1 KARTSPORT TARANAKI NEWSLETTER Issue 22 PAGE 1 February July Kartorque Kartorque Newsletter of KartSport Taranaki In this issue: President s report Birthday list Coming events Classified ads And some more..read on! by Robert Boniface Winter is really starting to bite these days, although I reckon it hasn t been as cold as the mercury says? For instance, I was out feeding the cows every morning this week in shorts and a tee-shirt when the barometer told me it was 1.2 when it felt like about 10. Then last week when it was allegedly 9 it felt like -10? Maybe my body is still having trouble acclimatising to winter having said that, I was in long pants for most of the recent NZ Schools Champs meeting in Palmerston North as it was cold in the Manawatu (no surprises there!) Luckily for us karters, there is little spare time to allow us to travel hundreds of kilometres chasing the thrill(?) of standing on two planks and risking busting a piece of our anatomy on some frozen piece of snow. I can do as much damage to myself defrosting the freezer, so why would I want to subject my body to that sort of torture. And there is no 2-stroke involved so what s the point! The only significant race meeting that I am aware of was the Toyota Racing Series National Schools Championships down in Palmerston North. Five of our drivers attended this meeting, held over the 12th & 13th of July. The quality fields produced great racing. The 5-heat format is good for those who don t have the fastest gear in the world, but like to pass karts. The downside being the need to negotiate fields of less-experienced drivers which poses a different set of challenges. Frankly, I like this format as the racing always produces some excellent spectacles even if it can be a tad rough on the heart! The Jury brothers (Brendon and Ryan) were both competing in the Junior 100cc Yamaha class, Dylan Frere and Jaden Ransley were lined up in both the Junior Restricted and Vortex Mini ROK classes, with the main prize being a trip to Italy to contest the World Mini ROK Cup for 1st and 2nd placegetters in this class. Thomas Boniface was on a mission to defend his 2013 Cadet Raket NZ Schools title and tried to be the inaugural winner of the Cadet ROK NZ Schools title. Brendon had a mixed day on Sunday, securing an 11th, 7th, 6th, 3rd and a 7th place. This gave him 23 points and left him in 7th place overall. Ryan couldn t get as far up the field as he would have liked, bringing his kart home in 12th overall with 14th, 12th, 9th, 12th and 11th place heat finishes. The Junior Yamaha field was full of very good karters, so these are excellent results. Dylan and Jaden competed over both days, the Saturday was the turn of the Mini ROK drivers to strut their stuff in the very first NZ title for this class. Both boys drove great sets of races, and the crowd were all suitably impressed with the display of skill from the entire field. Jaden Ransley scored three 2nd placings, a 7th and a 9th which placed him 2nd overall and the recipient of a trip to Italy for his efforts! Well done Jaden! Dylan scored 5th, 10th, 3rd, 11th and 9th place finishes which gave him 27 points and a well-deserved 6th spot. Then both drivers re-configured their karts to compete in Junior Restricted for the last time at NZ Schools. Frere recorded 9th, 7th, 11th, 3rd and 14th positions, ending up in 9th out of the 22 competitors. Jaden had 8th, 21st,

2 KARTSPORT TARANAKI NEWSLETTER Issue 22 PAGE 2 10th, 5th and 11th finishes, leaving him 4 points behind Dylan in 10th overall. Thomas lined up with something of a target on his back in the Cadet Raket class, another field of very good drivers alongside him. These included local Jackson Rooney, 2NZ Blake Evans and 3xSI Champion Jacob Mitchell. Thomas secured 3rd, 5th, 4th, 1st and 2nd placings, but Mitchell was dominant and won 4 of 5 heats, taking the overall win and leaving Thomas in 2nd place. The Cadet ROK class was a lot closer, and the weather played its part in the outcome a bit. Thomas recorded a 1st, two 2nds a 9th and 10th to end up 2nd overall in this class as well by 2 points. A couple of lowlights of the weekend were the disqualification of Liam Lawson from 1st place in the Mini ROK class due to the incorrect spark plug being fitted to his ROK engine. There were a few inconsistencies over the weekend from the officials (none affected our drivers) and some big crashes which trashed a few dollars worth of gear, all drivers being unhurt which is a great outcome. So, a summary of the results is as follows: Cadet Raket: Club O/All Jacob Mitchell ChCh 1st Thomas Boniface Tar. 2nd Connor Davison Ham. 3rd Vortex Mini ROK: Club O/All Ryan Wood Wgtn 1st Jaden Ransley Tar. 2nd Tom Greig Man. 