2 The Story Behind the L.A. Sports Council In 1984, Los Angeles staged the most successful Olympics in history. That success, it was assumed, would certainly place Southern California among the most desirable destinations for staging elite sporting events in the future. Not so. In the months following the Games, the Southland was almost always overlooked as a potential site for hosting world-class events. The primary reason was that no single entity existed to bid for events on behalf of the community. Often, various facilities within the same area would find themselves bidding against each other, making it difficult for the region to present a sense of unity. In 1986, David Simon, then senior VP of the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce and a former L.A. Olympic Organizing Committee official, developed the concept of a volunteer sports and business committee for the purpose of bringing special events to the area. Prominent L.A. attorney John C. Argue, who had previously led the city s Olympic bid, chaired the group. Soon thereafter, the committee in conjunction with the City of Los Angeles bid successfully for the 1991 U.S. Olympic Festival. After that, people locally took notice. Coincidentally, that same year the NFL was receiving bids for the 1991 Super Bowl. Representatives from Anaheim Stadium, the Rose Bowl and the L.A. Memorial Coliseum all made separate appeals to the League to stage the game at their respective venues. The Super Bowl was instead awarded to Tampa. The Sports Council and the Olympics Few cities in the world can match Los Angeles' rich Olympic heritage. After all, L.A. is one of only a handful of cities that have hosted two Olympic Games. The Sports Council has also enjoyed a long association with the Olympic movement, and in fact is the only private organization in the United States (other than the U.S. Olympic Committee) to have three International Olympic Committee representatives on its board of directors Jim Easton (an IOC vice president), Anita DeFrantz and Bob Ctvrtlik. The Sports Council also has worked in support of efforts to return the Olympic Games to L.A. Los Angeles (1932 and 1984) is one of just four cities in the world to be awarded the Games twice (Paris, London and Athens are the others), and has submitted more Olympic bids (12) than any city in the world. For the most recent bid the Council, under a contract with the private, nonprofit Los Angeles 2012 Bid Committee, developed the voluminous bid documents and submitted them to the USOC on behalf of the city. The Council has been the region's prime mover behind bids for world and national championships in such Olympic sports as badminton, beach volleyball, cycling, figure skating, gymnastics, soccer, swimming, taekwondo and track and field. The division among the three stadiums undermined any chance of landing the game. The need for a unified organization was never more evident. So in 1988, the Sports Council was incorporated as an independent, privately financed organization that would be able to work with teams and facilities throughout the Los Angeles/ Orange County area. Simon was named president; Argue was elected chairman. "Greater Los Angeles is blessed with a pro-active sports council to secure the best in competitive athletics for our community. Nobody does it better." Tommy Hawkins Vice President, Communications Los Angeles Dodgers In one of its first initiatives, the new organization made a successful bid for the 1993 Super Bowl. That bid offered the NFL its choice of the three area venues. Although the Rose Bowl was selected, the bid still received the support of both the L.A. Coliseum and Anaheim Stadium. The local show of unity impressed the NFL. Since then, the Sports Council, while remaining privately funded, has brought a long list of world-class sporting events to the region, as documented throughout this report. Its continuous efforts have helped keep Southern California a world sports capital, and the Los Angeles Sports Council the nation s most successful organization of its kind. The Sports Council is headquartered inside the landmark Chamber of Commerce building in downtown Los Angeles. In partnership with the City of Long Beach, the organization has bid successfully for the 2004 U.S. Olympic trials in both swimming and water polo. The Sports Council also was instrumental in bringing the 1992 U.S. Olympic trials in synchronized swimming to the AAF Rose Bowl Aquatics Center in Pasadena, California. The Council and the U.S. Olympic Committee co-hosted fundraising galas in 1996, 1998 and 2000 as a send-off or "welcome home" in honor of Southern California's Olympic athletes. The Road to Athens begins in Anaheim at the 2003 World Gymnastics Championships. Since the trials in '92, synchronized swimming has grown in popularity, especially in Southern California. 10 Julie Swail, captain of the U.S. Olympic water polo team, shows her silver medal to four-time diving gold medalist Greg Louganis at the 2000 gala. 11
3 Celebrating Our Sports History The rich history and exciting character of Los Angeles sports has become a hallmark of this great city. Sports have become a major component in drawing this far-flung community together behind a common cause: excitement, exhilaration and outright joy. During one "unforgettable" November night in 1995, the Sports Council captured those thrills when it staged an extraordinary event celebrating the 100 greatest moments in our glorious sports history. The gala was held on the arena floor of UCLA's Pauley Pavilion, and legendary broadcaster Vin Scully was the distinguished Master of Ceremonies. Over 1,000 people attended, including many of the most influential figures in the Southern California sports community plus dozens of our famous sports heroes. The honorees included John Wooden, Rafer Johnson, Wayne Gretzky, Kirk Gibson, Magic Johnson, Jack Kramer, Bill Shoemaker, Gary Beban, James Worthy, Anthony Davis, Edwin Moses, Ann Meyers Drysdale, Peter Ueberroth, John McKay and Janet Evans, among others. Board of Directors The Sports Council s 66-member board of directors is a cross-section of the leadership of Southern California s sports and business communities, ranging from CEOs of Fortune 500 companies to senior executives of sports franchises. The area s professional teams, sports facilities and major universities all are represented on the board. The Council s corporate membership is approximately 150 strong and includes many of the region s major business, sports and community leaders. CHAIRMAN CORPORATE OFFICERS VICE-CHAIR VICE-CHAIR PRESIDENT The evening's program was televised live in primetime on Prime Sports (now Fox Sports Net). One by one the top twelve moments were counted down until Gibson's dramatic home run for the Dodgers in Game 1 of the 1988 World Series was revealed as the No. 1 moment. To coincide with the gala, the Sports Council produced a full-color, coffee table-style book titled "Unforgettable: The 100 Greatest Moments in Los Angeles Sports History." Researched and written by Sports Council board member Richard Perelman, the 224-page book chronicles the top moments, and ranks them in their relative order of importance, interest or plain old excitement value. 5 Anaheim Angels In Memoriam Anaheim Mighty Ducks The Los Angeles Sports Council lost its founding chairman and best friend when John C. Argue passed away in August of Long Beach Ice Dogs John's leadership skills benefited many civic organizations in Southern California during his lifetime, but he had a particular impact on the world of sports. As president of the Southern California Committee for the Olympic Games, he led the successful bid to stage the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. By sticking to the private sector approach that he championed, the resulting Games produced an operating surplus of more than $230 million. Subsequently, John rallied the business community behind the founding of the Los Angeles Sports Council as a private, nonprofit corporation dedicated to bringing major sporting events to Southern California. John's legacy will live on for years to come through the many events that the Sports Council has brought and will continue to bring to the Los Angeles area. Los Angeles Galaxy A graduate of Occidental College and the USC School of Law, at the time of his death John also was chairman of the Amateur Athletic Foundation of Los Angeles, the USC Board of Trustees and The Rose Hills Foundation.
