4 IN & AROUND BY COL(RET) EUGENE CHEONG Hello Everyone! GM's Message Dear Members, I would like to take this opportunity to introduce COL (Ret) Richard Loong Tean Yuan as the Club s new General Manager. Richard has held various key positions over the years in the Singapore Armed Forces. He will be sharing more about himself in this issue. On the leisure front, the Club has received amazing responses for its recent events. These were the KL Interport Game, SCC & KRTU Friendly Game, National Day Golf and Family Carnival. Due to inclement weather, the Swimming Carnival, which was originally planned to take place on the same day as the Family Carnival, had to be cancelled. Nonetheless, we made the best of the situation and managed to gather a huge, happy crowd for the Family Carnival. Let s do a quick recap at some of these exciting events. KL Interport Game From 27 June 2018 to 1 July 2018, a total of 30 SCC members met up with reciprocal clubs Danau Golf Club, Nilai Spring Golf Club, Kelab Rahman Putra, KRTU and Tiara Melaka Golf Club in Kuala Lumpur. Members engaged one another in a light-hearted interclub match, after which everyone headed for dinner and prize presentation. Not only did the trip deepen the bonds between SCC and reciprocal clubs, but also encouraged a spirit of camaraderie among their members. We are very thankful for the support rendered by our sister clubs. SCC & KRTU Friendly Game On 7 July 2018, 44 SCC members, led by Club Captain Timothy and Ladies Captain Emily participated in a friendly game with 47 KRTU members on home ground. Participants played 23 flights in high spirits, followed by interaction over a savoury buffet spread and prize presentation. It was the perfect opportunity for members from both clubs to bond and reminisce over shared golfing experiences. The match was certainly one major golfing event that SCC members look forward to, every year. 02

5 IN & AROUND BY COL(RET) EUGENE CHEONG National Day Golf 2018 The Club held its National Day Golf on 18 August SCC's golf course was awash with our national colours of red and white as a total of 122 members gathered for the event. Participants immersed themselves in an exuberant game and challenging novelty events. Next came dinner, prize presentation and a surprise birthday celebration for those celebrating their birthdays in August (that s me!). As always, the event concluded on a delightful note as everyone headed home with fond memories. Staff Excellence Award (July to September 2018) I am pleased to announce the winners for the past quarter. They are Male Changing Room Attendant Vijay, Events & Marketing Officer Afiqah, Golfing Assistants Gai and Mahmood. Thank you for your compliments; they will certainly make our staff feel appreciated for their hard work. We are always keen to know how we can best meet your needs, so keep sending your compliments and feedback our way! Conclusion Members can look forward to our Annual General Meeting on 17 October 2018, which would be a good opportunity for the EXCO to understand, clarify and address members concerns. To welcome the festive season, the Club will be organising exciting year-end events in the coming months, so stay tuned for updates. Before I sign off, I would like to thank my fellow members for the support they had given me all these years. I deeply appreciate the camaraderie and happy moments we have shared through the years. Let us extend a warm welcome to COL (Ret) Richard Loong who will take over the reins as General Manager. I believe the Club will continue to excel under his leadership. 03

6 NEW GM Welcome our New General Manager COL (Ret) Richard Loong Hello! I am Richard Loong Tean Yuan, the incoming General Manager of Sembawang Country Club. I would like to say that it is an honour and privilege to be here and to serve you as the GM. It is also very heartening to meet many old friends and colleagues here at the Club. It feels like I ve not really retired from the SAF at all! I will make it a point now, as I walk around the place, to make new friends in this Club. I truly covet your support to make Sembawang Country Club Our Club one that provides enjoyment, relaxation and comradeship with our friends and families. Just to share a bit of my background, I started the military career as an Infantry Officer in 1990 and I was fortunate that the SAF offered the Academic Training Award to further my tertiary study in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Sheffield in the United Kingdom. I had been to many postings over the years in the Armed Forces from ground units, Brigade and Division Headquarters to Army and Joint Headquarters before going to India as Defence Adviser. I had returned from overseas posting as Defence Adviser in New Delhi after staying there for about 4 ½ yrs. If you are interested, I can always share the experience I had in India during our chats. A country that you will be fascinated with, amazed by its wonders and diversity. One of the key highlights of my career was the successful organisation of inaugural Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games (S2010 YOG) as Director Operations for the Opening & Closing Ceremonies of S2010 YOG. It was the most meaningful and memorable event for me when we lighted the Olympics Flame at the Marina Bay and putting Singapore in the world map. I am just a social golfer and I enjoy playing it as a leisure sport. I am married to my wife, Ee Huang and we have two lovely boys Marcus & Mervyn (19 & 16 years old). Thanks to EXCO, Eugene, his team and you, SCC has certainly grown to be a popular and well-liked golf club in Singapore. Talking to friends from outside, many have admired the transformation of SCC and said that it has become a wonderful golf course in Singapore. With this success, it s then given me a more challenging task to bring our Club to the next level. The Club has focused a lot of our efforts on service excellence and we will continue this great effort. In fact, we will constantly remind ourselves that we will always push for Service Excellence in our areas of work. Delivering happiness to our members and guests is of utmost importance for us! Last but not least, my desire is to continue to establish Our Club as The Club of Choice for our SAF Officers and Warrant Officers. Also, to ensure that Our Club continues to deliver a high level of enjoyment and satisfaction to our members and their families. With your continual support, I believe we will be able to achieve this together. 04

