NEW YEAR S MESSAGE FROM YOUR CHAIRMAN May I start by wishing you all a very happy and successful Secondly, I would like to thank Lindsay Sparrow, who retired from the committee, and who has been responsible for the newsletter for the past few years and thank Trilby Herriott for taking on the task from now on. We also welcome Christine Smyth onto our committee. Huge congratulations to all our South East trophy winners and our national winners too. This year our BAM was held at Tilgate Golf Club at Crawley. It was a great success and we have already booked 3 rd December 2016 at the same venue for this year. We once again need to thank Leo for all her hard work in organising the prizes and rosette results. It is an enormous amount of work which has to be done quickly at the end of the season so the rosettes can be ordered. Please remember that to be eligible for the group s rosettes and prizes you need to have helped at one national and one training ride/day in our area and send your SE trophy card to Leo by 14 th October. We need your help to run our rides or they will not happen. It takes at least twenty helpers, often more, to run every ride. Remember that this year if you or your horse is FEI registered (possibly nationally to be announced shortly) you cannot compete within 5 days of a 40km or less ride. 12 days of 40km to 80km ride, 19 days of 81km to 120km ride, 26 days of 121km to 140krides and 33 days of anything above 140km. If your horse fails for lameness you cannot compete for fourteen days plus the rest period and if it has two consecutive fails for lameness you cannot compete for 21 days plus the rest period. 4

This season we have a new competition called the Weald Trophy for members and non-members taking part in three pleasure rides between 8kph and 9kph with a final championship ride at Devils Dyke on the 25 th September, where the new lovely trophy will be awarded. You will find details elsewhere in this newsletter. A big thank you to Sue Cooper who is sponsoring rosettes for any horse who completes seven or more rides of 32km to 160km in a season without any fails. This is in commemoration of her pony, Bethan, who was retired at the end of 2015 without a fail on her card ever!! Many, many congratulations as this is what we all would like to achieve. We start the season with Tilford national ride on the 6 th March which is already full, followed by Graffham National ride a fortnight later and then South Downs national ride on the 10 th April. There is a three day weekend on the Isle of Wight 22nd to 24 th April which is excellent training for anyone thinking of going abroad and having a short ferry trip. On the May Day Bank Holiday we have our first training ride at Coombes. We are running an unmounted training day on Sunday February 28 th featuring mechanical horses, 2016 goal setting and nutrition talk there are more details on page 41 of this newsletter The training weekend at Hornshill has been changed this year to the last May bank holiday weekend 28 th and 29 th May which will allow for more members to participate as they will be able to corrall their horses. That just leaves me to wish you all a great season s riding, crewing and competing. Rosemary 5

ENDURANCE GB SOUTH EAST GROUP MINUTES OF BRANCH ANNUAL MEETING Held on Saturday 5 th December 2015 At Tilgate Golf Club, Titmus Drive, Crawley, West Sussex, RH10 5PQ COMMITTEE MEMBERS PRESENT: Rosemary Attfield (Chair), Peter Davenport, Leo Davenport, Jane Cook, Mandy Yarnold, Kate Curry, Lindsay Sparrow, Trilby Herriott. 53 members were present. 1. APOLOGIES Apologies were received from Sally Clay and Caroline Long. 2. MINUTES OF LAST MEETING (from 6 th December 2014) The minutes were unanimously agreed for accuracy and signed. Proposed by Christine Smyth, seconded by Coralie Holman. 3. MATTERS ARISING None 4. CHAIRMAN S REPORT Rosemary Attfield welcomed everyone to the meeting and to the new venue, explaining that we had tried this year to find a venue closer to the centre of the area. She then gave an overview of the programme of rides and training run by the South East Group during the 2015 season; this comprised nine national rides, seven training rides and a training weekend. Rosemary proposed a vote of thanks to all our ride organisers and their helpers, and reminded members that helpers are always needed for all events, and that perhaps people should consider working alongside an experienced helper to learn the different jobs. Lindsay Sparrow has now stepped down from the SEG Committee. She was given a vote of thanks and presented with a 6

gift in recognition of the time and effort she has devoted to the group, especially in producing the newsletter so ably over the past few years. Rosemary then reviewed the successes of the SEG teams. The SEG team was fourth in the Inter-regional competition held at Cranwich, and all competitors were warmly congratulated on this achievement. The SEG sent two teams to compete at Rufus. In 2016 we are launching a new championship called the Weald Trophy, which will be open to both members and non-members alike. Rules will be published on the website and newsletter, with the final being held at Devil s Dyke in September. Looking to the future, the 2016 SEG season currently shows eight national rides and six training rides planned. Rosemary asked members to let committee members know if they had ideas for new events, whether mounted or unmounted. There had been so many lovely nominations for the crew award this year that they were put on the tables for all to read. Rosemary gave an overview of the National AGM, explaining that all the Board Members had stood down, to allow a new, reduced Board to be elected; a total of 10 Directors instead of the old Board of 15. Chairman John Hudson gave special mention to some of the Group s committee members and Jane Cook was mentioned for the South East Group for all her hard work as not only the Group s Treasurer but a multi ride organiser! There has been no further movement on the new hat standards so EGB will continue to allow the use of BSEN1384 stamped hats in Information on hat standards will be published on the main EGB website shortly and we are advised to check them before purchasing a new hat. 7

