1 STEWARDS REPORT Murrumbidgee Turf Club WAGGA WAGGA RACECOURSE Friday 5 May 2017 Weather: Fine Track: Good (4) Rail: True STEWARDS: T.J.Davidson (Chairman), J.A.Shultz, T.J.Vassallo & D.R.McLean (10u25b) RACE 1: Maiden Plate 1200m: Dawn Raid- Held up in the early part of the straight. When questioned regarding his riding and in particular as to why he settled so far back in the early stages rider T. Berry explained that he had been instructed to go back from a wide barrier and let the horse settle where comfortable as it has a minor breathing issue. He agreed with Stewards with the benefit of hindsight that after beginning well he may have been able to obtain a position with cover closer but he was mindful of being caught wide. He added his mount travelled well and after being held up on straightening his mount found the line well. Trainer Mr M. Dale confirmed the instructions issued and added while satisfied with the ride it would have been better suited if able to settle closer. Mosh Vain- Trainer Mr C. Heywood was fined $200 under LR35 for the late declaration of Ms K. O Hara as the rider of the gelding. Bumped on jumping. Original Prankster- Slow to begin. Hung outwards throughout. Rider M.Cahill stated after being slow to begin his mount raced very greenly throughout. He added the gelding travelled well in the middle stages but commenced to hang out passing the 700m and disappointed with its failure to respond in the straight. Trainer Mr G. Kirkup could offer no explanation for today s disappointing performance adding it was his intention to send the horse back to barrier education. A post-race veterinary examination did not detect any abnormalities. Mr Kirkup was advised an official warning would be placed on Original Prankster s racing manners. Prince Jacko- Rider B. Ward was warned regarding using the whip in a manner which raised his hand above shoulder height. The Club s veterinary officer reported the gelding had tied up following the event. Veedouble- Trainer Mr G. Colvin was fined $100 under LR35 for the late declaration of J. Penza as the rider of the colt. Event- Shifted out under pressure in the straight. Sweettalkingwilly- Bumped on jumping. Raced greenly throughout. Bumped near the 950m. Checked near the 1000m when crowded to the inside of Mosh Vain (Ms K. O Hara) which shifted in when not quite clear. Ms K.O Hara was reprimanded for careless riding under AR137(a). Plenary- Bumped near the 950m.

2 Nackers Magee- Hampered passing the 100m when Prince Jacko rolled out. Tupelo Miss- Blundered on jumping. RACE 2: Class 1 Handicap 1200m: Belletusa- Rider T. Berry explained that as the mare had previously over raced he was instructed to ride the horse quiet and attempt to get back and obtain cover. He added his mount never really travelled at any stage and after following Marco Man to the home turn it did not respond to his riding in the straight. He added he had suggested to connections that they should look to removing the ear muffs from the mare. Bckground Scalper- Held up and unable to improve between the 400m and 300m before being taken outwards to improve. Coolaminyah Kid- Slow to begin. Dutiful- Eased near the 800m when racing in restricted room between Background Scalper and Lord Archibald. Returned having bled from both nostrils. As this was the second time the mare had bled, Trainer Mr S. Spackman was advised that under the provisions of AR53A(5) it would now incur a lifetime ban from racing. Firespark- Raced keenly in the early stages. Miss Belle Geddes- Held up between the 400m and 300m. Sikum- Held up and unable to improve between the 300m and 200m. The Walrus- Raced wide throughout. Lord Archibald- Raced wide throughout. Tearful Kitty- Slow into stride. RACE 3: Class 3 Handicap 1000m: Cagney- Bumped after the start. A post-race veterinary examination of the gelding found it to have abrasions to the off hind fetlock and to be lame in the off fore. Trainer Mr C. Widdison was advised a veterinary clearance must be submitted prior to the horse racing again. Viceroy- Held up in the early part of the straight. Our Project- Bumped after the start. Badly held up between the 400m and 100m. Checked near the 800m. At a subsequent inquiry B. Vale pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR137(a) in that near the 800m he did permit Lightning Alert to shift in when not clear of Our Project which was checked and lost running to which it was entitled. B. Vale s license to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Saturday 13 May 2017 and to expire on Sunday 21 May 2017, on which day he may ride. When questioned regarding his riding in the middle stages and why he shifted out approaching the 400m resulting in his mount becoming held up, R. Bensley explained that he was following Viceroy into the race but near the 400m when that gelding had runners in front of it and to its outside he felt Viceroy may have difficulty in obtaining clear running and he therefore made the decision to shift out and try to get on the back

