Detrick Gymnasium (3,200) New Britain, CT Officials: Joanne Aldrich, Larry Savo, Dick Kulmann The Storyline The Sacred Heart women s basketball team will be looking to continue their hot streak and find a place in the record books as they travel to Central Connecticut in search of their seventh-straight victory Thursday night. With a win tonight, the Pioneers can set a new school record for longest winning streak as they embark on a three-game road trip to close out the regular season. After facing the Blue Devils tonight, SHU travels to Long Island on Saturday and St. Francis (NY) on Monday as the battle for positioning in the Northeast Conference Tournament rages on. The Pioneers are currently alone in fourth place and could move up in seeding if they continue to win and get some help. Sacred Heart and CCSU faced-off once already this season, with the Pioneers coming away with a 21-point victory on February 13th. Sacred Heart Probable Starters This Season... 2 Series Sacred Heart leads the all-time series, 9-8, dating back to the season. The Pioneers are 5-2 against the Blue Devils since joining the Northeast Conference during the season. The Pioneers handed the Blue Devils a loss back on February 13th in Farifield. Senior Ashley Durmer led the Pioneer attack, pouring in a career-high 21 points while breaking the school record for three-pointers in a career. Fellow senior Brooke Rutnik picked up a double-double in the win, scoring 13 and grabbing a career-high 15 boards. Junior Ashley Kohl had 11 as SHU shot a season best 52.9% (9-17) from threepoint range. Sacred Heart took both meetings last season, holding CCSU to under 50 points in both contests. SHU posted a win over Central at the Pitt Center on January 14th with forwards Brooke Kelly and Brooke Rutnik leading the way. Kelly scored a game-high 15 points, sinking 11-of-13 from the line while Rutnik pulled down 12 rebounds and blocked two shots in the win. In the return meeting, Kelly once again came up big for the Pioneers, netting a career-high 25 points and grabbing 12 rebounds to lead Sacred Heart to a win in New Britain. Central s Kim Kopecko recorded a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. The two schools met for the first time during the season, with the Blue Devils coming away winners. Scouting the Blue Devils... Central Connecticut enters tonight s contest with a 7-18 overall record and 6-9 in the Northeast Conference. The Blue Devils have lost six of their last seven ball games and are coming off a loss to Long Island on Tuesday. CCSU is led by their fantastic freshman Kim Boone, who has been named NEC Rookieof-the-Week on three seperate occasions this year. Boone is averaging 8.7 points per game to lead the team. She is also averaging 2.5 rebounds and has picked up a teamhigh 31 steals on the year. Junior Kristen Gonsalves is the only player to start all 25 games for the Blue Devils and is second on the club averaging 8.2 points per game. Gonsalves is averaging 4.5 rebounds and is shooting 73.2% (52-71) from the free throw line. Sophomore Elina Kalnina leads the team in rebounding, pulling down 5.5 boards while scoring 7.2 points a game. Junior Kerrin Fesik is the team s leading three point threat, knocking down a team-high 32 treys and shooting 37.6% (32-85) from long range. The Blue Devils were picked to finish 12th in the NEC Preseason Coaches Poll and are currently in ninth place in the conference standings. CCSU is ineligible for the NEC Tournament this season. SHU in the Northeast Conference... Sacred Heart became a member of the Northeast Conference during the season and since that time posted a overall and conference record. The Pioneers have qualified for the NEC Tournament each of their three seasons in the league and have never finished lower than third in the conference standings. The Coaches Ed Swanson (SHU 89) is in his 13 th season as head coach at his alma matar. Swanson posts a record in his career at Sacred Heart. His teams have a record since joining the Division I ranks in Swanson is the program s longest tenured coach and is the all-time leader in coaching wins, (189) and winning percentage (.532). Yvette Harris (Detroit-Mercy 82) is in her first season at the helm of the Central Connecticut State University basketball program. She currently holds a 7-18 overall record in her first year as the head coach of the Blue Devils. Harris comes to CCSU after spending the past five seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Michigan. During