Finally, Rosemary wished everyone a Happy Christmas and a very successful endurance season in TREASURER S REPORT - Jane Cook presented the annual accounts to the meeting (see accounts attached) There were no questions from the floor, and the accounts were unanimously accepted as being correct. Proposed by Christine Smyth and seconded by Coralie Holman. 6. ELECTION OF THE COMMITTEE FOR 2016 Rosemary Attfield, Leo Davenport and Jane Cook retired by rotation and were unanimously voted back onto the committee. Lindsay Sparrow has stood down from the committee. Christine Smyth was elected (proposed by Trilby Herriott and seconded by Lindsay Sparrow). The SEG Committee now consists of 9 members. 7. RIDE SCHEDULE 2016 Provisional dates were presented to the meeting. There will be no Berkshire Downs ride in 2016 as the venue has been sold. Ride the Wight is back on the schedule. Birling Gap (was Friston Forest) will become a national ride. 8. REPORT FROM NATIONAL AGM Notes from the AGM were circulated. 9. TRAINING At the beginning of March 2015 there was a training weekend at Hornshill run by Rosemary, with Mandy Yarnold doing the catering, which was well attended. The weekend was jam packed with lessons in the school, a lesson on a medicine ball to strengthen cores, a practise at trotting horses up for the vet, organising and running a vet gate, and a lesson on lunging. A nutrionalist from Baileys gave a talk on electrolytes and feeding. On Sunday all this was put into practice on a training ride. 8

Training in 2016 can be weekends or single training days, whichever members would like. Please just let the committee know what you would like to see on the schedule. 10. A.O.B. - None 11. DATE OF NEXT MEETING The AGM next year will take place on Saturday 3 rd December 2016 Dinner was followed by a talk given by Pam James, titled Memories of the Golden Horseshoe Ride, and the presentation of the South East Group Awards Rosettes generously sponsored this year by: Cliffe Equine HCD Research Ltd On The Hoof Distance Training Mandy Yarnold Louise Palmer Jane Cook Sylvia Herriott Christine Smyth Cindy Russell Maggie Pattinson Kate Curry Susan Hawes Sally Toye Ann Gresham 9

A NEW YEAR AND A NEW EDITOR Firstly, I would like to congratulate Lindsay Sparrow on doing such a fantastic job with the newsletter over the past years. It has been informative, funny, diverse and a thumping good read she is going to be an exceedingly hard act to follow! One thing I shall miss, now that I am compiling it all myself, is the newsletter dropping through my letterbox and settling down with a cup of tea to read it avidly from cover to cover. For the next two years there will be no surprises! I will have read it at least five times, typed it, re-typed it, no doubt sworn roundly on a number of occasions and burnt the midnight oil sweating over copy deadlines. Don t get me wrong, I am hugely looking forward to doing it, albeit a tad daunted at having to fill 60 odd pages four times a year with stuff that other people will want to read. In this modern age of instant information via interwebland, on facebook etc the printed word gets a little bit left behind. In response to that, the newsletter will become more slanted to an informative and hopefully entertaining quarterly periodical rather than 64 pages of yesterday s news arriving through your letter box. I really hope you like this rookie s first effort. I take this opportunity to ask all South East members to please submit anything they feel would interest or entertain the newsletter readers whether its about your own experiences or something interesting that could be of use to your fellow endurance riders. Please me on triblet@yahoo.com Thank you. Trilby Herriott 10

