1 NEWSLETTER July 2012 "You need to be aware of what others are doing, applaud their efforts, acknowledge their successes, and encourage them in their pursuits. When we all help one another, everybody wins." Jim Stovall From the Headmaster s desk Dear Parents and Friends of the Academy It is with regret that I start this month s message on a sad note. On behalf of the Academy I wish to offer our sincere condolences to our marketing manager, Charles Grey whose dad recently passed away, and also to apprentice Mathew Thackeray and his family, on the passing of his grandmother. You are all in our thoughts and prayers. With the hype of the Vodacom Durban July, and the Ladbrokes Gold Cup taking place during the month of July, the non race riding apprentices were invited, by the Chairman of Gold Circle Mr Robert Mauvis, to once again form a guard of honour in the parade ring, for the introduction of the jockeys before the main race. They then assisted at the prize giving ceremony. This was all very exciting for them and they thoroughly enjoyed being involved. The Academy once again hosted a successful Charity Race Day at Fairview in Port Elizabeth. An apprentice race took place on the day, which was won by Lerato Mohapi. I would like to thank the organizations that sponsored races, and Charles Grey for organizing the event. As part of their social outreach programme, the apprentices once again assisted, with various tasks at the Coastal Horse Care Unit at Cato Ridge. The first year apprentices also assisted Mr Rhys Van Wyk, with the running of the three preassessment training workshops for prospective apprentices. These workshops serve two purposes, the first being that it provides the applicants with a real experience of what they can expect, if they are selected for an apprenticeship. Secondly it gives the riding masters an ideal opportunity, to assess the potential of each candidate. The race riding apprentices attended a workshop on television presenting/interviewing, which was presented by the well-known TV personality, Martin Locke. The experience they gained was invaluable, and they look forward to further sessions with Mr Locke. Thanks to a generous financial contribution made by the Gauteng Gambling Board, we are thrilled to announce that the up-grade of the facilities at the Academy has begun. This will mean that a lot of activity will be taking place around the Academy. Currently the flat roof surfaces are being resealed, before the repainting of the buildings begin. The refurbishment

2 of the electric fencing, to upgrade the security of the Academy has also started. We are truly grateful to the Gauteng Gambling Board for this financial support. The apprentices have started the third term. This will be a busy time for the Matrics, as they prepare for their oral moderations and their trial exams. We encourage them to study hard, as these exams will contribute a major portion of the marks, to their final results. I would like to congratulate the following apprentices for their academic achievements during the 2 nd term: Brandon May, 1 st in Grade 10 Ryan Munger, 1 st in Grade 11 Donovan Dillon, 1 st in Grade 12 In closing, congratulations to the following on their riding achievements: Keagan de Melo, who was nominated to represent the Academy in the 2012 Asian Young Guns Challenge in Macau during August Nooresh Juglall, on winning the 1 st leg of the Phumelela Gold Apprentice Challenge Grant Van Niekerk, who came second in the Vodacom Durban July. 3 Keagan de Melo to represent SAJA in Macau 4 th year apprentice, Keagan de Melo will be representing the South African Jockey Academy at the 2012 Asian Young Guns Challenge to be held at Taipa Racecourse in Macau on Saturday 4 August. He will be chaperoned by our head riding master, Rhys van Wyk Keagan will compete against other apprentices from Japan, Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand, Korea, Malaysia and Singapore. The 2012 challenge will be over three races. The first race will carry a stake of HK$ , the second HK$ and third HK$ The riders will receive 5% of any prize money won together with the normal riding fee. The points system is 25 points for first, 15 for second, 10 for third, seven for fourth, five for fifth, three for sixth, two for seventh and one for eighth. If any horse is scratched and a replacement is not available, the effected rider will be allotted six points. The winning apprentice will also receive a trophy. The Macau Jockey Club has also arranged other activities for the visiting apprentices such as track work at Taipa Racecourse and various site seeing tours. Keagan was nominated by the Academy to participate in this prestigious competition on May 10, At this time he had secured the most wins and places out of all the apprentices countrywide for the 2011/12 racing season. The Asian Young Guns Challenge, as a concept, was conceived in January 2009 by then Victoria Racing Club (VRC) Chairman, Mr. Rod Fitzroy. It was designed to provide a platform for a racing and competition opportunity, at Flemington, to leading apprentices from Asia and Victoria, with a form of overseas reciprocity for Victorian apprentices attached. The concept was based on a desire to provide a cultural exchange between racing s leaders of tomorrow, which would strengthen the friendly relationship that Australian racing enjoys with its Asian neighbours. The 2009 Challenge was conducted at a VRC race meeting at Flemington Racecourse on Saturday 8 August, across the first three races on the program. It received a good deal of positive media coverage and was an instant success. In 2010 the Singapore Turf Club conducted a three race apprentices Challenge at Kranji on Sunday 18 July. Two riders from Victoria took part, alongside apprentices from Singapore, Japan, Macau, Malaysia and Hong Kong. Apprentice Juan Paul van der Merwe participated in this event last year. He was the first South African ever to be nominated. This is an exciting opportunity for a South African apprentice to be represented in an event of this calibre. This event will provide Keagan, the South African Jockey Academy and racing in South Africa in general with fantastic international exposure. 3

