2 President s Message Good Day All, Spring is here finally, but you would not know it from the weather we have been having lately. Old Man winter just will not let it go. As your new acting President, I will do my very best with the help of our board of directors and members of Land-O-Lakes Bowmen to keep the clubs best interest first and foremost. I would also like to thank everyone who came out to our first work party of the year on April 7 th. This work party made our first shoot of the year a success. Saturday and Sunday total we had 63 shooters. Not bad considering the weather we had. I am very proud of everyone involved, truly. Our next work party will be April 28 th at 9:00 am. To help get the club ready for our hosting of the MLA Spring Shoot. This is a great event for our club, and a great opportunity for you to get in some needed work hours. On an ending note, Enjoy the beauty of teaching a child the joy of shooting archery. It will last a lifetime. THEY ARE OUR FUTURE. Bill Faber President Land-O-Lakes Bowmen

Regular 3D Shoots May July 8 August 19 September 9 Details for all regular 3D Shoots: $10.00 for non-members, $9.00 with MBH discount. $8.00 for members, $5.00 for Seniors (60+) $20.00 Family Deal - 2 adults (16 and older) and kids in their home (15 and younger.) Children 12 and under are free Registration 8:00am to 3:00 pm Kitchen open all day Practice Range open Targets range from 10 to 40 yds. 5 Youth Archery Registration open Our Spring / Summer 2018 Youth Archery Program is now accepting registrations! We will only be accepting 50 shooters for this session so we suggest you register ASAP. All registrations and payments will be taken in advance. (No week to week payments.) 6 2018 MBH Pheasant Hunt LOL's own, Lance DeVooght has--for the second year running--shown that a shotgun is not the only way to bag pheasants. Four archers attended the Michigan Bow Hunter s, District 6, Annual Archery Pheasant Hunt, at Walkiewicz Pheasant Farm on March 31st. The group took 11 pheasants with traditional bows in a half day field hunt.

9 Finding Love in Carp Slime Social Media Director Bill Hoffman The hum of the ultraquiet generator was the only sound as we skimmed along the surface of Lake Fenton. Bow in hand we navigated the early spring channels in search of the illusive Blue Back Dolphin Carp. Now of course I realize that most of you at this point have figured me for a fool in regards to their being no such subspecies of fish. However one only says that if they have never been on this lake, at this time of the year. It is strange the first time you see these bottom feeding monsters of spring. They truly are impressive. Weighing between 15 and 50 pounds for some reason the carp in this particular lake often have a blueish green tint to their back. And their early season behavior is not unlike the purposing action of a dolphin. Hence the nickname, The Blue Back Dolphin Carp. While the night had been slower than we had hoped it was still considered a success. For some reason I had made contact with almost every fish I drew back on. This feat being a rarity for me. Bow fishing looks easy, and admittedly sometimes it is, however more times than not our prey escapes with nothing more than an arrow darting over their back. This particular trip was special to me as it was the maiden voyage for my now wife but then girlfriend. A funny thing happens when someone views the night s illuminated water for the first time. The sense of looking upon nature s aquarium is a special one. Something veteran carp slayers often take for granted. Not her though. I enjoyed listening to her excitement at the scores of bait fish, bass, pike, and turtles as we cruised on by.

10 You are really good at this babe, She said as I drove an arrow into the soft sand pinning a nice bowfin down. To this day I still remember the sense of pride I felt swell upon hearing her say those words. As 3 am rolled along the fishing had slowed down even further, we turned my boat around and headed back towards the public launch. Fishing along the way we were able to pick up a few shots here and there but nothing major. Just as I was getting ready to set my gear down, pull up the trolling motor and start the main motor I saw it. Big and blue, the darn thing had its own wake. The Blue Back that we had been in search of all night. The Blue Back that up until this very moment she did not believe existed. The Loch Ness Monster of Lake Fenton was now a mere 20 yards off the bow of my boat, just on the edge of the lights. With a weak battery I cranked the trolling throttle down and we made up some distance on the dolphin. Then, as big fish tend to do, it vanished. It amazed all of us that something that size could just dive in 4 feet of water and be gone. Turning the motor off we stayed silent on the hunt and the strategy paid off. Up came the fish in a puff of sand out of the weed bed and my arrow found its mark just behind the gill plate. I struggled fighting the fish as he thrashed with power. I worried that he would get off and I was not relieved until I had him in the boat. Are you ready for the moment of true love? I loosed the arrow tip and flung the beast towards the large fish bucket where it hit the rim, slid across and went air born. You know those moments that happen in slow motion, this was one of them. The 30 pound fish impacted my wife s chest, knocking her to her butt on a boat floor that resembled that of a butcher. Cold, wet, covered in contents of the night s successful hunt my wife just looked at me. I knew it was time to go home, but I also knew at that moment, I had found love in carp slime. PS Thanks to her, the fish stayed in the boat.
