3 OVERVIEW The Murray Bridge Agricultural & Horticultural Society Inc hold their show on the fourth Saturday and Sunday of September every year marked the shows 95 th annual show. A popular event of the Annual Show is the Sheep Shearing Competition. The event draws a large crowd from a variety of backgrounds. The current organisers of the Shearing Competition are Richard Hein and Darryl Green, who have been organising the shearing for the past 10 years. Without judges, sponsors and farmers supporting this event for many years, the event could not run successfully. The Competition consists of four events, Learners, Intermediate, Senior and Open Sport Shear, with a best local and best shorn sheep in each event. This year saw a part of the Australian Wool Innovation Limited (AWI) sponsorship, the entry fee for each competitor in the Learners event paid for. The current Convenor of the Murray Bridge Shearing Competition, Mr Richard Hein, has been a shearer in the region since the early seventies and has been heavily involved in this section since the early eighties. He has forged a fantastic relationship with sheep producers in the region and sponsors from across the state. We are in the process of transitioning to a younger committee and we welcomed on board our committee this year, younger shearers Lincoln Willis and Jordan Richards along with their fathers Andrew Willis and Glen Richards. These families bring with them a long association with sheep, shearing and the regions agricultural production and we look forward to pursuing their ideas in the section into the future. We are in the process of developing a interschool challenge for the region but due to other pressing commitments this did not get off the ground this year. We look forward to working with teachers from the Murray Bridge High School, Mannum Highschool, Unity College, Mount Barker High School, Coomandook Area School, Karoonda and East Murray Schools and schools from further afield. The region has a wealth of experience and talent and the event is lucky enough to get internationally acclaimed shearer Shannon Warnerst to our competition. This provides us with excellent opportunities to develop a mentoring program for young up and coming shearers of the future. Our local judges, sponsors, contractors and farmers are only too keen to help in any way they can Murray Bridge Show Sports Shear & Speed Shear Page 3 of 27

5 CONDUCT OF COMPETITION The 2013 Murray Bridge Shearing Competition is conducted under the rules and regulations of Sports Shear Australia Inc. The event uses a rotational judging system involving eight judges while running a permanent 4 stand raised board shed. The judges are all endorsed and approved by Sports Shear SA. The times for each shearer are recorded on a display board that is displayed to the general public and scores are listed on the board as soon as they are compiled. Competitors are encouraged to ask questions and judges, officials and other shearers are available to offer advice on technique as required, however are restricted to two events in the Sports Shear events, due to the number of competitors and sheep to be shorn. The competition commences at 9:00am with the AWI Learners Sports Shear Competition. Competitors are invited to nominate for events right up to 30 minutes prior to the commencement of each event. This enables all interested parties the best opportunity to be involved. The Intermediate Sports Shear Competition follows the Learners division and then the Senior Sports Shear finishing with the Open Sports Shear event. At the conclusion of this competition, shearers are invited to participate in the Speed Shear events in the evening. An event which appeals to many shearers and observers from the general public. Competitors in the AWI Learners Sports Shear Competition were asked to shear one sheep and they could choose their sheep from a pen of four animals. The sheep used in the event were plain bodied, 2 ½ & 3 ½ year old Poll Merino ewes with 60-75mm of 20-21µ wool, condition score , that had been crutched and a pre-udder sweep, ensuring the safety and well being of the shearer and animal. Entry into the AWI Learners Sports Shear Competition was free and prizes were given for first place, second place, third place, fourth place, best shorn sheep and best local Murray Bridge Show Sports Shear & Speed Shear Page 5 of 27
6 COMPETITORS Entries were a little down on previous years. This has been attributed to delays in distributing the promotional brochure about the event. However this year saw competitors coming from: Murray Bridge (5), Mannum (1), Bow Hill (1), Palmer (1), Nildottie (1), Coomandook (1), Karoonda (1), Naturi (a), Freeling (1), Willalooka (1), Keith (1), Kingston (1), Victor Harbour (1), Port Germein (1), New Zealand (1) and Riverton, Wyoming USA (1). We also enjoyed the excitement of having one female shearer in the competition which was well received by the general public and fellow competitors.
