Due to issues beyond our control, neither event was able to happen. 8. Increase the use of the Tyson Events Center for community and school events The IHSAA (Iowa High School Athletic Association) Boys Basketball Sub-State Tournament was held at the Tyson Events Center for the first time since Contract with a consultant to provide feedback on upgrades and additions needed for the Center to remain a competitive regional arena. Venue Solutions Group returned a report with short-term and long-term suggested upgrades for the Tyson Events Center. The Sioux City Events Facilities Department brings direct spending from visitors, diversity in live entertainment and sporting events, and community pride to the City of Sioux City. We measure success one event at a time. The keys to our success are to continue to maintain current outstanding guest experiences, and improve that experience as a driving factor for increased attendance; increase our market size through group sales and marketing activities to help increase attendance and sales at each event; and balance these items with fiscal responsibility.
Sioux City Convention Center Centerplate marketed the Convention Center as a regional leader for conventions and other multi-use events. A few of the highlights from this year included hosting two conventions: The Grand Lodge of Iowa Mason Conference, and the Iowa Association of Business & Industry, new events included Noah s Hope Animal Rescue Fundraiser. White Tails, DPNC/Nature Calls, You Go Girl!, Her Health, Siouxland Youth for Christ, Steins & Vines, and Hy-Vee Health Fair have become annual events. Fairs and Trade Shows such as Siouxland Samplers Quilt Show, Diabetic Health Fair, Kool Outdoor Show, and the iheart Media Bridal Show were hosted. Sporting Events included the Midwest Dart Tournament, Regional and District Martial Arts Tournaments, and White Tiger Martial Arts Competition. We also hosted Discover the Dinosaurs, National American Miss Pageant, CEF of Siouxland - Childrens Goodnews Spectacular, Hairball, and several political gatherings, and Social Events such as weddings, quiceañeras, school dance party events, class reunions and concerts. The renovation of the galleries was completed updating the moveable walls, ceiling, lights, sound system, carpet, and repainting the walls. The Sioux City Events Facilities Department brings direct spending from visitors, diversity in live entertainment and sporting events, and community pride to the City of Sioux City. We measure The Convention Center's operational goal for event organizers is to make their event easy to success one event at a time. The keys to our success are to continue to maintain current plan in a creative atmosphere. We strive to attain zero negative feedback while providing state-of-the-art outstanding guest technical experiences, services and in a improve clean and that safe experience environment. as a driving We will factor continue for increased to focus on attendance; increase our market size through group sales and marketing activities to help partnerships with local hotels in an effort to generate additional funds for the hotel/motel tax, which increase will attendance benefit the and City sales of Sioux at each City overall. event; and balance these items with fiscal responsibility.
Tyson Events Center/Gateway Arena We will continue to market the Tyson Events Center as a premier entertainment destination. The Tyson Events Center/Gateway Arena saw gross ticket sales at approximately $1.8M with 75 ticketed events consisting of 7 concerts (Huey Lewis and the News headliner for RAGBRAI entertainment, Bryan Adams, Darius Rucker, CMT Tour: Suits & Boots Tour: Brett Eldredge & Thomas Rhett, Echosmith w/andy Grammar, Alan Jackson, and Dierks Bentley); and 10 family and other production events. We hosted the NAIA Women s DII National Basketball Championship, and the NAIA National Volleyball Championship. Events during the year included CNOS Basketball Classic, Monster Trucks, Rawhide Bull Riding Challenge, Iowa High School Basketball Sub-State Tournament, Abu Bekr Shrine Circus, Face Off for Charity, Hy-Vee Customer Appreciation Carnival, and the Mardi Gras Festivale. The Farmers Market has been a large draw for people from May through October, and takes place in the Tyson Events Center s suite lot on Wednesday and Saturday mornings. The Sioux City Musketeers hockey team held 30 regular season home games (no playoff games) and Sioux City Bandits indoor football team held 6 total home games (no playoff games). We also hosted 5 local high school and college graduations. The Tyson Events Center also hosted the Pack the Shack/Feed the Funnel outreach event. The facility has sold approximately $40.0 million worth of tickets since opening in We continue to solidify and develop new relationships to continue our share of event opportunities as these events have a big impact on the community and the generation of sales tax revenue and hotelmotel tax.
Orpheum Theatre We will continue to market the elegant Orpheum Theatre as a premier cultural destination. The Orpheum Theatre held 78 events (with 42 of those being ticketed) and had gross ticket sales of approximately $1.8M. Events during the year included Shinedown; Nate Ruess; Rob Thomas; Avett Brothers; Jackson Browne; comedian Brian Regan; Tonic Sol Fa; illusionist Jay Owenhouse; R5; Peppa Pig Live; Home Free; and Wild Kratts Live. The Broadway Series presented: Disney s Beauty and the Beast, Piano Guys, Million Dollar Quartet, Ragtime The Musical, Disney in Concert, and 8 performances of the national touring production of Jersey Boys. The local musical Orpheum organizations held three final performances of Rockestra and eight Sioux City Symphony Orchestra performances, for a total of eleven live concerts including a variety of classical styles and upbeat rock-and-roll performances. This election season, the Orpheum hosted four political events (Hillary for America, Bernie Sanders 2016, Ben Carson, Donald Trump for President, Inc.). The NAIA Softball Banquet, a performance by the Sioux City Conservatory of Music, a number of private events, wedding receptions, and fundraisers were held at this facility. Theatre staff continued to give tours of the facility. The EFD continues to manage the theatre on behalf of the Orpheum Theatre Preservation Project Ltd. The City is not at financial risk to have a deficit with its involvement with the Orpheum because the Orpheum Board pays related EFD expenses as presented for payment. The Orpheum Theatre is now in its 15th year after the renovation and continues its role as a destination point, providing a great impact to the community.
Sioux City Tourism Bureau We will continue to increase awareness of entertainment opportunities and implement new programming and campaigns to get visitors to Sioux City. The Bureau hosted the NAIA Women s Division II National Basketball Tournament and the NAIA Volleyball Tournament at the Tyson Events Center, which drew fans of approximately 35,000 and 18,000 respectively. We hosted the NAIA Softball World Series at Morningside College and were the start/host city for RAGBRAI this year. The Tourism Bureau is the marketing and sales department for Sioux City as a destination, as well as for event marketing. Festivals and outdoor events, sporting events, conventions, and conferences are all examples of the type of events the staff helps to support and bring to Sioux City. The Bureau actively participates in the Siouxland Hospitality Association meetings to report on activities and events designed to increase hotel stays and generate additional hotel/motel tax revenue. This year the Bureau brought in nationally recognized tourism expert Roger Brooks to assess and make recommendations to improve the city from a new visitor s perspective. The Bureau continued to provide updated information on Sioux City attractions and amenities in the form of brochures, magazines, web sites, and staff knowledge to promote the area. The Visitors Guide is released 3 times per year, rather than annually, to be more current and attractive to users. During the months of June & July, the Bureau managed the Tourist in Your Own Town program. It touted increased participation, along with almost 100 prizes. The Big Parade continues with new concepts being implemented and the Mardi Gras Festivale was once again hosted by the Tyson Events Center. We also maintain a focus on sporting events and our continued successful partnership with the NAIA is the baseline from which partnerships with other sporting organizations can develop. The NAIA has extended our basketball tournament contract through 2017, as well as the NAIA volleyball tournament contract through 2017.
