Editorial & Appointments The third quarter 2017 had been filled with exciting activities which included the Club Championship, National Day Golf, Members Night and a family carnival. SCC had given emphasis on training younger generation of golfers with our Junior golf camps. We hope to produce fine golf champions for the future. In this edition, we have invited Ralph Aeria, our SCC Men s Division Champion to give a review and share tips on how to play the back nine of SCC s golf course. Enjoy the rest of the year. 4 In & Around GM's Message Hello Everyone! Dear Members, Greetings! We are fast approaching the last quarter of 2017, and it has been a delightful journey for SCC so far. SCC will continue to enhance your positive experience at the Club and design programmes to keep you engaged. The Club has experienced a fulfilling and exciting year, having organised a myriad of activities with favourable response, thanks to your support. Let s look at some of these activities. Members Night On the social front, the Club had its Members Night on the evening of 13 July 2017, which saw a total of 166 members with their spouses. The Banquet Hall was filled with an atmosphere of genial camaraderie as members greeted one another, with strains of lighthearted classics flowing from a live jazz band in the background. New members received a Welcome Card for them to meet other members and collect their signatures in exchange for a door gift after the event. Everyone enjoyed a sumptuous buffet comprising tantalizing Indonesian delights such as: ayam penyet, assorted Indonesian kueh and mutton rendang. Next was the highlight everyone has been waiting for - the lucky draw, where attractive prizes were given away. The night ended on a pleasant note, with each member heading home with a door gift. National Day Golf A major golfing event, the National Day Golf game was held on 17 August The theme for this year was Gotong Royong (teamwork in Malay), an initiative that embodies communal cooperation and team spirit. Decked in red and white outfits, members rolled up their sleeves and worked enthusiastically on the course, fixing divots with sand and raking bunkers. Though the game had to stop due to rainy weather, the kampung spirit prevailed as we brainstormed to find answers to a group trivia game on Singapore s history. This was followed by a surprise birthday celebration for the August babies (I was one). The day ended with a lucky draw where winners walked away with special prizes. I believe the event served as a good reminder of our shared responsibility for our Club. It was indeed Gotong Royong in every sense of the word. Family Carnival Held on the afternoon of 2 September 2017, the carnival attracted 336 participants. Members and their children tried their hands at the various games and activity booths and all had a whale of a time. The young ones enjoyed playing on the bouncing castle slide and riding on the newly-introduced Junior Horse Carousel. The crowd had the opportunity to explore bazaar stalls selling various wares such as nutritious chocolates/nuts and caps, while enjoying complimentary snacks. One of the highlights was the Caricature booth, where children and their parents received comical caricatures of themselves. The carnival was a great success, and everyone had fun! Club Championship The SCC Club Championship was held over 3 days (16, 17, 23 September 2017). The final round on 23 September 2017 saw a total of 36 participants playing in 11 flights. Congratulations to Ralph Aeria, Emily Lee Beng Hua, Royston Low Kok Cheong and Linda Kang Ann Sian for clinching the championship titles 02

In & Around for Men s, Ladies, Intermediate and Senior divisions respectively! The event concluded on a celebratory note as the champions received their awards at the prize-giving ceremony and everyone enjoyed a tasty buffet dinner. Jackpot Machines To curb problem gambling, MHA recently introduced restrictions on the operation of Jackpot machines in Clubs, effective September The Club would like to emphasise the following: 1) Members are not allowed to bring guests to the Jackpot Room 2) Persons below the age of 21 years are not allowed in the Jackpot Room For more information on the above regulations, do approach our Jackpot staff. Long Service Award In recognition of contributions by long-serving staff, the Club gave out Long Service Awards on our annual staff day (11 September 2017) to the following staff: 5 Years of Service: Chan Keng Kiew, Lee Soo Gek and Toh Sway Boon (Operations) Toh Mei Lian (Events and Marketing) Jalani bin Jumaat and Rezeanty binte Ramzan (Golfing) 15 Years of Service: Jamsari Bin Mohd Juffri and Othman bin Ahmad (Operations) 25 Years of Service: Yeo Ah Soo (Operations) 35 Years of Service: A Saran (Golfing) Well done, all! Your contributions are invaluable. Staff Excellence Award (July to September 2017) I am pleased to announce the winners for the quarter of July to September 2017: Vijay (Operations Department), Rani (Golfing Department), and two groups comprising Rez and Gai (Golfing), and James, Sawal and Taha (Operations). Congratulations to all of them! Thank you for your nominations, compliments and feedback. We are greatly encouraged by your support and will keep up our service standards to make your visit a delight. Do keep your feedback/ comments coming! Conclusion In closing, more exciting initiatives will be coming your way in the last quarter, so stay tuned. As always, we welcome any comments you may have. See you around! 03

