MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD CHAIR I m proud to report that this past year has been another successful one for WinSport. Our mission is to provide opportunities for Canadians to discover, develop and excel at sport through world-class training, facilities and exceptional experiences. This mission is something the Board takes a great deal of pride in, and we challenge ourselves at every meeting to ensure we are doing everything we can to reinforce it. I m pleased to say that over the past year, we have done an exceptional job of executing our mission. The success of the past year is something that couldn t have been accomplished without the Board s hard work and dedication. I would like to thank everyone for their efforts. I d also like to especially thank Kevin Benson for his years of service, as he is retiring from his duties on our Board. I d also like to thank the management team and commend President and CEO Barry Heck for his tremendous leadership. Phil Graham joined the team this past year as Vice-President of Finance and on behalf of the Board, we are thrilled to have Phil in our community. Phil is a chartered accountant with a master s degree in Business Administration. He is also a twotime summer Olympian (1996 & 2000) and six-time Canadian national rowing champion. Phil s combined passion in sport, finance and business is a tremendous asset to WinSport s management team. Although there were many key successes this past year, I would like to touch on a few that I feel deserve honourable mention. WinSport opened the biggest, fastest and best tube park in Western Canada this past year, which also includes a food truck, decks, music and washrooms. WinSport hosted more than 1,000 events of all sizes this past year, including Nor-Ams, World Cups, National Championships, the Pinty s Grand Slam of Curling and many other noteworthy gatherings. We have also been awarded the 2021 Luge World Championships, which is a huge accomplishment. WinSport continues to invest and contribute to most of Canada s winter national and provincial sports organizations, including Hockey Canada, Luge Canada, Bobsleigh Canada Skeleton, Freestyle Canada, Cross Country Canada, Biathlon Canada, Ski Jumping Canada, Snowboard Canada, Skate Canada, Speed Skating Canada and Alpine Canada. In addition, WinSport works closely with the Canadian Sports Institute Calgary, Sport Canada and Own the Podium to ensure that we are adding value to our developing and elite athletes. 6

Calgary Economic Development had a study prepared to determine WinSport s economic impact on the city and province, and we are happy to report that after 30 years of operating legacy assets and helping Albertans discover, develop, and excel in sport, our organization also contributes $120 million of positive economic impact annually to the City of Calgary. We are continually challenging our team to grow, learn, adapt, innovate, execute and refine the products we deliver to our stakeholders, and we continue to believe that our journey is both meaningful and intrinsic to the well-being of our community. The success of last year is attributable to the commitment from every department, but one that I would like to highlight is the food and beverage and events team, which experienced substantial growth over the past year. The team hosted 1,134 events and served meals to 164,979 guests. I d like to acknowledge Director of Food & Beverage and Sales, Jason McKay, along with Executive Chef Liana Robberecht for successfully expanding the food and beverage operation while providing guests with world-class cuisine, excellent service, and at the same time contributing to the financial success of the organization. I d like to reflect on the exciting possibility that Calgary could host another Winter Olympic Games in The city is currently exploring the idea of putting forth a bid. If it were not for the Olympic Games in 1988, WinSport would not exist today. The Games have given us the opportunity to grow as a part of the Calgary community for three decades. As a community, we continue to experience the direct benefits from hosting these Games. Not only have the 88 Games and WinSport enriched our community by promoting healthy lifestyle choices, indoor and outdoor recreation, and elite sports participation and competition, we have also had a meaningful impact financially on the city, through our aforementioned economic impact. I am certain that bringing the Olympics to the city again would allow WinSport and the rest of Calgary to continue to thrive. On behalf of the Board, I encourage members of the Calgary community to reach out to your municipal leaders to express your desire to bring the Olympics back to the city in Finally, I would like to thank those directors and officers that have gone before us at CODA (Calgary Olympic Development Association) and WinSport for their leadership and foresight, and the opportunity for this Board and management to steward WinSport into Scott Hutcheson Board Chair 7

