NEWSLETTER May 2011 "All growth depends upon activity. There is no development physically or intellectually without effort, and effort means work." From the Headmaster s desk Calvin Coolidge The month of May has been a quiet month for the Academy without too much excitement. The only real adrenaline rush experienced was when Mr Van Wyk called us for assistance when Sonwabile Papu had been kicked by the horse while on an outride in the sugarcane fields. On arrival at the scene of the accident, I realized that Sonwabile was in a serious condition with a badly broken leg, and that we needed the professional support of our Nursing Sister, Debbie Butt. He was immediately transported to the main entrance of Summerveld, where a professional paramedic team took over and transferred him to the Westville Hospital. I was extremely impressed by the bravery that this young man displayed. I am happy to report that he is well on his way to recovery; however it will still be a long time before he will be able to ride a horse and continue his training. The racing season has commenced and due to this, it is evident that our apprentices are now struggling to secure race rides. However they continue to work hard, both at their riding careers and their academics. They will soon be writing the mid-year exams. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the following apprentices for their outstanding achievements: Jason Smitsdorff for securing his first win for the trainer Glen Kotzen at Greyville. Donovan Dillon for securing his win for trainer Muis Roberts at Clairwood. This was a chance ride that Donovan picked up Anthony Andrews on winning his first listed race, the R Glenlair Trophy Race over 3200 meters on horse Key Castle. Jarryd Penny for being awarded the prestigious Gold Cap for professional apprentice for the month of April. Jarryd also signed his race riding papers. Mandla Ntuli for signing his race riding papers First year apprentices Craig Zackey, Heavelon van der Hoven, Luyolo Mxothwa, Collen Storey and Collen Thabana for qualifying to ride work at track.

Jason Smitsdorff being lead into the Winners Enclosure at Greyville Tex Davies congratulates Anthony Andrews on winning his first listed race Jarryd Penny sporting his Gold Cap Donovan Dillon winning on Baranova at Clairwood I am extremely proud of these achievements and may our apprentices continue to work hard and succeed. Best wishes Graham Bailey Some important dates to remember DATE ACTIVITY Friday 24 June 2 nd term ends Monday 11 July 3 rd term starts Friday 30 September 3 rd term ends Monday 10 October 4 th term starts Tuesday 15 December 4 th term ends. 3 Forthcoming events DATE Friday 22 July Saturday 10 September Sunday 16 October Friday 30 September Friday 21 October EVENT SAJA Charity Race Dat at Arlington, Port Elizabeth SAJA Charity Race Day at Turffontein, Johannesburg SAJA Charity Race Day at Greyville, Durban SAJA Golf Day at the Durban Country Club Annual Speech Day and Prize-Giving Ceremony at Greyville Apprentice birthdays celebrated during May Denies Lee Tshepiso Mashaba Xavier Carstens Sanele Duma Siyabonga Duma Here s wishing you all a very happy birthday and trust that you had an awesome day!!! Cultural day at the Academy In conjunction with the Grade 10 syllabi (Afrikaans, isizulu, Mathematical Literacy and Consumer Studies), the learners were required to research and prepare a main dish of a culture of their choice. Four groups participated in this interesting and fun project and selected and prepared the following traditional meals: Zulu tripe, ujeqe (steamed bread), amadumbe, sweet potato and imfino (African spinach) Mexican enchiladas Afrikaans vetkoek with a chicken and mayonnaise filling Indian lamb bunny chow Each group had to prepare enough food for 15 people. Kitty Salvage (granny), kindly allowed the learners to make use of the kitchen to prepare their dishes. The captain of each group delegated a responsibility to each member group such as chopping onions, cooking the meat etc. They were given only three hours to prepare their respective meals. Chopping up meat for the bunny chows Academy kitchen filled with busy apprentices Collen Storey preparing chicken for the echiladas 3

