COB VETTE NEWS Since 1981 Volume, 35 Issue 3 March 2016 Notes from the President On behalf of our members, I would personally would like to thank Bruce and Lynda Graham for graciously chairing our Annual February Pizza and Wings party after the general club meeting. I believe we had 81 members and prospectives present. In addition, thank you to Bruce, Rich Z, and Dick Brownlee for submitting their entries for the club's 35th Anniversary static cling contest. Congratulations to Dick on the winning entry. All members will receive a static cling to proudly display on their Corvette. I would also like to thank Skip and members of the Finance committee for their hard work in preparing our club budget for 2016, approved by the members. At the February meeting, several sign-up sheets we distributed for Corvette events held out of town. Blocks of rooms are reserved for a limited time at hotels near these venues. If you did not get a chance to sign up, these sheets will be displayed at the March meeting. Rooms are subject to availability. If you know of a show, cruise or event that COB may be interested in, we are planning an activity meeting Wednesday, March 16 at 6:00 PM in Wheatfield, NY. If you can't make the meeting no problem, pass the info on the event to an officer or board member for inclusion on our calendar of events. Ray and Debbie Schafer have been handling refreshments at club meetings for some time including our upcoming March meeting. For future meetings we are looking for a few volunteers to set up beverages and snacks. Anyone interested in helping out let me know. Finally, if you did not sign up for our Spring Dinner on Saturday, March 19, the cutoff date is March 1st, contact Bob Kaczmarek ASAP. 3 Winter Cruise Dinner at La Tolteca Restaurant What a great time 23 of us had at this authentic Mexican Restaurant. They had a private room all setup for us, the décor was fantastic with a real Mexican flare( some of us wanted to take a few of the wall décor home with us ). Happy Hour happened to be on this Wednesday night with $4.00 Margaretta s. Mike even tried one and said it was ok (ha-ha). The food was delicious with large portions, so as far as we know no one went home hungry. Even the weather cooperated with no more snow. The roads were in great shape, and yes it was cold but a clear night. Corvettes of Buffalo and food makes for a great combination. Thanks to all who attended. Mike and Lee 3

Prospective Member Article Hello Corvettes of Buffalo club members, My name is David Spencer and I d be honored to join your club. I live way out in Delevan and am the proud owner of a 2014 Velocity Yellow Z51 Stingray coupe (Stingray on the hood and windshield) with HOTRODC7 plates. That, plus a 1941 Packard, and a Yamaha motorcycle, are my vehicles of choice for a warm sunny day. My wife Marcia though, seems to prefer our more subtle Honda CRV or Jeep, but maybe it s my driving. I have been a Corvette enthusiast for many years and previously owned a customized yellow 1971 LT1 Roadster. I was also a member of the WNYCC and a charter member of the COB when it formed. Photography is in my blood, and I love to shoot Canon stills at car shows and events. My lovely family includes in-laws, sons, daughters, and grandkids, and for some reason I am called the family paparazzi. While I do love Corvettes, any vehicle with 2, 3, or 4, or more wheels interests me. Diecast, mainly 1:18 scale, tend to occupy my spaces at home, should that be a hobby any of you enjoy. Having recently retired from the West Valley Demonstration Plant, I now have more time to attend car and social events. So, if you will have me, I d like to become a C.O.B. member and learn about you and your wheels. Thank you for this consideration. If you decide to open a Cleveland branch of the club, be advised that my grandson Nicholas has expressed a healthy interest in Corvettes. He has a Z06 bed, Corvette sandbox, remote controlled C7 and several Corvette Matchbox cars that he s willing to share. Oh.and also his new red C7. So far, he has no points on his license, but he did bump a tree once. 4

