2 Season Review * Page 2 team Notes BAYLOR (32-26, Big 12) Last Result: Lost to Kansas State, 3-2 Last 5/Last 10 Games: 2-3/5-5 Baylor missed NCAA Championship play for only the second time since The Bears are one of only 15 Division I programs with at least nine NCAA appearances in the last 10 years. Sophomores Dustin Dickerson and Shaver Hansen ended the season on five and three-game hitting streaks, respectively. BU surpassed the 90,000 mark in total home attendance for the fifth consecutive season, drawing 95,027 fans. This season s average attendance of 3,065 ranks second in school history. It marks the ninth consecutive season Baylor has drawn at least 2,700 per game. BU is one of seven Division I schools to average at least 2,700 fans every season since kansas state (29-29, Big 12) Recent Result: Lost to No. 24 Texas, 15-7 Last 5/Last 10 Games: 3-2/6-4 Kansas (30-27, 9-18 Big 12) Recent Result: Lost to Kansas State, Last 5/Last 10 Games: 1-4/5-5 Kansas won at least 30 games for the fifth time under sixth-year head coach Ritch Price. His squads have finished.500 or better in all but one season. Senior John Allman led the Jayhawks in batting average for the second straight season with a career-high.365 percentage. He ended his career with a.344 average, never hitting below.333 in any season. Junior Paul Smyth recorded 10 saves during the 2008 campaign, becoming just the third Jayhawk pitcher to reach double-digits in saves. Smyth s 18 career saves rank second only to Don Czyz (29). Senior Ryne Price recorded 11 home runs to finish with a school-record 35 round-trippers in his career. Price also finished his final campaign with a career-high 60 RBI. missouri (39-21, Big 12) Recent Result: Lost to Mississippi, 9-6 Last 5/Last 10 Games: 1-4/6-4 Kansas State qualified for its second straight Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship, the first time the Wildcats have done so in consecutive years. The Wildcats advanced to the title game of the Big 12 Championship for the first time in school history. K-State recorded 11 conference wins to tie for sixth in the league standings, the most wins and highest conference finish since the 2002 squad tallied 13 wins to tie for fifth. KSU recorded 105 stolen bases, the third-most in school history. The Wildcats collected 36 home runs in 2008, 12 more than they hit in nebraska ( , Big 12) Recent Result: Lost to Oral Roberts, 8-0 Last 5/Last 10 Games: 2-3/3-7 Nebraska reached 40 wins for the 17th time in school history, and eighth time in the past decade. In the Big 12 era, NU s eight 40-win seasons are the most by any program, as Texas and Oklahoma State have done it seven times each. The Huskers compiled 29 victories at Hawks Field, tying for the secondmost home wins in school history. Jake Opitz finished his career on a 14-game hitting streak, hitting.421 with five homers and 11 RBI during that span. NU s 491 strikeouts this season were the third-highest total in school history and the most by a Husker pitching staff since Aaron Crow became the highest draft pick ever from Missouri, as the Washington Nationals selected him with the ninth overall pick in the MLB Draft. Mizzou advanced to the NCAA Regionals for the sixth consecutive season and is one of just 16 teams nationally to qualify for postseason play in each of the last six years. Jacob Priday ended his career at Mizzou as the school record holder in home runs (49), RBI (489), at-bats (890), doubles (56) and extra-base hits (113). The Tigers recorded the highest national ranking of the season for the Big 12 at No. 2 on 24, which also accounted for Missouri s best rating in school history. oklahoma ( , Big 12) Recent Result: Lost to No. 4 Arizona State, 12-0 Last 5/Last 10 Games: 2-3/5-5 In 31 NCAA Tournament apperances, OU has tallied a record. The Sooners recorded a 2-2 mark in 2008, upsetting No. 22 Vanderbilt twice. Each of the Sooners final five wins came over top 25 opponents (Oklahoma State, Texas A&M, Missouri, Vanderbilt-twice). The Sooners were 15-1 in midweek games this season and finished in contests played at L. Dale Mitchell Park in OU has won 20 or more home games in each of the last four seasons. OU finished the season hitting.312 as a team, marking the third straight season the Sooners have finished with an above-.300 average. In addition, OU hit above.300 in conference play for the second time in the last three years and led schools with a.316 clip in Big 12 action.

