Official Newsletter of River Bend Gun Club The Bullet-IN River Bend Gun Club is a club for members, founded in Issue No. 253 October 2018 Land Purchase Opportunity Update Inside this issue RBGC Members WE DID IT! Official Club Business... 3 Updated Range Rules... 5 Young Shooter s Challenge... 6 Action Pistol... 7 Bullseye Pistol Championship Hunting Rifle Light Rifle Rimfire Benchrest Smallbore Rifle Prone Youth Shooting Sports October Calendar November Calendar Classified Ads Range Map Late Friday, 9/21/18, I learned that the second we sent to members at 6:00 PM Thursday, 9/20/18, generated more than enough responses for the club to achieve its goal of selling 67 life memberships to raise $507,525 to buy the 55 acre parcel along our eastern border and we sold the last six life memberships that afternoon. 60 acres was our original planning target and we would have needed to sell 73 life memberships to raise the funds for that volume. When we received the survey on 9/11/18 and learned the actual size of the parcel is acres, it reduced the number of life memberships we needed to sell to 67. 1

Land Purchase Opportunity (Continued from page 1) We have received checks for life memberships from all member applicants, we have sold all the new life memberships we needed to and we now have an additional eight member applicants on the new life member waiting list posted outside the Club Manager s office. We also received a total of $4,700 in donations giving us a total of $512,225. Our real estate attorney is doing a title search on the property. Tuesday, 9/18/18, I sent a copy of the survey to the seller and I expect to have a follow up meeting with him within the next few days to finalize the terms of the purchase contract. I anticipate closing in late October. We owe special recognition to Erica D'Amico, Club Secretary and Bill Illg, Club Manager for their tireless efforts to contact members, answer questions, process applications and checks, produce reports and provide frequent updates. I would like to also recognize David Norcross, Annual Director for his vision and creative talents in sending the two blasts to our member database. These s generated the club member support we needed. In addition, I want to express my sincere appreciation to the RBGC Board of Directors for their unwavering support for our efforts to achieve this goal. For all the club members who helped in so many ways, thank you for your support, help and encouragement. Will Owensby 2

Updated Range Rules My name is Bill Franco. For the last five year, I have worked as the Assistant Chief Range Officer. In June of 2018, I was promoted to the Chief Range Officer for River Bend Gun Club. Several members have asked that I post information when there are changes to the Rule Book. In keeping with those requests, here are some recent changes to our rule book. These changes give our members more opportunities to utilize our range. The new Rule Book dated September 2018 is posted on our website at RBGC.org. Below I have outlined those changes. 1. The word "Range Tour" has been taken out of the rule book. We still hold an event every 4th Sunday of the month, but the new name is the New Member Orientation Class. The New Member Orientation should be the last step in a new member s application process. We were having the public show up to the "Range Tour hoping just to see our ranges. Several did not have interest in joining the club and were looking for a quick tour. When they found out the class was five hours, they would leave Centerfire Plinking Range- We now have two centerfire plinking ranges below Cowboy Hill. This is the only place on club property where you are permitted to shoot cans and plastic bottle positioned on the rear berm with your centerfire pistol/revolver (ie.38,.380, 9mm, 45, etc). There is now a plate rack in each of the bays. You may shoot your pistols and rifles chambered in 22 Long, Long Rifle, and Short in these bays at cans, plastic bottles, etc. and at the plate racks. If you shoot a magnum in these bays, you may not shoot the plate rack. Please use a paper or cardboard target. 3. New NFA ROs- My assistants, Steve Martin (ACRO II) and Phil Alexander (ACRO), have been added as NFA ROs. They are now allowed to supervise members who are certified (Orange Pin) to shoot pistol caliber carbines in the fully automatic mode. There are now seven ROs for NFA (page 31 of Rule Book) Multipurpose Range- For years, we have verbally approved members to place their personally owned steel at the rear berm of MP1 or MP2. This is now written into the rule book. All steel must be at the furthest rear berm of the range. (page 32 of Rule Book) 5. Emergency Plan Update- Due to some power failure and connectivity problems with our solar powered emergency call boxes, we had to move the call box to be connected to power. The emergency call box that was on the entrance to the Silhouette Range has been moved to the Silhouette firing line. The box that was in the parking lot of MP2 has been moved to the building of MP2. (page 40 and 41 of Rule Book) 6. I have updated the map in the Rule Book to include the location of the 22 Rimfire Rifle Range (page 44 of Rule Book). I hope you enjoy these changes and if I can ever help you, please at cro@rbgc.org 5

