February/March 2014 WINSTON-SALEM SKI & OUTING CLUB Find us on: Facebook offers us additional opportunities to get information on short notice. Our official page has the club logo on the top. Newsletter of the Winston-Salem Ski & Outing Club W-SSOC Racing Team Place in Crescent Cup 14!! Report from Sixth Race (Crescent Cup), Silver Creek, WV Sat, March 8 Congratulations to our team for its excellent performance in the CSC Races #6, Crescent Cup, at Silver Creek, WV on Saturday, Our racers (Eddie Apple, Carl Karpinski, Grant McAllister, Grant McAllister III (age 10), Cathie Mulgrew and Wes Snyder; + non-racing CSC Official David Eudy) placed second, out of twelve teams competing, by only one team point, to Charlotte. Congratulations to Vance Parker, too, who got qualified and is now ready for the regular races in the season. More results from Crescent Cup: --Grant McAllister, racing in Division I, Flight 1, was first, overall, and scored 34 team points. He had the fastest two-day combined time for two runs of giant slalom and two runs of slalom, with combined time of seconds, or, 1.32 seconds ahead of the number two racer, Erik Sandstedt, of Asheville. Grant won a new pair of Atomic GS skis for winning the Combined Time. Furthermore, Grant won, outright, the two-run giant slalom race and the two-run slalom race in Flight 1. --Cathie Mulgrew finished first, overall, in Division I, Flight 4 and racked up the most team points, 35 with first and second place finishes in giant slalom and second and third place finishes in slalom. Cathie also took first place, in W-SSOC Team Season with a total of 121 points, edging second-place Wes Snyder, who finished with 117 points. Wes had the lead going in to the day s final races on the slalom course. Cathie scored a second and third place finish, for total 17 points, to overtake Wes 7 points. --Grant McAllister III ( G3, age 10), racing in Division I, Flight 5, took combined first place in the slalom races with two first place finishes, for 20 points. --Eddie Apple, racing in Division II, Flight 11, took combined second place in the giant slalom races and scored 18 points then. --Vance Parker qualified on both of his runs in giant slalom and will start the next season with handicap (continued on page 2)

President s Point Greetings. Well, it is that time again! Spring equals BOD elections. Elections will be held at the March meeting at River Ridge Tap House. We have three open positions on the board. If you are interested in serving please let a board member know come to the meeting for the election. In addition to the election we will be watching slide and video shows from our trips this year. See you there March Club Meetings & Socials Last Friday Social Friday, March 28 at 6:00pm Carolina Tap House on 4th and Spruce St Downtown Winston-Salem Special THANK YOU!! Tree Thank you so much to our dear friends in W-SSOC for all of the love and support, visits, food, s, phone calls, fruit baskets, flowers, transportations and numerous other kindnesses. It has meant a great deal to us since Pat s broken leg took a turn for the worse following surgery to add a plate to support her fibula (small leg bone), when she developed blood clots in both lungs. She is much better now, and at press time, just has gotten out of the regular cast and into a walking cast. She is looking forward to resuming bike rides and hikes soon!! Love, Ken & Pat Lumsden (continued from page 1) In the team results, W-SSOC placed first and second, for first, overall, in the two-run giant slalom races, then fifth and fourth, for sixth, overall, in slalom. In another case illustrating the importance of finishing on one s feet, especially when the team size is small, had W-SSOC realized two 6th place finishes instead of two DQs, it would have been enough to propel W-SSOC to third place in slalom, and first, overall in Crescent Cup! In other results, Asheville s Carson Oswald (an under age 12 racer) won the Male Season Championship with 177 points, edging teammate Erik Sandstedt by 1 point, and his