her tenure, Harris served as the recruiting coordinator as Michigan earned its first-ever top-25 national ranking, while also making two trips to the NCAA Tournament. She will have surgery this Thursday. Win Streak hits Six... Sacred Heart appears to be hitting it s stride heading into the NEC Tournament. For the first time since the season, the Pioneers have won six-straight and have tied the longest win-streak in school history. The last time a SHU team won six-straight was during the season, when the Pioneers finished a program best A win tonight will give the Pioneers a seven game winning streak, the longest in the program s 29 year history. Third-Straight Winning Season... At 16-8, the Pioneers are assured of their third-straight winning season and eighthstraight season with at least a.500 record. In their four seasons in Division I, Sacred Heart holds a overall record. The last time Sacred Heart ended a season with a losing record was in , when they finished With two more wins, the Pioneers will equal their best win total in Division I with 18 ( ). The team posted a program-best 20 wins. Kelly and Kohl Verizon Academic All-Americans... Senior Brooke Kelly and junior Ashley Kohl were named to the 2003 Verizon Academic All-America Team announced on Thursday. Both were selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) to the District I University Division second team. Kelly, a senior co-captain, sports a 3.55 grade point average with a major in Biological Sciences, while Kohl, a junior guard, holds a 3.98 grade point average, the highest on the team, with a major in Psychology. All candidates for the award must be a starter or important

3 reserve with legitimate athletic credentials and at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale). He/ she must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing and must have completed at least one full academic year at the same institution. Nominated athletes must have participated in 50% of the team s games at the position in which they are nominated for. Rutnik Cleaning the Glass...Over her last four games, senior forward Brooke Rutnik has been a monster on the boards, averaging a double-double per contest. Rutnik is pulling down 10.5 boards and scoring 10.8 points per game. She is avearaging 9.4 points and 7.4 rebounds on the season. Pioneers Just Offensive... Sacred Heart has been on an offensive tear of late, posting four-straight solid efforts at the offensive end of the court. The Pioneers are coming off a win over UMBC on Monday and notched backto-back 20 point plus wins in the last week. SHU pounded Central Connecticut to the tune of and came back to rip NEC co-leaders, Quinnipiac, The Pioneers shot 50% for just the third time this season against the Retirievers, hitting 24-of-46 (.522) from the floor. Against CCSU, Sacred Heart shot a season-best 52.9% (9-17) from three-point range. The Pioneers are averaging 72.2 points per game while shooting 49.3% and 48.8% from three over the stretch. Sacred Heart Bomb Squad...The Pioneers have been down right lethal of late from long range, burying 48.8% (40-82) of their three s in the last four games. SHU tied a school record with 13 makes from behind the arc in their last meeting with the Blue Devils, equalling the mark set by the club against Keene State. Leading the long range assault has been senior Ashley Durmer and junior Ashley Kohl. Durmer became the school s all-time threepoint leader against CCSU and hasn t slowed down one bit. She is 16-of-25 from three over her last four games and is averaging 14.0 points a contest. Kohl has hit 14-of-27 over the stretch, scoring 13.8 points a game. Kohl on Point... Since losing sophomore point guard Allie Bagnell to a season ending knee injury 11 games ago, junior Ashley Kohl has shown she is more than up to the task of becoming the Pioneer s floor general. Since tying the school record for three-pointers in a game with eight against Robert Morris nine games ago, Kohl has been on fire from three-point range. The junior guard is shooting 50.0% (30-60) from long range over the stretch, averaging 12.0 points and 3.3 assists per-game. Kohl is averaging 9.5 points and 3.0 assists, while shooting 45.1% (37-82) from three-point range in Northeast Conference play this season. Rubino 4-Time Rookie-of-the-Week...Freshman Nicolle Rubino was named NEC Rookie-of-the-Week last week for the fourth time this season. On the year, Rubino ranks among