April 2015 WINSTON-SALEM SKI & OUTING CLUB Find us on Facebook offers us additional opportunities to get information on short notice. Our official page has the club logo on the top. Newsletter of the Winston-Salem Ski & Outing Club Board Members Elected at Club Meeting Thursday, March 19, 2015 Tammy Cooper, Sharon Watson and George Wunker were elected by acclamation at the club meeting at Clemmons Bicycle. They took office on the Board of Directors at the Board meeting on April 1, Roxanne DeJames, Kathy Furr and Phyllis Hudspeth rotated off following their completed 3-year terms. The new Board of Directors will elect its officers at the BOD meeting on May 7. In other business at the club meeting, Josh Tucker, introduced us to the newest gearing sensation for mountain bikes: 1- and 2-speed front chain rings with 10- and 11-speed rear sprockets. The 1-speed version saves weight because it eliminates the need for a front shifter, cable and derailleur. Josh says just about every mountain bike he sells now is a 9er (with 29-inch wheels), and some 27.5-inch wheels. Not to worry, he can still get tires and tubes for your old 26-inch wheels. (We say, maybe it is time for an upgrade?). Josh had excellent door prizes as Pat Lumsden won another full-tune-up, George Wunker won a cycling hat, Phyllis Hudspeth won a CO2 cartridge and tire-filling appliance, Karen Vohs won a rear flashing red light and Robyn Bilfelt won the newest version of the Clemmons Bicycle tee shirt. Besides the above-named, attendees included Rick Brant, Tree Bright, Roxanne DeJames, Ken Furr, Ronnie Jones, Randy Leonard, Ken Lumsden, Pat Messick and Cathie Mulgrew. Bike Rides on Salem Creek Greenway and Around Salem Lake 6:00 PM, Wednesdays + Thursdays We had our first ride of the season on April 8. Rick Brant, Ken & Kathy Furr, Ken & Pat Lumsden and Karen Vohs (riding her new bike from Clemmons Bicycle!) rode on a Summer-like evening. The trilliums are in bloom! We were all reminded that we have a ways to go to get back into full cycling fitness! Don t wait too late to start! Plan to join us for the next ride, Wednesday, April 15. In addition to the regular Wednesday rides, 2nd through 5th Wednesday of each month, watch your for notices of rides on Thursdays. We ll ride on the First Thursday after First Wednesday each month plus occasional other Thursdays. Part (continued on page 2)

April Club Meetings/Socials Club Meeting Thursday, April 16, 2015,7:00 PM Great Outdoor Provision Company of the greenway still is rerouted due to construction on US 52, so we will continue, until further notice, to start from behind the Anderson Center at W-SSU and ride to, and around, Salem Lake. Trip Leader Pat Lumsden wssoc.org. Contact Pat or Ken Lumsden for details. Club Meeting 7:00 PM, Thursday, April 16, 2015 Come to Great Outdoor Provision Co. and learn about the latest new products for camping, hiking, backpacking and kayaking/canoeing. If you need it for the Great Outdoors, Great Outdoor Provision Co. has it! Tonight s meeting was to feature our videos, including Jesse Blair s World Premiere videos, and images from recent ski trips. That is now postponed to the next meeting, our Annual Spring Picnic at Tanglewood Park, May 21, Spelunking (Caving), Worley s Cave (a.k.a. Morrell Cave), Bluff City, TN Saturday, April 18, 2015 Here s something we haven t tried spelunking! Trip Leader Vance Parker assures us anyone can do it and there are no tight squeezes on the proposed tour. The $55-$60 tour (depends on final group size) includes helmet, headlight and tour guide. We ll see Stalagmites (upward-growing formations), Stalactites (downward-growing formations), Columns (where stalactites and stalagmites meet), Curtains and numerous other natural formations. Plan to wear long pants (ideally water-resistant), long-sleeved shirt, close-toed shoes (sandals not permitted) and gloves. Bring your camera in a Ziploc bag and bring a change of clothes (you will get