided music for all ages. We are grateful to the membership that our Christmas project successfully provided financial aid for three college students prescreened by the Brotherhood Crusade as needing help; and that we were able to purchase two very expensive pieces of learning equipment for the Jeffery Foundation. The Jeffery Foundation provides educational experiences for children with learning disabilities. For the first time in the 14-year history of Tee Divas and Tee Dudes Golf Club a Tee Dude, Rodney Gants was announced as the new Tournament Chair. He accepted the appointment with gusto and is already making his influence felt. Interesting he has selected as members for his working committee several other Dudes, humm! Ladies, let s watch these men! As a club which had its beginning from the Women in Golf program, we have a special affinity for the women and men coming out of that program. We do everything possible to make sure these new golfers keep playing year around. While we have a fully operational Player Development Program from April to the middle of September, there is a gap from September to April. This past winter Patty Boykin and Millie Chadwick presented a program Fired Up for Golf challenging all members to play through the winter to work on their game through a competition which would begin in October and conclude with an award This March we were proud to host WSGA President, Tamera Baxter and The First Tee of Southern Los Angeles Board Member, Shawn Washington, at our Membership meeting. We were grateful that they took the time from their busy schedule to spend the time exchanging ideas with our membership. The President asked us to participate in the Gimme Four program. She has asked every club to send at least 4 members (one foursome) to each sanctioned tournament. This will help to insure the success of the sanctioned tournaments. Tee Divas and Tee Dudes have made an effort to attend as many tournaments as possible. We have already had representation at four of the seven sanctioned tournaments held so far this year. We had eight members at the Vernoncrest Sweetheart Tournament, three members at the Pacific Desert Classic; Beulah Stamps, our Club Champion was the Ladies Championship Flight, Low Gross winner; Four members at the 65th Annual Cosmopolitan Golf Club Tournament; Rose Mary Spriggs was the Women s B Flight, Low Net Winner; Four members at the Desert Mashie Annual. We will have 27 golfers at the WSGA Annual in Denver; and we will conclude our Annual Away trip at the Leisure Continue on page 9 Tee Divas & Tee Dudes

9 Tee Divas & Tee Dudes Continued Hour Tournament in Portland, Oregon. We usually have members attending the following sanctioned tournaments Tee Masters; Paramount, Women in Golf North-South Shootout, Pro Duffers-West, and The Tri-Club Classic. This year we won t make all of the tournaments, but next year we ll try again. Tee Divas and Tee Dudes has had personal difficulties to overcome this year, our President Doris LaCour has been sidelined with foot surgery. Her well-trained surrogates have stepped up and carried on. But don t get it twisted, Doris is in charge! The Women in Golf Southern Area Representative, Jerrie Shepherd s mother passed away after a long illness. Jerrie is, as the English say, keeping a stiff upper lip. Her committee is carrying on but Jerrie, too, is in charge. Although our Club doesn t have an annual tournament we do have periodic Anniversary Celebrations. Next year 2011 we will have our 15-year Anniversary celebration trip and tournament in some distant city or port. We will invite members of WSGA to join us for this important celebration. 12 Junior Golf Director Debbie Moaning WSGA Jr. Golf Chair The 30th Annual Alan Bennett Jr. Golf Tournament took place in Oakland, California this past August and was a huge success. Ed and Dolores Presley took on the challenge of making this happen just as they did by teaming with Bill Dickey in Team Presley welcomed 118 juniors, 77 adults, and six junior observers with a warm and hospitable reception making everyone s experience in the San Francisco Bay area memorable. Many thanks to the volunteers who worked tirelessly in the planning and execution of this years event, the sponsors for supporting the effort, and the City of Oakland for embracing us on this momentous occasion. Join me in celebrating the accomplishments of the participants; congratulate those who won their flights, and look forward to next year s tournament. WSGA Jr. Ch WSGA 2010 Tourname We will probably have 120 to 125 ju 12 Area Junior Golfers Southern Calif 40 Las Vegas 35 Pacific Northwest 25 AZ/COLO 10 Northern 10 plus TOTALS 120 plus