the NEC leaders in scoring (12.0 ppg), steals (2.00 spg) and free throw percentage (.739/51-69). Home Sweet Home...The Pioneers closed out the home portion of their schedule Monday night, beating UMBC SHU is 10-2 at home this season and will host the first two rounds of next week s NEC Tournament in the friendly confines of the Pitt Center. How friendly you ask? The Pioneers are at home since joining the NEC and since the building opened in Ashley Durmer SHU s All-Time Top 3-pt Threat... Senior guard Ashley Durmer had a career-night in the win over Central Connecticut and in the process became the Pioneer s all-time leading three-point shooter. Durmer, needed just one make from behind the arc to move past Chrissie Perkins ( ) into first place on the list. She wasted little time, knocking down her first of five long range bombs on the night just two minutes into the game to lay claim to the crown. The Nashua, NH native finished five-ofsix from three-point land for 21 points, both career-high marks. Climbing the NEC Ladder...Heading into February 8th s game at Fairleigh Dickinson, the Pioneers sat in eighth-place in the NEC standings and in much need of a win. Since then, SHU has ripped off six-straight and has clinched a spot in the NEC Tournament for the fourth consecutive season. They head into tonight s match-up with a 10-5 conference mark and sitting in soul possession of fourthplace. And Down the Stretch They Come...The Pioneers are heading down the final stretch of the season with their eye s focused on their first-ever NEC Championship. Sacred Heart will close out the regular season with three-straight on the road, starting tonight. The good news is their opponents the rest of the way sport a combined overall record as the battle for playoff positioning ensues. Sacred Heart is a combined all-time against Central Connecticut, Long Island and St. Francis (NY). The Stars Come Out at Night... Sacred Heart is 10-3 in games played in the evening and just 6-5 in afternoon contests. The Pioneers are averaging 68.5 points and shooting 43.6% from the field in games with a start time of 5:30 p.m. or later. Double-Double Club... Senior Brooke Rutnik picked up her fourth double-double of the season scoring 12 points and grabbing 13 rebounds against Mount St. Mary s. Rutnik also accomplished the feat against CCSU, Brown and Yale earlier this season. In her career, she has eight doubledouble games. Senior Brooke Kelly picked up her fourth

4 double-double on the season with a 19 point 11 rebound performance Quinnipiac last week. Kelly now has 12 double digit point and rebound performances in her career. It s A Block Party!...Brooke Rutnik and the rest of the Pioneers currently lead the Northeast Conference in blocked shots. The senior forward has 32 blocks on the year and is averaging 1.39 swats a game. As a team, SHU is averaging 4.2 blocks per contest. Sophomore Colleen Duggan is second in the league with 24 blocks for a 1.33 per game average. She turned in one of the top-performances in the country against Lafayette, when she turned away seven Leopard shots to tie the school record held by Rutnik. Gotta Make Your Free Throws... The Pioneers are leading the conference in free throw percentage, shooting 70.4% ( ) from the charity stripe this season. Three Pioneers rank in the top-15 in the conference from the line. Senior Brooke Rutnik ranks sixth at.774 (48-62), freshman Nicolle Rubino ranks 10th at.739 (51-69) and Brooke Kelly ranks 14th at.672 (90-134). Rutnik, Kelly and Durmer reach 100 Career Games... Seniors Brooke Rutnik, Brooke Kelly and Ashley Durmer, have all mader their 100th appearance in a Pioneer uniform this season. Rutnik made her 100th appearence in the previous meeting with Central Connecticut and in the process recorded a double-double with 13 points and a career-high 15 rebounds in the win. Kelly accomplished the feat at St. Francis (PA), while Durmer made her 100th appearance in a SHU uniform when the Pioneers hosted Robert Morris. The Sacred Heart Pioneers are currently ranked 161st in the latest CollegeRPI.com ratings. They are ranked 281st in strength of schedule. The RPI (Rating Percentage Index) is a measure of strength of schedule and how a team does against that schedule. It does not consider things like margin of victory or where a game is played, only whether or not a team won. It is used by the NCAA as one of their factors in deciding which teams to invite to the NCAA Tournament and where to seed