Ten Pioneers found their way onto the scoreboard, including 15 points from Callan Taylor (Overland Park, KS), as the SHU women s basketball team downed the Knights Friday night. The Pioneers forced 23 FDU turnovers and held the Knights to just 24 percent shooting for the night to snap Fairleigh Dickinson s six game winning streak. The victory was number 350 in the collegiate coaching career of Pioneer head coach Ed Swanson. I m more happy that we are off to a 3-0 start in conference play and are in a good rhythm overall, said Swanson after the win. We are hitting our stride as a team and that s more important to me than a milestone. Sacred Heart (9-5, 3-0 NEC) got on the board first as Maggie Cosgrove (Andover, MA) buried a trey with the shot clock expiring 1:14 into the game. The Pioneers would open up a 7-0 lead on a Mauren Reilly (Cherry Hill, NJ) layup followed by a Taylor jumper. The Knights got their first bucket at the 15:40 mark as Mariyah Laury hit a straight away three. Alexis Campbell (Asburn, VA) got an easy basket in transition on a pass from Ericka Norman (Chino Hills, CA) as SHU held a 9-6 advantage eight minutes into the first half. Morgan Meriman (Seattle, WA) drew a foul and got the basket to put SHU up 14-6 one possession after Cosgrove hit her second three-pointer. Merriman provided the Pioneers with their next four points as Sacred Heart took a double digit lead at Taylor hit a straight-away three and Reilly worked an easy lay-in to cap a 17-0 run and give the Pioneers a 26-6 cushion. Fairleigh Dickinson (9-5, 2-1 NEC) got its first field goal in over ten minutes as Desiree Crawford knocked down a jumper with 4:05 remaining in the half. Amy Longo made it five straight for FDU on a trey that put the game at Taylor had four of the Pioneers final five points of the half as SHU took a advantage into the intermission. The Pioneers held the Knights to just 19 percent shooting (5-26) in the first half. Sacred Heart shot 40 percent (12-30) in the first twenty minutes while Taylor led all scorers with 11 points at the half. SHU forced Fairleigh Dickinson into 12 turnovers and held a rebounding advantage at halftime. We have become a balanced team and I really thought our defense played great tonight, commented Swanson. Everyone came into the game and contributed with what they are good at. Reilly got the first points of the second half as she put in a layup off of a nice feed from Kiley Evans (Cazenovia, NY). Evans finished with a career high six assists for the night. Reilly would return the favor three minutes later as she supplied Taylor with an assist to make the score Jasmyra Saunders responded for the Knights with a trey from the right wing on the next possession. The SHU defense continued to disrupt the Fairleigh Dickinson offense as the Knights put in just two field goals in the first eight minutes of the half. Norman stripped the Knight point guard and went coastto-coast for an easy layup to make it The Pioneers extended the lead to on back-to-back jumpers from Cosgrove and Campbell. Campbell gave Sacred Heart a 30 point lead with 6:15 remaining in regulation as the junior guard finished a conventional three-point play, drawing a foul on a fast break layup. Enjoli Bland (Queen Creek, AZ) and Elise Lorenz (Santa Margarita, CA) both came off the bench for baskets late as the Pioneers cruised down the stretch for a victory. The Pioneers have now won 15 straight meetings with the Knights and improve to 19-1 all-time against Fairleigh Dickinson. Sacred Heart finished the game shooting 42 percent from the floor and 31 percent from the beyond the arc.

