Good Day Everyone, I hope everyone s holidays were joyful. President s Message We are starting a new year at LOL and a few things are changing. We have listened to the desires of our membership and I am excited to inform you that we are going to be incorporating access to the club house and indoor range for members to use and enjoy archery at their leisure. The Board is still working out the fine details of the new indoor access policy and will be finalizing it at our February board meeting. This is a big step let s make this work. All members will receive the info soon in their , in the Bowmen or in their membership renewal packets. If not please contact me or someone from the board. Don t forget we are going to have a rabbit hunt on Saturday Feb 2 nd This is a members only event and you must have valid small game license as well as a waiver must be signed day of hunt. We have not done this in many years and hopefully this will be a tradition we continue down the road. Keep in mind our open shooting leagues are starting up as we begin this year. Thursday night league is from 7 till 9 and our Sunday open shoot are from 1 to 4. This is a great way to test your equipment if you made any changes and have a good time shooting the bow and arrow. Please bring a guest. We love seeing new faces at the club. The kid s league started up in the beginning of January with a whopping success. I think this is the best league to be a part of. Watching the children learn and excel the proper techniques of using a bow and arrow is just fantastic and hear warming. We really enjoy watching their passion start to form. If anyone is

interested in helping out on coaching the kids on Monday nights please contact myself or Ken Scollick. I would like to thank Randy Duncan for stepping up and helping the board with the secretary position. He did an exceptional job in the past and I know the future will not be any different. This is not an easy task to do. Also I would like to thank Jeff Woods V.P and Billy Hoffman Social Media Director for hooking up our new surveillance system for the club. This was partly done to get ready for the opening of the club to members after hours as well as to generally protect the club in other cases of liability. FOR THE GOOD OF THE CLUB!! 5 Secretary Summary Randy Duncan Recording Secretary Hello All, I hope everyone had great hunting and holiday seasons and is looking forward to First off, I would like to thank the Board for letting me take some time off from the Secretary position so I could get some things squared away in my life. Now that things are back to normal, I appreciate them voting me back into the position and thank you to all of the members that stepped up to help out when I was gone. Reminder we will be having elections again this year so if you are interested in helping improve your club please think about running for a Board position. If you have any questions, please feel free to , call me or ask one of the Board Members because we are always willing to talk. Board meetings are the first Tuesday of every month inside the clubhouse at 7 pm. Please make in a point to come to the meeting and find out what is happening at YOUR club. You get 2 hrs toward your work hours for every meeting you attend so that is plus right there. I will tell you that 2019 appears to be a year of great things to come for our club. Now that we are into the new year I hope to see you all out to the club for the weekly and monthly shoots. Please stop me if you we are at the club to say hi and let me know what we can do to improve the club or what you love about Land-O-Lakes. Happy Shooting to you all, Randy Duncan Recording Secretary Land-O-Lakes Bowmen cell: rvrbnk@gmail.com

Greetings to all Land O Lakes members, Youth Archery 2019 I hope your new year is going well. Our club will be starting our leagues and programs for 2019 very soon. Our winter youth sessions will begin on Monday Jan. 14 th. We will only be having one session beginning at 6:00 pm. Your help is requested. We have a pretty good crew that has been with the program for a while but it would be good to see more members involved. This program brings in a good bit of revenue that is vital to the operation of your club. The sessions usually run about 1 ½ hours and is really a lot of fun helping introduce kids to our sport. This is also a great way to get your work hours that are part of your club membership and get to know some of the other members. Let Ken Scollick know that you will be there (248)

New Tactics in an Age Old Tradition Billy Hoffman Director and Social Media / Marketing Manager As archers I often feel there is a piece of our DNA that is somewhat different than the rest of the world. Heck, I even feel that we stand out in a group when lumped in with other hunters. There is an extra primal urge in those of us who choose to pursue our quarry with the stick and string. From its inception, archery has relied on technology to fuel its advancements. Yes one can still harvest game with cedar arrows and stone knapped heads. However for the majority of our brethren, technology has helped grow our tradition. One could list the massive jumps in archery advancement that have taken place over the centuries but I am confident that most reading this will understand the history behind how we got here. After all names like Saxton Pope, Fred Bear, Howard Hill and Chuck Adams are not easily forgotten. As a modern day archer I have bounced back and forth between longbow, recurve and compounds. Personally I have never been an all-in kind of guy. I like to dabble. I ve often thought that bows are like pizzas, I want to try them all and there is something good about each one. So regardless of what type of arrow projecting apparatus you choose to don this season, I have decided to share with you how cellular trail cameras are the biggest technological advance that has changed the way I spend time in the woods. I remember an old high school football coach telling me The eye in the sky never lies. Of course, he was referring to our analysis of Friday night s game film yet the phrase applies just as much to us as archers. If you are not familiar with cellular trail cameras and the technology they possess here is a very brief breakdown. A cellular trail camera is a battery or solar powered camera that is placed in the woods. The camera has motion-detecting capabilities and when triggered will snap a picture and send that picture wirelessly to a device of your choosing.