Action Pistol September 15, 2018 Morning broke with another beautiful Match Saturday and Mother Nature smiling again on Action Pistol. 63 shooters enjoyed a great match with a little seasonal sports themed added to the mix. Bay 1 Our regular torment of plates and pins was complicated by some IPSC targets and that, oh so brief, turning IPSC. Got to be quick with that follow up shot! (Continued on page 8) 7

(Continued from page 7) Action Pistol Bay 2 With appreciation to those who serve in dangerous places for us, we had to give a nod to football season in Afghanistan with a mix of American sports (not that other "football") and all-american shooting. Quick drop back, pass, load, run, shoot, run more, shoot more and score. There were a lot of strange throwing styles but everyone scored points! (Continued on page 9) 8

Action Pistol (Continued from page 8) Bay 3 In September, we have to save a thought for our friend John Bryant. John may be gone but he is not forgotten and his memory lives on in the Forest of Barrels Course of Fire. You have to keep looking or you'll miss a target that's hiding almost in plain sight! Action Pistol Traditions As is the Action Pistol tradition, the match was followed up with a lunch off the grill -- this month was hotdogs plus our newest trend, homemade specialties from our shooters. We have some amazing kitchen talent that can handle firearms and, of course, the fan favorite Action Pistol Door Prizes. Our thanks again to all the Range Officers and volunteers who make RBGC Action Pistol a success. The next AP Match is the 10th Anniversary Zombie Match October 20th, Be forewarned... 9

2018 GA State Bullseye Pistol Championship Ladies and Gents, Thank you to all 26 shooters who came out for the Georgia State Bullseye Pistol Championship held September 15-16, 2018 at River Bend Gun Club in Dawsonville, GA. I will send out a PDF of the CMP.22 Distinguished match as soon as possible. Thanks again to all who participated and helped. Best regards, David Donley 10

Hunting Rifle Match On Saturday, September 15th the Hunting Rifle Match met on River Bend s High Power range with 14 shooters in attendance. Saturday s weather offered what may have been the best shooting conditions of the year with calm wind and moderate temps. We welcomed 3 new shooters to the venue and hope to see all return! With the safety briefing completed and squads assignments announced, squads separated to the target pits and firing line by 9am. Saturday s course of fire offered a standard 300 yard Bullseye target shot from 200, 300, and 600 yards in the single-shot slow-fire format (we also offer NRA life size animal targets for those preparing for an upcoming hunt). Backing up to the 600 yard line, shooters quickly made their sight adjustments and found their marks to turn in some of the best groups of the year. (Continued on page 12) 11

Hunting Rifle Match (Continued from page 11) For those having a desire to develop skills in shooting at distance, come out and join us on the 3rd Saturday of each month. The Hunting Rifle venue is non-competitive and as the name implies is designed primarily to provide a distance shooting venue for hunting type rifles. Range officers are available to assist with ballistics, sight adjustments and shooting positions. We also see a high level of participation from those shooting precision rifles and encourage both classes of shooters to attend. Whether preparing for either an upcoming hunt or precision rifle match, come join us at our next match on Saturday, October 20th on River Bend s High Power Range. For more information on this match, please visit the Hunting Rifle page. Greg Hughes RO/Hunting Rifle 12