Reprinted with the permission of: National Corvette Museum FOUR 2016 COLORS ON THE CHOPPING BLOCK Chevrolet has already said goodbye to two of the 2016 Corvette colors, and has now announced two more on the chopping block. The last Night Race Blue rolled off the assembly lines in Bowling Green on January 7, a Z06 Coupe for export. This is to be followed by the last Daytona Sunrise Orange Metallic, rolling off the line on Monday, February 15 a Stingray Z51 Coupe. Next to leave the color line-up for 2016 are Shark Gray and Laguna Blue. Shark Gray is slated to phase out in May and the last day to order it will be April 15. Laguna Blue will phased out with the end of the 2016 model year. The last day to order it is April 28. At least over the last decade, I do not recall GM dropping this many colors in a single year, said Museum Delivery Program Manager, Shane Webb. I don t have exact statistics, but it s definitely a rarity to have this much change. It s puzzling to many within the Corvette world because Shark Gray was the third most popular color for both the Stingray and Z06 for Chevrolet has not yet said what prompted the particulars colors to get the ax, nor have they announced the 2017 model-year line up, but you can bet there will be samples of any newbies at the Michelin NCM Bash April If you haven t registered yet, you can do so online here. MARCH TRIVIA QUESTION 1. What were the only two options offered on the 1953 Corvette? 2. What movie was Marilyn Monroe making when she died? 3. How fast can the new C7 Stingray go in reverse? 4. What is Fats Domino's real first name? 5. How many exterior colors of blue were offered in 1967? ANSWERS ON PAGE 12 6

Reprinted from: / Posted on Dec 7, 2015 By Luz Boyer Kill the Corvette? He Said NO! The Russ McLean Story Believe it or not folks, there was once the possibility of no more Corvettes. According to Hemmings Daily, A management change brought with it a new order from GM s board of directors: Stop development on the Corvette and let it sunset. As consumers, enthusiasts, and drivers all we can say to that board of directors is Boooo! Luckily, there was someone with a broader vision to speak not only for all of us but for the future of Corvette. His name is Russ McLean, and this year he was rightfully inducted into the National Corvette Museum Hall of Fame. As the Corvette Program Manager in the 1990s, McLean took a stand and decided not to follow orders when he was told to let the Corvette die. Regretfully, Corvette was losing money at a rate of $1,000 per car. The video tells the story of McLean s efforts to keep the Thrill of the Ride alive and take it to new heights. According to GM Authority and no news to us, the Corvette C4 generation was a dark time for the vehicle. It was an unprofitable venture for General Motors despite the ZR1 trim. McLean took a stand to the executives who wanted to kill the Corvette after the C4. He understood the history behind Corvette and simply would not and did not allow it to happen. At a time when GM was suffering from financial difficulties and continuous reorganization, McLean decided to isolate the Corvette team. He established a stable organizational structure independent from GM s unreliable structure. In doing so, he was able to make the necessary changes to improve the Corvette s quality and reduce overall costs. McLean led Corvette to make a profit within his first year running the program. Once the fourth generation Corvette was stable, McLean focused on developing the C5, which at the time, GM had already approved. McLean stated, As a manager, I believe in doing the right things rather than doing things right. The Corvette was always the innovation leader for General Motors and the world, and that innovation flowed into so many other cars. So, when somebody told me to let that icon die, I just couldn t let that happen it was not the right thing to do. 7

From then on, McLean worked almost incognito. He kept the Corvette platform team running in silence, not asking permission for anything they did and avoiding contact and communication with his boss and GM management, Hemmings Daily added. After rounding up funds from wherever possible, McLean and his team built a test vehicle and invited executives to drive it. The car was not only deemed worthy of production, but the new Corvette C5 would go on to become Motor Trend s 1998 Car of the Year, according to GM Authority. McLean s triumph did not come without repercussions. In his evaluations, it was stated that he was not a team player and did not follow directions. Yes, I lost out on promotions after that, Mc Lean added. He left the Corvette team in 1996 and GM entirely in It is only appropriate that Russ McLean is officially inducted into the National Corvette Museum Hall of Fame. According to GM Authority, the Corvette C5 was even more important than some may think. The C5 platform set the blueprints for the C6 and the 2015 C7 Sting Ray that was to follow in the coming decade. There is no question that America s favorite sports car still exists because of the tenacity of a man who would not give up on a great concept and a great car. We will reserve our thoughts to the GM s management team of the time, and will close by simply saying: Thank You Mr. McLean and Godspeed! 