10 Hunting Rifle Getting a much needed break in the otherwise rainy weather forecast, 22 shooters converged on the RBGC High Power Range for the March Hunting Rifle Match. A host of regular to the venue shooters helped welcome several new to the event shooters including Matt Tucker (pictured with target), Hunter Howell, and Tom Hollingsworth. Tom typically shoots High Power Match s and was taking the opportunity to gain additional practice with his.303 Lee-Enfield. For those of you who typically shoot High Power (or F-class) the Hunting Rifle match whether held on the HP or SL range, is an excellent opportunity to gain additional practice across the course. Shooter Matt Tucker brought his new 6.5 x.284 Savage F-class and posted an excellent target. This was Matt s first time shooting the rifle past 100 yards and the results speak for themselves. Well done Matt! First squad preparing to shoot the 600 yard line (above) and Matt Tucker pictured with rifle and target (below). Many of our regular shooters also posted excellent targets, including posted excellent targets including Craig Guinn, Chris Vanairsdale, Matt Gravely, Tyler Rattz, and Scott Miklavich. It s easy to look back and see how as a group and as individuals, just how much improvement we ve seen over time. Practice really does make a difference! If you re not familiar with the Hunting Rifle venue at RBGC, our objective is to assist hunters and shooters in developing the skills and knowledge required to accurately place shots at distance. The venue is non-competitive (your shooting against yourself) and range officers are available to assist with shooting technique, sight adjustments and target spotting. We typically rotate from the High Power range to the Silhouette range every 3rd month. For the matches held on the High Power range we offer NRA Bullseye, multi-bull Diamond and NRA life-size animal (deer/bear) targets. For matches on the SL range we offer a mix of 6, 8, and 10 inch steel plates. For more information please visit the Hunting Rifle venue page. Whether you re preparing for an upcoming hunt, competitive match, or simply wish to develop or polish your shooting skills, come join us for our next match on Saturday, May 19th on the High Power (HP) range. 11 NRA Light Rifle The opening of the 2018 RBGC NRA Light Rifle program saw gray skies moderate temperatures and still winds despite the dire predictions of the weather man. A total of 11 competitors were on hand to start the season including three new faces. New shooter Bob Morris started the match at a blistering pace by firing a 95 in his first stage, with George Wilson not far behind posting a 92 1X. In the second stage, Mark Dorlay fired a 93 to move into first, one shot ahead of King Stracke, two shots ahead of Wilson, and three shots ahead of Match Director Simon Bailey. In the third stage, Stracke s 91 1X enabled him to take a one point lead over Wilson, who led Dorlay by a point, who led Bailey by a point. Stracke extended his lead two additional point in the fourth stage. Dorlay moved into a tie with Wilson for second, and Bailey sat two behind them, waiting for his opportunity. A 93 2X in the fifth stage separated Wilson from Dorlay. Wilson moved to within one point of Stracke. Dorlay himself fired a 92, staying in the hunt. In the sixth and final stage, Stracke stumbled, providing an opening. Both Wilson and Dorlay fired 92s. This enabled Wilson to capture the tournament by a single point with Dorlay taking second and Stracke placing third. Bailey, meanwhile, slammed closed a nebulous opening he had offered to capture the Sharpshooter Classification. Beth Reynolds, using her new Savage rifle, started very well, but dropped slightly in the later stages of the match. The rust of Winter was definitely impacting usually reliable competitors, but that did not stop Don Coleman from taking the Marksman Classification. The three new competitors, Bob Morris, Jeff Bolles, and John Martin all fired in the Master Classification. Morris 95 set the stage and after a slight hiccup in the third stage, he shot consistently to place as first Master, followed by Bolles who also shot consistently until the final two stages took their toll. Martin, after a shaky start, showed consistent improvement over the course of the match and will likely be a force to be reckoned with next month. Congratulations to all winners; full match results are available on the website on the match results page. The next Light Rifle match will be on Sunday May the 6th with first shot downrange at 9:30 AM. The match will be an any sight 60 shot match fired at 50 ft. We look forward to seeing you here. By Brad Reynolds 11

12 Smallbore F-Class Competition You probably know that River Bend has smallbore rifle prone matches, but did you know our matches now include F- Class? F-Class is shot from a prone position, but instead of using a sling for support, you use a front rest or bipod in the front and a rear support such as a sandbag. If you have a.22 LR rifle capable of being single-loaded, a bipod, and a sandbag, you can shoot F-Class. 12 F-Class competitors shoot alongside sling competitors and shoot at the same distances. F-Class has been part of highpower rifle competition for many years but only recently became part of smallbore competition. The rules governing smallbore F-Class are set forth at pp of the NRA Smallbore Rifle Rules. Briefly, one must use.22 LR ammunition only. The total weight of the rifle and anything attached to it (for example, a scope and a bipod) can t exceed lbs. If you re using a front rest, it doesn t count toward the weight limit. The rules require that rifles be loaded with only one cartridge at a time, so single-loading is required and cartridges cannot be fed through a magazine. Semi-automatic rifles may be used provided that you can single-load and not feed through the magazine. Under the NRA rules, there are two types of F-Class rifles. F-Class Open rifles are rested on a front rest, and F-Class Target Rifles use a bipod. In our club matches we put both types of rifles into one class for awards purposes. Most of our club matches are not NRA-sanctioned, but twice this year (May and September 22-23) we will have two-day NRA-sanctioned matches. For a typical 160-record-shot match, you ll want to bring at least 200 rounds of ammunition to make sure you have enough for sighters. You can use aperture sights if you wish, but people always use scopes because the targets are challenging. If you want to be able to see your bullet holes through your riflescope, you ll need one capable of resolving a.22 cal. hole in a black target at distances of 50 to 100 yards. You can also bring a spotting scope to help you see your bullet holes, and life will be easier if you can mount the spotting scope close to the ground. You ll be laying on a concrete pad, so you ll want a shooting mat, sleeping bag pad, or something else to cushion you. Our match schedule is on the website under Smallbore Rifle Prone. Registration opens at 8:00 a.m. and first shots are at 9:00 a.m. The matches are held at the new.22 Rimfire Rifle Range. If you have any questions, please Dave Rabin at smallbore@rbgc.org. ---Dave Rabin

13 Attention Ladies: Do you want to learn to shoot a pistol safely? River Bend Gun Club has hosted NRA Women on Target Pistol Clinics for many years. The purpose of the clinics is to provide women with a hands-on introduction to the safe handling and proper use of pistols. In the morning session, An NRA certified, female Instructor provides a thorough introduction to firearm safety, handling firearms and shooting skills in the Gene Mowell Conference Center. In the past, some of the ladies in the all-female classes have asked many excellent questions, so time permitting, we may also discuss selecting a pistol, safe storage options, cleaning a firearm, and club membership. The club provides a delicious lunch and then we re off to the Bullseye Pistol Range. At the range, each woman is paired with an experienced club volunteer who coaches her first shots. We shoot.22 semi-automatic pistols and revolvers at colorful targets. Each woman takes about 25 shoots working on the shooting fundamentals. The NRA provides souvenir bags that include an NRA New Shooter Guide, Come Join Us booklet and eye and ear protection. The club also provides ammunition and targets at no charge and the volunteer coaches provide their personal firearms for participant use. When not on the firing line, we provide information about future opportunities for women at the club and through NRA classes. See the flyer on the following page for more details. Pre-registration is required and the clinic is limited to 30 participants. Please sign up now! The next clinic is Saturday, May 12th from 9 am to 3 pm. So, for $15, what are you waiting for?