3rd Dylan Frere Tar. 6th Cadet ROK: Club O/All Connor Davison Ham 1st Thomas Boniface Tar 2nd Cullern Thorby Rot 3rd Junior Restricted: Club O/All Liam Lawson Mt. Both of these events are very important to the club for different reasons. The annual prizegiving is to be held on Saturday 9 August in the Blenheim Room at the Plymouth International Hotel from 6pm onwards. Please note that there are still a few trophies yet to be returned. Please get your trophies back to me as soon as possible to avoid the MC asking you to explain to the new recipient why they didn t get their trophy at prizegiving. There is a notice elsewhere in the newsletter and there have been a few s about it. The tickets must be purchased in advance; there will be no door sales please. Supreme Kart Supplies has the tickets in the shop and EFTPOS, and they will be available at the July Club Day in the clubrooms for sale. No money = no ticket, sorry. The AGM is also fast-approaching and a number of positions will be up for filling. These include President, Vice President, Race Secretary and Promotional Officer, so if you have some spare ideas, enthusiasm or energy you d like to bring to the club, the committee is the place to do it. I encourage you to get involved and help out. The AGM is set for late August and the exact date and venue is yet to be confirmed. See you all at the track! Did you hear? Brad Still returned all his trophies (eventually), it became apparent that a strange trophy had turned up. After much head-scratching and discussion about the origin of this club trophy it was discovered that Brad had returned his 2014 Goldstar Trophy that he had only just received! Nice one Brad, time to get your blonde highlights re-coloured! Jessica Boniface travelled with the Devon Hotel NP Brass Band to Invercargill for the New Zealand Brass Band Championships. The band came away as NZ Champions and some individuals also secured NZ titles for solo performances! Well done to all involved. Matthew Podjursky will be competing for the first time in his Formula First racecar at Manfield on 3 August, good luck team! John Kenny is making great progress after enduring a range of surgery on different parts of his body, will be great to see you trackside again John and Isiah. We have a group of vintage karters coming to the July club day. We are hopeful about a dozen karters and their supporters will give a demo on how karting used to be done.

A shame for Thomas not to be able to defend the NZ title he won in Christchurch last year, but 2nd in both classes is still a bloody good effort. Also, well done to Jaden Ransley, one of our newest members based out of Christchurch for winning the trip to Italy to compete at the World ROK Cup! Looking forward to hearing how that trip goes. It s always good to see our drivers performing on the big stage at the National events as well as supporting our club days too. Speaking of the big stage, I have had the privilege of performing in the orchestra for the New Plymouth Operatic Phantom of the Opera show. This has been a great experience and it s been nice to blow the cobwebs out of my trumpet finally! If you haven t seen the show, go and have a look before it closes.it is very good. This weekend is Round 2 of the Winter Series, so a chance to bag some points to keep you in the trophy running. It s also the Senior 50 lapper and I believe some of the Vintage Kart lads are coming out to give a demonstration of old-school karting. Come and have a look at some of these dinosaurs, they may even let you look at their karts as well!! Another reminder about the AGM which is on in late August. We need some new blood on the committee, unfortunately the club does not run itself, so make sure you keep an eye out for the date and venue. Cheers for now.. One day little Johnny was digging a hole in his back yard. The next-door neighbour spotted him and decided to investigate. "Hello Johnny, what are you up to?" he asked. "My goldfish died and I'm gonna bury him," Johnny replied. "That's a really big hole for a goldfish, isn't it?" asked the neighbour. Yep said Johnny, that's because he's inside your cat!" The All Blacks were playing Australia and after the half-time whistle blew they found themselves ahead 50-0, Richie McCaw getting eight tries. The rest of the team decided to head for the pub instead of playing the second half, leaving Richie to go out on his own. "No worries boys," Richie told them, "I'll join you later and tell you what happened." After the game Richie headed for the pub where he told his teammates the final score: "What!!!!" said a furious Kieran Reid, "How did you let them get three points??!" Richie replied, "I got sinbinned with 20 minutes to go."