Last 5/Last 10 Games: 3-2/6-4 OSU s 44 wins in 2008 are its most in five seasons under head coach Frank Anderson. The win total is also the Cowboys highest since The Cowboys lineup includes four of the Big 12 s top 12 hitters, while leading the league in batting average (.326), hits (713), home runs (89), RBI (469), slugging percentage (.531) and runs (501). OSU s 3.98 ERA marked the first time since 2005 that the Cowboys pitching staff finished the year with an ERA under The 05 and 08 seasons are the only two since 1974 that OSU has had an ERA of less than The Cowboys recorded the most victories over ranked opponents by a Big 12 team in 08 (15), including an 8-4 mark against teams team in the top 10. texas a&m (46-19, 19-8 Big 12) Recent Result: Lost to No. 5 Rice, 6-5 Last 5/Last 10 Games: 2-3/4-6 Texas A&M finished with 46 victories for only the seventh time in the 106- year history of the program. The Aggies put together consecutive years of at least 46 victories for the first time since 1998 and Junior right-hand pitcher Kyle Thebeau set a school record with his 33rd appearance of the season in the season finale at No. 5 Rice. His 79 career outings rank fourth all-time, eight shy of the school record. TAMU won its third regular season championship and fourth Big 12 title overall. The Aggies captured the league crown in 1998 and 1999, along with the postseason championship in Texas A&M set a school and league record with 16 consecutive conference victories. The Aggies did not lose a conference game from 28 until 11. texas (39-22, Big 12) Recent Result: Lost to No. 5 Rice, 7-4 Last 5/Last 10 Games: 3-2/7-3 UT earned its 3,000th victory in a 4-3 win over St. John s on June 1. The Longhorns joined Fordham University as the only two programs to reach the plateau. For the third time in Big 12 history, a UT squad claimed the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship crown, earning the conference s automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament. Texas made its 52nd NCAA Tournament appearance. The Horns have been a member of all but 10 of the NCAA Tournament fields. The Longhorns posted a winning season for the 50th time in the last 51 years. texas tech (25-30, 9-18 Big 12) Recent Result: Defeated Baylor, 12-5 Last 5/Last 10 Games: 3-2/4-6 After 22 seasons at the helm of the Red Raider program, Larry Hays stepped down on June 2. He is the fourth-winningest coach in NCAA history with 1,509 victories. Head coach designate Dan Spencer will succeed Hays. Roger Kieschnick, a junior right fielder, earned All-Big 12 honors for the third-straight season in 08. Junior Willie Rueda hit safely in 22 of Tech s last 25 games and posted 14 multiple-hit games during that stretch. He also led the team with a.361 overall batting average and a.365 mark in Big 12 play. Texas Tech had three wins over teams ranked in the top 10 nationally this season -- Missouri ( 29, 30) and Oklahoma State ( 11). Big 12 Notes For the second straight year, the Big 12 earned six bids to the NCAA Division I Baseball Championship, tied with the ACC for the second-most selections by a conference in the 2008 field. Texas A&M advanced to Super Regional action for the fifth time in school history. It also marked the first time that the Aggies won consecutive NCAA Regional titles, also claiming victories in 1993, 1999, 2004 and At least one Big 12 squad has participated in a Super Regional in each of the last 10 years. Five different teams have earned College World Series berths, including Texas 2002 and 05 national title runs, in the conference s 12-year tenure. Seven Big 12 schools were featured in national polls this season (Baylor, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas and Texas A&M). The Big 12 was one of two leagues to have three teams (Nebraska, Texas A&M and Oklahoma State) ranked in the top 15 of the RPI rankings released on 25. Overall, eight Big 12 squads were rated in the top Nebraska (8), Texas A&M (13), Oklahoma State (14), Texas (18), Missouri (39), Oklahoma (41), Baylor (46) and Kansas State (47). Eight of the 10 Big 12 squads recorded a.500 winning percentage or higher during the 2008 season. The league compiled a (.714) non-conference record, including 15 victories over ranked opponents (No. 1 UCLA, No. 3 Arizona State, No. 5 Wichita State - four, No. 6 Arizona - two, No. 11 UC Irvine, No. 15 Rice, No. 19 Houston, No. 18 TCU, No. 22 San Diego State, No. 22 Vanderbilt - two). The Big 12 was in head-to-head competition against teams from the ACC, Big West, Pac-10 and SEC in 08.