Light Rifle Labor Day Weekend. The unofficial last day of Summer. For most, a hot muggy weekend. For many, a Monday off from work. For the lucky few, a day to shoot a Light Rifle Match! Fourteen shooters were on hand to enjoy the hot muggy weather and fun competition. One new shooter was on hand to watch but was coxed into shooting and was glad he did! Shooting started at 9:30 AM with a short sight-in period and by 9:45 the record shots were swimming their way to the targets through the thick humid air. Stage one saw Simon Bailey post a solid 90.0X to take the lead with Intermediate Junior Ethan Wood soring an impressive 88.0X to place second over Mark Dorlay in 3rd with an 87.0X. Normal high scoring shooters George Wilson and King Stracke stared out a bit slow, scoring in the mid-80 s on the first stage, something that was about to change. By the end of the second stage, Wilson had posted a 94.0X to tie with Bailey for first place while Stracke posted a 91.0X to move into 3rd by 1 point over Dorlay who fired an 89.1X. Dorlay usually shoots metallic sights on a CZ Lux with a long barrel. This month he was using his scoped Shorty CZ which threw him off his stride. With proper light and adequate watering, Shorty might, one day, grow up to be a full-sized rifle, but for this day seemed to be coming up a bit short. In the Marksman Class, the first four places were all separated by only 4 points, 1 per place. In the Master Class, first time shooter James Arnold, using a borrowed CZ455, was posting very respectable scores especially considering this was his very first outing and he was firing the rifle for the first time. In stages 3 and 4 Stracke came alive, shooting a 94.0X and a 95.0X to move into first place. Bailey didn t exactly go to sleep, but his 93.1X and 92.0X just couldn t hold Stracke back. Wilson moved to 3rd place and Bob Morris scoring an 89.1X and a 90.2X moved to the top of the Marksman Class. In the Wood Family contest, Ethan Wood, while starting out strong, slipped a bit while his Dad Craig Wood began to post very good scores to start moving up. (Continued on page 14) 13

Light Rifle (Continued from page 13) By now the temps and humidity were beginning to take their toll, but an occasional breeze helped cool things down a bit but was not strong enough or sustained enough to cause significant position instability. Still, shot timing did become more important. In the next to last stage, Stracke and Wilson again slipped into the mid-80 s. Wilson came roaring back in the final stage posting his second 94.0X with Stracke firing a 91.1X. Unfortunately, it was too little, as Bailey scored a solid 94.0X followed by a 91.0X to finish the match with a 549.1X to tie his personal best and take first place. In the Master class, Arnold saved his best for last, shooting a 91.1X, having a great time and promising to be back next month. Morris retained the top spot in the Marksman class with a 513 and 5 X s with lone woman shooter Beth Reynolds taking second Marksman only 1 point back at 512-1X. In the ongoing Wood family feud, age bested youth this month with father Craig outshooting Ethan based on X s X to 497.0X Please see the Match Bulletin posted on the website for full results and congratulations to all the winners. Simon Bailey X - Match Winner King Stracke X - 2nd Place George Wilson X - 3rd Place The next match will be the Club Championship Match to be held on Saturday, October 6th. The Championship match will be a 60-shot match fired at 50 ft. After the match is over, two one shot fun matches will be fired with a brick of SK Match ammo awarded to each match winner. Grab your 22 rifle and come on out and join the fun and friendly competition. 14

