From the Headmaster s desk Dear Parents and Friends of the Academy Thomas Jefferson May has been a busy month with the approach of the mid-year examinations. The apprentices have commenced their exams. We wish them well as they write in conjunction with the demands of their daily responsibilities. We have seen the first year apprentices working very hard and showing pleasing progress. It was great to have our recently retired riding master, Vincent Curtis visit the Academy. He spent a morning with Rhys van Wyk observing the first years going through their paces. We congratulate the following apprentices on their riding achievements: Franklin Maleking for securing his 1 st win Luyolo Mxothwa, Collen Storey and Collen Thabana for riding their first race rides Franklin Maleking s first win riding Matteo at Clairwood on May 20, 2012 In celebration of Jarryd Penny and Franklin Maleking s first winner s, the academy treated each of them and their fellow apprentices to a braai. We were delighted that Mr and Mrs Jones, the owners of Penhaligon (the horse that Jarryd won on), trainers Kevin and Alison Wright and stipendiary steward, Rakesh Jeewanlall took time to join in Jarryd s celebration. We appreciate their continued support.

2 There are a number of really exciting projects taking place around the Academy, which we will be able to report on in the forthcoming months. All the apprentices were fortunate enough to attend The Royal Show. They thoroughly enjoyed themselves with the South African Lipizzaner presentation being the highlight of their visit. On behalf of the Academy, we would like express our sincere thanks Mr Terry Strachan, CEO of the Royal Agricultural Society of Natal for the complimentary tickets to the show. In closing, the board, management, staff and apprentices of the Academy express their sincere condolences to family and friends of Dr. Rob Gatley, who recently passed away. Dr Gatley served as a member of staff at the Academy for a number of years, teaching Equine Studies. He was a popular member of staff, especially amongst the apprentices. He will be missed. 3 Korean delegation visits Academy Senior executives and representatives of the Korea Racing Authority (KRA) were in Durban to attend the KRA Fillies Guineas and the KRA Guineas that took place at Greyville on 5 May They found time in their busy schedule to visit the Academy and were suitably impressed with our training and education progamme we have on offer. This was great a learning opportunity for our first years as they gained practical experience in doing pace work with another horse and rider. Denise Lee turns 21 4 th year apprentice Denise Lee, celebrated her 21 st birthday on May 2. One of the gifts she received on her special day was a winner for trainer Greg Ennion at Kenilworth. Denise rode Feel My Love. On the same night Terrance Welch, our riding master in Cape Town and her fellow apprentices Jason Smitsdorff and Girish Goomanye, treated her to dinner at a restaurant in Milnerton. The Academy congratulates Denise on this milestone in her life. 4

The 1 st race took place at Turffontein on May 12 and was won by Nooresh Juglall on Coco Stripes. Neo Qaule came second on Above the Moon and Hennie Greyling came third on Active Power. The 2 nd race took place at Clairwood on May 20 and was won by Franklin Maleking riding Matteo. This was also Franklin s 1 st winner. Justine King came second on Fools Gold and Lerato Mohapi third riding Mister Slam. The 3 rd race took place at Turffontein on May 26. Tshepiso Mat soele won this race riding Caprichosa with Neo Qaule coming second on Greenwich. Doctor Sifiso Lembethe came third on Dual Alliance. Phones his tjommie 'Ai boet, I've got a story to tell you, I just saw a Subaru and Ferrari dicing, neck in neck ek sê, like 300km/h' Tjommie - 'Pretty hip ey?'