I have done loads of research in regards to these cameras and decided to use models from a company called Spypoint. Before I get into the specifics of why I chose this brand over others I would like to tell you why I made the switch to cellular cameras to begin with. I am a firm believer of many things in life. Two of these things happen to be, Time is Money and Pressure Saves Bucks. Care to guess which of these two is actually about currency? Time is Money. Now this may be a little misleading because I don t mean to say that I am making money every moment I am not in the woods. However, I have found now with cellular cameras deployed I very rarely have to enter my best hunting spots. This is less gas money spent traveling to and from the locations. Less money spent on buying multiple memory cards and then switching them in and out every so often. While the cameras do cost more upfront, for me as a husband and father of two young future hunters the time savings defray that cost. Pressure Saves Bucks. Above I mentioned that thanks to my cellular cameras I do not need to enter my hunting spots as often. This means less pressure and human presence on my properties and this is a good thing. The less time spent not hunting the better. Educating bucks saves bucks lives and I am in the business of taking buck s lives. One might say this comes at a cost of less time spent in the out of doors though. I strongly disagree because I now spend more time in other areas. I have personally found, hiked and scouted out almost every inch of public land available to me within twenty miles of my home and I never feel like I am missing out thanks to my Spypoint cameras keeping me informed of what is happening in my prime areas. The particular camera I chose to run in my setups this year is the Spypoint Link Evo. At $249 The Link Evo serves as their baseline model for cellular cameras and I am so happy with them that I can t imagine how nice it would be to have their upgraded models. I won t overload you with the technical specifications of the unit other than to say it takes great pictures and video in both day and night. I have found the battery usage to be fantastic and their upgraded models even have a solar panel on the top to extend battery life. However, what makes Spypoint shine when it comes to cellular cameras is the cellular part. All their models are available in both Verizon and Sprint versions. Please read this next sentence carefully, and then read it again. It does not matter what carrier you use for your personal cell phone, you pick which model camera

to buy based on the best coverage for the area in which you want to place it. I personally have the Verizon versions. Out of fear that I wouldn t have strong coverage up north where even my phone does not work I utilized Spypoint s extended antennae and had pictures of deer sent to my phone before I crossed back over the bridge on my way home. Spypoint s data plans are also the best in the business. Upon buying the unit you will need to download their free application to your smart phone or log into their website on a computer. One other thing about the app that is neat is that it serves as your entire dashboard and operating system from the camera. No more clicking random buttons and navigating difficult menus on tiny screens. The app has it all laid out and a plethora of options can be changed with the swipe of a finger or click of the mouse. If you can send a text message you can run your Spypoint. Upon activating camera, you will be given one month of free unlimited pictures. After your month expires you will enter the free plan, which includes one hundred pictures a month. $5 gets you two-hundred and fifty pictures but trust me, the $15 unlimited plan will most likely be your favorite choice, as it has quickly become mine. While I am talking a lot about these cameras, I honestly am not doing them justice. I strongly suggest you do some research on your own and start with Spypoint. I am confident that is where your research will come to an end as well. There are two more reasons why I strongly feel that cellular cameras are a great piece in everyone s repertoire. Theft and security may seem a little out of the ordinary however my Spypoint cellular cameras aid in reducing theft while increasing security. Yes, $249 is a lot of money to leave out in the woods. I take solace in knowing that since the camera is cellular, if someone decides to money

with it or steal it, I most likely will have pics of them on my phone before they can exit the woods. Furthermore since the camera is 100% controlled from the app if they do decide to steal it, it is useless to them. Once I report it as stolen by clicking a button in the app Spypoint will not activate it for another user. Lastly, I mentioned security. My cellular cameras when not deployed to look for deer are placed on my property. I use them to monitor multiple doors to my house and the interior of my garage. If I am lying in bed and someone is sneaking onto my back porch, Spypoint lets me know. Likewise if I am lying in bed and the buck of a lifetime works a mock scrape I have set up, Spypoint lets me know. When it comes to new technologies I strongly encourage you to keep an open mind and think about how they can help you both inside the woods and in everyday life. Just remember that time is money, pressure saves bucks and the eye in the sky never lies. ~ Bill Hoffman

Field Captain s Quarters Cory Franks Field Captain I have discovered a very worthy opponent out in the woods and every fall I get several encounters with him. And usually a few chances to send an arrow his way. I am always reminded, very quickly; of how keen his instincts are while witnessing him bound away without harm after I have loosed that arrow in his direction. I am left to sit in shame while scratching my head wondering exactly how he dodged another one. I can only tip my cap and hope that he doesn't warn the rest of the woods of my presence. I have found myself in very close proximity to this beast. Sometimes close enough to reach out and grab him bare handed. But every time, as quickly as the thought enters my imagination, I remember just how fast his reflexes are. So I wait in silent stillness. Figuratively crossing my fingers in hope that he will unknowingly putter along and reach a point where I can take the shot that will reach its mark as quickly as it needs to. That opportunity almost never comes to fruition. At other times, I have chosen to take my shot before he gets within such a distance that he may be able to hear or see my bow cast its projectile destined to finally end this war that I have waged. I have tried as many as 35 yards out with the thought that at that great distance there is no possible way he can see or hear my equipment do its job. With every attempt, time slows to a creep as I watch the arrow arc in perfect route to its destination just a fraction of a second too late.

Thus far, his instincts have been far superior to my bow hunting ability. The Red Squirrel, while not often found on the trophy list of very many hunters, is my aforementioned formidable foe. He is not at the top of my dream tag list, or even close to it for that matter. But over the past few hunting seasons he has earned my respect. I have heard from others that the "red" is not nearly as tasty as its larger cousins in the Sciuridae family, the Fox and Grey squirrels. And I dont imagine that he offers up much in the way of sustenance being that he is so small. However, there is much to be said for the spoils of victory and I am certain that when I finally taste these spoils, I will not be let down. Until this challenge is met, I will continue to regard him as a very strong opponent in my hunting endeavors.
