From the Headmaster s desk Dear Parents and Friends of the Academy George E Woodberry An action packed and productive first quarter has come to an end. I must thank everyone who made it so successful. The new apprentices have adjusted well to their environment. Our new staff have added great value to the running of the Academy. We can now look forward to the rest of this year with great anticipation. The first year apprentices returned home for their two week break. We wish them all a happy Easter and may they have wonderful time with their families and friends. We trust that they will return to the Academy filled with energy and, hopefully will not gain too much weight ready to face the next challenge ahead of them, and that is getting ready to go out to the main training tracks. On signing the reports, I am pleased to note the standards that have been set. I encourage the apprentices to continue working hard. The pressure and workload will without a doubt increase as the year progresses. The first year apprentices entertained us on the evening of the 17 th March when we watched them perform in their annual concert. Their presentation of The Days of our Lives with an Academy perspective was hilarious, and their impersonations of a number of the staff was perfect see full story later on in this Newsletter. In support of the Coastal Horse Care Unit, all the apprentices purchased tickets and attended the premier of the new horseracing movie The Cup at Gateway Shopping Centre on March 11. They all seemed to thoroughly enjoy this truly inspirational movie. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the following apprentices: Wesley Marwing for riding his 1 st race ride on March 18 at Clairwood for trainer Tony Rivalland, and for securing his 1 st win at the Vaal on March 27 for Gavin van Zyl this was Wesley s 3 rd race ride. Wesley only started his training at the Academy during February this year Donovan Dillon on securing his 1 st double and for riding his 10 th winner Collen Storey for being awarded the Gold Cap for the month of February Craig Zackey for securing his first race ride at Clairwood on March 18

The masters of ceremony were Serino Carlisle and Shadlee Fortune, who did an outstanding job introducing the apprentices and the various acts, as well as holding the entire concert programme together. Masters of Ceremony - Serino Carlisle and Shadlee Fortune The programme started with a hysterical song about life at the Academy written by Mr Marius Nel and sung to the tune of Queen s We are the Champions. Ntokozo Gumede was the lead singer and he was backed by the apprentices. Mtokozo Gumede belting out Queen s We are the champions 3

Ntokozo then wowed the audience with a high energy hip hop dance sequence called An Invitation to Dance. He was then joined on stage by Tristan Godden and did some rapping.

4 Ntokozo then wowed the audience with a high energy hip hop dance sequence called An Invitation to Dance. He was then joined on stage by Tristan Godden and did some rapping. They called themselves T-Square. Tristan Godden & Ntokozo Gumede rapping Shadlee Fortune, Jhondray Doncaster and Callan Murray then got onto the stage and performed a street dance sequence call Skitterbugs. The first half concluded with a skit called Streetwise 2. This skit had Brandon May and Tristan acting as mime artists that came alive when paid some money and the immediately began to street dance. After interval, the apprentices presented a hysterical play called The Days of our Lives. The play reflected a typical day in the life of a 1 st year apprentice at the Academy. From life in the dorms, working at the stables and in the tack room, taking riding lessons, visiting the Academy nurse, having meals in the dining room, working out in the gym and in the class room. The apprentices did an outstanding job impersonating Academy staff members Donna van Wyk (stable manager), Rhys van Wyk (head riding master), Laurence O Donoghue, Stephen Jupp (riding master), Saico Mzaba (groom), Kitty Salvage (kitchen manager), Sr Debbie Butt (nursing sister), Jeremy Downing (gym instructor) and Marius Nel (house master). 4

Shield Teens presentation The Shield Teens presented a fun interactive show called Don t Sweat It at the Academy on Tuesday 20 March.

7 Shield Teens presentation The Shield Teens presented a fun interactive show called Don t Sweat It at the Academy on Tuesday 20 March. The presentation took on the form of a high energy game show stimulating body and mind. Before the game show kicked of, three members of the Shield Team did a dance demo whilst one of the guys did some outstanding beat boxing (making the sounds of musical instruments with your voice). The teams had to answer questions and participate in dance competitions. Team Energy was the outright winners. Prizes were generously handed out. After the show, each apprentices received a complimentary can of Shield anti-perspirant. The 1 st race took place at Turffontein March 3 and was won by Nooresh Juglall on Golden Handshake. Gerrit Olwagen came second on Himalayan Hill and Doctor Sifiso Lembethe came third on Final Score. Nooresh moves to 1 st position on the log, replacing Hennie Greyling. The 2 nd race took place at Clairwood on March 18 and was easily won by Mandla Ntuli on Two Tone Rocka. Julius Mariba came second on Lamorna and Keagan de Melo came third on Show Belle.
