1 The Sportsman Published by The Tacoma Sportsmen s Club President s Report BY GARY HIGGINBOTHAM, PRSIDNT October 2017 Volume 834, Issue 10 During our September Club Meeting, I appointed the Nominating Committee for the election of Officers in January. Last year many positions including mine were unopposed. Please consider nominating qualified candidates that will work towards improving the club for all. Our specialty events are over until December. All ranges will be open without interruption throughout the. will run Friday through Monday into the third week of October. We still need volunteers to help our RSO s on the ranges. Sign up in the office or in the book at the Public Rifle Range, check the dates and see if you can t donate some time. If you need to sight in don t wait, get in early. The procrastinators tend to overwhelm the ranges. Once again, good luck to the Hunters. I haven t heard of much success from our Archers. The Bragging Board is clear and ready for this year s pictures so feel free to brag. Hopefully the new found fall weather will help. GNRAL MMBRSHIP MTING BY RICHARD FRIL, PAST PRSIDNT If you missed this month s meeting you missed an excellent program. Mark Lindquist the Pierce County prosecuting attorney was our guest speaker. He presented what is going on in Pierce County and the programs that are in place to fight gangs, abuse and drugs. He also had a question and answer period and fielded questions on a large range of topics. Thank you, Mr. Lindquist, for a wonderful program. I would also like to thank Greg Hartman and Glen Roderick for arranging this program, good job guys. Next month s program is still in the works so stay tuned for further news. 3 SPTMBR 6TH MTING RVIW On September 6 th Mark Lindquist was our guest speaker and here is a short synopsis of what he covered. One of the programs started in Pierce county is the High Priority Offender program. This program targets repeat offenders and those with prior felonies and prison sentences. The question asked was what about the three strikes system and we were told not all felonies count towards the three strikes. With the HPO program they are able to track these repeat offenders and get longer prison sentences. Mark also covered adult abuse here in Pierce county and how they are addressing it. He covered aspects of abuse as to who are at risk, what elder abuse is, and what to do if abuse is suspected. He also covered types of abuse like neglect, financial, emotional and physical/ sexual abuse. It was eye opening to note on this aspect that family members are often the cause. The county drug problem was also covered and like most of the country we have the same problem. Drugs lead to break-in s, homelessness and usual street crimes. As always, these crimes get high priority. There was a question and answer period on the topics of when it is ok to shoot if you carry with a conceal carry permit, home invasions if they are in your house, don't shoot if they are outside, is it ok to shoot if you are helping a neighbor. Most of the answers made sense but the real eye opener is how you respond to police questions. All in all, it was an informative program. Richard Friel, past president SIGHT-IN DAYS AR HR! The time 9am-5pm The dates are as follows: Sept 22, 23, 24 & 26 Sept 28, 29, 30, Oct 1 Oct 6, 7,8, 9 Oct 13, 14, 15, 16 Volunteers are NDD. Sign up in the office. 3 If you are going to sight-in your hunting rifles and/or pistols go DIRCTLY to the range to do so. The office will be open for all others.