muddy and maybe wet and will want to change afterward!). This event is RSVP-Required to Vance and to Ken Lumsden. Vance will already be ahead of us in TN. Contact Ken ken@wssoc.org for directions to the rendezvous point in Elizabethton, TN (with continuation to Bluff City). From W-S, we will depart from The Oaks shopping center in Lewisville (Exit #244/Williams Rd. off of US 421N) at 6:30 AM---it is nearly a 3-hr drive to Elizabethton. Contact Vance at vance@wssoc.org for details of what to expect. He will send a link to his photos on Smugmug. You can check out videos of Worley s Cave at At press-time, we have four signups. Wildflower Hike at Rock Castle Gorge, Rocky Knob, Blue Ridge Parkway, VA 8:00 AM, Sunday, April 19, 2015 This trip will combine the best of expansive views from the Parkway with beautiful wildflowers. The portion of this hike along Rock Castle Creek is a wildflower wonderland with Large-flowered Trillium, Red Erect Trillium, Showy Orchis, Fire Pink, Dwarf Iris, Virginia Bluebells, Dutchman s Breeches and Squirrel Corn, to name a few that we hope to see (see for trail map on page 9). In recent years, we ve simplified this hike by self-shuttling: we leave a car at the take-out and then drive up to Mile 168 at Saddle Overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway, near Rocky Knob, to start the hike. This shaves four miles off the round-trip distance yielding a 6.8-mile hike! We ll depart from near the gas pumps at Sam s at Northpoint (University Parkway) by 8:00 AM. Bring water, lunch, hiking shoes, spare jacket and camera! Contact Tree Bright Tree@wssoc.org if you have questions. 2

We ll begin receiving deposits and Trip Applications for W-SSOC Beaver Creek 16 and Salt Lake City 16! We ll show images and videos and have a grand ol time! See you there! News from 2015 Ski Vacations (and upcoming 2016!) Salt Lake City 15, Tuesday, March 10-Sunday, March 15, Spring-like conditions prevailed on yet another ski vacation! We enjoyed decent Spring skiing conditions even new snow one day at Brighton, Snowbird, Alta and Solitude. Whereas last year, our favorites were, in order, Brighton, Snowbird, Alta and Solitude, this season the favorites were, in a flip-flop, Alta, Solitude, Brighton and Snowbird. On the snowy Wednesday at Snowbird, we had frequent poor visibility and fog until late in the afternoon. And, an odd snow it was, by any standards, much less Utah-standards: one minute it was powdery, the next gloppy, then pellety then corn-snowy. Despite the variability, it did help the on-snow conditions. At Solitude, conditions were nice for excursions into Honeycomb Canyon. On the Sol- Bright trail, where you can ski from Solitude to Brighton and back to Solitude, one section about 50 yd long had thin cover, but was otherwise skiable and beautiful in the aspen forest just before re-entering Solitude. We enjoyed our direct flights, CLT-SLC-CLT, and accommodations at Crystal Inn-Murray. Participants were Robyn Bilfelt, Mike, Leanne and Wade Brendle, Tree Bright, Ken & Carolyn Carpenter, Helene and Micaela Elbein, Bill Hardin, Ronnie Jones, Ken Lumsden, Linda Ortiz, Randy Reavis, David Taylor and George Wunker. For our old friend David, a past president of W-SSOC who hadn t skied since 2006, it was just like riding a bicycle---you never forget how to do it! Tree left the trip early, as a precaution, after suffering a concussion in a fall at Snowbird. Good thing Tree was wearing her helmet! On the Sunday of our departure, Ronnie and George decided to work in a ½ day of skiing in the morning at Solitude. By their account, it appears we had the LAST FOUR GOOD DAYS OF SKIING in Utah on our prior Wednesday-Saturday, as yesterday s soft, skiable, snow, (continued on page 4)

