Wat is die bydrae wat jou merrie toevoeg tot jou vul, is dit 50 persent vir die hings en 50 persent vir die merrie? Sommige reken dit is slegs 40 persent wat jou merrie bedrae...andere reken weer die merrie se bydrae kan so hoog as 60 persent wees en hierdie stelling word suiwer gemaak op observasie. Wat dink jy? Hingste word in die algemeen as die mees belangrike faktor in 'n teelprogram gereken. Indien 'n hings gereeld goeie vullens teel bou hy vinnig 'n reputasie op as 'n goeie teelhings en sodoende styg sy waarde gevolglik. Hingste se nageslag is baie meer gereeld in die openbare oog en die reputasie van die merrie word as minder belangrik gereken. 'n Goeie merrie by 'n onder gemiddelde hings sal jou steeds 'n bruibare tot baie goeie vul gee. Hierdie selde beginsel werk egter nie by 'n swak merrie met 'n goeie hings nie. Temperament tesame met konformasie is krities gekoppel aan die merrie se genetiese struktuur, 'n struktuur wat van generasie tot generasie oorgedra word. Omdat die merrie so 'n belangrike rol in die opvoeding van die vul speel, dra sy alle karaktereienskappe oor, nie slegs voorkoms, gesondheid, temperament en beweging nie, maar selfs klein maniertjies soos kielierigheid, kopsku patrone en selfs haar ongeduldigheid. Dit is gevaarlik vir enige teler om die geweldige invloed wat die merrie op die vul het te misken, merries se invloed op hul vullens strek tot selfs ses generasies ver terug. Meeste telers is slegs ingestel op hulle teelhingste en ontken die belangrikheid van die vroulike dier. 'n Baie belangrike teelbeginsel wat nooit ooit vergeet mag word nie is dat jou teelbeleid moet berus op een fout op 'n slag. Klink eenvoudig maar dit is alles behalwe. Interressant genoeg was ek aan die einde van verlede jaar in die bevoorregte posisie om 'n paar dae saam met ons Amerikaanse gaste deur te bring en dit was een van die punte wat hulle telkemale benadruk het...een fout op 'n slag! Telers moet elke merrie in sy kudde goed bestudeer vir haar positiewe eienskappe asook vir haar swakker punte. Daarna selekteer jy die hings wat hierdie swak punte kan verbeter. Wanneer ek weet wat die merrie se swak punte is maak ek seker dat dit nie ook die hings se swak punte is nie maar dat hy wel op hierdie punte kan verbeter Jy leer deur ervaring. Jy leer wat om te verwag van sekere hings- en merriekombinasies. Dit kan ook gebeur dat 'n sekere kombinasie glad nie die vul gooi wat jy verwag nie maar iets totaal anders. Probeer jy dieselfde kombinasie weer in die toekoms en hierdie keer kry jy presies wat jy verwag en voor gehoop het. 1

2 Teling is 'n lang termyn projek. Jy moet lang termyn doelwitte stel. Om goeie konformasie met korrekte gesonde vullens te teel is die mikpunt. Teling is nooit kort termyn nie, jy kan baie min karakter eienskappe vasle in twee generasies. Teling beteken om in terme van generasies te dink. 'n Teler moet presies weet wat hy/sy probeer bereik met sy teelprogram en ook hoe hy hierdie doelwit gaan bereik. Daarna moet jy as teler tyd en geduld aan die dag le en ook gewillig wees om deur jou foute te leer. Teling is 'n komplekse, lang en stadige proses. Om jou teeldiere se genetiese samestelling te verstaan kan die grootste wapen in jou arsenaal wees in jou strewe om die kampioen miniatuurperd te teel. Alhoewel beide diere se bydrae waardevol is, is daar besig om 'n versigtige skuif te gebeur wat al hoe meer klem plaas op die belangrikheid van jou moederlyn. PASSPORTS. HOY FEEDBACK. Darrell and Arina Petit wrote to the SAMHBS and highlighted the achievements of their SA Miniature stallion Hart E Deago. They asked to please post the letter below in our newsletter. RE: ACCOMPLISHMENT HORSE OF THE YEAR SHOW KYALAMI EQUESTRIAN PARK Hi All, It is with great pride and pleasure that we would like to inform you of our results at the Horse of the Year Show held at Kyalami Equestrian Park. Saturday was the judging of the Miniature Horses and we think that this was a great success. It is apparent that the quality of our Miniature Horses has improved tremendously and the working classes (obstacle, jumping & driving) were a pleasure to watch. We also think that the interest shown by the younger handlers has also increased substantially and at the end of the day they will be the ones that will ensure the future of our breed. The sizes of the classes have also increased by leaps and bounds and this is also a very positive sign of growth in our sport. The proceedings ran smoothly and there were no major hiccups to speak of. We would like to say a big thank you to the show organizing committee, judges and all involved (whose efforts so often go unappreciated) in making the show such a big success. 4