WELCOME TO YOUR NEW COMMITTEE MEMBER CHRISTINE SMYTH A pony ride on a blustery Cornish beach at the age of three awoke my life-long passion for ponies. The single item birthday and Christmas lists from then on were met by my father with, She ll ride for 6 months at most and that will be it! Well, aged eight I had my first half-hour lesson and fifty years later I m still in the saddle! I mucked out, groomed (well, the bits I could reach!) and cleaned tack at the local riding school for two years, until one day I was allowed to ride a pony bareback the half mile from the field to the yard I thought I d died and gone to heaven. After that I gravitated to being a supply jockey for Donkey Derbies SO exciting! Wearing silks and trying to get bucking donkeys to gallop was hilarious. Teaching toddlers to ride the smallest ponies and seeing their joy match mine was another formative step. I rode for the one legged ex-shepherd (yes, you did read that correctly) who owned the riding school for twenty five years; he was a terrific horseman, mentor and friend always telling me that the horse I d just begun to master was too quiet for me and putting me on a more challenging ride. It was character building if bruising!! At sixteen I spent my third summer at a sixty acre riding centre in Wiltshire, this time as a working pupil aiming for my BHSAI. However, I d just met Vincent and, having decided that we would be married, 12

came back to Surrey to continue at a riding centre on the edge of Richmond Park. I was married, just qualified as a teacher and aged 21 when I bought my beloved Sovereign, a four year old, bright chestnut TB x Connemara who taught me to jump things that were taller than me. We won loads, both affiliated and unaffiliated, hunted and then, thanks to Maggie Parker, tasted endurance; he was still successfully completing 42k rides when he was twenty eight years old. Fortunately I had decided to buy another four year old before I hit 50 and had just acquired Tully before Sovereign was put down aged 30. Tully, my snorting dun, has completed 2,300 competitive km and raced 80km for the SE Team, gone hunting and done a bit of show jumping. My little liver chestnut Wee Jez followed (yes, the LAST 4 year old before I hit 60!!) and has so far done a bit of dressage and cross country, twenty two endurance rides, representing the South East three times and last season dabbling in our first FEI 80k 1 Star. I have met such great people doing endurance, made some very special friends and shared more fun, encouragement and camaraderie than in any other equestrian discipline. I hope to be able to introduce others to the joys of our sport and offer the same encouragement and help that I have enjoyed. Christine 13

A massive task, brilliantly done each year. Thank you Leo NICK PEARSHOUSE by Caroline Johnson - I met my crew a year and a half ago. He was frightened of horses to the point that when he encountered a very friendly pony in a field who just wanted to say hello, he made a quick exit from the field. He then met Hartley and my new horse Bambi. He spent the next few months becoming very attached to Bambi and Bambi would do anything for Nick. He still wasn t brave enough to enter Hartley s stable. The big question arose at the beginning of the season: Will you crew for me? I had arranged to take Hartley to Tilford and ride with Becka and Zeus. Nick had never towed a horse trailer, he wasn t overly brave with Hartley, and certainly had never crewed before. 22

NICK PEARSHOUSE S nomination continued: So it was agreed that Madeleine would train him on course. A week before the ride, I asked Can you share the crewing with Becka s crew and crew for Zeus too? OK, so I dropped him in the deep end. He did a fantastic job. He never missed a crew stop for the rest of the season and remembered directions to some stops like turn left at the house with funny colour bricks, or pub names were also well remembered. Nick also had a few experiences with my truck, from covering it in mud on the outside, to covering the inside in sugar beet as he got lost on an off road 4x4 track. Nick met lots of other friendly crews, picking up hints and tips along the way. He then crewed for myself and Madeleine and took Bambi in to vetting doing a really good job. Sadly I lost Bambi unexpectedly due to colic. Nick came with me to Bell Equine and for both of us it was a long and emotional night. We carried on for the rest of the season with Nick becoming more confident with Hartley, feeding him, going in his stable, and even putting his travel boots on with Hartley kicking at the same time. My stress head was rubbish at final vettings which affected Hartley s heart rate, so Nick took him in for the rest of the season (the last 6 rides), no eliminations for high pulse and 4 gradings were the result. After sleeping in a tent in the freezing cold at Royalties, with me adding extra crew stops at short notice, he got me and Hartley through 64k over 2 days with a Grade 1 and a Grade 2. It has taken Hartley 7 years to get a Grade 1! A superstar crew definitely worth crew of the year. Caroline Johnson THE CREW AWARD NOMINATIONS Unfortunately they couldn t all win the trophy but are all very deserving, highly valued and hugely appreciated! JOHN BEDFORD, ELOUISE BEDFORD, JOY FILTNESS, PATRICK McROW It s simple my crew deserve to win the Best Crew Award, because they are the BEST! Sally-Anne Filtness EVA BORBAS 23

