REPORT FROM January 26-February 2 New Snow Graces W-SSOC Breckenridge 13 Ski Vacation Snow conditions improved from the minute we arrived in Breckenridge. Beginning the night of Saturday, January 26, new snow graced the slopes every day of our trip! The 3-5 inches received the first night made for very enjoyable skiing conditions for our Mountain Tour. (continued on page 2)... Find us on: Facebook offers us additional opportunities to get information on short notice. Our official page has the club logo on the top.

2 President s Point Greetings All, Yes, it is that time again, election time and we are looking for members willing to serve. If you are interested in helping organizing our outings please contact me. We meet once a month and have fun, lots of comradere and laughing, while we handle club business and plan outings. If you are new to the club this is a great way to become more aquainted with your fellow WSSOCers, if you are a long time member, your expereinces are a valuable asset we would love to have. So, come join the fun. We took the bus to Vail on Monday, where they had received more than Breck on Saturday night and it continued to snow while we were there. Snow squalls made it sometimes blustery and blowing much of the day but there was continuously fresh snow on the slopes. Milton & Sara Peddycord s daughter, Megan, who now lives in Denver, skied with us at Breck on Sunday and led us at Vail on Monday. Our Lifetime W-SSOC Member and friend, Steve Smith, also skied with us Sunday-Tuesday. Steve always started out with the main group, then splintered off with those who wanted ski fast, or in the trees. Our W-SSOC friends, Beverly & Brent Rockett and Kathy Smith & Ron Rumberger had arranged their time-share condo visit to coincide with our trip, so we got to ski and socialize with them all week. Tree On Tuesday, when many skiers took a day off and enjoyed such attractions as the Snow Sculpture exhibit in downtown, the rest of us skied at Keystone. Monday night had delivered only about 1 inch of new snow and temperatures ranged between 2 deg and 8 deg F. But, there was no wind and the sky was a beautiful blue, so it was a great day for skiing. 2

3 3 Our snowmobiling aficionado, Don Miller, whose excursion consisted of only himself and the guide, reported getting a glimpse of a mountain lion on Tuesday. On Wednesday, Nicki Grupka, Paul Burford, Jesse Blair and George Wunker were among those who returned to Vail while the remainder skied at Breckenridge. More snow and stormy conditions at both resorts kept the skiing nice, but face protection was a must! We took our private bus to Beaver Creek on Thursday and enjoyed the best snow conditions of the week 3 to 6 inches of new snow the night before and another inch through early afternoon! It was a beautiful afternoon after the sun came out. Everyone loved Beaver Creek so much we are considering a club trip there for 2015! The last day at Breck, it snowed even more and was stormy again until mid afternoon. There was a great time at non-skiing activities, too. We had a wine & cheese party on Sunday, Linda Ortiz led après-ski yoga classes and we went to Fatty s on Lincoln Ave. for our private pizza party on Tuesday night (with snow falling heavily), watched the UNC basketball game at Eric s on Wednesday, enjoyed heavy hors d hoeuvres at Coppertop at Peak 9 on Friday and then our Leftovers Party that evening. The Beaver Run Resort and Conference Center turned out to be a very enjoyable destination, once we learned our way around and found all of the amenities saunas, hot tubs, heated swimming pool, game rooms, restaurants and shops. Participants included Maira & Dick Anderson, Jesse Blair, Tree Bright & Rick Brant, Paul Burford, Barbara Braswell & Randy Reavis, Dave Corn, John Davis, Jen Fahey & Randy Welch, Kathy & Ken Furr, Myriam Griffin, Nicki Grupka, Peggie High, Phyllis Hudspeth, Cathy Hunsucker & Tony Hanson, Ronnie Jones & Frances Mundy, Doug Kon, Joe Leinster, Janet & Randy Leonard, Pat & Ken Lumsden, Joe Mahonchak & Mag Pike, Carol McCall, Renee Mercer & Keith Phillips, Pat Messick, Don Miller, Linda Ortiz, Sara & Milton Peddycord, Megan Peddycord, Pamela Pelletier, Beverly & Brent Rockett, John Rosette, Kathy Smith & Ron Rumberger, Steve Smith, Don Stewart, Ken Trela, Becky Wheeler and George Wunker. REPORT FROM Wednesday, February 20 Ski Trip to Beech It was more like winter on our make-up day skiing trip to Beech Mtn! Weather was seasonably cold (teens) and breezy and the slopes snowy. 12 W-SSOCers, including Eddie Apple, Tammy Cooper, Kathy Furr, Ken Furr, Ronnie Jones, Doug Kon (snowboarder), Ken Lumsden, Debbie Maggio, Martha Ann Moser McDonald, John Rosette, Becky Wheeler and George Wunker enjoyed a fun and uncrowded day on the slopes. Becky hosted our lunch at the Beech Mtn Club, and later, après ski at her home. Great views and great stories made it the perfect way to wind down after a day on the slopes. Thanks so much Becky! We highly recommend midweek skiing/boarding! Watch the SKIER and Constant Contact for a return trip. REPORT FROM Thursday, February 21 February Club Meeting Quite a crowd showed up at Barnill s Books, Wine, Art and Gifts for this month s club meeting. The local bookstore/variety store features wines from over 40 North Carolina vineyards as well as consignment items from local artisans and books from local authors. In the back of the store, a wine tasting was held with such interesting flavors as the chocolate and strawberry dessert-like wines. This one had several members planning a future all girl s dessert night and recipe swap at Karen Vohs house. On the other side of the room, enthusiasm mounted for a possible 2015 Vail/Beaver Creek trip and for the upcoming Duke vs UNC basketball showdown. Stay tuned to where that showdown s gonna go down! Members attending were Robyn Bilfelt, Mike & Leanne Brendle, Tammy Cooper, John Davis, Ken & Kathy Furr, Ken & Pat Lumsden, Paul & Debbie Maggio, Janet Orlando, Randy Reavis, Brent & Beverly Rockett, Mike Shipko and daughter Leah, our newest club member and Racing Team member Wes Snyder, Don & Deni Stewart, Karen Vohs, Sharon Watson and George Wunker.