5 Our stallion Hart-E-Deago was Grand Champion Stallion and Supreme Champion Miniature Horse on Show and our mare Options Aplenty was Grand Champion Mare on Show. This made it necessary for us to take part in the Interbreed Class on Sunday with both horses. Pre-judging started at 8.15am and everyone had to be back in the Bob Charter arena at 2.00pm for the prize giving. There was really a strong contention of all the Supreme Champions (stallions & mares) of all the different breeds that had participated in the show (approximately 40 horses). To our great surprise Deago was Reserve Champion Interbreed on Show and was obviously the best stallion on the show as the Champion was a Friesian mare. We were totally overjoyed with this achievement and feel that the Miniature Horse Breed in South Africa has now proved that our horses can, quality and conformation wise, compete with the best in the country. We are definitely not so naïve to think that this achievement was only as a result of our own efforts and would like to thank and acknowledge the following; Coralezet and Chris from Hart-E-Miniature Stud for breeding Deago and selling him to us. Carol and Muiren Kok for their valuable contribution in producing Deago, forming the start of his showing career and for all their advice and help that they still give us. The Miniature Horse Society and Management who have helped the breed grow from strength to strength over the years. All the Breeders in South Africa who have through years of planning and breeding, produced such wonderful horses. Of course to all the Miniature horses out there who have enriched our lives and given us so much joy and who expect so little in return. My wife Arina, who looks after the horses, turns them all out so beautifully and shows them so well. I trust that this achievement may be the motivation to all breeders and owners and that our sport may continue to grow and develop in the future. Die Genootskap vra dat alle telers ons by staan en die Stamboek per kapita lyste noukeurig nagaan om seker te maak dat al die perde wat op die lyste is daar moet wees en ook om seker te maak dat al die perde wat julle in julle stoet geregestreer will he daar reflekteer. Dit is belangrik dat hierdie lyste korrek is en ons kan net verseker hulle is akuraat met die bystand en hulp van die telers self. Onthou in die nabeie toekoms gaan ons skou inskrywing ook op LOGIX doen en perde wat nie daar volledig gereflekteer word nie sal nie deur LOGIX kan inskryf nie. Die besluit was dat brandstof aan die keurder betaal word teen die helfte van die heersende brandstof prys en ons het nou deurgegee dat die koste R3.50 per km beloop. We note that the numbers of registrations are down on other years in spite of the fact that the numbers of mares have increased. Other breeds are also experiencing this phenomenon. This matter has been taken up by breed societies as a whole with Department of vet nary Science. The responses and progress is slow and the outcome uncertain. We request members to continue reporting the birth of their foals to the society and in the hope of a positive outcome they will have the benefits of registration. DNA Both paternal and maternal DNA is now a requirement for the registration of a foal. This requirement has been implemented over a period of years starting with the DNA of stallions being a requirement and later introducing the DNA of mares. This gives certainty as to the genetic makeup of a foal and is important in giving buyers of horses the comfort of knowing what they are procuring. More importantly it adds value to our registration papers and ultimately to the value of our horses. If foal recordals are not accompanied by DNA results from a recognised lab then the registration will become pending and will not be completed till the required results are received.