I would like to nominate my crew, Eva Borbas, for the crew award. She is my rock. Without her help I could not compete. She does everything, packing the car and trailer, all the driving, grooming, tacking up, trot ups, plus crewing us on the ride, and so much more that as a para rider I could not do on my own. Although from a horsey background, Eva had no experience of endurance beforehand, but now is a competent crew who also helps me crew other people when we are free. - Rebecca Northover I would like to nominate Eva, Becca Northover s crew. She is amazing. Not only does she crew for Becca, she also helps out others that ride with Becs. Nothing seems to phase her. Eva is great. She has to sort out the horse in the morning and post ride, organise the medication and ensure she has it on time to keep Bec going, whilst still having everything in place for the crewing role. I rode with Becs a couple of times this year and it is not easy for either of them to do this. It would be nice for Eva to have recognition for her work and dedication. PETER RALPH I wish to nominate my husband Peter Ralph for the crew award this year. This will be the 5 th year running that he has crewed for me and the 3 rd for my riding buddy Leonie Wheeler. Peter has been to every ride with us providing his care and support at each one. This is not just providing sloshes and water for the horses but also food and drink for us at each crew point and after the ride. Apart from the inevitable running about to get us to and from the secretary and vettings with the minimum of fuss, Peter also drives us to and from the rides. This can be a feat in itself as this usually involves travelling along what must be the most un-trailer friendly roads of East Sussex, especially the Snail Trail A21! During the past 5 years he has also maintained our Shogun tow car and the trailer he has a much diminished bank balance to reflect this! This award will be my way of saying thank you for always being there for me. I am so lucky to see that cheery face as I ride to the next crew point. Sandra Ralph 24

JAMES DICKINSON Unfortunately, although this season got off to a good start for James, horses will be horses and it all went a bit downhill. But never once did he complain or say I wish I was riding. No, instead my super crew has followed me up and down this country, crewing me on three very different horses in some very different competitions over a distance of 1,434 kilometres. Those of you that know me will know that I get very nervous before and during any competitions. This was affecting my horses at the vetting and this added with my lack of ability to trot up after 120km put me in a big dilemma when the dreaded 160km word was brought up! But James told me not to worry as he would trot Layla for me. Well, eight months later and I have not been to one vetting this season see, I told you he was super crew! No task is too big or too small for James. Most of the time you don t even have to ask and he s already done what I was going to ask him to do. I m forever being told to sit down, shut up and eat in vet gates, and I tell you that at vet gate 5 of a 160km you become very grateful for this! James also always thinks outside the box and makes the impossible possible. Take the Red Dragon 2 day 160km for instance: after day 1 I had awful blisters on my feet and walking was interesting, but I really wanted to go and check on Layla. So James says, no problem, hop in, as he has found a wheelbarrow to push me down to the stables in! Talking of Red Dragon, James decided that he would drive me down on Friday morning after I had finished college, so that Layla could travel down on Thursday and recover from the journey. Then he drove me back on Sunday night so that I could be back in college on Monday morning. See, not only does he think of me, he thinks of my horses, and also of keeping my parents and college happy!! I really want him to know how grateful I am for everything he has done for me this season because without him 1km wouldn t have been possible, let alone 1,434km, and this award would go some way to showing him this. Katie Bedwin 25

CAROLINE SUTHERLAND, JENNY NEWMAN & STEPH ALLUM I would like to nominate these three people, but not because they have earned it in the traditional sense of this award. Moreover, they have earned it behind the scenes of the endurance competitive season. They have earned it for their unfailing support, encouragement, wisdom and friendship over the time that I have had my horse, Jet. He has not always been easy but we would not be where we are today without them. This summer we entered our first rides with a vet gate, successfully completing both with the help of Jenny and Caroline as our crew. But also this summer I broke my leg, and all three stepped up, looking after Jet for me, visiting me in hospital and afterwards, and generally being absolutely brilliant! Thank you very much for everything! Lindsay Sparrow JEAN WRIGHT I would like to nominate Jean Wright for the crew award. She follows us around all the rides. She isn t really horsey but she looks after us, bears with us whilst we niggle at each other and is just generally a firm part of the Holman Endurance team who we d be lost without. This is the third year that Mum has done this and I would just sincerely like to be able to show my appreciation of what she does for us and the ponies. Coralie & Ollie Holman MICHAEL & PHILIPPA JUPP I would like to nominate Michael & Philippa Jupp for the best crew ever awards. Gail Jupp 26

KATE S FAVOURITE CHRISTMAS PRESENT My favourite Christmas present this year was this super collapsible mounting block. It stands 40cm (16") high, which is bigger than any other mounting block I have been able to easily transport, and as you can see it folds down completely flat for easy storage in the trailer. Younger readers may not appreciate the value of such a present, but I am sure all those over a 'certain age' will be rushing out to buy one of these tomorrow! At home I used to mount my horse from two milk crates stacked on top of each other, until my foot went through the top one and I found myself with one foot in a stirrup and the other wearing a milk crate - my advice is don't try this at home... ROSEMARY S FAVOURITE CHRISTMAS PRESENT The Christmas present I really liked was my Torq gel mittens. You can fully use your fingers in these fingerless mitts and with the gel in the palm of your hand you never appear to get cold hands or fingers. They have a handy loop on each glove to aid removal stopping them turning inside out as you pull them off plus the bright orange makes them much easier to find when you ve dropped one on a dull winter day. 28