10 1964 Corvette Convertible Restoration Update #3 This month we will prep the new one piece front end and the body for assembly. Steve, the owner bought the new front clip on line and it looked very good when we opened the large box it was shipped in. Hopefully, it would fit and line up with hood, headlight buckets, and existing body. To start we had to grind the old glue from the car body, and rough the area on the new front clip where it is to be assembled on the car. When putting a new front clip on an old body you only get one chance to get it right because once it is glued in place you own it. The next step was to put the new front inner fenders in place on the body. Everything is built from them and the hood hinges are mounted in place. The new clip is slid over the inner fenders and cut to match the old body near the windshield. We made the cuts and adjustments to where the clip and body will be mated. The new clip is now in place so we screwed it down and put the hood on to see if it fits in the hood hole. There was a1/2 inch gap between the front opening and hood. To correct this problem we had to take the clip and inner fenders off and elongate the holes to move the inner fenders forward 1/2 inch. We put it back together and this closed the gap and the hood now fits the hole excellently. We had to install the headlight buckets to see how they match the new clip and they did. We know that everything fits good so it is screwed in place and tape is placed on the new clip, body, and doors for alignment with a pencil mark. The tape is cut when the car is taken apart and stays with the clip and body. This is the point that it all comes apart and the epoxy is applied to the new clip and inner fenders. The clip is slid in place and lined up with the tape pencil marks and screwed together for the last time. We had to do this last step fast before the epoxy dries Next article we will start the fiber glass work to mate the new clip to the car body. This new season of AMERICARNA offers more exclusive, captivating stories than ever before, said Robert Scanlon, General Manager of Velocity and Automotive Content. He has greater access to industry insiders and headline makers to bring extraordinary stories to the AMERICARNA series. I can t wait for Velocity s viewers to come along with me for another season of exploring the most interesting car stories America has to offer, said Evernham. 21 Muscle Car City -- Punta Gorda, Florida Muscle Car City [ is the venue that is attracting thousands of people who harken back to the golden days of muscle cars and their youth. It's also drawing a newer generation of enthusiasts. The man responsible for this impressive display of steel and chrome is Rick Treworgy, a longtime Punta Gorda resident, real estate developer and partner in a number of local restaurant enterprises. As he collected more and more cars, he ran out of storage space in a number of warehouses where his prized possessions were often stacked to the ceiling. Occasionally, he would invite fellow car people over to have a look. So what is a person to do when he runs out of room to keep his collection? Buy an old Wal-Mart, of course. Treworgy has transformed the building, vacated when Wal-Mart moved to a larger facility nearby, into what the brochure says is "possibly the largest GM muscle car collection in the nation." A quick check on the Web seems to confirm his contention. A muscle car museum in Sevierville, Tenn., boasts 90 cars and other collections are not nearly as specialized. April Treworgy, who is the manager of her father's museum, said there are currently 174 cars on display, with another 45 or so stored off site. The plan is to rotate the collection at the museum to keep the display fresh. The facility also boasts a '50s-style diner complete with chairs upholstered in red and white vinyl, a gift shop filled with lots of car stuff, including models in various sizes, and a parts store. Plans call for a fullservice restaurant to be added in the near future. But the real show is the cars, Camaros, Chevelles, El Caminos, Impalas, GTOs, Olds 442s and his favorite, the Corvettes. His daughter says he's partial to the '67 model, since that was the year he graduated from high school. Everyone is in perfect condition and appears ready to take on the road at a moment's notice. The cars look as new as when they graced the showroom floor. Some still have the price sticker attached. DB (from Mary Ann s brother in Winter Haven, FL) Control/click turn volume up : 21