7 7 REPORT FROM February 9-10, 2013 W-SSOC Tastes Past Glory Wins Giant Slalom Races at Crescent Races #4, Beech Mtn, NC WE WON the EASTERN DIVISION on Sunday!! Dena Carroll and Carl Karpinski paced the team with two first place finishes, each! We took second place on the first run and first place on the second, for overall first place. We managed this even with the 0.9 Team Size Factor. Due to having between 6 and 9 racers, our team average score was discounted by 0.9. Sunday, GS Races First Second Run Run = 20 points/1st place Flt 14-Dena Carroll = 20 points/1st place Flt 6-Carl Karpinski = 17 points/2nd place Flt 4-Cary Popour = 14 points/4th place Flt 7-Eddie Apple = 14 points/4th place Flt 11-Ken Lumsden = 11 points/6th place Flt 3-Kyle Carroll = 10 points/6th place Flt 12-Thomas Carroll Team score is tabulated per run. First run: 51/7 x 0.9 Team Size Factor = 6.56 Team Average for 2nd place = 19 Team Points. Second run: 55/7 x 0.9 Team Size Factor = 7.07 Team Average for 1st place = 20 Team Points. Total Team points = 39 of maximum possible 40, for first place, overall, on Sunday. This is a good illustration of the 4th Place Rule. A team who averages 4th place (7 points per racer) often can win the races. After the 0.9 discount, our team averages were 6.56 (2nd place) in the first run and 7.07 (1st place) in the second run. In Saturday s Slalom races, we came in 4th in the Eastern Division on both runs, for 4th overall. Our newest racers, Grant McAllister Jr and Grant McAllister III ( G3 ) raced in their first regular Crescent races. Saturday, Slalom Races First Second Run Run = 20 points/1st place Flt 11-Ken Lumsden = 14 points/4th place Flt 12-Thomas Carroll = 11 points/5th place Flt 1-Grant McAllister Jr = 10 points/6th place Flt 3-Kyle Carroll = 9 points/4th place Flt 17-George Wunker = 8 points/8th place Flt 4-Cary Popour = 6 points/9th place Flt 4-Grant McAllister III = 5 points/7th place Flt 7-Eddie Apple First run: 40/8 x 0.9 Team Size Factor = 4.5 Team Average for 4th place = 17 Team Points. Second run: 43/8 x 0.9 Team Size Factor = 4.84 Team Average for 4th place = 17 Team Points.