CARDINAL PANACHE ONE VERY SPECIAL LITTLE HORSE On 13 th September 2015 Julia Harman piloted Cardinal Panache (aka Casper) around the 40km circuit at College, Keysoe to take him over 8,000 competitive kilometres Left to Right: Flurrie, Jeni Gilbert, Julia and Casper Flurrie and Casper both did their novice year in 2002 and both reached their 8,000km milestone at College, Keysoe. Photograph by Rebecca Kinnarny. Eric G Jones Photography Casper (Sire Manichee, dam Ashmary) was born on 20 th May 1995 at Gilly Payton s home near Hassocks in the middle of a dinner party. He s 90% Crabbet, 10% Old English. He was bred by Ashmary s owner Mandy Keepax specifically for endurance. Julia had had to retire her horse Danny Boy and responded to an advert in the South East Newsletter in August 1999 for a just backed four year old Arab she came home with Casper, her first Arab, and an amazingly successful and close partnership was born. In 2000 they completed some pleasure rides, the 2001 season was lost to foot and mouth, 2002 they started getting serious. Aged 7 Casper completed his ten novice rides gaining 9 x Grade 1 and 1 x Grade 2 finishing 3 rd in the National Novice Championship and winning the South East New Horse Trophy. The most memorable ride of that year was crossing to the Isle of Wight and competing in exceedingly thick fog. 32

Their 2003 season didn t start until June as Casper had had a bit of an accident cross country in the spring which resulted in 16 staples in his left knee and even more in his right axilla. There were initial fears that that was the end of his endurance career how wrong they were! Casper s endurance career spans 14 years and isn t over yet. His incredible achievements are further down this article. Casper has often competed at Novice dressage, scoring in the 70 s and being placed every time out. Particularly sweet success for Julia after always getting funny looks in the warm up arena as she prepared her little 14.3 hh pocket rocket in amongst all the huge dressage horses. Casper once scored a 9 for extended trot and a 3 for halt in the same test from Marietta Fox-Pitt (that ll be the endurance genes coming out then ). In 2013 Casper was invited to the UK Crabbet Convention as part of the endurance parade. Warming up with the other horses got him a little excited as he thought he was warming up for an ER and so wouldn t stand in line, but did do the most amazing, enormous extended trot as a result. In 2007 Julia had bought another youngster by Manichee (Simeric Solaman aka Milo) and by 2013 was competing both Milo, in his Novice year, and Casper herself at different rides. By 2014 it was getting increasingly difficult and costly to compete them separately. 33

Viv Coleman offered to help out and crew, having retired her own horse. Julia had a very different suggestion ride Casper. Well no one in their right mind is going to refuse that dream offer are they? So 2014 and 2015 saw Julia and Viv, very obviously enjoying eating up the kilometres on their matching half-brother chestnuts out and about on the enduro circuit. Between March 2002 and October 2015 Casper has covered 8,068km competitively. 161 starts 67 Grade 1 s, 30 Grade 2 s, 7 race rides and a Gold at the Golden Horse Shoe Casper won the 65/65 trophy at North Norfolk three years running (2007, 2008 and 2009). He completed the Lindum 170km in 2007 and 2009 and 100km at Kings Forest in He has been placed in the National Championships Top 6 in 2007,2008 and 2009 and came 2 nd in the Veteran 83km ER at Cirencester in North Norfolk Ride in 2009 taken by West End Photography It is on the second day of the 130km (65/65) two day ride, which Casper won for the third time in a row in

Casper has been a stalwart member of Julia s family for 16 years and was even a pageboy at her wedding. Matt is very understanding about Julia s other man. Casper is a total sweetheart, hardly ever does anything wrong and is really easy to ride and to crew for. He can be a little grumpy about being touched and can try to nip when his girth is done up, rugs changed etc. Finally he has come to an agreement with the osteopath that its vaguely ok and now begrudgingly admits, in his old age, that actually a relaxing massage is rather nice. Cardinal Panache is currently standing at an impressive 11 th place out of the 62 horses who have completed 5,000km or more in the EGB All Time Distance League Table 36 An Amazing Partnership Photo by Al Webb Photography