Captain s Column By ME7 Timothy Yap Soon Haw Fellow Sembawang Golfers, It has been one year since the last AGM. I hope you have been satisfied with the condition of our golf course as that has been the priority for me and the Green Committee over the past year. Of course, things could always be better, so please continue to give us your views. On the topic of feedback, I would like to share that I had my first feedback game in September. I am encouraged to note that the three members had generally good things to say about the course. Be assured, however, that we will not rest on our laurels and will be looking into the suggestions that they had. Oh, and for those who want to know the results of that match, well...someone in the group (and it wasn t me) got a free lunch that day. Don t worry, he will also be getting a free handicap review as well! Another area I was keen to focus on was the Junior Golf program. As many of us can attest to, starting young gives you a better swing, because your muscles are more supple and joints more flexible. More importantly, I hope that we can get as many of the younger generation as possible interested in golf, experiencing the outdoors and getting some sun. We re happy to report progress in this area, with excellent participation for the Junior Golf camps that we ran earlier this year. Currently we have more than 40 kids in training. Given the right support, they can and will progress on to be better golfers. So we will be looking into more ways to encourage our junior golfers, and perhaps one day, they can even represent our club. Another thing that we will seek to improve is the number of members with a Handicap Index, which is necessary for playing on weekend mornings and in competitions. One of the common grouses about getting a Handicap Index is the need to submit scorecards for multiple rounds before they can be scheduled for the test. We ll be looking at organising a Rabbit s Cup, so that PC holders can play with more experienced members in a flight and hopefully obtain a HI faster. Please let us know if you are interested to participate! See you at the AGM ME7 Timothy Yap Club Captain 04

Greens Talk Hole-by-Hole (My Views & Pointers) - Continued By Ralph Aeria In the previous issue, Ralph Aeria walked us through the Front Nine with insights on the challenges at each one and how they could be manoeuvred for a power shot. In this issue, Ralph takes on the Back Nine and shares more tips. The Back Nines My look at the back nine of the Sembawang golf course will be from the Blue tees. Those of you who will be playing from the white or black rate boxes will have to make the necessary club selection to cater for the difference in length. Let's get started! HOLE 10 The 10th is par 4 dog leg left with a water hazard to the left and out of bounds to the right and over the cart path straight ahead. The green is guarded with bunkers to the left, and is two-tiered. The front of the green has an upward gradient and after the tier in the middle, it slopes away from the player. Missing to the right on your approach is ok. The right slopes towards the green. This green has a few undulations. Read them well and be cautious of the speed depending on which side you are putting from. Meters Par 4 Pointers - there are two ways in which this hole can be played: The safe route will be playing straight ahead to leave yourself anywhere from 110 metres to 160 metres for a second shot. The other route will be to cut the dogleg. This will require a carry of about 210 metres. This route will leave the successful ones with anything from 100 metres and less for a second shot. HOLE 11 From the tee, you look downhill to a dogleg left par 4. There are 2 bunkers to the left and right of the fairway around 210 metres from the tee. There is a water hazard on the left that will catch wayward tee shots that go too far left. The green breaks predominantly right to left (looking from the fairway). Only bunkers are behind the green and it's a two-tiered green. Meters Par 4 Pointers: The approach to the green may be over the water hazard, depending on pin location and length of the tee shot. The ideal tee shot should be just left of centre, hugging the left bunker. Longer hitters may consider hitting over the left bunker as this will leave an approach of around 110 metres or less for the second shot. This hole plays slightly downhill for your second shot so you may need to hit a half club to a club less. Pins located on the lower tier and front portion of the green are more accessible. Back right pin location requires the second shot to carry the tier. This green is quite receptive to approach shots. Pins located on the back left are a bit trickier to get to. The approach will need to be high and it is to a narrow landing area. 12