7 CAPTAIN'S COLUMN BY ME7 TIMOTHY YAP SOON HAW Friends, As some of you might have already heard, I would like to announce that I will be stepping down as Captain at the coming AGM. I have felt that one important aspect of my role as Captain is to pen these GC updates periodically to inform members about some of the thinking behind decisions that were taken regarding the golf course, especially since the golf course is the reason why most members have joined the club. So, as I write my last GC update, I hope you will indulge me as I will take a slightly different track and write a farewell letter of sorts. When I took over, I was a little intimidated by the challenge of filling the large shoes of the previous Club Captain who had overseen the development of a new golf course, and now, 2 years have passed in the blink of an eye. I still recall, I was barely into the job when my phone rang and the club manager informed me that someone had driven their buggy into the drain on the 2nd hole. As we obviously couldn t give you folks another new golf course, my team and I focused on improving other parts of your golfing experience. Over the last year, I believe that the most noticeable improvement has been the fleet of new buggies that I hope you are still enjoying. In addition, we transitioned smoothly from the old maintenance contractor to a new one without many golfers noticing. In fact, we have even gotten positive feedback that the course conditions have improved. There is also a new booking system that provides a fairer system of allocating tee times. There were also other small improvements such as the addition of new rakes and new pins with laser reflectors. Amongst the many friendly competitions and tournaments that we have had over the last 2 years, for me, one of the highlights was the SCC Open we had in featuring 450 golfers, and 2 hole-in-ones. It was one that we had to work extra hard to organise, and in the end, all of us felt that it was worth it. The other highlight for me was the Junior Golf Camp that we had at the end of last year. It was especially heartening to see the next generation enthusiastically picking up golf and wanting to get outdoors. I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to the golfing team at SCC, led capably by Christine and Prema, and of course my Green Committee. My special thanks to Lady Captain Emily, Vice Captain Jackson and Lady Vice Captain, Evelyn who have made my role as Captain literally a walk in the park. As the Captain, I have had the privilege of interacting with some of you either on the golf course or in the clubhouse. I have enjoyed these interactions and have learnt much from the diversity of perspectives that each of you bring to the club. It is what makes us call #sembawangcountryclub #ourhomeaboveall, and it is this kampung spirit that keeps us coming back. I see it in my GC team, and I see it on the course as I play with you guys. One thing I must add though is that I hope to see more of you repairing ball marks on the green. It then leaves me to introduce the next Captain. I shall leave his name a surprise, but, it suffices to say that he is not just an Expert on the golf course, but also in wining, dining, singing and dancing. I would encourage you to challenge him in any of these areas! With his characteristic cheerfulness and beaming smile, I m sure he will steer the club well through storms and rough seas. I wish him fair weather and a smooth journey. Hopefully, he doesn t add any additional new water hazards to the course :) Happy golfing! ME7 Timothy Yap Club Captain 05

I enjoyed very much the organised trip. The program and pace were right. Although I felt a bit tired already on the fifth day playing that last round of fun golf. Thank you very much Gai. 15 NEW BUGGY Sembawang Country Club s New ProCar Golf & Marshal Buggies from Agricultural Tractors Spares Pte Ltd (ATS) New Golfing & Marshal Buggies fully delivered to SCC in August 2018 The Club recently acquired a fleet of 102 ProCar Elite Golf Buggies in Metallic Electric Blue and Marshal Buggies in Red to replace the aging Yamaha Buggies which we had been using for the past six years. By the time you are reading this, you may have already had a few flights of golf on the new ProCar golf buggies. Supplied by Agricultural Tractors Spares Pte Ltd The ProCar buggies were supplied to us by Agricultural Tractors Spares Pte Ltd. They were selected to supply us with 96 golf buggies and 6 Marshal buggies after our recent tender earlier this year. Apart from golf buggies, they are also distributors of turf machinery and fertilizers to various golf clubs within Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia. New Features of the ProCar buggies Besides being value for money, the ProCar buggies come with several features that made it stand out from the other brands which were offered to the Club. These features include an AC motor which is more efficient than a DC motor, Regenerative Braking which slows the buggy down whenever the accelerator pedal is released, Electro Magnetic Braking System which automatically engages the parking brake when the buggy is stationary and High Strength Aluminium chassis to keep corrosion at bay. 13

