3 Gun Lucky for us, the weather was kind and we had 29 shooters brave the difficult July 3 Gun course of fire. The fun started with set up on Friday under mild temperatures and spilled over to the main event on Saturday. July featured many small distant targets and lots of penalty no shoot targets. It was a definite test of who could shoot and not just shoot fast. Skills with rifle, pistol, and shotgun were put to the test! The dreaded spinner made an appearance as well as buckshot and slug targets. At the end of the day, there were lots of smiles and people that left better than when they arrived. Stay tuned for the September match that returns to the AP Bays. September will bring 6 stages with lots of steel and will be a great opportunity for PCC shooters to get their carbines out!!! 4 (Continued on page 5)

Action Pistol JULY 15, 2017 On Saturday, July 15, fifty shooters turned out for our July Action Pistol match. The rain held off and it turned out to be a beautiful day. Bay 1 was the Star and Steel stage. This stage required a total of 30 rounds ; 13 rounds were required on the free standing steel, another 12 shots to knock down all the plates and bowling pins, and another 5 plates had to be knocked off the Texas Star. Bay 2 was the Sniper stage. Each shooter was required to start sitting in a chair with their gun braced on the sandbags and aimed at the heads (steels plates) downrange one shot was allowed for each. The shooter then moved through the doorway and followed the pathway shooting all targets as they became visible. Bay 3 was the Undercover Brother stage. This stage required the shooter to start at the table with gun unloaded, action open, and one magazine on the table. At the buzzer, the shooter had to flip one of four cards to identify the undercover cop, then load their pistol. The shooter then moved left and stomped the activator and had to engage the spinner and two stationary IPSC targets with two rounds each. The shooter then was required to move to several different positions which required shooting through open portals to hit each target. The last position required you to rescue the undercover cop that was identified at the start table by shooting the 3 bad guys through any portal of the wall. 6 (Continued on page 7)

Hunter Rifle May/June, 2017 Shooting season is in full swing with typical summer weather on RBGC s rifle ranges. In May, Hunting Rifle met on the Silhouette range with 30 shooters in attendance. Breaking into squads of 6 to 8 shooters each, each squad advanced through a selection of 6, 8, and 10 inch steel plates set at distances of 200, 300, 385 and 500 meters. The resounding ding of bullets striking steel echoed across the line as shooters quickly found their mark. Shooting on the Silhouette range is always a popular venue, the opportunity to shoot steel and the instant feedback it provides is a great benefit in introducing younger or newer shooters to shooting at distance. Of particular benefit is the course of fire which allows newer shooters to advance through the various distances as skills develop, and it s common to see couples shooting together and parents attending with young adults on a regular basis. For the June and July matches, Hunting Rifle returned to the High Power range with 18 shooters attending the June match and 26 attending the July match. Shooters Matt Gravely and Ben Barger hone their skills on the Silhouette range. Breaking into squads, shooters rotated from the target pits to the 200, 300, and 600 yard firing lines. During our June match, shooters Joe Bougard (7mm-08 Ackley) and Craig Guinn (6.5 CM) once again turned in impressive targets. For the matches held on the High Power range the NRA 300 yard bullseye target is most popular, however we also offer a multi-bull Diamond and NRA life-size animal (deer/bear) targets. If you re not familiar with the Hunting Rifle venue at RBGC, our objective is to assist hunters and shooters in developing the skills and knowledge required to accurately place shots at distance. The venue is non-competitive (your shooting against yourself) and range officers are available to assist with shooting technique, sight adjustments and target spotting. We typically rotate from the High Power range to the Silhouette range every 3rd month. For more information please visit the Hunting Rifle venue page at Whether you re preparing for an upcoming hunt or simply wish to develop your shooting skills, come join us for our next match on Saturday, August 19th on the Silhouette range. 11 NRA Light Rifle State Championship Match Brad Reynolds Alrighty then! I was too late for last month s publication. So I can safely say that it was THE VERY BEST match report that has ever been written. Seriously. If there were a Pulitzer Prize for shooting write-ups, last month s report was a shoe-in. How about that State Championship? We move from 50 miles... er... yards, back to 50 feet. Stated differently, in June I couldn t decide whether I was the reincarnation of Sisyphus (he who was subject to an impossible task) or the mischievous target genies really were doing an Irish jig every time I pulled the trigger. So it seemed like the move back to 50 feet would be a cake walk. But nooooo. We added an additional 20 rounds for score, making this partly an endurance test. Gawd do I love this sport! Weather-wise, we ve seen it all for the July match. It has ranged from unusually cool to unmercifully hot. This year fell into the more temperate conditions, cool, cloudy and humid. While there was a short period of light drizzle, the serious rain stayed away. While several of the usual competitors were absent (the National Matches at Camp Perry are, as far as I am concerned, a legitimate excuse -- but for various exigencies that have occurred the last three years, I too would be there), this match we welcomed four new competitors, three women, and several folk who are becoming regulars! Enough waffle! Mister King Stracke started strong with a 91-1X to take a lead that he would never give up, even with an uncharacteristic 83 in the fifth stage. Stracke won the match and is the Georgia Light Rifle Champion for Congrats, King! If you keep this up, we will have to rechristen you Emperor. Stracke received a challenge early on from Brad Reynolds, but that quickly tapered off as the extended duration of the match took its toll. More interesting were the scores of newcomer Brad Gerrells and Tom Hollingsworth. Apart from the first and third stages where he shot an 80, Gerrells, a newcomer, shot an 85 or above. This consistency enabled him to take second place overall. In addition, Gerrells had the second highest number of bulls. Well done, Sir! Well done. Tom Hollingsworth had an exceptional day as well. He seems to have caught fire of late, and he claimed the highest number of bulls for the match. His consistency, albeit within a slightly higher spread, earned him first Marksman and fourth overall. Ethan and Craig Wood, our newest father-son duo, was a gem to watch. Son Ethan took a significant lead in the first stage, which he extended in the second. By the fourth stage, Craig had shrunk the lead to 1 point. He took the lead in the fifth stage (Continued on page 12) 11

