1 COB VETTE NEWS Since 1981 Volume, 36 Issue 9 Notes from the President A lot of major activities took place in the month of August. Unfortunately, the weather did not cooperate for the annual cruise at St Gabriel's on August 4. I hear a few members attended the event conducted indoors. On Saturday, August 5 a group of 13 cars traveled to Van Bortel Chevrolet in Macedon, NY for the annual Corvette Cruise-In. Sunday, we had over 15 cars at the Paddock Super Cruise in Kenmore. Thank you to the members who helped park cars with over 400 cruisers present. On Monday was the annual Taste of Clarence, which had a low turnout due to the weather. On the 13th of August was our annual club picnic. Thank you Harry & Lorry Kwiek for chairing this event. The food was great and everyone I talked to had a great time. We had a record number in attendance of 114 members, prospectives, and guests. At the picnic, we also added three new members. Congratulations to Glenn and Sandy Gibson and Marty Link. Next up was a couple of "cruises of the week" and the monthly cars & coffee at Eastern Hills for the month of August. The month wrapped up with members traveling to the NCCC convention in Bowling Green, KY, Corvettes of Carlisle, and the Vermont trip. I look forward to hearing about these events at the September meeting, which had been moved to September 16, same time and place. As a reminder, your club dues for next year are due. Make out your check to Corvettes of Buffalo. Finally we will open up nominations for officers for next year. Hope to see you at the meeting. Frank September 2017 What s Happening This Month See page three. Meeting changed to September 16 th Third Saturday ************************ Club dues are due this month! 8 Miniatur Wunderland, Hamburg, Germany The World s Largest Model Railroad Remember the two brothers, in Germany, who had a wonderful model railway that was something to see? This is an update of their German Wonderland. A short review. It was started by two brothers as a place to show their hobby and began to grow by leaps & bounds. Soon they were joined by other Model Railroad Clubs' and other craftsmen. Some were electricians, model makers, carpenters, computer programmers. Their wives would stop by to see what they were doing and usually bring them a lunch. One thing led to another. Three of the ladies had worked at a bakery, several visitors would ask if they had a snack bar. The idea was planted; some of the carpenters came and built a nice restaurant area for the bakery and a kitchen, too. If the fresh coffee smell didn't get you, then the bakery definitely would. Over 400,000-man hours were spent making this dream come true. This was about 5 years ago. One of the breweries came and furnished all the tables and chairs, serving counter etc. Their latest finished area is the airport. Planes look like they are flying and landing. 11 Restoration of 1966 Corvette #2 This month Nick (my son) and I are working on the brake system, and rear suspension. We decided that it would be a good thing to be able to stop our car. To do this task the whole system would be replaced with new SS steel lines, calipers, pads, hoses, emergency shoes, and a dual master cylinder, (used on newer corvettes). We had to remove all the old rusted and dirty parts form this 51-year-old car. To get at the emergency brakes the axle spindles had to be taken out to be replaced with all news parts. This was a good time to repack the spindle bearing and check for end play for very close tolerance of.002 to.008 (newspaper is.003 thick). After that is set up, the new rotors are bolted on to the spindles and checked to see if they are running true. If they run out more.008 the brakes will pump air into the system. Since working in the back we changed the shocks, and pulled the propeller shafts to replace all 4 universals. All parts were cleaned, painted and bolted back on the car to specs. The gas tank was removed next to be cleaned inside and out to be painted. We checked the gas pickup to see if the tank gas gauge worked and changed the filter on it. The tank hold-down straps had to be replaced because the old ones were broken and rusted badly. With the back done we will start on the front suspension to see what needs to be replaced, cleaned and painted. The rotors are shot along with dry rotted rubber bushing. Check out the pictures. At this time, I stop to write this article, and now we have about 60 hours into this part of the project. If you have any questions or want to see what we are doing, give me a call. Pete R 11

24 Carlisle Trip 2017 The Corvettes of Buffalo were well represented at the Corvettes of Carlisle event this year. The first group traveled on Wednesday August 23 rd with two 1967 Corvettes loaded on trailers. Gene and Bernie Colucci and Skip Polowy both trailered their 1967 Classics to show and celebrate the 50 th Anniversary of the 67 Vettes. Other COB members traveling on Wednesday were Dave and Kathy Huber, Jack and Nancy McHugh, Jim and Terry Decker, Frank and Marianne Pastore, and Etienne and Julia Kojsza. While most of the group stopped for lunch at the Country Cupboard in Lewisburg, a few members did a side trip before meeting up with the group in Carlisle. With help from Mel Skeide, we unloaded my 1967 at the NCCC Judged Snowfield, and secured our tents, chairs and stuff for the duration of the weekend. Having my GMC Canyon pickup worked out great to get to & from the hotel and allowed extra cargo space for any purchases of corvette parts, etc. On Thursday and Friday we were joined by Sue and Dick Brownlee, John Meyerhoff, Ken Kaczka, John Delore, Sam Iraci, Bruce Epolito, Mike Buccilli, Rocco Buccilli, Jim Kuczmarski, Leon Kuczmarski, Wayne Scudder, and Rodney Mitchell. Saturday was the NCCC Judged Car Show so I spent the morning cleaning my 67 and getting ready for the judging. Once parked in the NCCC area, those COB ers that did not want to compete, could park along the side where we set up the shade tents. The NCCC Driver s meeting was held at 12 noon, then rags down shortly after that. The York County Corvette Club, hosts the NCCC event and does a great job coordinating all the details. They explained the Carlisle NCCC Judged show is one of the toughest Concours events within NCCC with all the classes offered for the C1 s to the C7 s. At the driver s meeting, they also announced that 8 Celebrity Judges would be assisting the NCCC Judges for Special Awards so that we were prepared to answer questions, etc. I think all the COB ers that competed cleaned their cars like crazy. Rodney Mitchell said it felt like he put 30 hours of cleaning time into getting ready! Wayne Scudder said he had fun with the whole experience, while learning some things. Dick Brownlee said their C7 was the cleanest it ever had been since they owned it. And Jim Decker echoed the same comments while having fun. John Delore just kept cleaning and cleaning! The following pictures are the results from the judging and while there was some tie breaker inspections at the final moments, I think all that competed were winners by the smiles and comments I heard. Note: I was also honored to have my 67 selected by a Carlisle Celebrity Judge, and participated in a Grandstand Parade, receiving a special award presented by Lance Miller at the Grandstand.