them. CollegeRPI.com is an independent duplication of the NCAA Division I Women s Basketball Committee rankings. Pioneers Ink Four for Next Season... Sacred Heart University women s basketball head coach Ed Swanson announced today that four student-athletes have signed National Letters-of-Intent during the early signing period. Guards Amanda Pape (Stamford, CT/Trinity Catholic), Mary Rush (Waterbury, CT/Holy Cross) and Kerri Burke (Saugus, MA/Bishop Fenwick) along with forward Aleisha Mott (Ansonia, CT/Ansonia) have all signed letters and will join the Pioneers next season. Pape, a 5-8 shooting guard out of Trinity Catholic, is one of the top-players in Connecticut. She has been a first team all state and All-FCIAC choice three straight seasons and has scored 1,754 points in her career. Pape averaged 24.4 points last season in leading Trinity Catholic to the FCIAC and Class S state titles. Rush, a 5-10 shooting guard from Holy Cross High School in Waterbury, CT, led her team to the Class L state final game last year against Guilford. She averaged 26 points a game in the state tournament and currently has 986 points in her career. Burke,

5 a 5-7 point guard from Bishop Fenwick High School, will bring depth to the Pioneer backcourt next year. She averaged 15 points, eight assists, five rebounds and six steals last season and has been a member of the varsity team at Bishop Fenwick since her freshman year. Mott, a 6-2 forward out of Ansonia High School, will step in and give the Pioneers much needed height next season with the loss of current senior forwards Brooke Kelly and Brooke Rutnik. Mott has been a standout on the basketball and volleyball teams at Ansonia the past three seasons. In addition to her exceptional play on the court, Mott is a standout in the classroom. She is currently number one in her class and will be her class s valedictorian. Northeast Conference Preseason Rankings The Sacred Heart women s basketball team was picked to finish second in the Northeast Conference women s basketball preseason coaches poll for the season, as selected by a vote of the leagues head coaches. Central Connecticut State Kelly Honored Senior Brooke Kelly, and All-NEC second team selection in , was chosen to top that performance this season, being selected to the NEC Preseason All-conference team by the league s head coaches. SHU Site of the Northeast Conference Tournament Sacred Heart University will play host to the first two rounds of the Northeast Conference Women s Basketball Tournament, March 8-9th. The championship game will be played at the remaining highest seed. If the Pioneers qualify for this year s tournament, they will be a tough draw at the Pitt Center, posting a (.780) overall and 30-6 (.833) NEC record at home since joining the conference in The Pioneers are 10-2 at home this season. SHU Ranked 21 st in WBCA Academic Top-25 The Women s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) announced its 2002 Academic Top 25 Honor Roll for NCAA Division I, recognizing the nation s highest team grade point averages (GPA) for the season based upon nominations submitted by WBCA-member coaches. The Sacred Heart women s basketball team made the top- 25 for the second straight season with a team grade point average of The Pioneers rank 21 st and are the highest ranked school among Division I teams from Connecticut. Yale, the only other Connecticut team in the top-25, was 24 th with a GPA. Last year s grade point average was an improvement over the team whose GPA ranked 15 th nationally. History This is the 29 th season of Pioneer basketball. Sacred Heart s first year of competition was the season under head coach Mickey Stratton. SHU carries an overall record of 294 wins and 410 losses for a.418 winning percentage. SHU joined the Division I ranks in the season as a member of the Northeast Conference, making this the fourth season at the Division I level. SHU has not had a losing season in Division I, posting a record and three consecutive trips to the NEC Tournament. SHU Record Watch... Seniors Brooke Kelly, Ashley Durmer and Brooke Rutnik have been steadily moving up the charts in the all-time lists for four major records. Kelly needs 10 points to move past Chrissie Perkins ( ) into thirdplace on the career scoring list. She currently ranks second in all-time free throws made (380) and sixth in career rebounds with 662. Durmer now holds the all-time record for career three-pointers with 162. Career Scoring List 1.