NRA Light Rifle (Continued from page 11) and after six round had opened it up significantly. However, the target Leprechauns intervened in the seventh round, moving the target each and every time he pulled the trigger. Ethan outscored dad by four in the eighth and final stage to take the Wood Cup, and be crowned the Georgia State Junior Light Rifle champion. Congratulations Ethan! Among the women, we were pleased to see the return of Miss Octavia Hall and the advent of Mrs. Katie Ellis, the sister of Beth Reynolds. Octavia, firing in the sub junior category, certainly lived up to her historically famous namesake (the older sister of the first Roman emperor and matriarch of numerous other Roman emperors. See, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/octavia_the_younger) Young lady, we hope and, under the tutelage of your grandfather, look forward to seeing you excel in this sport!!! As between THE SISTERS, the first stage resulted in a tie. Ms. Katie took a significant lead following the second and third stages. After Ms. Beth s rifle fell and became disabled, Don Coleman (safety officer, competitor, grandfather of Ms. Hall, and Instructor) let her use his Anschutz which is heavier than she is used to. The additional weight helped Beth stabilize her shots and she posted what she hoped was to be her first 90+ score. Unfortunately, she saved a shot and only put nine shots downrange resulting in a loss of 10 points. Beth and Katie traded leads through the remaining stages. Because your reporter is husband to one and thus related to the other through marriage, and he understands the value of family as well as the full import of the phrase domestic tranquility, I end the description of the match here (but congratulate first Katie and then Beth because I claim to be a gentleman. I also say that we hope that Katie and her husband will grace us with their presence at any and all future matches). And the same wish goes to all who read this. We cordially invite you to participate in any of our Light Rifle matches. They are specifically designed and intended for any and all, and ESPECIALLY those who have never competed before. NO special equipment is required. All you need is an off the shelf.22 LR caliber rifle. The match is fired one shot at a time (do not load a magazine with more than one bullet). Safety is the first and foremost concern. Basically, your total output to compete in this match could be less than $200 (cost of rifle and ammunition). You ll receive instruction (if you wish) from certified experts (although it is fair to ask what I mean by certified ). 12 (Continued on page 13)