September 2018 Rimfire Benchrest Match Report Simon Bailey Rimfire Benchrest Apparently, summer 2018 has decided not to leave even at the end of September with grey skies, high humidity, warm temperatures and variable winds greeting the final Rimfire Benchrest match of the season. The course of fire for the season ending match was four cards two to be shot at 100 yards and two at 50 yards. All shooters used the IBS 200 yard target at 100 yards, but at 50 yards the Unlimited class fired at the RBA 50 yard target and the Sporter class fired at the green IBS 50 yard target. After a short sight-in period, the first match got underway just as the wind made a noticeable but very brief appearance. As would be expected, with generally calm conditions, scores were very respectable and close. Simon Bailey, returning his Hall/Shilen/Tenex combination to action, was on the way to a clean 250, until his 4th from last shot suffered a serious unexplained drop-out to leave him with a 249-3X. Pat Patterson, Hall/Shilen/Lapua, was only one point back (248-3X), trailed another point back by Bill Parker (247-4X) using his 2500/Shilen/Center-X rig. Joe Ettershank, absent last month, started out well in the Sporter class firing a 243-2X with his Anschutz 1727 firing RWS R-50. In the second 100 yard match, there was a little more wind, but this did not stop Bill Parker from posting a clean 250-4X! Patterson and Bailey posted 247 s with Bailey having 3X s to Patterson s 2X s although Bailey suffered more from unexpected drop-outs than the wind. In the Sporter class Ettershank improved by one point to 244 with 4X s - an excellent X count. The target frames were then moved back to 50 yards, just in time for an uptick in the winds which became variable both in speed and direction. Consistent wind conditions became rare. In the first 50 yard match, Bailey posed a X, dropping one point to a missed wind reversal and a second to a bad wind hold. Steve Gould, firing a VooDoo V22/ Center-X combo firing in Unlimited class, shot a 245 to match Parkers 245. Ettershank continued to lead the Sporter class with a 246-6X, and Andy Greenspon using his MPR and RWS Special Match started to move up, posting a 242-3X. (Continued on page 16) 15

Rimfire Benchrest (Continued from page 15) The final 50 yard match was, well..interesting. Bailey had a very poor start, dropping 5 points in 3 shots! After his first record shot went low and right, a sighter shot went exactly as aimed, giving confidence for the next shot. This confidence was misplaced, as the next shot defied the wind like it had a mind of its own, going high and right. Another sighter went exactly as aimed, followed by a third record shot that again went wild, but the opposite way low and left perhaps a thorough cleaning is in order! Giving up on sighters, Bailey s subsequent shots completely settled down with only one more point dropped in the match Go Figure! Still, the disappointing X was sufficient to hold onto first place and overcome Patterson s final excellent effort of X. Parker, having a great match so far, suffered a bit in the wind with some interesting shots, to fire a final 243-9X. When the dust settled, only 3 points separated the top 3 Unlimited shooters. In Sporter class, Greenspon made a late push by firing an outstanding 249-4X. Ettershank responded with a 245-7X, but with a substantial lead, Ettershank easily finished the match as first Sporter. Congratulations to Unlimited class winner Bailey (988-31X) and Sporter class winner Ettershank (978-19X). Please see the Match Bulletin on the website for the full match results. After the scores were tallied and the prize money awarded, Andy Greenspon used his true talent to provide an awesome end of season feast of Bar-B-Que and all the fixings, along with his famous Crab Cakes - much to the appreciation of all. What a great way to end the season a good match and a full stomach! The dates for the 2019 season will be posted on the calendar soon and I welcome everyone to join us in 2019 for the fun and challenge of Rimfire Benchrest! 16