4 Balanced Scoring... Ten Pioneers scored as SHU posted a 26 point victory over Fairleigh Dickinson. Senior Maureen Reilly tied a career high with eight points in the win over the Knights. The win featured six players notching at least seven points as SHU shot over 40 percent from the field, a mark they are 9-0 when reaching this season. Taylor Doubles Up... Junior Callan Taylor has recorded two consecutive double-doubles and has four total in Taylor leads the Pioneers with 15.1 points and 7.1 rebounds per game. She ranks third in the NEC in scoring and is averaging 15.7 points and 9.7 rebounds against league opponents. Five of a Kind... Five Pioneers scored 11 points as SHU put on its most balanced scoring display of the year in a win over Wagner. Callan Taylor recorded a double-double with ten rebounds along with her 11 points. The mark was a career best for freshmen Ericka Norman and Blair Konsizewski. Senior Maggie Cosgrove and sophomore Kiley Evans rounded out the quintet of Pioneers with 11 points. Apo Lost For the Year... Former NEC player of the year Alisa Apo will miss the remainder of the season after suffering an ACL tear against Harvard. The Freehold, NJ native will go down as one of the best players in program history. Apo recorded the third most points in SHU history (1,550), has the second highest assist total (386), and led the Pioneers to a perfect conference season as well as a berth in the NCAA tournament. Cosgrove Finds Her Range... Senior Maggie Cosgrove has knocked down 13 treys in the Pioneers last four games. Cosgrove finished the campaign among the nation s leaders in three-point field goal percentage. The Andover, MA native is Sacred Heart s all-time leader in three-point field goals with 220. Cosgrove still has more than half of her senior season to play as she continues to put distance between second place, Ashley Kohl (173). No Late Comebacks... Sacred Heart is a perfect 7-0 when having the advantage entering halftime. SHU is even better, 9-0, after being on top with ten minutes remaining in regulation. However, the Pioneers are 0-5 this season when they trail with ten minutes left. The last Sacred Heart comeback victory occurred in January of 2010 against Central Connecticut State. In that game the Blue Devils led by one at the half and by six with 11:06 to play. Forcing Turnovers... Sacred Heart has showcased a swarming defense this season, forcing at least 20 turnovers seven times this season. The Pioneers forced a season best 28 turnovers against Wagner and followed that performance by forcing 23 Fairleigh Dickinson miscues the next time out. Freshman Ericka Norman has improved each game this year and leads Sacred Heart with 23 steals in Historic Defensive Effort... Sacred Heart tied a division I record by holding Siena to a single field goal in the first half of a victory. The Saints managed just seven total points and went one-for-20 (5%) from the field in the opening twenty minutes. For the game Siena managed to shoot just under 20 percent (10-51). The game marked the first time in SHU s division I history the Pioneers held an opponent to under 20 percent from the floor. The previous low came December 2, 2000 in a win over Lehigh as the Mountain Hawks shot 20.4% (11-52). Swanson Picks Up Career Win Sacred Heart head coach Ed Swanson earned career win number 350 against Fairleigh Dickinson as the Pioneers routed the Knights in early January. Swanson has spent his entire 21 year coaching career at his alma mater and is by far the winningest coach in program history. During his 11 years in the league Swanson has become the all-time leader in Northeast Conference victories with 153. Pioneers Ink Three NLI s For Hannah Kimmel (Harpursville, NY), Gabrielle Washington (Mesa, AZ) and Katie Shepard (Lone Tree, CO) have signed national letter of intents and will be Sacred Heart Pioneers in the fall of Kimmel has averaged over 29 points per game in her high school career and is a two time conference MVP. Last season she eclipsed the 1,000 point plateau en route to being named the East Valley Region player of the year. Shepard, a true point guard, averaged eight points and eight assists in her junior season at Chapparal high school. She is a two-time team captain and was a 2010 all-league selection. Sacred Heart Tabbed Third In NEC Preseason Poll... The Pioneers enter the Northeast Conference portion of their schedule after being picked to finish third in the NEC preseason coaches poll. Long Island is the preseason favorite to capture the conference title, the Blackbirds received six first-place votes. Robert Morris, the defending regular season champion, came in just ahead of SHU in second and earned three first-place nods. 10 Head Coach Ed Swanson - 21st Year, Ed Swanson took the reins of the Sacred Heart University women s basketball program in 1990 and has built the Pioneers into one of the top teams in the Northeast Conference and throughout the Northeast. Swanson s career has seen the veteran coach eclipse the 300 career victories mark en route to a pair of NEC Championships as well as earning him the honor of being inducted into the New England Basketball Hall of Fame in Beginning his 21 st season on the Sacred Heart bench, Swanson has built the Pioneers into one of the top-teams year in and year out in the NEC. In the season he led