brother, third place finisher Harrison Oswald, by 13 points. In the Female Season Championship, Charlotte s Trish Wall won with 166 points, followed by Raleigh s Jenna Christensen, who finished with 157. Carson and Trish each won a trip to the CSC Steamboat Race Camp. Crescent also awards a prize for Most Improved based on improvement of one s handicap. At press time, those results were not yet available. Watch your for off-season gatherings of W-SSOC s, especially for ski-tuning clinics to be conducted by Kyle Carroll and Wes Snyder. Wes is also interested in setting up an off-season training circuit based on inline skates (rollerblades). Thanks to all for a great season and I am already looking forward to next season. I hope you are, too! Ken Tuesdays at the Movies New schedule: Most Tuesdays, Next movie Tuesday, April 1 Meet at 7:15 pm to get popcorn for the 7:30 pm showing of Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit. We ve seen some excellent movies in February and March: Captain Phillips, Saving Mr Banks, Dallas Buyers Club and Hunger Games: Catching Fire. We re moving our bike rides to Wednesdays to make room for more movies on Tuesdays! Show times vary so watch Constant Contact s for details of the current viewing. 2

Report from February 1-8, 2014 Snowmass Success! 51 Skiers had a Great Time This year s weeklong ski trip to Snowmass, Colorado was a great week for the majority of our 52 participants. No major injuries were reported, but several skiers suffered from a cold and several more came on the trip with physical challenges, which prevented them from taking full advantage of the great conditions. The overall conditions were very good with three days of additional snow during the week freshening the slopes. Everyone skied Snowmass, smaller groups skied all four mountains, or some combination of two or three mountains. There were daily afternoon gatherings at the hot tubs for relaxation and recuperation after each day skiing. The wine and cheese party was well attended. Those present were able to see the Super Bowl on the small screen, Tree was able to stream the game on her Samsung Note. We had excellent pizza and local beer at the Wednesday night pizza party at Ryno s Pies & Pints and a lively group enjoyed good beer and great food at the Friday evening Après Ski gathering at the Base Camp Bar & Grill. The trip started out with 52 participants, but we lost one early in the trip. Unfortunately Ken, our trip administrator, had to make an emergency return, but all is well now. His wife Pat had suffered a fall on her first day skiing earlier in the month at Sugar Mountain and broke her leg. Ken s return was prompted by complications due to her surgery resulting from the fall. We are glad she is doing so well now. All participants flying in and out of Grand Junction had no delays due to the weather, but several travelers flying in and out of Aspen did. Eventually, everyone got to their destination! As usual the staff at the Tamarack Condos took excellent care of us. We will look forward to a great trip next year! Participants were: Dick & Maira Anderson, Brad & Robyn Bilfelt, Rick Brant & Tree Bright, Mike & Leanne and Wade Brendle, Barbara Braswell & Randy Reavis, Jane Conrad & Marty Diesenhof, Margo Cooper, Dave Corn, Roxanne DeJames & Jayne Warbinton, Linda Egerton (from Greensboro Ski & Outing Club), Maria Etcheverry, Ken & Kathy Furr, Elizabeth & Jason Gardner (George s daughter and son-in-law), Myriam Griffin & Andrew Rea, Tony Hanson & Cathy Hunsucker, Ben Harris, Peggie High, Lois Larson, Joe Leinster, Kevin Leinster, Carol McCall, Dennis McNeil, Debbie & Stan Mahaffey, Pat Messick, Linda Neighbors, Linda Ortiz, Marc & Sam and Max Pearce, Amy Rice (from Raleigh Ski & Outing Club), John Rosette, Elke Schoellkopf (from Spartanburg Ski Club), Don Stewart, Ken Trela, Becky Wheeler, Bracky & Janet Williams and George Wunker. Report from January 21, February 27, March 6 Day Ski Trips to Sugar and Beech There s probably no better way to enjoy skiing at NC ski areas than a