(continued from page 3) began to give way to brown spots and sticky/grabby snow. CSC Steamboat Race & Ski Camp, Steamboat, CO, December 5-12, This trip is operated by the Crescent Council and on-site led by W-SSOC s Cathie Mulgrew. You are eligible! Crescent usually begins taking sign-ups/ deposits beginning at the CSC Spring Convention (April 23-26, 2015). It continues to attract 250+ participants. W-SSOC s participants on the 2014 version included Brad & Robyn Bilfelt, Ken & Kathy Furr, Linda Ortiz & George Wunker, Peggie High, Jane Conrad, and Cathie Mulgrew. Ask any of them and they will tell you what a great value this trip is. Peggie likes it to jump-start her regular ski season. She and Jane have been taking lessons from Instructor Gretchen for the last 5 years in a row! CSC Mt Bachelor, Oregon, January 16-23, All W- SSOC members are eligible for this Crescent Ski Council trip. Watch for details, soon. W-SSOC Beaver Creek 16, January 30-February 6, 2016 (mistakenly reported as January 31 last month). Bring your checkbook to the club picnic at Tanglewood on May 21, 2015, where we ll begin taking sign-ups! We re holding 52 lodging spaces at the Borders Lodge (condos), slopeside at the Elkhorn Lift, and 45 air seats, GSO-ORD-DEN-ORD-GSO. W-SSOC Flexible Trip, March 3-8, We ve had great success with this trip (two years in a row!) and are going for three! Due to the quirks of the calendar, both the Beaver Creek trip and the Salt Lake trip are shifted one week earlier than the equivalent 2015 trips. We hope to have details by the May 21 club meeting. Meanwhile, you already know about what to expect: ground transfers SLC-Crystal Inn-SLC, 5 nights double-occupancy lodging with full buffet breakfast and light dinner daily at the Crystal Inn-Murray, 4-day Super Pass (includes bus transportation to slopes and lift tickets good at any combination of Alta, Snowbird (including Tram), Brighton and Solitude). Where to ski?? It is hard to tell. In 2014, our favorites, more or less in order, were Brighton, Snowbird, Alta and Solitude. In 2015 it was almost the opposite: Alta, Solitude, Brighton and Snowbird! Rest assured, whichever order you choose, you will have great skiing! CSC Big Sky, Montana, March 19-26, Crescent Ski Council will offer Big Sky in You are eligible. Watch for details. Bike/Barge Trip 16. Crescent Ski Council will offer a European bike/barge trip in You are eligible. Watch for details. OR. Greek Island Cruise 16. Crescent Ski Council will offer a cruise to the Greek Islands in You are eligible. Watch for details. This, and the Bike/Barge trip, were reported as AND last month. The Crescent Trips Committee will choose between these two options at its meeting at the Crescent Spring 15 Convention (meeting on April 25, 2015). Report from W-SSOC Racing Team Kudos to W-SSOC Racers! Thomas Carroll (age 16) placed second in the Crescent Ski Council s competition for the Male Season Points Championship with 187 Season Points and second (754 Season Points) in the competition for Male Most Improved Racer! Both of these competitions combine excellence in ski racing with participation in the races. So, these rankings attest not only to Thomas ski racing abilities and improvement over the course of the season, but also to his dedication to our team Thomas raced in every single race this season! (Cathie Mulgrew is our only other racer who raced in every race). In giant slalom racing, Thomas had three perfect 20-point performances and two 19-point performances, See the summary of our racers season performances elsewhere in this SKIER. The W-SSOC Racing Team welcomes racers, and aspiring racers, of all abilities. If you want to find out if ski racing is for you, contact Ken Lumsden Ken@wssoc.org or Kyle Carroll Kyle@wssoc.org. We were also well represented at the NASTAR National Championships on March at Snowmass, CO. Carol Santos won Gold in the Bronze Division for Female 4

