To the 10th Australian International Shell Show 7th to 9th February 2014 Balgowlah RSL Memorial Club Ethel Street, Seaforth NSW 2092 Presented by The Shell Club of Sydney ENQUIRIES: Contacts: Steve Dean (Shell Show Manager, Club President) PO Box 316 Mona Vale, NSW Peter Pienaar (Shell Show Registrar and Treasurer) PO Box 901, Campbelltown, NSW Maureen Anderson (Shell Show Committee, Club Vice President)

Introduction Welcome to Sydney for the 10th Australian International Shell Show to be held at Seaforth (near Manly, Sydney) on 8-9 February 2014, with exhibitor set-up and judging on 7 th February. The Shell Club of Sydney is dedicated to fostering the study and appreciation of ocean, river, and land shells, as well as fossil shells. Supported by dedicated people, both the sciences of malacology and conchology have a long history in Australia. In February 2014 it will not be simply the pleasure of renewing acquaintances from interstate and overseas, but also the exquisite joy that will be experienced from viewing some of the world s most beautiful and rare shells. The show presents an opportunity for collectors and researchers to swap or buy those hard to come by specimens. For collectors just starting out, you will have the opportunity to rapidly expand your collection. There will be raffles, auctions and free giveaways. On behalf of the Committee and our members, I take this opportunity to say how much we are looking forward to meeting you in February Steve Dean, President Venue Balgowlah RSL Memorial Club Ethel Street, Seaforth NSW 2092 (02) The whole of the top floor is dedicated to the Shell show for the three days, and for the Saturday Awards Dinner and the Sunday farewell barbecue. Auction, talks, and buy swap and sell will also be on this floor. For dealers and exhibitors lifts are available from basement car park to foyer to sign in, then foyer to top floor. The venue is located 12kms from the CBD, 4km from the famous Manly Beach, and 23kms from Sydney Airport. If you feel the need to do some shopping Seaforth suburban shopping centre is just out the door. A large suburban Mall (Warringah Mall) 6km away, and at Manly for food and souvenir shops (4km). Transport From Manly Wharf: Hop Skip Jump Bus is Free. Also government buses route 144, (else 140, 135). Taxi $15 From City: Many bus routes from Wynyard stop at Seaforth Shops (Venue is near the shops). For a scenic route catch a ferry from the city to Manly Wharf, then bus or taxi from there. From Narrabeen Caravan Park: Many bus routes stop at Seaforth Shops. More choices if you change at Warringah Mall Parking Parking is available under the premises and street parking is also available. Accommodation Manly is a tourist destination with a lot of accommodation ranging from back packers through to 5 star beach or harbour front hotels only 5km from the show. Book early for good prices Other beaches have accommodation, but may be pricy. The closest Caravan Park is at North Narrabeen, 14km away. They have cabins and dormitories for groups. There is a New Travelodge Travelodge Manly. It is 5km away along the main beaches bus route at Brookvale, but is not near beaches nor Manly. Motels are located along the Pacific Highway (Chatswood, Artarmon, etc and at Terry Hills) but not cheap. Sydney city centre has all styles of accommodation, but is further away, and has expensive parking.

