2 2017 Connecticut State Shoot HONOREE Richard J. Latouf Rich Latouf was born in July 1959 in Pretoria South Africa. From an early age, he enjoyed hunting and fishing in the open fields of home. His Mother, a talented pistol shooter in her own right, fostered interest, respect and appreciation for marksmanship. Growing up, he was always tinkering with anything mechanical, often helping his Dad fix machines in their soda factory. If something was broken, he was keen to pull it apart and fix it. He would later do an apprenticeship as a tool and die maker. The world-famous Kyalami Race Track was not far from his house and was a natural attraction for any of the local boys. There he developed a passion for motorcycles. He obtained his first motorcycle at age 14 and began racing. This would later bring him state side with Yamaha and he was in awe of the United States. He knew then that this was where he wanted to be. Determined, he returned a few years later settling in Connecticut where he worked for family maintaining landscape equipment and trucks. In his spare time, tinkering again, he started making bird houses and rabbit hutches for friends and then furniture. Always the selftaught kind of guy, he opened RJL WoodWork and went into business for himself. That s the American way. In his spare time, he enjoyed hunting deer, upland birds and fishing in Connecticut and while attending a gun show back in 1997 he met Pete Savino who was manning a booth for North Atlantic Sportsman. In conversation, the subject of trapshooting came about. Rich hadn t shot trap since he was in the military back in South Africa so he went to North Atlantic and met the owner, Joe Cimino as well as Dick Baldwin. By afternoons end he had purchased a shotgun. Baldwin and Cimino were early mentors and sponsored him in joining Pahquioque Gun Club. He was hooked. That summer his first registered shoot was the Connecticut State shoot where he has been the shoot off director for a number of years. An awarded competitive shooter throughout the Eastern Zone and Grand American, he doesn t say much about that. What he does revel in is the comradery and friendships that he has made throughout his participation in the sport. He served as a Director at Pahquioque for several years and upon becoming a member of Fairfield County he soon became the Club Delegate to the CTA. He then served as the Secretary for the CTA and in 2009 was elected as the Connecticut ATA Delegate. In life and around the trap line it is said that he never met a stranger. 2