May-June, CONTENTS Age and placed 3rd in the Bronze Division Race of Champions; Cary Popour took 6th place in the Gold Division for Male Age 55-59; and Wes Snyder took 3rd in the Gold Division for Male Age Here s a summary of the Crescent Ski Council s Team, which placed 14th overall, at the NASTAR National Championships. Check out details at See W-SSOC Season Results on page 7. See Crescent NASTAR National Championship Results on page 9 Report from Burgers & Brews at Vance Parker s House Saturday, March 21, 2015 This started as a Racing Team gathering, then we thought it would be a good idea to expand it to the entire club, and then we thought it would be a good idea to invite some of Vance s friends who might be potential members (skiers, hikers, kayakers and cyclists among them!). We enjoyed local brews, great burgers (cooked by Vance out on the grill) and plenty of appetizers and desserts and good company. Forty attendees included Dick & Maira Anderson, John & Wendy Barrow, Jesse Blair, Ricky Blizzard, Rick Brant, Barbara Braswell & Randy Reavis, Dena & Kyle Carroll, Peggy Carter, Tammy Cooper, Vaso & Jason Eckstein and their kids Ben and Sofia, Raina Haque, Phyllis & Bob Hudspeth, Doug Kon, Shelly Leighton, Pat & Ken Lumsden, Marshall Marvelli, Martha Ann McDonald, Ray Mitchell, Cathie Mulgrew, Frances Mundy & Ronnie Jones, Vance Parker, Mack Roebuck, Mike Shipko and daughter Leah, Alan Trogdon and daughter Jacoby, Karen Vohs, Carol Westmoreland, Marcy Wood and George Wunker. Report from Walk in Old Salem Wednesday, March 25, 2015 This was a perfect evening for our first Walk of the Spring. We started at the parking lot by the tennis courts on Salem Avenue, strolled up Main St., then moved one block east onto Church Street and continued through the Moravian Cemetery to Cemetery Ave., returned via a circuitous route through the cemetery and then back to our cars. Attendees included Pat Lumsden (leader), Ken Lumsden, Jeannette Romaniello, Robert Romaniello, Leanne Brendle and Wade Brendle (who got to ride most of the way in his high-tech stroller), Sam Pearce and Max Pearce (also got to ride most of the way in his high-tech stroller), Tammy Cooper, Margo Cooper and Karen Vohs. Report from Last Friday Old Nick s Pub, Lewisville Friday, March 27, 2015 Old Nick s is a pleasant place to gather to enjoy local and NC brews. They have darts, billiards and TVs and comfy chairs for sitting around and socializing. Attendees included Rick Brant & Tree Bright, Ken & Carolyn Carpenter, Peggy Carter, Roxanne DeJames, Pat Messick, Vance Parker, Randy Reavis, Ken & Pat Lumsden. Helene & Micaela Elbein came, too, but soon departed since Nick s doesn t serve food, the age limit is 21, so 19-yr old Micaela couldn t stay. This was the only negative at Nick s Sorry about that, Micaela! Reports from Easter Hikes Easter Weekend April 3-6, 2015 We went on two day hikes: to Hanging Rock State Park on Friday morning and Pilot Mountain State Park on Sunday. We had great weather for both hikes and, for both, the wildflowers are just now beginning to come out. At Hanging Rock, we started at the Visitor Center and hiked to The Hanging Rock, then completed a loop via the Wolf Rocks Trail to the lake and back to the Visitor Center, for about (continued on page 6)

(continued from page 5) 4.5 miles round trip. Participants at Hanging Rock included: Matt Berry (whom we serendipitously encountered just as we started our hike!), Peggy Carter, Tammy Cooper, Ken & Pat Lumsden, Linda Monciel, Karen Vohs and Sharon Watson. On Sunday afternoon at Pilot Mountain, our group got fragmented when we arrived and found there was a line waiting to get into the upper parking lot. Frances Mundy and Ronnie Jones decided to try their luck, instead, at Stone Mountain State Park. Brent & Beverly Rockett and Jonathan & Cammie Hale decided to hike up from the base of the mountain via the Grindstone Trail. The rest of us got to park after about 20-minute wait, then hiked the Grindstone/ Ledge Spring Trail downhill to where Ledge Spring Trail splits off, continued uphill on the Ledge Spring Trail, where there were numerous groups of rock climbers in action, to the saddle on the Jomeoke (Big