Standard Display Boxes Many people will already have the standard display boxes and lids from previous Shell Shows. Please arrange to bring these with you for your entries. For this Show the display box as supplied by us will be the same as previous shows ( 60cm x 37cm x 10cm). Exhibitors can make height adjustments by cutting the box down or by adding false bottoms for best display of smaller shells. All competitive displays are to be in landscape orientation, not portrait. That is to say, the box will be presented with the longest side (60cm) facing towards the edge of the table and the viewer, and the labels and shells set to be viewed from this direction. If you are bringing your own display boxes, you are requested to ensure that the box/case dimensions do not exceed 60cm x 37cm. Note for smaller boxes the maximum depth is still 370mm. A very small box could optionally be set in portrait orientation, provided the long axis was then less than 370mm. Exhibiting larger/taller specimens Some exhibitors have expressed a desire to take up more space so they can include larger specimens. Here are the choices: a) There is no height restriction on exhibit boxes to accommodate tall specimens provided it can be judged and viewed without a ladder. b) You can use an additional box to double the display area for a single exhibit. Note if you take two box spaces, even though it is one exhibit, you will need to pay for both spaces (an extra $5). Also both boxes must still be in landscape orientation, that is side by side with their short sides touching, not one behind the other. (The result is up to 1200mm along the front, and 370mm deep) If you exceed these maximums your entry may not be judged. Australian Customs And Quarantine Requirements Regarding Specimen Shells International visitors are strongly advised to declare all animal products, such as shells, being brought into Australia. If you bring in shells containing insects or maggots, uncleaned shells, material collected in areas identified with foot-and-mouth disease risk, and Giant African land-snail shells, may result in all your shells being confiscated. Competition Entries Competition entry registration is required by 30 December Payment in full must accompany competition entries. Refer to attached Registration Form, and Competition Categories. Setting up will be between 2:30pm and 5:00pm on Friday 7 th February 2014 Other Activities, Field Trips etc. Apart from those described in the programme no other activities have been arranged. However should you require collecting information kindly contact us. Sell, Swap, Buy A sell/swap/buy area will be available for two hours on Sunday morning and will cost $20.00 per space to display your stocks. Please indicate number of spaces required on the Shell Show Registration form. Judging and notes for specific categories: The general guidelines for judging that will be used for the judges briefing are available on the web site Dealer Space A dealer space will cost $ per table for the entire show. There will be very few additional tables available, if any. Dealers are advised to register early. A table space measures 1800mm x 750mm. Each dealer will also need to contribute two shells for our raffles or auctions

Competition Exhibit set up and Judging Judging will commence Friday starting at 6.00pm (followed by a short get together for Judges, Dealers and Committee with finger food). Exhibit and dealer set-up MUST be completed by 5pm Friday 7/2/14 Please indicate on the registration form if your wish to be a judge, if possible along with the categories you would like to judge. There is no guarantee that you will be allotted the categories nominated, as we prefer a mix of judges from all states. Security Unless it is absolutely essential, judging will be closed box. i.e. done without opening the display boxes We will endeavour to have Shell of the Show and Favourite Spectacular Shell in a sealed cabinet, provided there are not too many competitors. You will need to present with your specimens for these categories at precisely 5pm Friday when specimens will be set out and the cabinet sealed. Choosing exhibits for high scores Judges are instructed to give higher scores to exhibits that include maximum variety of Genus, Species and/or Family, as appropriate to the category. (e.g. in Volutidae if you included multiple subspecies or forms of Cymbiola pulchra this would LOWER your score). However it is not necessary to strive for equal numbers of each Genus. Variety of Genera might equate to half a point in the judges scoring to differentiate otherwise tied scores. For best score it is also important to strive for maximum variety of collected locality and terrain of exhibited specimens. For some categories judges and exhibitors could interpret differently what Genera are to be included. For the purpose of this show, the included Genus, Sub-Genus and/or Families are as per Australian Marine Shells Part. 1&2, Barry Wilson, and Bivalves of Australia Vol 1&2 Lamprell/Whitehead, Lamprell/Healy. For worldwide Families not included in these books, then the Compendium of Seashells Abbott & Dance may provide guidance. Some families are subject to regular revision into sub-families, and some species into subspecies. In these instances judges should accept the well-known synonyms (i.e. used throughout the literature) as valid. e.g. Cypraea xyz Program (All activities are in the Balgowlah RSL) Friday 7 th February pm 5.00pm 5.00pm 6.00pm 7.30pm Exhibitor and dealer set-up. 5 Shell Show Competition Rules Summary and Notes International Shell Show 2014 The full sets of rules, and the judges guide lines can be reviewed on our web site in the Calendar section. Below are the important points: 1. Competitive entry is open to exhibitors who have registered by submitting a completed registration form and paid the applicable registration fees and exhibitor fees no later than 30 Dec When your competitive displays are set up, you will need to come to the registration desk and get number tags to attach to each display. Judging is based on the number on each display, not the owners name. Do not write your name on or in your displays. 