The Muffy Seaton video was well liked. In place of a March meeting on Thursday, 3/10, we will set up the Carriage Display for the Rocky Mountain Horse Expo, coming up March 11 th, 12 th and 13 th at the National Western Complex. Please give me a call at if you can give us a few hours to help out talking to folks at our booth or bring a carriage or two to display at our exhibit. See pg. 3. Our Harness Cleaning and Video Party is coming up on Saturday, March 5 th at the Franktown Fire House so that everyone can get his or her harness clean before the Easter Egg Hunt on March 26th. Call for Carriages & Volunteers To promote Carriage Driving in Colorado, the Colorado Driving Society will have a Carriage Display at the Rocky Mountain Horse Expo March 11, 12 & 13, 2016 National Western Expo Hall at 4655 Humboldt St., Denver, Bring carriages for the display on Thursday March 10 from 9 am - 4 pm. Call Fred Wehrli at to sign up to bring your carriages, and for directions to the back ramp of the Exhibit Hall. Volunteer to staff the display and speak with visitors about carriage driving and our club s activities. Bring your harness, buckets, cleaners, rags and tools and we will share the drudgery and get our harness clean and spiffy for the beginning of the 2016 driving season. C o l o r a d o d r i v i n g s o c i e t y. p b w o r k s. c o m P a g e 5 CDS MEMBER EVENT: EASTER EGG HUNT SATURDAY, MARCH 26 INDIANA EQUESTRIAN PARK ARVADA, CO For One and All, Big and Small CDS Annual Easter Egg Hunt 11 am Saturday, March 26, 2016 (Rain/Snow date April 2) Indiana Equestrian Park 7600 Indiana St, Arvada CO The intent of the Annual Easter Egg Hunt is to have fun, to offer an opportunity for fellow enthusiasts to visit, and to offer a safe environment for our equine partners to refresh themselves after the winter doldrums or for a bit of training. Everyone is welcome to join CDS and enjoy the fun!! How it works: Arrive as early as you like to decorate your carriage and/or horse/pony/mini/mule/burro/children Secure your horse. Sign in (& pay your $25 club dues, if you haven t already.) Get your number tags. Tie one tag to your cart and one to your basket. (or to yourself if you re ground-driving, in which case an apron with a pocket for eggs may be helpful.) 11 am Potluck Brunch Bring your potluck food to the table Bring your own plates, utensils and drink. Join the brunch and socialize! 1:00 Parade Drive your turnout into the arena for the judges. Then proceed directly to the starting line 1:15 THE EASTER EGG HUNT! Line up at the starting line Set down your basket by a cone. When the whistle blows: Drive out into the field to find an egg. STOP. One helper gets down, picks up one egg, and gets back into the carriage. Drive back to your basket at the starting line. STOP. One helper gets down, puts the egg in the basket, & gets back into the carriage. REPEAT steps 1 thru 4 for each egg. After 40 minutes or so, the judge will announce that you may pick up as many eggs as you want. When the whistle blows again: Hand in your basket full of eggs Secure your horse and come to the Pavillion. 2:30 Awards PRIZES Best Turnout (whatever that means) Best Bonnet or Hat Best Egg Finder Locaters of Special Eggs RULES Folks that are too far away for early drop off Come to the Pavilion to see who won prizes! are requested to bring candy filled plastic eggs After the awards have been given out, hard boiled eggs to the Hunt. We will swap these out after may be exchanged for candy-filled plastic eggs. the awards are given. Help clean up and thank the organizers and judges. This is the perfect first drive of the season to remind your horse how to stop, stand, and go! Entries may be any safe cart or carriage hitched to any size equine. No horse? Line driving is also ok. An equine must have a bridle with reins attached and passed through the turrets before it is hitched to a carriage. Helpers must mount and dismount only from STOPPED carriages and carts. Only one helper from your turnout on the ground at a time Walk or trot only, no cantering. Judges are here for fun and to help keep us safe. They are volunteers and their word is final. Please thank them. Drivers please keep yourhelpers out of harm s way. An unruly driver or equine will be invited off the field. EGGS! Please bring eggs! The more eggs we have to hide the more fun we all will have finding them! 6 P a g e 6 D r i v i n g L i n e s M a r c h Ground Driving Clinic Sandy Clayton reports that 16 attended the Ground Driving Clinic on Saturday February 27 at Clayton s Ranch in Kiowa, CO. There were 12 equines: five minis, one pony, a Percheron mule, and five horses attending. We had a lot of learning, laughing and an over-all great time. Jim did a great job teaching, as always. Bob Bartlett was our official photographer.

Here are links to the ones we discussed: CD-L: an open forum for the discussion of all topics relating to the sport of carriage driving. Membership is worldwide, with over 1900 members from Australia, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Japan, The Netherlands, New Zealand, South Africa, and the United States of America. There is absolutely no fee charged for subscribing to CD-L; all you need is an account. It s sort of a cross between a daily newspaper and a group of pen-pals. Link to to sign up. ADS American Driving Society: the rule book, dressage tests, a nationwide trail guide, an awards program, and webinars on various topics. Andy Marcoux s Coachman s Delight: exercises, webinars (Lessons tab, then Online Classes), and articles Videos: There was also interest in videos of the FEI Driving World Cup. These will give you an idea of what a derby is like, though our derbies are much less intense and much slower! Guidelines for organizers, a sample budget, and reimbursement forms are available on the CDS web site. They re on the right hand side in the Documents section below the newsletters. Three months before your event, submit a budget to the CDS event coordinator pat.lamprey@gmail.com. No publicity for an event will be released until 3. Once your budget is approved, please submit a description of the event to the newsletter editor.* Include event title, date, time, location, rain date, fees, organizer, details of the event, closing date for entries & where to send fee & registration. (Please send content with minimal formatting. We ll take care of the layout.) 4. For help recruiting volunteers, contact the volunteer coordinator* with a list of the positions to be filled (set-up, scribe, timer etc.) two months prior to the event 5. After your event, please send results, photos and a report to the newsletter editor.* 6. To be reimbursed by the club for an expense you incur, you must provide a receipt and a CDS reimbursement form, available on the CDS website.