NRA Light Rifle (Continued from page 12) I can not finish the report without a special shout out to a number of people without whom any of these match would not be possible. Match Director Simon Bailey often both competes, as well as organizes, reports, and directs these event. This month, he was not shooting due to recent wrist surgery. Instead, he handled all scoring duties which resulted in a fast-moving match. Thank you. A huge thanks too goes out to the rest of the Bailey family, all of whom have been out at the range and helping to put together a fantastic event. As we head toward the end of the season, pax vobiscum. And Mr. Don Coleman, grandfather of Octavia and Safety Officer a huge thanks to you for keeping everyone safe and your advice and friendship. The next match will be held on August 5th and will return to the 50 yard format with one match iron sights only (Woo hoo! What sadistic son of a gun thought that one up?) (Seriously, its challenging, but lots of fun) and one match an any sight match. 13

14 Rimfire Benchrest Sunday July 23rd bloomed warm and humid on Multipurpose Range 1 for the monthly Rimfire Benchrest match. It was decided at the June match that July was to include stages at all 3 available distances 50, 100 & 200 yards. Since some Benchrest rifles do not have sufficient elevation adjustment to fire directly at 200 yards, it requires a slight temporary modification of the target frame to determine bullet drop per rifle and then post targets. Usually the stages are fired in order from closest to farthest, but wise heads prevailed and the setup at the 200 yard line was started in the relative cool of the morning. The six competitors present started about their task and after some sweat equity had the 8 tall foam backers in place and the brown paper posted up with sighting marks posted to begin the sighting process. As to be predicted, just as firing began, the wind began to make its presence known adding windage and additional drop to the test groups. Still, with the test process complete, drops on the order of 34 to 37 were determined for half of the field with the others able to adjust sufficiently to hit the point of aim (thanks to shimmed scopes, tapered bases or lots of turret adjustment). With all testing complete, IBS 300 yard targets were posted an the match began in earnest, with three competitors assigned to the Unlimited Class and three assigned to the Sporter Class. The relatively calm morning had developed some impressive breezes frustrating accurate shot placement. At the end of the stage, the three Sporter shooters were all within 5 points of each other with Shaun Forgus using his custom 10/22 semiauto and bipod firing a 219-0X, Steve Gould s CZ455 from a rest posted a 218-0X and Wayne Hunt using his Anschutz and bipod shot a 214-2X. In the Unlimited Class, Simon Bailey fired a 235-1X with his Hall/Tenex combo while Grant Toman, using his Anschutz 54/Eley Match combo off his new Farley rest, was frustrated with his ammunition lot selection fired a 224-0X and was glad to see the stage end! While the 200 yards targets were scored, the targets were repositioned and firing was set for the 100 yard stage. The winds were still very tricky, with no really consistent pattern emerging as the sky s started to cloud over. Scores improved dramatically in (Continued on page 15)

Rimfire Benchrest (Continued from page 14) both classes, with Hunt taking a solid lead in the Sporter Class by posting a 245-3X while Gould and Forgus swapped places posting a 239-0X and 234-0X respectively. In Unlimited, Andy Greenspon shot a 232-0X while Bailey posted a respectable 246-4X. Toman, changing ammo to a lot of Match that his Anschutz 54 rifle absolutely loves, posted a clean score of 250-3X much to the praise and envy of all. Moving back to the 50 yard line produced some good and bad results. As the skies clouded over, the winds started to drop completely favoring those who took their time in making their shots. Hunt again fired the best sporter score, posting a 240-7X. Gould and Forgus again swapped places with a very disappointed Gould posting a 208-4X to Forgus s 233-8X. Bailey shot quickly trying to exploit the existing wind conditions and ended up dropping three, posting a X. Greenspon fired a 213-2X, while a reinvigorated Toman firing slowly and methodically, almost fired a second clean. Toman, who does not like the type of still conditions he found himself with, made great use of his Farley by taking plenty of sighter shots to gauge the virtually still winds. Toman used 19 of his 20 minutes to fire his string, posting an excellent X! With all firing complete, Wayne Hunt took the $10.00 first prize for 1st Sporter with Simon Bailey taking 1st Unlimited prize with a X. Clearly however, real top honors go to Grant Toman for his amazing 2nd and 3rd stage run where he dropped only one point, but ended up in second with a X. Everybody had a great time and is looking forward to the August match, which will return to two 50 yard stages one 100 yard stage. Rimfire Benchrest is a lot of fun with a relaxed environment and friendly competition. If you have a.22 rifle, a bipod or front rest,a rear bag and some reasonable ammunition, you should come and try it out. The next match will be August 27th on the MP1 range, with registration starting about at 8:30 AM and first shot downrange by 9:30 AM. 15