3. The maximum size for a display box is 600mm x 370mm with no height restrictions. 4. Due to table size limitations box orientation is 600mm along the front by 370 deep as viewed by judges and spectators. i.e. not Portrait orientation. Shells and labels should be set to suit this orientation. If a display box is smaller it must be no more than 370mm deep. Non-complying boxes will not be judged. 5. Categories with only a single shell can be in smaller boxes, or no box, at your own risk. 6. For Shell of the Show and Wow factor single specimens we have one glass cabinet for display. If all specimens do not fit, then larger ones may be outside the cabinet 7. To allow for large specimens it is possible to have a box with a high lid. Or by paying for a second display space it is then possible to place boxes next to each other as one display. Boxes next to each other must be side by side with the short sides touching, not one behind the other, so that the maximum depth still remains at 370mm. 8. To enter a category you pay $5 per box footprint or $5 for each shell of the show or wow factor entry. One entry is included with registration. 9. Maximum entries in Shell of the Show is 3 per individual. and three in category Favourite Spectacular Shell. Shells for these categories need to be separate to your competitive entries in other categories 10. There is no limit on the number of entries in the other categories 11. Entries may be titled, and should be titled where it is necessary to indicate the content of an entry. 12. Once you have set up a display you contact one of our staff who will note down your name, the category and the number that they stick on the exhibit in a corner for anonymous judging. 13. Clarification relating to ID must be directed and resolved by the Shell Show Manager prior to the start of the competition 14. Categories for worldwide (WW) localities need not include Australian species. 15. Categories for shells collected in Australia (A) must include species that have as wide a geographical distribution as possible. Australia includes Australia and its Territories. 16. Muricidae, due to the large number of SubFamilies and Genera within this Family there is no requirement to seek diversity of Genus, only species. In fact judges could well favour exhibits with a predominance of subfamily Muricinae, specifically the attractive spined or frilled species. 17. Mitridae and Costellariidae, can include either or both families but does NOT need to include both Mitridae & Costellariidae specimens. 18. Haliotidae, with several shells up, several down, they are not in pairs of one species, all shells in the display should be different species. 19. Identification labels must accompany shells and other exhibits and must include as a minimum: genus, species, author, date and locality data. Family sub-specific identification may be added where appropriate.

20. For most categories judging points are to be allocated as follows: 50% for quality points deducted for flaws, holes, immaturity, faded, uncleaned or buffed. 20% for high degree of variety as appropriate to the category, e.g. range of species, range in size, range in locality and range of colours and shape. 20% for presentation, i.e. layout, attractiveness, labels. 10% for number of specimens and labelling, i.e. accuracy and completeness of information (hand written labels are acceptable). (Also display box size) 21. For categories with only one specimen judging is primarily on quality. 22. Rarity or dollar value of specimens should not influence scoring. There is no portion of the score that relates to rarity. However in the event of two entrants ending up with identical total scores, only then should judges adjust final scores to give preference to the entry with rarer shells. 23. Shell of the Show is primarily judged for quality of shell and labelling. In the event there are a lot of bivalves then judges may be instructed to select best Bivalve and separately best Gastropod with two sets of certificates then awarded 24. Favourite (Spectacular) Shell means a shell regarded with special favour or preference. The shell could also be marked by or given to great display. Wow factor comes to mind. It will primarily be judged for general appeal of specimen not quality or maturity. 25. Any post judging disputes must be directed to the Shell Show Manager after completion of judging Friday night and prior to the presentation of awards on Saturday night. 26. Judging worksheets will be made available to exhibitors to read on request, as a means of providing feedback on quality etc. of display, and to provide guidance for future shows. Judges are encouraged to add notes 27. Entries must be set up in accordance with the Shell Club s instructions and all exhibits must remain on display until the end of the show. 28. The Shell Club of Sydney, through its members, agents or guests, will not be responsible for any breakage, loss, theft or any other damage of whatsoever nature to shells or any other materials exhibited for the duration of the Australian International Shell Show. 29. It is a condition of taking a table or entering the competition that all registrants accept and agree to abide by the full set of Shell Show Rules (see web site). 30. If something is still unclear, please contact members of the committee as soon as possible, or check with our web site in case someone else has asked the question and we have since posted the answer.