Greens Talk HOLE 12 Standing on the tee, you will see a huge water hazard and a fairway bunker on the right side. The green is guarded by a bunker short and right of the tee. Green slopes from back to front. Meters Par 4 Pointers: Shorter hitters may want to consider playing to the right and short of the fairway bunker - this will leave an approach of anything inside 140 metres. Longer hitters can play to the left of the bunker - this will leave an approach of about 110 metres or less. If it is a front pin placement, aim to be below the pin. Anything left, right or long of a front pin will make for a very tricky quick putt. If it's a front pin position, any approach to the left, right or past the pin will lead to a tricky putt. It is best to leave approach below the hole. If it is a back pin position, you may need half a club to a club more for the approach. HOLE 13 Another tee that looks down to the fairway, this is a risk or reward hole. Long hitters will benefit on this hole. It's a dogleg left hole with water all down the left side, and a narrow fairway that opens up from 100 metres in to the green. Green is guarded by a deep bunker. An undulating green - most of it slopes from back to front. Meters Par 4 Pointers: Aim to avoid the bunker on your approach. If the pin placement is on the front left of the green, it is recommended to lay up the tee shot at around 100 metres position on the left side of the fairway. This will facilitate an approach along the length of the green. Since the front portion of the green is narrow and like a bowl, approach shots along the narrow part will tend to roll off the green. Pin placements mid, back or front of right side will pose less of a problem with approach as there is more green to work with. Ideally, approach shots should be right of the pin. 13

Greens Talk HOLE 14 A long par 4 that requires a fairly long tee shot. A slightly elevated fairway that is tree-lined to the right. It is Out of Bounds to the right of the trees. Tee shots slightly right or left of the centre of the fairway will tend to kiss toward the middle. Too far left of the tee and your ball may end in the wild grass areas left of the fairway. The green is guarded by a large bunker in front. The front of the green slopes towards the middle. Meters Par 4 Pointers: Ideal tee shots leave an approach of anything from 200 to 120 metres in to the green. It is difficult to stop the ball if your approach is with a low lofted club or fairway wood. If you are left with long approach and unsure if can carry the front bunker, it is recommended to either play short of the bunker or hit to the left/right of the bunker. HOLE 15 A short par 3 that that requires good club selection, depending on the pin s location. Tee is slightly elevated and the green guarded by a deep bunker to the left side. Bunker comes into play when pin is located anywhere in the middle to left side of the green. This is a tricky green to read, as it tends to beak more than one sees, especially the back left and middle pin positions. Meters Par 3 Pointers: A front to the right requires a precise tee shot, so consider a slick down putt. For a front right position, try not to be short of the green. If short, the ball tends to run down the slope and you will be left with a chip back up the hill. HOLE 16 A long par 5 with trees lining the left of the fairway and Out of Bounds right of the trees. Green is tiered to the back; it's a large green. To the right of the green, there is a water hazard that is not visible from the fairway. Meters Par 5 Pointers: The ideal tee shot should be to the left of centre of the fairway; too far left and your second shot could be blocked by trees. A second shot should aim to place slightly right of the centre of the fairway. There is a bunker located about 150 metres from the green, reachable for the longer hitters. A second shot placed anywhere from 150 to 110 metres from the green will be ideal. Third shot will be laid over a water hazard that cuts across the fairway and to the left. Don't go long right or you may end up in the water hazard. 14

Greens Talk HOLE 17 A reasonable distance par 5 with dogleg left from 110 metres in to the green. The hole plays uphill off the tee. Bunker is located in the middle of the fairway around 180 to 200M off the tee. Green is protected by bunkers to the left and one bunker short right of the green. There is a bunker to the back right of the green. Meters Par 5 Pointers: Note that second shots that stray to the right may end up in the wild grass areas to the right of the cart path. Approach shots to pin position at the back should be to the left side of the green. Anything too far right tends to end up in the "bowl" on the right. If putting to a back right pin, allow for more breaks from left to right. Too far left off the tee, and the second shot could be blocked by a line of trees and wild grass areas front of the trees. Aim to play the second shot to the right of the left slope; too far right and you may end up in the wild grass areas. The third shot is downhill towards the green. Approach shots need to be played to the correct spot on the green. Failing to do so may leave you with a difficult putt. For front left of green, it is ideal to play short and right of pin. For back left placement, try to stay left on your approach. Anything too far right will tend to feed away from the hole into the bowl at the right of the pin. For back right pins, aim to approach the pin as the ball tends to break right. HOLE 18 This is Sembawang s signature hole; a slightly downhill longish par 3. It is guarded by a bunker short left of the green and water all down the right side. The green tends to break from left to right from the middle to the left portion of the green, and right to left from the middle to the right portion of the green. Meters Par 3 Front and middle pin positions are fairly easy to gauge. Aim to play the tee shot to the left of the green, as the slope to the left will help kick the ball towards the green if you are too far left. A back right placement is the most difficult on this green. Longer hitters can go direct to the back right pin. For the shorter hitter, it's recommended to play to the middle of the green. From the middle to back right of the green, do a break a little to the right. However if you are short right on the green, a slope on of the right of the green will move the ball left on your putt. 15

