What is important is th fact that many, many childrn today grow up in a city or urban nvironmnt with littl contact or intraction with th farms and ranchs of ystrday. Th stark rality: Evn if a child is growing up on a modrn farm or ranch, th complxitis of today s agricultur oftn prohibit much involvmnt. Instad, thos country kids ar prtty urban-frindly. That is simply a statmnt of today s world. But thos chrishd farms and ranchs still xist, and th trip back is still an opportunity. But a big caution sign nds to b in plac. "It is xtrmly important for all popl to undrstand th dangrs this may caus." For xampl, an automobil travling 55 mph will covr 400 ft (mor than th lngth of a football fild) in fiv sconds. At 65 mph, th car will travl 475 ft in fiv sconds. That mans a car travling 55 mph will tak about svn sconds to covr that 400 ft and rach a tractor or pic of farm quipmnt travling 25 mph. "As drivrs sm to b mor distractd by cllphons and txting, th liklihood of rarnding slow-moving vhicls will incras," Schmidt says.
