1 GROUND S WORKER EMPLOYMENT RULES & DUTIES SAFETY COMES FIRST! All workers scan in at the beginning and end of each shift. Any absences from the workplace during the shift must also scan out and in. At the end of your shift return to the workshop allowing only enough time for your equipment cleanup and maintenance ~ the time prior to the end of shift is not for socializing. Exempting people needing extra time to perform their cleaning duties. Everyone must leave their work area and\or equipment in a neat, cleaned and ready for next use condition. This includes fueling your equipment before parking it for the day. Do not put away equipment that needs service or is not working properly let mechanic know immediately!!! At lunch, leave your work area allowing only enough time to return to the shop for the predetermined lunch break. Smoking on any equipment is not permitted. Most daily jobs will relate to course maintenance chores such as: Mowing of greens, tees, fairways, and rough areas Raking and maintenance of traps Setting of cups, moving tee blocks, general course housekeeping such as garbage collection, refilling of divot mix boxes, and servicing ball washers. Line trimming, leaf blowers, and other small lawn mowers and landscape tools. For most workers, their duties will not vary from these much, but others may be involved in: Flowerbed maintenance Tree work Course renovations Irrigation systems repairs and maintenance Applying fertilizers or other turf amendments On a seasonal basis turf grooming using verticutters, vacuums, sweepers, and aerifiers will be required. OPERATION OF EQUIPMENT Grounds workers shall not operate the grounds maintenance equipment without prior permission of the Superintendent or Equipment Manager. The Superintendent or other supervisors must be informed if prescription drug use might interfere with the safe operation of equipment. Alternate jobs may be temporarily assigned. Alcohol or recreational drug use will result in immediate termination. Circle checks must be performed on all motorized equipment Machines are started and then moved out of storage area at ½ throttle only When entering the building, reduce engine and travel speed to ½
2 Appropriate training for each piece of equipment must be undertaken before use and signed off on the training list. Several pieces of equipment have training videos available to help with orientation. Some equipment requires special certification before use. You may not operate the following without special training: the forklift the chainsaws or pole pruner the workman sprayer or backpack sprayer for the application of pesticides SAFTEY GLASSES Safety glasses are labelled and located to the right of the punch clock. Each employee may also keep a pair in their locker. Safety glasses must be worn anytime you are using equipment that can cause debris to become airborne, example: Weed Whipper, Blower, Cart path Edger. EAR PROTECTION Ear Protection is located in TWO spots, ear buds are located to the right of the punch clock and ear muffs are located out into the cold storage to the right (by the rain suits). Ear Protection must be worn when using ANY equipment that has an engine. SPILL KITS There are 3 spill kits located at the maintenance building. They are all in a clear container with a blue lid, labeled SPILL KIT. 1. In the shop to the left of the bay doors facing out towards the wash pad 2. Beside the chemical building by the wash pad on the right side 3. Beside the chemical building in cold storage on the right side If you notice a suspicious spill, gas, diesel, oil, etc cover with absorbent from spill kit immediately and then notify a manager. WASHING MACHINERY ALL machinery must be washed prior to being put away, this includes weed whippers, push mowers, shovels, rakes etc. Grass clippings can get stuck within the reels and must be dislodged. For equipment with cutting decks facing to the ground there is a special attachment at the wash pad to reach underneath the cutting decks. For reels on any triplexes used for cutting greens, tees, fairways etc with reels facing outward you must wash with the hose and then rotate the reel backwards to dislodge any grass clippings, repeat this process until you do not view any more grass clippings when you rotate the reel. There are long poles at the wash pad you will be taught in person how to properly execute this procedure. GAS AND DIESEL REQUIRMENTS All fuel usage must be recorded immediately after filling up. The record binder is located to the right of the punch clock. There are 3 fuel tanks, Gas, Diesel and Mixed Gas, be sure to double check your equipment before filling up. For mixed gas, it must be emptied back into 2
3 the mixed gas tank at the end of the day and the gas can returned to the table to the left of the rain jackets in cold storage. WORK HOURS Summer Hours Monday to Friday: Start time varying from 5:00 am-6:30 am to approximately 1:00-2:30 pm. These hours will be based on completion of the task for the day. Fridays will be heavy on cutting and if all is complete and no projects are going on it is possible some or all workers will leave around lunch. Saturday, Sunday and Holidays: Start time varying from 5:00 am-6:30 am to completion of team goal for the day (i.e. greens cut, course set up completed, holes changed, ALL traps raked). As a team goal Saturday s can be shorter if your team puts in a strong effort, or longer if your team does not work as hard. Shoulder Season Monday to Friday, hours vary according to season but are usually 6:30 am-7:30 am to 2:30 pm-3:30 pm Weekend hours will flux as required In heat of season when we have a larger amount of workers it may be implemented to create 3 teams so workers can work every third weekend. On occasion, work projects may have to be completed in one day, requiring additional hours of work. Scheduling will generally require workers to work every other weekend only or every third weekend. Long weekends will be assigned so each team works a long weekend and Labour Day long weekend is shared. Changes in these working hours may vary slightly depending on the course maintenance demands. All workers will now be required to work on a weekend crew. With the days on weekends being shorter there will be NO CHANGES without the Superintendents consent. In the event of rain all workers are expected to report for work. There are few occasions where rain washes our day out. We are no longer obligated to pay a minimum of 2 hours. University and High School students will be required to stay until Labour Day weekend and required to work ONE day during the Labour Day weekend. Changes in finishing dates will be reviewed on an individual basis. Sudden changes could influence future employment. WORK BREAKS Break will be assigned on an individual basis. Those with job assignments that have them returning to the shop can now take 1 break at the shop. Those who are on equipment that is constantly moving will take their breaks at their own leisure. Lunch will be taken back at the maintenance shop at 11:00 pm. Lunch break will be a 30 minute unpaid break. If you wish to skip all breaks and lunches you will be able to complete your shift a half hour earlier. This will need to be a signed agreement. 3