3 of Cagney. He added shortly after shifting to the outside his mount became badly held up and was unable to secure clear running until near the 100m. His explanations were noted. Oh What a Thief- Blundered on jumping. The Flash One- Blundered on jumping. RACE 4: F & M Benchmark 70 Handicap 1400m: Giant s Daughter- Rider Ms J. Taylor stated that after beginning well her mount was posted three wide and after initially responding to her riding it died on its run over the concluding stages. A post-race veterinary examination did not detect any abnormalities. Tough As Teak- Held up and unable to improve between the 350m and 200m. Angelic Lass- Raced wide throughout. Big Spender- Badly held up between the 400m and 200m when attempting to improve into insufficient running to the inside of Addchan. Rider L. King(a) was shown a replay of the incident and advised to ensure there is sufficient running before putting himself into that position again. Miss Farloo- Held up on the home turn. Forty Nine Riddles- When questioned regarding today s improved performance and the mare racing back in the field today, Trainer Mr C. Davis explained that the instructions issued had never varied but today with a senior rider on the horse had been suited by being able to obtain a rearward position. He added he had not altered the mare s work but it had been suited by the removal of blinkers and the stable had expected an improved showing. His explanations were noted. RACE 5: Benchmark 60 Handicap 1300m: Spud O reilly- Held up in the early part of the straight. Rider C. Brown stated his mount was slow to begin and then failed to muster early speed. He added when the tempo of the event slowed in the middle stages his mount travelled fairly but was extremely disappointing with its failure to run on in the straight. Bill n Eve- Laid inwards in the straight. Walshie- Rider T. Clark explained his mount enjoyed a good run in an advantageous position. He added when a narrow run presented itself at the top of the straight the gelding was reluctant to take it and his mount did not seem to appreciate racing in restricted room. A post-race veterinary examination did not detect any abnormalities. Stable foreman Mr J. McMahon reported the horse had swelling to the off side eye. Willy White Socks- Slow to begin. Smiling at Shadows- Slow to begin. Rider P. Scorse(a) in the presence of his master Mr P. Jones was questioned regarding his handling of the gelding in the early stages and between the 700m and 400m. Apprentice Scorse stated he was instructed to get back and obtain cover and take the gelding to the outside in the straight. Mr Jones confirmed the instructions issued. When questioned regarding him losing excessive ground after the start P. Scorse(a) stated after viewing the films he had erred in over restraining after the start and lost more ground than

4 necessary. He agreed with Stewards that he had erred and should have made a more concerted effort in the middle stages to try and improve his position. Mr Jones agreed with the concerns of the Stewards. In taking no direct action Stewards were mindful of Apprentice Scorse s relative inexperience (20 rides) however he was advised he must ride all his mounts so as not to arouse query. Superoo- Raced wide throughout. Orange Time- Hampered on jumping when Mahsense shifted out. Yet Tobe Convinced- Began awkwardly. Zatigeroo- Momentarily steadied near the 800m while racing tight to the inside of Orange Time. RACE 6: 3yo Benchmark 69 Handicap 1600m: Lord Macau- Held up and unable to improve between the 400m and 200m. Forever Newyork- Raced wide throughout and hung out on the home turn. Mr Tickets- Raced keenly in the early and middle stages. Griddlebone- Steadied near the 1400m when racing in restricted room to the inside of Lord Macau. Checked approaching the 150m. At a subsequent inquiry A. Hyeronimus was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under AR137(a) in that near the 150m he did permit Lord Macau to shift out when insufficiently clear of Griddlebone which checked. A. Hyeronimus s license to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Sunday 14 May 2017 and to expire on Sunday 28 May 2017, on which day he may ride. Inch Perfect- Slow to begin. Cooee March- Raced wide throughout. RACE 7: Kristopher Graydon Jewellers Wagga Gold Cup Open Handicap 2000m: Montauk- Crowded after the start. Held up near the top of the straight. Rider T. Clark stated the instructions were to try and settle mid-field but after receiving crowding out of the gates he elected to go back and obtain cover. He added his mount settled and travelled well and once clear in the straight the gelding ran on strongly. Stable representative Mr L. Prior confirmed the instructions issued. Overdue- Carried wider by Pemberley near the 500m. Midnight Obsession- Proved difficult to settle in the early stages. Rose s Song- Raced wide throughout. RACE 8: Benchmark 70 Handicap 1200m: Leucura- Held up in the early part of the straight. Vinnie Vega- Change of tactics- From wide barrier to settle back. Settled back. Reine Happy- Bounded on jumping.

5 Cash Crisis- Slow to begin. Rider N. Souquet explained after being slightly slow to begin he had to make some use of the gelding to obtain the lead. He added his mount travelled well but weakened in the straight and in his opinion may have come to the end of its preparation. Trainer Mr C. Widdison agreed with the rider s comments and added the gelding was up significantly in class today. He added Cash Crisis would now be sent for a spell. A post-race veterinary examination found the gelding to have an elevated heart rate and to be moderately distressed. Cobra Kai- Steadied near the 950m when crowded to the inside of Mitchell Road which shifted in and away from Therese. Stewards noted the following riders exceeded the permitted strikes with the whip prior to the 100m under AR137A(5)(a)(ii) Race 2 T. Berry (Balletusa) 6 strikes Race 4 Ms K.