Golf Tips By Butch Harmon Golf Digest Photos by Dom Furore Train With Alignment Rods For Better Accuracy My dad, Claude Harmon, had a great line for his students about aim: "If you aim at nothing, you're always going to hit it." To get a handle on where your shots are going, focus on starting direction. Here's a drill I've been using a lot lately with my players. Take three alignment poles and set one parallel to your target line between your feet and the ball. Stick the other two in the ground five to 10 yards in front of you and two to three feet apart, creating a window on your target line. You can adjust the gap based on how easy it is for you to hit a field goal. This is a great drill for monitoring your setup, which will help if you're spraying the ball. Using a 7-iron, step in and set the bottom of the club perpendicular to the pole at your feet that's a square face. Then set your body lines (feet, knees, hips, shoulders) parallel to the pole. Now you're set up to split the uprights. Hit some balls going through this routine. Remember to use your normal swing; don't try to steer the ball through the poles with your hands. Drive your whole body through, and see how you do. 16

Golf Tips LEARN TO PLAY DRAWS AND FADES For players who want to work the ball left or right, stick one alignment pole on your target line five to 10 yards out. To fade it, set the clubface square to the pole, but align your body to the left (below), then swing along your body line. The ball should start left of the pole and then curve toward the target (below). For a draw, square the face, set your body closed and start the ball right. 30 Membership News A WARM WELCOME TO OUR NEW MEMBERS! Bouquets: Your Club has one very good and efficient course marshal. He is Mr Abdul Rahman, who has served us on numerous occasions. He gives very clear and proper instructions. Helpful and polite. I find him better than most others in your Club or other Clubs. - Guest, 6 July 2017 Kudos to Mr Kumar, Changing Room Attendant on duty on 8/7/17 for keeping my water bottle that I left in the changing room after game. Much appreciated. - Ow Kong Chung, 15 July 2017 JULY 2017 MA JIAHONG JOANNE QUEK YI MEI TAN ZHENG XIONG DARREN SEPTEMBER 2017 ONG KOK CHENG JONATHAN OW NG KAI LIN TAN SHENGYANG SCC is my second home, where I go around mostly unaware of the surroundings, except on golf matters, until some guests remarked positively on the splendid upkeep of our 7 years old clubhouse. It looks new! Your operations personnel are truly an invaluable bunch, quietly going about their work. The whole place is brightly painted, chairs in the Golf Terrace varnished, banners for National Day posted, just to name a few. They are e.g. carpenters, electricians, artists, painters, carpet-layers, plumbers, brick-layers, cleaners, all rolled into one. With the necessary tools, materials and moral support, the jobs are accomplished as good as any contractor. The savings must be phenomenal. Fantastic! This is perhaps one of the reasons SCC's monthly subscription is amongst the lowest around. Members should therefore say "Hi" when meeting them. - Kevin Ho, 19 July 2017 It was as usual a very well-organised golf tour by SCC led by Gai and her two assistants. The flight at each course goes smooth and timely without much delay to tee-off. I greatly enjoy the golf tour and wish to thank Ms Gai and two young assistants. Suggest to have at least 5 days' golf tour next year just like last year. Thanks SCC. - Goh Siang Kok Michael, 30 July 2017 I am glad to have been served by Ms Zura, who is very courteous, helpful and resourceful. She also handles our tickets with good speed and accuracy. I see she is happy at her work, and always gives us a kind and respectful smile. Congratulations to SCC!!! - Guest, 5 August 2017 Dear Eugene and Friends at SCC, thank you for helping us organise a great golf and dinner event last Thursday. Both Rez and Mei Lian were most helpful in many ways from the meetings to the very day of the event. Rani was also most patient to help me amend the golf flights the day before the event over the phone. Our event was successful and credit goes to the fine team at SCC that gave us very good support. Thank you. - Lim Chin, 4 September 2017 On 16 Sep 17 at about 8.10am, I had forgotten to retrieve my wallet that was placed on the shelf in the toilet. Mr Vijay (Changing Room Attendant) managed to retrieve my wallet. He sought me out and returned my wallet. His honest act must be commended and I am pleased that SCC has such an honest staff. Thank you. - Han Wee Kwang, 16 September 2017 Very happy with the pool attendants services; the friendly aunties and John. They are very helpful and easy going persons, who make swimming here very enjoyable. - Chia Neng, 22 September 2017 TAN ZHIPENG DARYL 28 28