Smallbore Benchrest Match Simon Bailey The weather prognosticators promised lower humidity, light winds and generally pleasant conditions for Sunday morning and once again they were wrong on all counts. The morning was cool but very humid with mist hanging in the trees early on and solid overcast. The wind, however, was almost non-existent for most of the match and was generally predictable when it was blowing. Only a few short periods of typical River Bend wind were evident, but not all competitors liked the almost still conditions. Match Director Simon Bailey almost didn t join in due to very recent wrist and thumb surgery and the resultant stiches. Ultimately Bailey did join the fray, so seven contestants were on hand to test their skills including one new shooter. The course of fire for this month was two 50 yard matches fired on an RBA target followed by one 100 yard match fired at an IBS-H/2 target. A good mix of rifles were represented ranging from a custom Hall to a CZ-455 with one Savage A HMR on hand. Starting in almost completely still winds, the first 50 yard match was proceeding well when Bambi showed up to interrupt the event. At about the 15 minute mark, a doe and a buck in velvet slipped down from the berm between MP2 and MP1. The doe calmly walked out onto the range floor at about 75 yards while the buck hung back at the edge of the berm. An immediate cease fire was called, and the doe started to exit stage left. Unfortunately the buck decided to hang out a bit which led to the match director, an avid deer hunter, doing something he never imagined. With all rifles made safe, Bailey went running down range arms waving yelling Run Away, Run Away. The buck finally took heed of the match directors command and, well, ran away. With the range cleared of obstructions, firing resumed. When the targets were scored, it was pretty obvious which rifles liked humid still conditions and which didn t. With one shot a bit wide that plugged in his favor, Bailey, using his Hall/ Shilen/Eley combo, posted a rare X to take a solid lead. Last month s match winner, Grant Toman, using his Anschutz/Shilen/Eley rig didn t like still air quite as much, but still turned in a solid X. Wayne Hunt, using his Anschutz 65 shooting RWS 50 from a bipod, posted a respectable 239-7X. (Continued on page 17) 16

Smallbore Benchrest Match (Continued from page 16) During the second 50 yard match, the wind did a few silly things but, in general, was an almost textbook affair with all flags pointing in the same direction and gradual build ups and let offs very predictable and fun to hold off and hit X s. Scores stayed within a couple of points of the first match, with Bailey dropping a couple of points to post a X to hold onto first and Toman posting a 243-8X. Hunt held onto 3rd place with a 232-4X. Next up was the 100 yard match. The wind continued to be fairly lazy and predictable resulting in some very nice groups being fired. Bailey continue to shoot well but suffered from a completely unexplained dropout on one round that ended up as an 8 at 6:00 ahh the vagaries of even good 22 ammunition strike again. His target scored a 248-4X with the final X remaining elusive. Toman shot well with very tight groups and 5X s but dropped three points on slightly wide shots that just didn t touch the 10 ring. Hunt again placed well, scoring a 244-2X. An unfortunate sight alignment left new competitor, Lewis Burger, leaving 52 points on the table by cross firing on one bull something many of us have experienced at one point or another. With all matches fired, the points were totaled and cash prizes awarded: Simon Bailey X 1st Place Grant Toman X 2nd Place Wayne Hunt X 3rd Place $20.00 prize $10.00 prize $ 5.00 prize After the match Andy Greenspon provided a great lunch of Crab & Lobster salad for all which was very well received. Thanks to everybody for helping out and for having a great time. Please see the scores page on the RBGC website ( ) for the full match bulletin. 17