Smallbore Rifle Prone River Bend hosted the 2018 Georgia State Smallbore Prone Championship on September 22-23, In addition to being a Conventional Prone (sling) championship, this year s match also featured the inaugural F-Class Smallbore championship, in which competitors shoot on a front rest or bipod. We had fourteen competitors shooting sling and six shooting F- Class, with shooters from several states. Among the sling shooters were six juniors, who were a welcome addition as they represent the future of our sport. The weather was beautiful, with temperatures in the 70s and 80s, no rain, and typical River Bend wind that frequently changed direction and intensity. The match followed its customary format: 160 record shots each day, with the sling shooters shooting with metallic ( iron ) sights the first day and any sights (irons or scope) the second day. The F-Class competitors, who shoot on the very challenging International targets, shot with scopes both days. A perfect score for the two-day match would be X. The NRA Postal Match. The NRA sponsors a postal match contested by state teams chosen at state championships. Each state fires its match and then mails the results to NRA. Each state s team consists of the four state-resident competitors who fire the highest scores in the iron sight Dewar match (20 shots at 50 yards and 20 shots at 100 yards). This year s state team is comprised of Larry Sollars (400-33x), Anusha Pakkam (400-28X), Steve Hardin (399-36X), and Robert Davis (399-28X). Georgia won the 2013 postal match and we are hoping for a repeat this year. The Juniors. Thirteen-year-old Jacob Day shot X to place third among the juniors. Jacob shoots with a level of precision, focus, and patience that would be the envy of most adults. He was accompanied by his grandfather/coach, Mr. Jack Writer. Among Mr. Writer s many accomplishments: he was a national collegiate shooting champion at West Virginia University, he was a member of Jacob Day the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit, and he won countless medals in international (Continued on page 18) 17

Smallbore Rifle Prone (Continued from page 17) shooting competition, including silver at the 1968 Olympics and gold at the 1972 Olympics. In Jacob s case, the apple did not fall far from the tree. In addition to making the state team with her excellent showing in the Dewar match, Anusha Pakkam placed second among the juniors with a score of X, shooting with iron sights both days. This was Anusha s second match at River Bend and we hope she ll become a regular participant at our matches, as she will help keep the adults on their toes. Sawyer Williams placed first among the juniors with an exceptional X, also shooting with iron sights Anusha Pakkam both days. In his first-ever Conventional Prone Match, Sawyer shot a score that qualifies him for an NRA Master classification, the highest classification in smallbore. Making Master at one s first tournament is almost unheard-of, and we congratulate Sawyer on this accomplishment. Sawyer Williams The Conventional Prone Championship. The sling shooters battled it out all weekend, with Tennessean Mike Carter firing a X to place third. River Bend s Larry Sollars came in second with a X, though I am going to place an unofficial asterisk next to his score. The one and only shot of the 320-shot match on which Larry did not score a 10 came on the second day when an insect bit him as he was breaking his shot, causing him to throw the shot into the 5-ring. But for that Mike Carter freakish occurrence, Larry would have shot a perfect score. He was, however, the highest-scoring Georgia resident competitor, and thus the 2018 Georgia State Conventional Prone Champion. First-place honors went to Tennessean Howard Pitts, who fired a X a perfect score on points, known in the smallbore world as a In addition to being a superb gunsmith, Howard is one of the premier smallbore Larry Sollars shooters in the country, and he now joins a select group of shooters who have attained the 3200 milestone. 18 Howard Pitts (Continued on page 19)

Smallbore Rifle Prone (Continued from page 18) The F-Class Championship. Louisiana s Alden Meaux Marrero left his sling at home and shot F-Class this year, placing third in F-Class with a score of X. River Bend s multi-discipline rimfire expert Simon Bailey fired an excellent aggregate of X, despite having a finicky extractor that impeded his reloading sequence. Simon was the highestscoring Georgia resident and thus the 2018 (and first) Georgia State F-Class Smallbore Champion. Alden Meaux Marrero Richard Bordelon, another Louisiana competitor, finished first in F-Class with a X. Richard has shot F-Class at River Bend several times and, as Simon Bailey he always does, showed that he is a very hard man to beat. Many thanks to Tommy Steadman and Paula Holliday for running the Statistical Office, Jim Holliday, Sairaj Pakkam and Tommy Steadman for scoring targets, and Dennis Lindenbaum for calling the match. Our next match and the last one of 2018 will be an NRA-approved Metric 1200 on November 17, We will start one hour later than usual, with registration opening at 9:00 a.m. and first shots at 10:00 a.m. For further information, please Dave Rabin at smallbore@rbgc.org Dave Rabin Richard Bordelon 19