13 Las Vegas has made arrangements for accommodations at another nearby hotel, which works out fine, because we would have needed additional rooms at the Holiday Inn around the corner. Also, Southern Area, Las Vegas, and Pacific Northwest will each have a chartered bus, which may solve our transportation dilemma as regards expenses and logistics. Las Vegas and Portland have already offered its bus to transport additional Junior s if needed. I would hope that Southern California will also. The tentative Schedule of Events is being revised as information is being received. For example, since some of the participants will not be arriving until mid-afternoon on Tuesday, August 3rd, we are rescheduling the SF Bay Area bus tour to approximately 2:30PM, Thursday, Aug 5th (after play) and giving the afternoon arrivals free time until dinner that evening. My niece, a former SF resident who has significant ties in SF is in the process of procuring a tour guide for each bus. Mr. Presley s wife has been in communication with the Oakland Space & Science Observatory to provide for the increase in the number of expected participants. They are also working on rearranging the sites for the Tuesday evening dinner to accommodate the increased numbers. After he receives a firm count, he can determine the number of shirts & caps and the number of trophies that need to be ordered. The contents of the brochure will include a history of the WSGA Junior Championships from inception, in addition to pictures of participants from the early years. WALL STREET An article from the Wall Street Journal (mainly for Area VP to share with Jr. Program Directors) Topic Golf s Big Problem: No Kids.. air Reports nt (Oakland) Report niors and 60 adults participating: Adults Totals plus plus 183 plus COMMUNICATION To better our communications, I want a list from each Area VP of the Jr. Programs under them as well as name of organization, Director, address, telephone number, website, address, how often are you visiting the programs in your area and how often are you conducting an area group meeting. If you do or don t have this in place I want your plan sent to my (damoaning@comcast.net) by July 15th. You will also be required to forward me a quarterly report regarding the status of your area, first report will be due September 30th sent to my as well. Thank you. FUTURE In closing going forward the WSGA Jr. Tournament will be assigned 3 years out in advance (that would give the areas more time to do fundraising for the tournament since our membership is down and we can t for see the future) my goal is to find a corporate sponsor that would fund our tournament. 13

14 Pacific Desert Classic The Honors Paramount Inland Empire The Pacific Desert Classic (PDC) began as a joint venture between The Honors, Paramount, and Inland Empire Golf Clubs in an effort to create an invitational tournament that would provide exciting competition among the members of the Pacific Desert Area and friends. Sierra Lakes Golf Club in Fontana began as our gracious host-course for this 2-day event. As the tournament grew, we would later add Oak Quarry Golf Club, a 72-par championship course in Riverside, as the second venue. The PDC has always been a fun-filled event hosting as many as 115 golfers. Our tournament has not been without its many challenges, i.e. unpredictable weather, organizing, the departure of one of our host clubs, etc. However, with commitment to persevere, we are now celebrating 10 years strong. Today, the PDC is a much anticipated sanctioned tournament and the cohosts are The Honors and Inland Empire Golf Clubs. This year, on April 9 & 10, the tenth anniversary was celebrated in style. Each day 80 plus golfers experienced excellent conditions, camaraderie, two challenging rounds of golf, and fun. Participants competed for cash and prizes including a $10,000 hole-in-one contest. Immediately after Friday s play at Oak Quarry, the hospitality at the Holiday Inn in Ontario provided a relaxing atmosphere where participants enjoyed a scrumptious buffet and on into the evening with live entertainment and dancing. Day two activities continued at Sierra Lakes Golf Course with a luncheon and awards presentation immediately after play. Special thanks to our WSGA dignitaries and club presidents in attendance in particular President Tamera Baxter, and Past- President George Colebrook. We d also like to commend our supporters from the WSGA community and friends who came from far and near for making this 10th Anniversary celebration a special one. Our tournament sponsors have been superb. For the past eight years, Shawn Washington Accountancy Corporation has stanchly supported our efforts and ideas for making our tournament a success. This year we welcomed a new sponsor, Cheryl Stephen of State Farm Insurance Agency. One program that is dear to our hearts is The Honors Junior Golf Program under the direction of James W. Lewis. Each year at the PDC, participants are invited to buy into our 50/50 Hole contest to help support our juniors. This year more than $800 was raised and will contribute to ensure the success of our goals for our junior golfers. Congratulations to all the winners of the 2010 Pacific Desert Classic! We appreciate your support in the past and we are looking forward to seeing you at the 2011 PDC for another exciting and competitive tournament. 14 Pacific Desert Classic Flight Champions Men s Championship Flight 1st Low Gross...Dave Wooding...The Honors st Low Net...Erik Williams...LA Fairways nd Low Net:...Kenny Jordan...Valley View Men s A Flight 1st Low Gross...James Lewis...The Honors st Low Net...Theron Jones...The Honors nd Low Net...George Colebrook...Desert Mashie Men s B Flight 1st Low Gross...Andrew Brewer...Valley View st Low Net...Dock Jones...The Honors nd Low Net...Bobbie Smith...Cosmos Men s C Flight 1st Low Gross...Keith Lee...The Honors st Low Net...Bill Stringfellow...The Honors nd Low Net...James Curtis...Inland Empire Ladies Championship Flight 1st Low Gross...Beulah Stamps...Tee Divas/Dudes st Low Net...Tamera Baxter...Bay Area nd Low Net...Sandy Cohen...Valley View Save the date April 9 & 10, 2011 More on page 21 Pacific Desert