mid-week day trip! At Sugar, it snowed heavily in the afternoon and added to already excellent conditions. At Beech #1, it was 15 deg F and very windy at the top, but skiing was decent. At Beech #2, temperatures hovered around the upper twenties all day and we got in lots of good skiing! Participants were: Sugar:, Ken Furr, Steve Gorham, Ken Lumsden, Vance Parker, Norma Stommel and George Wunker. Beech #1: Ken Lumsden (skier) and Jonathan Pratt (snowboarder). Check out the images of Jonathan jumping at the terrain park in this month s SKIER! Beech #2:, Steve Gorham, Ken Lumsden, Vance Parker and Becky Wheeler. We will definitely plan to do this again next year! Report from February 22 Racing Team Practices, Appalachian Mtn, On Friday, February 22, it was another beautiful night for skiing and running the gates. We had 24 participants from various Crescent clubs. W-SSOC participants included Carl Karpinski, Ken Lumsden, Grant McAllister, Grant McAllister III (G3) and Vance Parker. 3

Report from Sat.-Sun., Jan , 2014 Third Race of the Regular Season, Cataloochee, NC We bounced back at Cataloochee, but, unfortunately, so did Greensboro, so it is getting increasingly difficult to catch them. We finished 3rd in the Eastern Region on the first run on Saturday (and it was doubled to count for the second run --see below), then on the first run on Sunday and on the second run, for overall second. See attached EXCEL spreadsheet, W-SSOC Racing Team Season: Active s... for a summary of our results through Races #3. Also attached are the Crescent Results in.pdf and.xls format. The.xls version has tabs for Saturday, Sunday and Teams. The.pdf version shows the individual results rolled together and does not include the Team results. Here s our individual summary from the weekend: Div 1, Flt 1 Wes Snyder: 6th Sat, 5th after tiebreaker Sun Div 1, Flt 2-none Div 1, Flt 3-Kyle Carroll: Sat, after tiebreaker Sun Div 1, Flt 3-Carl Karpinski (Sunday, only): 3rd after tiebreaker Sun Div 1, Flt 4-Cary Popour: 5th Sat, 9th Sun Div 1, Flt 5-Cathie Mulgrew: No Show both days Div 1, Flt 6-Thomas Carroll: 4th Sat, 8th Sun Div 1, Flt 7-Eddie Apple: 6th Sat, 4th Sun Div 2, Flt 11-none Div 2, Flt 12-Ken Lumsden: Sat, Sun Div 2, Flt 13-none Div 2, Flt 14-none Div 2, Flt 15-Lynn Furner: 8th Sat, Sun Div 2, Flt 16-none Div 2, Flt 17-Carol Santos: Sat, Sun Saturday s race conditions were brutal, even after a 2-1/2 hr delay due to high winds. Eventually, they had to cancel the Div 1 race, which was supposed to be from the top of the slopes, and run it on the same slope as Div 2, the black diamond slope Alley Cat. Due the late start, and still-windy conditions, race directors voted to make each Division a one-run race. Div 2 ran its one run first, then Div 1 ran. In the scoring, (at the end of the newsletter everyone s first-run result (including points) for Saturday is doubled. This somewhat taints Ken L s 40-point weekend, as it was based on only three actual runs down the course, whereas Thomas Carroll s 40-point weekend at Sugar in Races #2, was based on four actual runs down the course. Conditions were much-improved on Sunday. Snow conditions were great; it was sunny with a light breeze. The Div 1 course started at the top of the steep black diamond slope, Omigosh, and ended soon after the slope makes a dogleg onto Rock Island. It was a tight squeeze to work the course in at the bottom third; there were a couple of close calls, but fortunately no one skied off the course into any of the nearby trees. Div 2 s course was on the same slope as Saturday: the black diamond Alley Cat. For those who have attended the CSC Steamboat Race Camp, the course was reminiscent of the NASTAR slope, Bashor: steep at the top (but a flat start, unlike Bashor s steep ramp), then gentler pitch toward the finish line. Place prizes for the first three finishers in each flight on Saturday were: : Descente padded, full-zip racing jersey; : ball cap or sun visor; 3rd: choice of TOKO ski tuning tool. Place prizes on Sunday were; : Not-Wax refill and replacement