Pinnacle) Trail, then completed the loop of the Jomeoke Trail and the side trail to the Little Pinnacle Overlook, for something over 4 miles of hiking. Participants on this version of our day included Peggy Carter, Tammy Cooper, Margo Cooper, Barbara Freiberg, Ken Lumsden and Karen Vohs. Report from Tulips & Daffodils Walk at Reynolda Gardens 6 PM, Thursday, April 9, 2015 Unlike the above two hikes at Easter, the wildflowers are already in full bloom at Reynolda Gardens. We saw Yellow Trillium (Trillium luteum), violets, bleeding heart (in the garden) and daffodils, to name a few. In an added bonus, we saw the resident Pileated Woodpecker (looks like Woody Woodpecker!). This was a weather-permitting walk, and, WOW, did the weather ever barely permit this walk! Upon hearing thunder, we headed for the cars and were all safely headed home when the deluge hit. Participants included Peggy Carter, Tammy Cooper, Barbara Freiberg, Ken Lumsden, Pat Lumsden, Jeannette Romaniello, Karen Vohs and Sharon Watson. Report from Hike at Stone Mountain State Park 10 AM, Sunday, April 12, 2015 We had three separate parties and four different itineraries, but managed to meet everyone at one time or another! Participants included Leanne Brendle, Wade Brendle, Tammy Cooper, Margo Cooper, Meghan Cooper, Ronnie Jones, Ken Lumsden, Sam Pearce, Max Pearce, Jeannette Romaniello and Sharon Watson. Tammy, Ronnie, Ken, Jeannette and Sharon got things started by hiking from the Lower Parking Lot, via Hutchinson Homestead, to the Stone Mountain Falls. On the way, we spotted significant populations of the rare wildflower, Fringed polygala, also know as Gay Wings. We found Northern white violets, Common blue violets, (yellow) Halberdleaved violets, Trailing arbutus and numerous fern fiddleheads. Margo and Meghan caught up with us at the Falls, but had to return from there. The rest of us then hiked to Cedar Rock where we enjoyed lunch, watching the buzzards soar, and the full view of the front face of Stone Mountain from here, you can see the hikers all the way at the top, a portion of the mountain not visible from the meadow at Hutchinson Homestead! We then continued to the huge expanse of bare rock at Wolf Rock. Ronnie had to depart just as Leanne, Wade, Sam and Max caught up to us. This was a big hike nearly 3 miles round trip--for Max and Wade, but they did great! No more strollers for them, as both hiked the entire way without having to be carried by their moms. Both helped keep us on track by spotting the red-square trail blazes on the return to the Lower Parking Lot. Afterward, we all enjoyed ice cream at the Stone Mountain Country Store. 6

Report from Tuesday Night at the Movies Marketplace Cinema, March 10, 17, 24, 31 and April 7, 2015 Recent viewings include WILD, INTO THE WOODS, THE IMITATION GAME, TAKEN3, BIRDMAN and SELMA. BIRDMAN really split our group literally as three of our participants walked out (just as this unappealing movie was about to begin to redeem itself ha!) Everyone liked WILD, but for different reasons the backpacking/survival side was appealing for some while it was the story of personal redemption that appealed more to others. Everyone thought THE IMITATION GAME (about Alan Turing, the British mathematician who broke the German Enigma codes in WWII) was an excellent film. INTO THE WOODS got mixed reviews and TAKEN3 was about what that franchise led us to expect---but a pretty good police drama and shoot- em-up at that. We all thought every citizen should see SELMA and now understand why there were such loud complaints when SELMA was not mentioned for any Oscars. Recent participants have included Barbara Braswell, Peggy Carter, Margo Cooper, Tammy Cooper, Ken & Kathy Furr, Bob Hudspeth, Ken & Pat Lumsden, Vance Parker, Randy Reavis, Jeannette & Robert Romaniello, Norma Stommel & Bill Luft, Sharon Watson, Becky Wheeler and George Wunker. Come join us! It s fun, it s always worth $2 and the popcorn is tasty. 8
