1 Dear Sensei and Karateka: It is an honor to be hosting the 2 nd Shorin-Ryu Butokukan International Gasshuku this August 3, 4, and 5 th here in Williamsburg, Virginia featuring my teacher Sokuichi Gibu, Hanshi/10 th dan. This will be Gibu Sensei s second trip to the United States for a Butokukan training camp and he has agreed to make this event open to all karateka- regardless of style or affiliation. The format of this camp will be similar to the 2009 gasshuku and cover topics of kihon, Shorin-Ryu kata, kobudo, kumite (iri-kumi) and application. This is an outstanding opportunity for many to finally train with this great Shorin-Ryu master who has remained very closed-door to anyone but his personal students for many years. Gibu Sensei will be accompanied by Tsuyoshi Tamaki Sensei, fukukaicho 副会長 (vice-president)/8 th Dan, who is not only one of the most senior teachers in the Butokukan, but also trained with Chibana Chosin Sensei in his youth. The response has already been overwhelming by traditional karateka from around the globe who are coming for this opportunity to train with Gibu Sensei and we hope that this experience will create new friendships in the spirit of Okinawa Karate. As there are no spectators or seniors standing on the sidelines in the dojo on Okinawa, we will hope that every participant will represent themselves, their style and their teacher by training on the floor. It is all too common for individuals to attend camps just to have picture opportunities with famous karate sensei but do very little training. Gibu Sensei teaches every class on Okinawa, trains alongside his students and he and the other Okinawan instructors are looking forward to training with our campers as well. The Okinawan guest instructors are 8 th dan, Tsuyoshi Tamaki, Camp classes will consist of kihon, Shorin-Ryu kata, kobudo, kumite (iri-kumi) and application. International Butokukan Instructors: Carlos Magnavachi, Kyoshi/8 th Dan (Argentina) and Carel vd Westhuizen Renshi/6th Dan (South Africa) Who: This camp is for all traditional martial artists, White Belt through Black Belt. Age requirements: 8 or older. Instructors may allow attendance of children under 8 on a case-by-case basis. 5 Sokuichi Gibu, Hanshi/10 th Dan 儀武息一範士 / 十段 Sokuichi Gibu was born in Chinen Village in Southern Okinawa on December 7, He began studying Goju-Ryu at age 14 and then in 1956, began studying with Shorin-Ryu Master Shugoro Nakazato. After years of dedication to his teacher and his dojo, Nakazato Sensei awarded the first 8th dan in the history of the Shorinkan to Gibu Sensei, who served as the vice-president of the organization. He built his own dojo, called the Butokukan, in 1979 in Urasoe City where he has since taught every week. Gibu Sensei was considered one of the toughest fighters of the Shorinkan but was considered to also be a master kata technician whose form mirrored that of Nakazato Sensei. In 1991, Gibu Sensei resigned from the Shorinkan and started his own association, Okinawa Shorin-Ryu Butokukan. The style followed the same curriculum as his teacher, Shugoro Nakazato and was recognized by the Zen Nihon Karate-Do Renmei whose members included such karate greats as Shoshin Nagamine, Kanei Uechi, Meitoku Yagi and Yuchoku Higa. In December of 2005, Hanshi Gibu was promoted to 10th degree black belt/judan by the Zen Nihon Karate-Do Renmei at the Butokukan Hombu dojo and a celebration of this great achievement was held at the Ginowan ANA hotel in April of He was later also recognized and promoted to 10th dan by the Okinawa Karate Association alongside his contemporaries Morio Higaonna(Goju-Ryu) and longtime friend Naoboru Ahagon who were also promoted to 10th dan. Gibu Sensei is well known for his incredible strength, spirit and is considered one of the most talented instructors of his generation however he is probably more recognized for his humbleness and kind nature towards every person he meets.
