1 PITBOARD February 2013 South Bend Region s 59th Annual Banquet January 19, 2013 photo-w.loring Long-time SBR member, Lloyd Loring spoke to the audience about the history of SCCA road racing in the Central Division. Best SBR banquet ever? I may not be the best person to answer that, but I will go out on a limb and say it was one of the best we ve had in a decade. Rod Markowicz did an exemplary job of acquiring a new location for the banquet. The Blue Heron at Blackthorn was the perfect facility with plenty of room, good lighting and great staff. For those of you that attended the banquet, be sure to give Rod a pat on the back for all the behind-the-scenes work he did to make things run smoothly. Those delicious cream pies don t just show up on the dessert table. Rod does a lot of running around to make sure he gets great tasting pies at a good price. After a few words from Yours Truly, over 60 attendees enjoyed a tasty Polish buffet (what else would you expect?). Once everybody was satisfied with food and drink, our esteemed member Lloyd Loring spoke to us about some of the more peculiar aspects of SCCA road racing in the 50 s and 60 s. If you missed the banquet, be sure to ask Lloyd about the brake test they would run at tech at Road America. It s pretty funny. The evening continued as we recognized some of the leadership of SBR. These hard working folks allow us to put on quality events for the entire membership and our guests. As Lloyd stated earlier The fun is in the doing. Speaking of doing, Nick Mawhorr and Kim Bollinger recognized the Solo trophy winners for Kim picked out some pretty cool backpacks for class winners and the Tire Rack provided some cool awards to those lucky enough to finish high on the Tire Rack Index. 3 Join the SBR SCCA 2013 Winter Expedition As part of the region s continuing efforts to reward it s members, the South Bend Region SCCA is offering a winter day trip to Indianapolis on Saturday, February 23rd to enjoy indoor karting, or a trip to the Indy 500 Hall of Fame Museum, followed up by an exclusive private tour of the Target Team Ganassi facility not open to the public. Best of all, SBR is covering all charter bus expenses so you can spend your race money on racing karts and looking at race cars! This is a SBR Member s Only event. Each member may bring one guest, spouse, or significant other. The Karting Challenge will be a team enduro event and is limited to the first 24 registered entries. The alternate Indy 500 Museum tour has unlimited participants and the entire SBR group will be visiting the Target Ganassi facility together. Date: Saturday 2/23/13 Transportation: 1 long day round trip via charter bus from Mishawaka to Indy leaving early at 7:30 am returning around 9:30 pm. Destinations: Exclusive Group Indoor Enduro Team Karting at Fastimes Indoor Karting Facility. Alternate Non-kart Group Indy 500 Museum trip Target Ganassi Racing facility Tour Dinner at a casual dining location in Indy to be determined Schedule: 7:30 a.m Leave Mishawaka via charter bus to Indy 10:30 am 2:00 pm- Fastimes Karting with lunch served at venue. 11:00 am 1:30 pm -Alternate group trip to Indy 500 Museum & lunch 2:30 pm 4:00 pm - Private Tour at Ganassi Racing 5:00-6:00 pm Dinner in Indy at casual dining spot 6:30 pm Leave Indy via charter bus to Mishawaka 9:30 pm Arrive in Mishawka Costs: Karting Cost: $95.00 (Preregistration required) includes pizza lunch Indy 500 Museum: Adults $5; Children 6-15 years old $3; Children under 6 FREE. Bus Transportation: FREE Fastimes Karting Rules: All drivers must be at least five feet tall, 18 years of age, and be able to present a valid picture ID. All drivers must read and voluntarily sign a liability waiver form. All drivers must attend a Rules and Safety meeting prior to driving. Closed heel and toe shoes are required while driving. Guests with health problems such as seizures, heart problems, dizziness, difficulty breathing as well as pregnancy are not permitted to drive. Consumption of alcohol is prohibited prior to driving. Fastimes may refuse the privilege of driving to any group or individual without reason. Coin operated lockers are provided in the facility. Fastimes does not accept responsibility for lost or stolen items. SBR Karting Challenge Rules: 1 Hour Enduro/LeMans style feature race format. Minimum of 2 drivers per kart and a maximum of 3 drivers per kart. Karting Event is scheduled for 2 hours track time however actual race event time will be limited to 1 hour feature race with free track time to follow. A maximum of 8 karts are allowed on track at one time per Fastimes rules. Entrants must list current dressed driver weight when registering. Teams will be selected by SBR event steward based upon average driver weights per kart or other handicapped system TBD. Each team driver must drive a minimum of 15 minutes of competition time. 5 North American International Auto Show Quiz Since you can find better pictures of all the cars on display at the Detroit Auto Show on any website or blog, I ve decided to give you a quiz on headlights. Remember when auto manufacturers had two choices for headlights; round or rectangular? Well, as you can see below, headlights are an integral part of the styling on todays cars. 6 South Bend Region, SCCA Membership You Can t Afford NOT to Join For the last several years, one of our goals was to make South Bend Region(SBR), SCCA membership something of value. Here s a list of events that make your SBR membership special. SBR Winter Expedition to Indianapolis February 23, 2013 Instead of shoveling snow, you can join us on a trip to Indy via a chartered motor coach. Destinations include your choice of indoor karting or the Indianapolis 500 Museum. After lunch, the entire group will receive a guided tour of the Target Chip Ganassi Race shop. Cost: Bus trip is free for SBR members. Karting-$95. Museum-$5 SBR Track Nights at GingerMan Raceway April 14th and one more Fall date Come join us for an evening of track fun at GingerMan Raceway in South Haven, MI. Novice and experts alike will enjoy 1.5 hours of track time on a Sunday evening. Cost: $25 for SBR members only. Karting at Michiana Raceway Park October 1 st, 2013 Test your karting skills at the thrilling and fast MRP Raceway in South Bend. A team enduro event proved so popular in 2012, we plan on repeating the fun in Cost: $25 for SBR members only. Solo Events April through October These precision driving events are held on various Sundays from April through October. Everybody is welcome to compete, but members pay a lower entry fee. Cost: $25 for SBR members and $40 for nonmembers. Rally Events Spring and Fall These time-distance events are held on public roads(at legal speeds). Test your navigating skills as you travel some of the prettiest roads in Indiana and Michigan. In the past, SBR has covered the cost of automotive exhibits and dinner. Once again, everybody is welcome, but members pay a lower entry fee.