pad; : Peet Boot Dryer; 3rd: ski wax (sorry, I don t recall the brand I will have to ask Kyle). Carl Karpinski won 2 ea. 3-of-4 day lift tickets to Jackson Hole, good this season, in the drawing for door prizes on Sunday. Cary Popour would have won some Podium wax, but you must be present to win and he had already departed for home in Wilmington, NC. This race at Cataloochee was the first time Crescent has raced there. We were made to feel very welcomed by all departments. Asheville Ski Club personnel (Bobby Roland, especially) and CSC racers who are also ski instructors at Cataloochee (Rich Mead and Erik Sandstedt) were among the individuals who worked hard to make this race work. I think I can fairly say that everyone would respond well to a return to race at Cataloochee. It comes up for a vote at the CSC Spring 14 Convention. 4

5 Report from Sat.-Sun., Feb. 8-9, 2014 Fourth Race of the Regular Season, Beech Mountain It looks like we have a lock on 4th Place for the season in the Eastern Region, there being no mathematical way for us to catch up to 3rd place in the one remaining race. Nevertheless, we had some strong individual performances from several racers at Beech: Cathie Mulgrew, racing in Flight 6 was overall first with 35 points. Thomas Carroll, racing in Flight 8 contributed 25, Dena Carroll, racing in Flight 13 had 24 and Wes Snyder racing in Flight 1 had 23 (despite one DQ). Lynn Furner, racing in Flight 15, continues to be badly misplaced by the CSC handicapping system, but he is cleaning up (two first places for 20 points, total, on Sunday) while his handicap equilibrates. It is good to have Grant McAllister (Flight 1) and Grant McAllister III (G3) (Flight 7) back: both raced only one day and each scored 17 points. Report from Sat.-Sun., Feb , 2014 Fifth Race of the Regular Season, Sugar Mountain Weather was nice for both days of racing. The Div II course was in better condition than the Div I on Saturday (Div I was very icy and slick). Both courses were in good condition on Sunday. Temperatures were above freezing on both mornings and the race courses held up barely long enough to finish the races as the temperatures warmed (> 60 deg on Sunday). The Div I course had 2-ft. deep ruts at the first three gates by the end of the races on Sunday! Otherwise, the slope conditions made for nice skiing for a couple of hours after the races. Except, there were large crowds on Saturday. Sunday was much less crowded. Carol Santos (39 points) and Cathie Mulgrew (38 points) led the way as we finished 3rd and 4th on Saturday in the slalom races and 5th and 5th on Sunday in the GS races. Grant McAllister III (G3), along with Carol, had a perfect on Saturday. Final regular season places in the Eastern Division: Raleigh 338 points Greensboro 336 points Charlotte 334 points W-SSOC 312 points Greater Charleston 166 points Catawba Valley 161 points Report from Thursday, January 9, 2014 Day Ski Trip, Sugar Mountain, NC The day started out great as we arrived at the slopes and were greeted by excellent snow conditions, mild temperatures and almost no other people. However, it went downhill. Pat Lumsden, skiing last down Big Birch on the very first run of the day (and her personal first of the season), skied from some nicely groomed snow into a patch of ungroomed machine-made snow. The change in texture and stickiness suddenly slowed her skis, but not Pat, who went tumbling. What we thought was a bad sprain, turned out, after X-rays the next day, to be a nondislocated fracture of her left fibula (small leg bone), just above the ankle. Pat received excellent care in the hands of the Sugar Mountain Ski Patrol. Our friend and Crescent Ski Council Racing Chair, Ron Scott, was manning the base station that morning. Between him and Patroller Chris Harmon, Pat was able to rest comfortably while the rest of us enjoyed an otherwise really nice day of skiing at Sugar Mtn. Participants, in addition to Pat, included Carl Karpinski, Alex Karpinski,, Phyllis Hudspeth, Ken Lumsden, Vance Parker and George Wunker.