16 NEW BUGGY Better Control The control that you get with the buggies while travelling on the many slopes in the golf course at SCC is fantastic. Release the accelerator pedal and you will notice that the buggy slows itself down. You need not think about manually engaging the parking brake as the buggy does that for you. Gone are the days that buggies will roll down the slopes on their own with the golfers running frantically after them. More Storage Space You would also have noticed that the new buggies come with more storage options. We now have the front stainless-steel baskets with top lid that secures any small personal items during the game. We also have a zippered nylon storage netting on the canopy for the same purpose. Great for keeping naughty primate fingers away. Charge your devices while you golf Have you ever had your mobile device going low on battery while in the middle of a game? Fret not as our new buggies are now equipped with a dual USB charger. Just remember to bring along your charging cable along for the flight. New Features for Quick Emergency Response Marshal Buggies The new Marshal Buggies are equipped with an LED Signage which can be programmed to flash important messages to golfers, a siren with Public Address System and a First Aid cum AED cabinet which can deliver these important life saving supplies to any golfer in an emergency. Enough said. It s now time to get up and book your next flight of golf with us and try out the new buggies! Keen to find out more about ProCar buggies? Visit their website at and 14

22 GOLF TIPS DON T BE AFRAID TO TRY A DIFFERENT PUTTING STYLE Copy Webb Simpson's willingness to experiment By Mathew Rudy Golf Digest Photos by Jamie Squire When the USGA banned anchored putting, one popular parlor game was to guess who would struggle the most. Before last week, Webb Simpson might have been at the top of the list. PONTE VEDRA BEACH, FL - MAY 13: Webb Simpson of the United States putts on the 18th green during the final round of THE PLAYERS Championship on the Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass on May 13, 2018 in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. The 2012 U.S. Open champion was lost on the greens, until a tip from fellow competitor Tim Clark last year helped paved the way for Simpson's dominating win at TPC Sawgrass. Clark suggested Simpson combine a longer-shafted putter braced up against his left forearm with a claw right-handed grip. Simpson won for the first time in four years, and did it by leading the field in strokes gained/ putting. On Friday, he made nine birdies and an eagle on his way to 63, basically putting the tournament away with two rounds to play. He never trailed by less than four on Sunday. The moral of the story? If you're struggling with your putting, be open to suggestions wherever they come from, says top Alabama teacher Tony Ruggiero. "The two reasons any player should look at changing styles would be having trouble starting the ball on line and hitting it solid," says Ruggiero, who teaches Lucas Glover and Tom Lovelady among other tour players. "When you switch to something like the arm lock or the claw, you're regaining control over your putter face, which helps you do both of those things." 20

23 GOLF TIPS How do you know if you should consider a change? Base it on real information, not feelings or emotions. "The tour average from five feet is 81 percent," says Ruggiero, who is based at the Country Club of Mobile and the Sheraton Bay Point Resort in Panama City Beach, Fla. "The average 15-handicapper only makes about 50 percent from there. Finding a grip or a stroke that will keep the face stable will immediately help you close some of that gap." Snap a simple chalk line on the putting green at five feet and practice with a variety of different grips. "Fiddle with your grip left hand low, claw, or whatever else feels good and see which version gets the ball starting most consistently on that chalk line," says Ruggiero. "It doesn't matter which grip or setup works the best or looks the best. It's what works best for you to get the ball rolling the way you want. That's where confidence in putting comes from. You have to have the feeling that you're going to hit it solid, where you aim." Staff Excellence Award (July September 2018) Congratulations to all of them, and well done! Thanks to all the fellow golfers for the wonderful company. Cheers! Lim King Loong, 6 July 2018 Just to say thank you for introducing the new buggies. It came with a pleasant shade of turquoise and and a nice tray upfront to store our paraphernalia which can be closed to keep out wandering hands. Also noted the charging points for handphones/ipads and laptops which will be most welcome if you bring along your charging cables. Good show SCC Alan Kwong, 19 July 2018 Your staff, John was a real revelation on a Monday morning at 8.15am. He was up and about cheerfully checking, speaking and motivating his fellow colleagues at the swimming pool in their cleaning and general maintenance work. Seeing them actively and energetically at their duties, makes my swim a real joy too. Keep it up! (must be the good environment and management of SCC!) Mao Sin Hua Joe, 8 August 2018 Mr A.Saran from golf course management really tried his best to enable us to play 18 even though there was a rain delay. Amazing work. Will come back just for that. Guest, 23 August 2018 She is an intelligent and sweet lady. Very conversant and a fast worker. She is helpful too and answered all our enquiries. She will go far in life. Wish her well. Congratulations to Mary and Sembawang Country Club. Guest, 27 August 2018 Mr Vijay is a very respectable washroom attendant. I find him very diligent and informative. Whatever you need, he would know where to find them. He is very helpful. Whenever you forget anything, he will give you a reminder. At times, the members or guests forgot to take away their belongings he would remind them and me inclusive. Very honest. Chew Kok Leong Rickie, 27 August 2018 I would like to thank the men's changing room staff Mr Kumar. Inadvertently, I left my wallet / pouch in the changing room this morning. He found it and made all effort to locate me and return it to me. Sembawang Country Club should be proud of staff like Mr Kumar for his honesty and diligence. Thank you. Guest, 7 September 2018 Hi Afiqah, Thank you for coordinating our workplan retreat yesterday. We were very satisfied with the facilities and were very well-fed by your caterer. Once again thank you very much for all your help to make our retreat smooth and comfortable one! Guest, 12 September 2018 Jamsari - I had left my wallet in the men's toilet and the employee found my belongings and return to me. I found my belongings were found to be safe.