The Academy staff members and the rest of the apprentices were invited to select one dish at a cost of R5. The monies were raised for the dormitory fund. Everybody enjoyed their meal and a good time was had by all. This project also allowed us all the opportunity to learn more about other cultures through their food. Lorenzia serving Mexican enchiladas Mrs Dawn Lindsay trying the isizulu food Apprentices enjoying the Afrikaans vetkoek Academy hosts Careers Expo The Academy once again hosted the Racing South Africa Schools Career Expo 2011 on the May. Despite the adverse weather conditions, the Expo was a great success attracting over 1000 learners from schools situated throughout KwaZulu Natal. On their arrival at the Academy, the learners were given a briefing by Debbie Harvey-Moon, the event coordinator. Debbie welcomes the learners and briefs them on the day s activities The schools were broken into groups of 30 and were each allocated a counselor who then took their respective groups to the following exhibits: Race horse simulator demo Academy riding masters, Terrance Welch and Laurence O Donoghue, provided the learners with a fun interactive demonstration on our race horse simulators. This demo was very popular and had the learners screaming with laughter as they got to see their teachers and fellow learners giving the simulators a try. Terrance Welch provides a learner with some riding techniques on the equisizer 4

Equine care Donna van Wyk, our stable manager, together with apprentices Teiller van Schalkwyk and Lorenzia van der Rheide, used Schaara (Donna s horse) to teach the visiting learners how to interact with a horse. Schaara does not kick or bite and loves having her hind quarters scratched and brushed. This was a great opportunity for the learners, especially as many of them had never touched a horse before. Some of the learners were given grooming brushes to brush Schaara and comb her mane and tail and some were taught how to feed her treats. Donna also spoke to them about feeding routines, horse passports and basic veterinary work and horse care. Grooming demo Willy Mahlaba and Saico Mzaba demonstrated the grooming process and various grooming techniques such as brushing with different types of brushes and metal curry combs and hoof picking. They also explained the different types of feed for different types/breeds of horses and the effects the feed have on the horses. Willy Mahlaba demonstrating how to groom a horse Farrier Demo Philip Heare, Master Farrier (DIP WCF) showed learners the art of taking the horse shoe off, replacing with one of two methods, either by what is known as hot shoeing (the farrier heats the metal shoe in a forge) and then burns to the sole of the horse foot, beats to correct size on an anvil and then it gets nailed to the foot. Or by way of cold shoeing, which is simpler in that the shoe is removed and another replaced with nails. He also discussed the anatomy of the horse s hoof and opened discussion with the learners with regard to farrier as a career choice, what qualifications are required, long term benefits... own business etc. Philip Heare demonstrating the art of shoeing a horse Philip hot shoeing a horse Audio visual presentation on the Academy Mr Charles Grey, the Academy marketing manager, provided the learners with an informative talk on the Academy and the criteria for admission. Mr Grey also showed them a DVD on the Academy. 5

Some of the apprentices also did a talk on the day in the life of an apprentice at the Academy. Jose Barnard explaining to the visitors the day in a life of an apprentice jockey Visiting learners thoroughly enjoying Mr Grey s presentation Talk on horse racing & television presenting - Deez Dayanand, a presenter on Tellytrack and Racing SA representative, gave an informative talk on the world of horseracing. He also spoke about the career opportunities in the television industry. Deez opened the floor to a question and answer session which generated great interest and participation from learners. Mock horse race the learners had the opportunity to watch some of our apprentices, donned in full racing gear, participate in an exciting mock horse race on our training track. Deez Dayanand (Tellytrack presenter) did the race commentary. This presentation was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Apprentices racing each other on the Academy training track A surprise edition to the day s activities was a fantastic performance by the Ningizimu Special School Marimba Band. The band played some great tunes and entertained the crowd. Members of the band entertaining the crowd 6

After watching the mock race, each learner was given a goodie bag that included a sandwich, juice, fruit and a sample of an energy shake from Futurelife. Learners waiting for their goodie bags Two happy learners with their goodie bags Racing South Africa thanks the following for making the careers expo a success: The Academy for providing the venue The Academy staff and apprentices for all their assistance Durban Tourism for providing the bags for the goodies Apprentices recognized and rewarded for their riding skills NAME DESCRIPTION AWARD Donovan Dillon Secured his 1 st winner Certificate & braai Jason Smitsdorff Secured his 1 st winner Certificate & braai Jarryd Penny Professional apprentice for April Certificate & Gold Cap Bryan Classen Rode his 1 st race ride Certificate & scroll Luyolo Mxothwa Started work riding at track Certificate Craig Zackey Started work riding at track Certificate Heavelon van der Hoven Started work riding at track Certificate Collen Storey Started work riding at track Certificate Phumelela Gold Apprentice Challenge 1 st leg from February July nd leg August November 2011 Three Apprentice Challenge races took place during the month of May.