ENDURANCE TIPS FROM IZZY - THE ENDURANCE COB Disclaimer: these tips may not be completely aligned with the proper way of Endurance riding. Oops. 1. Choose only rides that have parking on grass. It is devastating to get off the lorry, filled with excitement, only to find we are on gravel, tarmac or anything other than grass. It makes us sad. 2. Ensure you have lots of tasty food for us. I implore all you Arab humans to teach my human how much food is required. It is so tiresome having to drag her to any feed bowl I can find to sate my appetite. Being a good doer is such a trial. 3. What s all this about riding a consistent rhythm? This approach is really dull. Have a fabulous gallop whenever you can and a little walk to catch our breath. It s all about the fun! I keep being told that this is naughty and not to be encouraged but then I just can t help being very naughty 4. It s critical for us horses to have a wee on long rides. Otherwise galloping is uncomfortable! It s better to have lots of short wees with a little snack of grass at the same time. So much more pleasant. Try it your horse will love you. 5. Don t forget how important tasty food is. Oh, sorry, have I already mentioned the food? Well, I am a cob food is what I live for. 6. Relax and have fun. If your horse is a bit excited, just go with it. Even I can t buck my way around 35 km. 7. To keep your horse happy befriend someone with an anorexic Arab your horse can finish their lunch whilst you keep their human chatting and none the wiser in fact you will make the Arab owner very happy by making her think her precious darling has eaten for a change! 8. Don t rush us back on the lorry after the ride. Let us have a wander, hand graze us (Refer to Point 1) and let us chill out. The not rushing off quality is very valuable in a human. Use these tips to give your horse a fantastic time this season. And, if you see an 18 year old cob that looks a little hungry, feel free to feed me at any time. Absolutely anytime. Whatever you have. I am not fussy. See you all at Graffham so you d best bring extra horsey food.. 40

GOLD STANDARD AWARDS The Committee are very pleased to announce a new award commencing this season which will be generously presented and sponsored by Sue Cooper. Gold Standard Award rosettes will be given to each South East Group horse which completes the entire current season with no fails (including retirements) on their mastercard for GER and CER classes AND which has successfully completed seven or more competitive rides (GER and/or CER) during that season. The rides can be at any distance offered as a competitive class (i.e k) and multi-day rides with an overnight hold will be counted as one ride. Pleasure rides, both vetted and unvetted, will not count towards this award. The Gold Standard rosettes will be awarded at our BAM and Annual Awards evening in December. Our current Group helping requirements will apply for eligibility. Sue s inspiration for this award was the fact that her lovely Welsh cob mare, Gwibedog Bethan, who has just retired from competition, has completed approximately 2000km in a mixture of graded and pleasure rides without ever once failing the vet. Sue felt that this was a very worthy achievement, not only by her but by others, that deserved recognition and that this award would apply to all levels of the sport, including hairy ponies carted around in rusty Transits! 49 TRILBY S FAVOURITE CHRISTMAS PRESENT The more grotty weather we have, the more I am just loving this coat! It s a longer length, softshell riding jacket. It is windproof, with a fleece lining, its got a bit of stretch in it and is fleece lined. The official blurb says This HKM Pro Team Softshell Jacket is guaranteed to be breathable. Although the seams are not taped, the jacket is water tight and windproof. It has a lovely tailored fit and two practical front pockets with zips to keep your keys and phone safe. The zip is two way, and covered, and the back vent has poppers. The jacket has a hood and on the inside is a lovely polar fleece lining. It's easy care too, being machine washable and can be popped in the tumble dryer. It struggles a bit to keep you totally dry in monsoon conditions, but the windproof longer length is a godsend and it doesn t flap about like traditional riding macs, plus its warm and toasty and the hood is big enough to go over your riding hat should you wish! I didn t do that as am modelling another present knitted Christmas Pudding hat cover p.s. I gave my Mother (Gnome Crew) this camping toilet for Christmas to replace the 30 year old one with a broken seat that we ve been suffering with she was so thrilled with it, pronounced it her best Christmas Present and even started planning to make it a velvet bag so it could travel without getting scratched We are clearly not a normal family! 49

I have many years of experience and success with riders and horses both internationally and nationally in the following disciplines: Endurance, Show Jumping and Eventing Come for a lesson here at Hornshill, West Sussex or at home Good competitive prices horseygranny@btinternet.com