17 Area Vice President Report Arizona/Colorado This past golf season at Jackson State University was my sophomore season. If anyone has heard of a term called the Sophmore Slump, well I had a little of that. My season consisted of many ups and downs score wise. Although, it wasn t necessarily a great scoring season, I had many great experiences both on the course and off that opened my mind to what can be. For instance we traveled a little more, going to such humdrum places like Atlanta, Florida and that God awful place called Honolulu Hawaii. I met so many different very good golfers that it actually helped me realize I have some issues in my swing I need to work out. One of the many highlights of this year included winning the SWAC conference championship again. One of my teammates, Jennifer Sells from Houston won and I placed third shooting = 154 for the two day tournament. I was also selected again to the SWAC First Team All Conference for a second time. This victory advanced us to the NCAA regional s which were held in Columbus Indiana. Our team game plan was to make a statement, and set the pace for other HBCU s. To show these other teams that we came to compete and to be a First for Coach Eddie Payton and get through to the next round. We went out there with positive hearts and determined minds despite the seemingly difficult course/conditions and played to the best of our abilities...the thing that hurt us the most was our inability to capitalize on great shots...we each had those couple 2, 3, 4 holes a round that crippled our score. Nevertheless, overall, regional s was a tremendous learning experience! I understand that being good or great at anything is a process. It is though this good to great process that I feel we progressed as a team and even though I didn t have the best scoring average, I feel that my mental aspect of the game has matured. The process has brought learning how to grasp the positive side into view. This summer, I am on a mission. A mission to become better by enhancing my olf skills physically, mentally, and emotionally because I certainly do not want to be the same golfer next year that I am now when next season starts. So, I am striving to be what I want to become and I will achieve that, by first, conceiving an image on the inside, second, having the courage to believe in myself to conquer that image. And finally, having the willpower and discipline to carry-out what I must do every day to increase my whole golf game. Overall, I would not change a thing. I had a great time with great people and travelled to some great places. Cammi Stith (far left) with Jackson State Golf Team Desert Mashie Golf Club paid the entry fees for three juniors to participate in the Thunderbird Collegiate Amateur Invitational Golf Tournament, in April at Karsten Golf Course. 18 Women in Golf Southern Area Women in Golf Southern Area hosted the 20th Anniversary North/South Shootout & Celebration held at the beautiful Marriott Shadow Ridge Resort in Palm Desert, California. The Resort provided a wonderful setting for over 60 ladies to greet each other, make new friends, and play great golf. The banquet room was beautifully decorated, the buffet meals were outstanding, and there were door prizes galore. This year s event was unique, as there were two separate golf tournaments, one on Friday and another on Saturday. On Friday, WIG took time to honor and say thanks to 12 ladies who pioneered Women in Golf s Shootout in 1990 and have supported the event for 20 years. Each honoree was presented with a long stem red rose and a certificate from California State Senator Curren D. Price, who praised them for their loyalty and support to the organization. The honoree s were Dorothy Hawkins, Ann Bryant, Beulah Stamps, Esther Wilson, B.J. Braswell, Edna Buckley, Myretta Long Oliphant, Cheryl Marshall, Catherine Marshall, Saundra Pierce, Bobbie Smith, and Ethel Williams. Saturday s tournament was the Shootout where the North competed against the South in a stroke play format. Each lady in attendance received a heart pendant necklace and souvenir booklet filled with pages of WIG history, pictures and current information. Women in Golf Chair, Katie Catron, was acknowledged for her dedication and tenure as WIG Chair with a lovely plaque presented by Doris LaCour, President of Tee Divas & Tee Dudes. Special thanks to the men of Inland Empire Golf Club and The Honors Golf Club, as they brought 20 members to the tournament to assist in filling the field. The Shootout winner for 2010 was the South and tournament results are as follows: Special thanks and appreciation to our Tournament Chair, Myretta Long, for an outstanding job on this year s Shootout & Celebration. Looking at Women in Golf s future, I encourage all ladies to get involved with your Area Representatives and make a commitment to assist in bringing more ladies to WSGA s member clubs. This single act will increase the number of Women in Golf members and WSGA s membership at large, and we want the next 20 years of WIG to reflect the same positive changes that we have seen since Continue on page 19 Women in Golf... SCGA/Pub Links Conversion to GHIN: Posting in all of California, Oregon, Washington, Northern Nevada, Colorado