SHU to a perfect run through the league and the program s second conference title in four years. The run for the Pioneers marked just the third perfect 18-0 mark in NEC history and earned Swanson his third NEC Coach of the Year award. Over the past 15 seasons, the Pioneers have posted at least a.500 record or better under Swanson, a streak that has included five 20 win seasons. The magical run in included a pair of coaching milestones as Swanson moved past former Mount St. Mary s head coach Bill Sheahan (124) in all-time Northeast Conference wins at 153 and counting while also eclipsing the 300 win plateau in career victories. In their 11 years in the Northeast Conference, Swanson s Pioneers have never missed the playoffs and have never finished lower then third in the final league standings. He has guided Sacred Heart to a record since joining the Division I ranks in After a 0-5 start to the season, Swanson s Pioneers got their season on track and finished the year with 25-8 record including 21-straight wins, a school record and mark that ranked second in the country. After a perfect run through the NEC schedule, the Pioneers finished off their amazing season by capturing their second league title and trip to the NCAA Tournament in the last four years. The season was another fantastic run for Swanson and his program as the Pioneers made their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance after capturing the NEC Championship in just their seventh season at the Division I level. Swanson led the Pioneers to a school record 26-5 record along with a then record mark of 16 NEC wins while he himself earned his 250th career victory. He has guided the Pioneers to five 20 win seasons including four in the last six years. Swanson s Pioneers enter this season riding a streak of nine-straight winning seasons and eight-straight seasons with at least 18. Under his leadership, the Pioneers have become one of the toughest teams on their home court, the William H. Pitt Center. Since the opening of the Pitt Center in 1997, his Sacred Heart teams have won 82% (152-34) of their home games including a perfect 15-0 in and 14-0 in Between 2002 and 2004, the Pioneers put together a string of 19-straight regular season wins at home in the Pitt Center. Their.821 winning percentage at home ranks the Pitt Center nationally as one the toughest arenas for visiting teams to earn a win. Since joining the Northeast Conference in , the Pioneers have had a pair of Northeast Conference Player of the Year and three NEC Rookie of the Year award winners.in Alisa Apo became just the second player in conference history to win the league s top-player award after earning the rookie of the year award the previous season. SHU center Kaitlin Sowinski joined former Pioneer Amanda Pape with back-to-back All- NEC first team awards. Apo became a member of that club with her performance in claiming her another All-NEC first team selection. Pape, the program s all-time leading scorer, was named both the NEC s Player and Rookie of the Year while leading the Pioneers to their first-ever league title. Apo, Pape and Nicolle Rubino all earned Rookie of the Year honors under Swanson s guidance. Swanson has elevated the program to its current high state through a combination of shrewd recruiting, coaching acumen, fine assistant coaches and players who understand the team concept. The evidence is there for all to see. In the past 15 seasons, the Pioneers have assembled a (.658) record, but they have been even more formidable against conference opponents during that span, with a (.761) mark. After directing the Pioneers to a 20-7 record the program s first 20-win season in , Swanson was voted Coach of the Year in the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) and the Women s Basketball Coaches Association s (WBCA) District I. He was runner-up for NEC Coach of the Year in , when Sacred Heart s inaugural Division I team produced a record and tied for third (11-7) during the conference s regular season. Basketball has always been an integral part of Swanson s life. From his days as a two-time captain at Kolbe Cathedral High School in Bridgeport, to the transition of elevating the Pioneers to the Division I level, to directing his two-week long NIKE Girls Basketball Camp at Sacred Heart each summer, Swanson has demonstrated a passion for the game exceeded by few. He earned a bachelor s degree in business from Sacred Heart in He joined Dave Bike s men s coaching staff that year, and, after becoming head coach of the Pioneer women s program in 1990, did double duty for three seasons before becoming the University s first full-time women s coach in Immediately prior to Swanson s arrival, the Sacred Heart women s team had a 4-21 record. Under his guidance, the climb to Division II respectability was accomplished within three seasons, from 8-19 to and, in , to the program s first winning record in 11 seasons. A basketball aficionado the year round, Swanson spends a good portion of each summer coaching and lecturing at camps and attending AAU tournaments in several states, in addition to running his aforementioned NIKE Girls Basketball Camp. Swanson, his wife Marion and two sons Connor and Matthew reside in Shelton, CT. NEC Coaching Career Records Most Wins Among Active Coaches 1. Sal Buscaglia (RMU) , 33 years 2.