CHRISTINE S FAVOURITE CHRISTMAS PRESENT Best ever lucky ride pants Icebreaker merino wool undies are simply the best they are amazingly comfortable, even when sitting in a soggy saddle or on an 80k CER in 32 C! They dry almost instantly too. Very thrilled with my new ones for the 2016 season (and no its not me modelling them here! I wish.) MANDY S FAVOURITE CHRISTMAS PRESENT My Christmas present to myself was a pair of LeMieux lambskin GP Numnahs. I have gone for lambskin as the wool is softer than old sheep and it catches less on fine hair but it took a bit of tracking down as very few firms offer the option now. It also has a swan neck which is designed to relieve pressure on her spine and will also aid cooling. I also liked the Velcro girth straps that mean I won t have to worry about forgetting to put the girth through the straps or battle with the girth straps when I do remember! As a present for the rest of my family, I have bought a yellow laundry bag in order to stop Marley s grey hairs getting on the next wash! 51

This is a very special ride with an atmosphere all of its own. I did two 32km s, the course is a wonderful mix of downland, forestry, lanes and fab views. The people are all friendly, the pubs are good what is there not to like? Well worth a ferry crossing planning to return this year come and join the three day island party I can t recommend it enough! Trilby Herriott I took Doyenne to do two 40km s in What a beautiful ride this was. We rode through bluebell woods, wild garlic woods, and along leafy country lanes with birds singing all around and a profusion of wild flowers in the hedgerows and roadside verges. We rode past beautiful houses and farms with fields full of lambs, lambs (and even more lambs), then cantered across the tops with views of the coast and The Needles in the distance. Back at the venue, everyone was just so friendly. The sponsors had stalls selling rugs and beads, and enough people stayed for the prize giving to make it very special. Despite the poor weather conditions the weekend was very successful and extremely enjoyable. I know there was disappointment that so few people actually made the trip from the mainland, but hopefully the news has spread, and more people will come in Kate Curry so

THE JOY OF GOOD MANNERS AND THE BENEFIT TO ALL As a group we are proud of our reputation for sanity and good manners, both at the venue and out on the course. We wish to encourage new recruits to our wonderful sport and not frighten them off with bad riding or thoughtlessness. It is also a matter of health and safety we want as few incidents and injuries as possible! Here are a few gentle reminders: When out on the course ride considerately, to be on the safe side treat every horse/rider combo you come across as an inexperienced rider on a young and green horse (not just fellow competitors, but also locals out hacking) stay well back, call to announce your presence, pass wide and slow. Once past, let them know when you re going to speed up. If someone asks to overtake you, you should move out of the way as soon as possible. Pass pedestrians slowly and thank them as you do so. With gates/narrow bridges & paths/hazards pass through yourself and wait for the person behind you to get through safely before you move on, again, check with them before moving on. Drive/move around the venue as though every horse is a youngster out at his first event pass wide and slow and keep horses under control and dogs on a short fixed length lead. Crews should be courteous to fellow road users, competitors etc crew spots can be awkward and tight so please park and crew thoughtfully. Crew ONLY at designated crew spots More help and details can be found in the EGB handbook or on the website If you witness thoughtless. bad or dangerous behaviour, then please, for all our sakes report it. Making a complaint should not be seen as snitching, meddling or trouble-making, it is a method of making our sport safer and more pleasurable for all by stamping out bad behaviour. Help and advice on how to go about this are on the next page. 56

MAKING AN INFORMAL COMPLAINT ABOUT ANOTHER RIDER/CREW/ VOLUNTEER Sadly, from time to time, the South East committee is made aware of behaviour at rides on the route which, intentionally or unintentionally, falls below the standards that we would hope for. It is important that if you feel that the safety or well-being of your horse, yourself or another participant has been put at risk by another that you report it ideally to the Technical Steward at a national ride, the Ride Organiser at a Group ride or, if you prefer, the Chair of the South East Group Rosemary Attfield (horseygranny@btinternet.com ) or other member of the committee. This will help us build up a picture of what is going on at events and out on the rides and, if the same name continually crops up, we can have a quiet word with the person concerned before matters escalate to the point where someone makes a formal complaint to the EGB Disciplinary panel. Please would you make a note of the following things to include with your report:- Your Name, Your Rider Number, Your Horse s Name Volunteer/Rider/ Crew s name & number, if applicable Name of horse(s) involved, if known or applicable Ride name and Class Any witnesses to the incident, but please do not discuss it with them A brief description of what happened You can download and use the Ride Incident Report form from the EGB website if you wish. Ride Organisers should have copies of the form at a ride. There is a flow chart in the Members Handbook giving more detailed information, on raising a Complaint and who to make it to, in the Rules & Recommendation Section, in the 2015 version this can be found on pages 141&142. Your complaint will be treated in confidence. 57