and 63 other major Golf Associations across the US is now very simple via GHIN Network. A score posted in California pops up in your score history the very next day. Members in Southern Nevada and Arizona may still use the IGN Posting Network. Those members who were assigned a 2nd GHIN# in Southern CA during the conversion should report this info to my office, so that I may merge the 2 numbers into 1. Dewey Clark Sanctioned Tournament Score Posting: I will be posting all WSGA 56th Annual Tournament Scores. Willis Case is moving tees forward for Women, but not yet rerated. And the Men s tees are going to be re-rated as well. I will use the Handicap Manual Section 5-2(g) posting scores from Men s and Women s un-rated tees, unless CGA rates them prior to our event. Respectfully submitted, Dewey Clark, WSGA Handicapping 21

22 In Memoriam Henry A. Marshall June 11, 1933 May 9, 2010 Mr. Henry Hank Marshall was a member of Western States Golf Association for over 40 years. He and his wife, Catherine, joined the northern California member club, Golden Gaters and later served as club president. In June of 1993, he became the 9th President of WSGA where he served until Hank was committed to building the youth programs and improving the overall organization of the Association. He authorized the updating of the now old computer system and organized the women s golf program (formerly Aide to Women Golfers) to function like the other WSGA programs. This program is now known as Women in Golf (WIG). Hank s dedication and contribution to the growth of WSGA will never be forgotten. 22

23 The First Tee of South Los Angeles 2010 SCGA Scholarship Recipients SCGA Foundation Scholarship Program is designed to help youth continue their education in college or vocational school. This year $45,000 was distributed to 16 students for tuition, room and board, and educational supplies. The scholars are a tremendous group of individuals. The students were unique but are united by the common themes of a love for the game of golf and desire to work hard to earn their college degree. When interviewing with the Scholarship Committee, they arrived on time in business attire and some commuted up to four hours for the meeting. The committee was impressed with each candidate s ability to communicate their goals, the life lessons they ve learned from golf, how they have overcome obstacles, and the impact the scholarship would make in their lives. Reuben Torres $4,500 Torres graduated from the California Academy of Mathematics and Science and attends the University of California at Davis where he will redshirt on the golf team. Thanks to a class at Long Beach City College and further career exploration at his high school, he knows he wants to major in landscape architecture and utilize the land to build energy efficient buildings. As an avid golfer, Torres was able to qualify for The First Tee Walmart Open and played at Pebble Beach Golf Course. He played so well, his score was lower than his Championship Tour player partner. A multisport athlete, Torres also competed on the tennis, cross country, and basketball teams but he will pursue golf full-time in college. In addition, he logged over 500 hours in high school as a volunteer for his junior golf program and other local community organizations. Raven Clewis $2,500 Clewis was a senior at Cabrillo High School and is now attending Santa Monica College. She intends to transfer to UCLA after two years to purse her degree in marketing and music. Clewis was introduced to golf when she was ten years old by The First Tee of South Los Angeles and says that golf has helped keep me off of the streets and focus more on school. Clewis was also recently a junior report at the Northern Trust Open, where she kept a daily blog about the tournament. Her personal goal is to become a musician and major in business marketing to become a humanitarian so I can help millions around the world. William Chryar $2,500 Chryar, a member of The First Tee of South Los Angeles and graduated from Mira Costa High School. He attends Arizona State University with the intent of earning a degree in business or economics. He played in his first golf tournament at the age of seven when he became involved in Western States Golf Association. He is now a mentor for younger golfers at The First Tee of South Los Angeles and says, Mentoring the younger generation is the best way I can think of to give back to the community and all that it has given me. His ultimate dream would be to become a professional golfer and play on the PGA tour; however, until that happens, he will focus on his business degree so he can earn an honest living in society. Timothy Johnson $1,500 Johnson graduated from Washington Prep High School where he excelled in both golf and baseball. He s currently attending California State University at Dominguez Hills with an interest in video game design. An exemplary leader and mentor, Johnson s First Tee coach describes him as the best of what our program at The First Tee of South Los Angeles is about. Last year, Johnson won the Participant and Coaches Award for citizenship and practical application of the nine core values. In addition to volunteering at his junior golf program, Johnson carried a 3.6 GPA at Washington Prep, volunteers with Community Build, and is involved in a work-based learning program. 23