4 The board, management, staff and apprentices at the Academy wish Keagan all the best and we hope he brings back the trophy! Academy Charity Race Day at Fairview The Academy hosted its annual Charity Race Day at Fairview Racecourse on Friday 27 July. The event was a success generating over R in funding for the training and education of apprentices jockeys. A special function for all race sponsors and special guests took place in the HB Christian Room at Fairview a good time was had by all. The Boardwalk Casino & Entertainment World kindly sponsored a weekend for two including breakfast at their new hotel as the prize for the lucky raffle draw. The winner was our riding master in PE, Tex Davie. The Betting World Apprentice Handicap took place on the day adding great excitement and value to our special event. The race was won by Lerato Mohapi riding Dandyman Can. Keagan de Melo came second on Leading the Field, Girish Goomany came third on Detective Barnaby and Donovan Dillon came fourth on Trouble Again. 5 Jarryd Penny, Dennis Wiese, Mitch Wiese and Franklin Maleking Justine King and Sanish Ramgopal Apprentices attend TV Master Class with Martin Locke The race riding apprentices based in Durban, had the fantastic opportunity to attend a master class on television commentating/interviewing, presented by the legendary ex television presenter and personality, Martin Locke. Martin has over 40 years of experience in broadcasting and sports marketing. Most of you will remember him when he presented the SABC s popular sports programme, Topsport. Martin is presently training presenters/commentators throughout South Africa. The workshop, which was a first of a series to be conducted by Martin, took place in the Winning Ways studio at Greyville during July. Each apprentice had the opportunity to be interviewed by Tellytrack presenter, Warren Lenferna. Collen Thabana also had the opportunity to take over Warren s job and interview Bryan Claassen. All their interviews were recorded and played back, so they could watch themselves in action and learn by their mistakes. As you can imagine a good laugh was had by all. These outstanding and practical workshops provide our apprentices with the much needed skills, and experience to gain confidence in front of the camera. Confident and well presented apprentices are often sort after by trainers and owners. Martin introducing himself to the race riding apprentices Warren Lenferna interviewing Keagan de Melo and Thsepiso Mashaba 5

The Academy thanks Gold Circle for the great opportunity. Apprentices reach out to the community Due to their outstanding care for injured, abused and abandoned horses and community work, the 1 st year apprentices selected the Coastal Horse Care Unit (CHCU) as their annual community outreach project. The 1 st years spent a day at the CHCU during July. Gillian Olmesdahl Nee Robertson, the chairperson and manager of the CHCU welcomed them and gave them all an overview of the wonderful work they do with horses and the community. Gill providing the 1 st years with an overview of the Coastal Horse Care Unit 7