RAISING MONEY FOR THE SOUTH EAST GROUP THE EASY WAY Every EGB Group is responsible for running events and rides to raise funds for equipment and other ride and Group expenses. As a sports club, you may be surprised to hear that we are eligible to benefit from the fundraising website Did you know that whenever you buy anything online - from your weekly shop to your annual holiday - you could be raising a free donation for Endurance GB South East Group? There are nearly 3,000 retailers including Amazon, John Lewis, Aviva, thetrainline and Sainsbury's, who will donate a percentage of the amount you spend to Endurance GB South East Group to say thank you for shopping with them. In addition if you buy online for work (e.g. office supplies, IT equipment, flights or train tickets) you can raise 100s for Endurance GB South East Group by using easyfundraising.org.uk, without any additional cost to your business. Easyfundraising works with lots of business retailers like Amazon, Staples, Viking, Apple, thetrainline, who will donate a small percentage of what you spend to Endurance GB South East Group to say thank you for shopping with them. It's really simple, and doesn't cost you anything. 58

All you have to do is: 1. Go to 2. Sign up for free 3. Get shopping Your donations will be collected by easyfundraising and automatically sent to Endurance GB South East Group. It couldn't be easier! If you shop on your mobile or tablet, get the free easyfundraising app and you'll never miss a donation. To get it, visit the App Store or Google Play and search for 'easyfundraising' or find out more here: There are no catches or hidden charges and Endurance GB South East Group will be really grateful for your donations. Different retailers may attach restrictions such as no payment via Paypal so please check the information button before checking out. Thank you for your support 59

ROSEMARY ATTFIELD A RARE BREED The Horse and Hound have kindly let me reproduce some extracts from an of article they published on 10 November 2000, which may be of interest, especially at this time of year when endurance horses are being brought back into serious work 16 years later and she s still putting most of us to shame with her energy. Rosemary Attfield is full of contradictions that the horse world knows well. Apparently fearsome, but with a heart of gold, phenomenally hard working, but always with time for others, apparently indestructible, but always ploughing on regardless of injury. She is, however, a rare breed in the sport of endurance, an equestrian all-rounder who competed at national level as a show jumper in the 1960s and early 1970s, she also evented and trained her daughter Michelle, a member of Britain s three-day event young rider team in the 1980s. Rosemary worked in tandem with the late Joan Allen, a similarly multitalented horsewoman whose own spirit of adventure led her to take up Arab racing in her 60s. Together they were among a small group of pioneers who adopted one of the youngest and fastest growing horse sports and made it their own. Now in her late fifties, when Rosemary filled out a form for the British team selectors last year, they were staggered to discover that she spends around 35 hours a week in the saddle. The pre-season fitness regime, which is the same for her 100-mile endurance horses as it was for the yard s eventing string, includes three to four weeks of walking and then four weeks of trotting around the lanes and hills. 60

Once the horses are trotting, Rosemary takes them to the coast to work them knee-deep in sea water. Canter work follows next at a slow collected pace. The work is now interspersed with gymnastic jumping and flatwork in the school. She believes more horses break down today than they used to because the basic fitness regime is neglected and that too little attention is paid to hardening the legs. She also stresses the importance of getting the endurance horse to work from behind. Unfortunately, so many people don t know how to use the seat or how to get the horse working correctly from behind. You see so many endurance horses tip over onto the forehand and then the front legs do not last. After supporting her daughters competitive ambitions, Rosemary got the endurance bug as an organiser and rider. On the first British team that went to Montcuq in 1981, she was chef d equipe at the 1991 European championships. Given her own background, she has instilled the advantages of being an all-rounder in her pupils. They do a lot of work in the school which many endurance riders don t do. The horses are taught to carry themselves so they are better balanced when going across different terrain, and find it easier than many horses that just go on the forehand. The rewards for endurance riding in Britain, thanks to Rosemary s investment in time, skills and knowledge, may be just around the corner.* * Written sixteen years ago and yes they were. 61

THOUGHTS FROM AN EDITOR WITH EYE STRAIN Well I appear to have managed to fill sixty four pages, and have just spent a whole evening proof reading and tweaking. I hope that you have enjoyed your read (and also hope that you didn t find too many mistakes). I m still slightly in shock at just how much time it has taken to compile a complete issue and am now even more in awe of Lindsay Sparrow for achieving this on a regular basis with no fuss! Putting all this together has made me impatient for the season to start, I am sooo looking forward to getting out there again I have had a longer wait than most due to my 2015 season stopping at the beginning of July with Sham s injury. Outside it is freezing cold, wet and grey. It gets dark depressingly early and light irritatingly late and yet my head is now full of summer, horses, camping, competing, triumphs and tribulations. Roll on 2016! Please, please send to me any articles, stories, anecdotes, tips or ride reports for the next issue the more variety the better I had quite a few free gift pages with the BAM minutes and prizegiving with this issue to ease me in, sadly I don t have that luxury for the next one so all help will be very gratefully received.