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT & CEO WinSport s fiscal year saw many successes as we continued to focus on delivering our purpose: To inspire and activate human potential through the spirit of sport. There is a lot to celebrate from the last fiscal year and through to the end of 2017, and I would like to share a few of the highlights, which include the following: Once again, our dedicated and passionate team have consistently delivered exceptional experiences to our guests. We successfully launched the Acura Tube Park, which is Western Canada s largest and fastest tube park. Significant progress was made this summer in terms of construction within Canada Olympic Park, due to the Trinity Hills project east of the park. A service agreement with the Trinity Development Group included the addition of an eight-storey tower, which serves as the new landing pad for the Monster zipline. This project also included a new summer ski jump ramp, along with water, sewer and electrical upgrades for the Acura Tube Park, which enables us to use the area for a summer concert venue. In addition, significant work was completed to direct drainage from the ski jump bowl into our storm pond. We are progressing with $21 million in upgrades to the sliding track after securing $10 million from the provincial government and we are making progress on securing the remaining funds required to complete the project. We launched the WinSport Newcomers program, which uses sport as a way to successfully integrate newcomers into Canadian society by introducing them to winter sport and providing them the opportunity to meet fellow Calgarians. Through providing world-class facilities, WinSport contributed $4 million of value to Canada s highperformance sport organizations and athletes. In addition, WinSport s Olympic Legacy Funds contributed $3.5 million to the Olympic Oval at the University of Calgary. We had a relatively strong summer and winter season despite the challenges presented by a fragile economy and the effects of inconsistent weather, which resulted in the hill opening three weeks later than it typically does. 8

Although WinSport experienced many successes last year, we still face significant challenges that we must continue to tackle head-on in the years ahead. WinSport operates at a loss, and although the earnings from our endowment funds help offset our operating losses, significant capital is required to renew our end-of-life legacy assets and maintain our new ones to world-class standards. The endowment funds were not structured to address these capital needs and therefore a significant recapitalization is required if we are to continue to successfully deliver our purpose. Recognizing these challenges, we remain committed to achieving our mission by being judicious in every decision we make, so that we continue to punch above our weight and offer value to our guests. At the same time, we have a full understanding that we cannot be everything to everyone. We view this challenge as an opportunity to be Better than Yesterday and we will continue to focus on this, so that we can continue to help people of all ages discover, develop and excel in sport. This year is particularly special as we are celebrating the 30th anniversary of the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympic Games. If it were not for these Games, WinSport would not be here today. The Games have given us the opportunity to grow and evolve to become a fixture of the Calgary community for more than three decades and we continue to experience the direct benefits from hosting the 88 Games. A recent study conducted by the City of Calgary found that WinSport contributes $120 million annually (2016) to the Calgary economy. In addition, since the $70-million endowment fund was created following the 1988 Winter Olympic Games, $225 million has been invested back into high-performance sport, the Olympic Oval s general operations and capital renewal requirements and WinSport s operations at Canada Olympic Park. We are excited that the City of Calgary is exploring a potential bid for the 2026 Winter Olympics. WinSport fully supports bringing the Games back to Calgary and has been participating in the bid exploration process. We strongly believe that the 2026 Winter Olympic Games can be exercised in an economically responsible manner, resulting in tremendous benefits to Calgarians for years following the Games, just like we did in In closing, I want to thank our tremendous volunteer Board of Directors and the entire WinSport team for their hard work, dedication and passion which resulted in another year we can all be proud of. Barry M. Heck President and CEO 9

WinSport teaches people of all ages to skate and play hockey or ringette. As a mom, WinSport s camps and programs, are affordable, amazingly run by the young staff members, and my kid comes home tired and excited to go back the next day. The staff members have all been amazing, and the mountain bike camp dudes are truly some of the best young people that have had an impact on my kid. A few ski lesson supervisors remembered my little Chevelle later that same year after the snow had melted and we retuned for summer activities. WinSport staff does an amazing job of watching the kids, and moving them up or down based on their skill level for all sorts of programs. Every mom I ve ever talked to about the COP experience rave about how great it is. - Calgary mom Jen Whitehead, December
