Coleraine Judo Club Newsletter Website: Winter 2013 Welcome to the second of our Club Newsletters. The purpose of the Newsletter is to bring people up to date on recent Club achievements, deliver information on forthcoming events and provide information of developments within and around the Club. Since the summer issue the Club has gone from strength to strength. At the Irish Open both Stephen and Rebecca Cuckoo won bronze medals and collected points towards their 2 nd Dan. Hon. Secretary Peter Cuckoo was awarded Sports Administrator of the year and Philip Duncan received a highly commended parchment in the Coach of the year category at the annual awards ceremony.. The Club s coaches Rebecca Cuckoo, Philip Duncan and Richard Briggs attended a coach revalidation course concentrating on judo games with Dermot Heslop, 6 th Dan. Paul Price was promoted to brown belt (1 st Kyu) and Phil Barnett completed the line-up in the December Dan Grading along with Kingsley Hepburn from the UUC Club. Medals were won at the Northwest Open and the NW FUNdamentals Tournament. The year was rounded off with a grading and a visit from BJA professional coach Dermot Heslop, 6 th Dan. Paul Price has qualified as a BJA Level 1 Coach and is a regular member of the Club s coaching team. Please send contributions to Richard Briggs: rpbjudo@hotmail.com or hand to him on a club night Peter Cuckoo - Sports Administrator of the year and Philip Duncan - highly commended Coach of the year 1

Club Information Committee Chairman/Head Coach: Dr Richard Briggs Secretary: Peter Cuckoo Treasurer: Richard Briggs Welfare Officer: Peter Cuckoo Club Coaches: Philip Duncan, Rebecca Cuckoo & Paul Price Medical Advisor: Dr Charles Jack Committee: Paul Price, Philip Barnett Training Times Wednesday Evenings: Friday Evenings: Cadets/Seniors (15yrs+): 8:15pm to 9:30pm Minors (5-14yrs): 7:30pm to 8:30pm Cadets/Seniors(15yrs+): 8:30pm to 9:30pm Coach Revalidation Day During September Coleraine Judo Club coaches Philip Duncan, Rebecca Cuckoo and Richard Briggs attended a successful Coach revalidation day at the Gym-Tech fitness Centre in Newry. The course was organized by the Northern Ireland Judo Federation and the instructor was Yorkshire man Dermot Heslop 6 th Dan who is a full-time Technical Officer with the British Judo Association. The course theme was judo related games which in addition to providing a warm-up before judo training can be used to develop strength, skill, stamina, flexibility and knowledge of judo terminology. Participants practiced a range of games covering all aspects of judo and much fun was had by all. 2

Success at Irish Open Rebecca, Peter and Stephen Cuckoo in Dublin At Ireland s most prestigious judo event both Stephen and Rebecca Cuckoo returned with bronze medals in their respective weight categories. The Irish Open was held in Dublin in October and attracted top level players from all over Ireland, the UK and further afield. In addition to their medals the Coleraine pair, who are already black belts (1 st Dan), each won 10 points towards 2 nd Dan, the next stage in the judo grade ladder. Their father and Club Secretary and Welfare Officer Peter Cuckoo also attended the event where he helped as a Table Official. In October Paul Price, who assists the Club s coaches was promoted to brown belt (1 st Kyu). Although Paul only started judo a couple of years ago, along with his daughter Sophie, he has progressed in leaps and bounds and has now reached brown belt, the one before black. Paul says he will now start training towards his black belt. Apart from his personal performance Paul is especially interested in teaching the sport and has just completed his Level 1 BJA Coach Award. Brown Belt for Paul 3

Judo Success at Sports Awards Ceremony Coleraine Judo Club was delighted with the award of 2013 Sports Administrator of the Year to their Secretary Peter Cuckoo at a Ceremony in the Lodge Hotel. Although Peter has never actually done judo he has four children associated with the club and two of them are black belts (Rebecca and Stephen). The club has gone from strength to strength during his tenure, winning many medals and clinching the Sports Club of the Year Award in Much of this success is through Peter s hard work which often goes unnoticed. In addition to his role of Honorary Secretary, Peter is Club Welfare Officer. This includes being responsible for child protection matters, updating criminal record checks on coaches and helpers along with ensuring their qualifications are up to date. Peter is also a qualified Table Official and helps out in this capacity at Northern Ireland competitions. During July he assisted at the World Police and Fire Games in Belfast and at the Irish Open in Dublin. A highly commended award to Philip Duncan in the Coach of the Year category at the Awards Ceremony gave another boost to the Judo Club, especially those attending the reception. Much of the club s recent success on the mat is due to the efforts of Philip who is diligent at keeping pace with coaching methods and regularly attends coach revalidation events. This year he introduced a senior session on Wednesdays which compliments the Friday training. Philip is particularly apt at coaching the Junior Club as is seen in a continual stream of medals and grade promotions. The Club thanks the Coleraine Sports Council and the many sponsors who make the awards ceremony such a success 4

Northwest Open Both the Coleraine and UUC Judo clubs excelled at this year s Northwest Open Judo Championships hosted by the Longtower Judo Club in Londonderry. This event attracts players from all over Ireland and beyond, so there was plenty of strong opposition for the local judoka. The Club returned with 10 well deserved individual medals. It was also a historic landmark for the Club in that for the first time they entered a senior team which finished in the silver medal position having been narrowly defeated in the final by the host team. In the semi-final the Coleraine team had an impressive win against Omagh Judo Club, one of the stronger clubs in the Province. The 3-man team comprised of David (Deeks) Small, Stephen Cuckoo and Philip Barnett. In the individual categories Declan Kelly deserves a special mention for winning a bronze medal in the Novice event, his first ever judo competition. Club coach Philip Duncan donned his new judogi and won a Bronze Medal in the Masters competition and Rebecca Cuckoo representing both Coleraine and UUC won silver medals in the Women s Senior Open and Junior U63kg category while her brother Stephen won bronze at under 81kg. Philip Barnett put in some excellent judo to win the Silver Medal in the under 100kg category and David Small stormed home with the second bronze at under 81 kg. 5

Success at Winter Grading and FUNdamentals The Club completed an in-house grading examination on 6 th December. Many of those taking part were new to Judo and were successful in gaining their promotion. This grading marked the penultimate night of judo training before Christmas break and the results are listed below. The Club is especially thankful to Stuart Reece who once again provided a box of Christmas gifts for the Club, a nice end of year climax. Other important Judo news from Club is the winning of bronze medals at the FUNdamentals Tournament in Londonderry by Jack Mathews and Joel Duncan who put up a tremendous performance despite a rather long wait to compete. At a Dan Grading, also in Londonderry Phil Barnett (Coleraine Club) and Kingsley Hepburn (UUC Club) demolished all opposition to gain five ten point wins (ippon) each to complete the competition requirement for their black belt 1 st Dan. They just have just to pass a technical examination to complete this important stage of their Judo career. 7 Guest Coach Visit The Club welcomed Guest Coach Dermot Heslop who took charge of their final Friday session of the year. Dermot is graded at 6th Dan and is a full-time technical Officer of the British Judo Association. He was visiting Northern Ireland to carry out a coach assessment examination in Londonderry. Dermot was a member of the British Judo Squad from 1979 to 1984 and during his competitive career won the British Championships, Welsh Open, Scottish Open and the 1980 Olympic Trials. During the training session Dermot introduced the Club to some new Newaza (groundwork) techniques and organised some enjoyable judo games. A good time was had by all and players were delighted to be on the mat with a coach who trains coaches. Coleraine Juniors with Dermot Heslop (far right).
